"I'm going to pause it just for a bit, now that I know what's happening". Probably one of the best reaction lines ever, just before Tatiana sends their brain spinning!! Great reaction!
Is it really her voice, though, in the growls? It does not come from the vocal cords. It is a vibration of the throat sides away from the vocal cords. Is it enough that the growls are being shaped by the mouth into words? I have heard people who can make understandable words using the sounds of an extended burp - I think I can also question whether that should be called 'vocal.' Or does voice include all oral sounds, and 'vocal cords' is just a common but not exclusive part of that?
They did some overdubs for this video though, you can hear there are several vocal tracks on the chorus. I'd like to hear the "raw" version of this session.
They are from Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, where the fighting started in 2014. Tatiana is mostly self taught. Some of her influences are Gwen Stefani for the clean vocals, and for the harsh, Otep and Randy Blythe (Lamb of God). This is an older song, redone in this live session to showcase Vlad on drums, who had joined not long before this. But it went viral because of her vocals. He is classically trained on piano and self taught on drums. He ,Roman (guitar), and Eugene (bass) are all awesome musicians. The guys write the music, and Tatiana writes most of the lyrics. The song is referencing the astrological sign ,Pisces. Tati is a Pisces, she wrote the lyrics with a little help from Eugene(also a Pisces). When the current fighting started, the guys were stuck in Kiev, but were allowed to leave last summer to tour and be ambassadors for Ukraine. The usual next step for this band is to see her do it live with either Perennial live at Wacken 2019. Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev is good too.
I believe on The Charismatic Voice Channel, opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff persuaded Will Ramos from Lorna Shore to have a camera inserted into his throat while he performed growls to show what is actually going on in his throat. You might find that of interest to watch in your spare time! Great reaction by the way! Stay safe 🤘 ✌️
🤣🤣🤣 Well, it is her voice! And no, never ever was there anyone not getting fooled by that perfect trap in composition, singing and musicianship! You might love to watch her vocal one-take of "Judgement and Punishment". "Wallflower" may be nice for you to listen to and "I speak astronomy", Tatiana`s only love song (kind of...) 🙂🤘
The best overview of what she's doing IMO is The Fairy Voice Mother's reaction to Pisces after she spits up her tea in surprise. A very actionable toutorial on the technique is when ahe reacts to Electric Callboy's song Hypa Hypa with a friend and gives her friend a quick tutorial. Perennial live at Wacken is usually the next step to see Jinjer do their thing on stage, and with faster switching too. On The Top live in Kiev (now Kyiv) has a lot of great belting too. The one-take vocal video for Judgement & Punishment is great too. The most vocal tricks in a single performance is Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne but that's one of their harder songs. Subbed. Cheers!
OMG, The Fairy Voice Mother's reaction is one of the best reactions I have seen for this video. I saw it coming the second she took a sip right at the first transition.
Lol, when she lifted up her cup to have a taste, I was like, "Do you have to do that NOWWWWWWW???" But inside I was like, "Ooooooh, yessss. Go for it, girl! This is gonna be awesome unforgettable content!" And she did NOT disappoint! 😂😂😂😂
Love you face reactions !!! Welcome to Jinjer !!! Each band member is AMAZING !!!! and YES that is her voice aka Queen/Beast mode Tatiana !!! Vlad on Drums, Roman on Guitar and Eugene on Bass.... I listen to them everyday !!!! My favorite group !!!!
I agree. She has said that she will never attempt that in concert, because it was so difficult she's afraid she would mess it up. But, I have seen them since, and she has gotten even better. Perhaps something like that would be easier for her now.
@TheMC's - You know that all of us Jinjer fans were smiling on the outside, laughing on the inside at the way you were lulled into Tatiana serenity mode...you first timers never cease to amuse!! I too work with Opera singers, so when I show them this video...I get the same reaction!! 🤘❤🤟❤🤙
I loved your reaction, there are a lot of classically trained singers on TH-cam who have reacted in a similar way. I am 63 and this band just speaks to me. You never know what you are going to get in a Jinjer song a lot of time it is a thrill ride. A lot of Jinjer songs use jazz as a foundation.
Cheers from another rocker born a while back, 1962 in my case. Jinjer has been my gateway drug to harsh vocals, but nobody does it like Tatiana. I hope you have a chance to see ‘em live, they rule. I saw Rush 36x in concert, and Jinjer is at that level Live.
Tjere's a bit of post prod on the video but the growls are 100% Tatiana and she does switch that fast (if you wish to check out more, a popular one is Perennial live at Wacken). Judgement and Punishment one take is a great one to watch her larynx and placement. The whole band is super talented and creative, great musicianship all around
Agree on Perennial especially for vocal coaches and singers. Proves she can do it live, shows her ability to switch even mid line, and shows a lot of her range and breath control
Probably the best honest and sincere reaction to this I've seen. You didn't overreact when she started screaming, but you can see your obvious surprise.
Yay! Another Jinjer Pisces reaction that I hadn't seen :) Me and a few others make a hobby of watching reactions to this song :) A few tidbits I've learned about Tatiana and the band: "Heavy Vocals" a.k.a. the growl utilises a different part of the throat - the part that we use to make a heave sound. It took Tatiana 12 years to train her growl this way. But this is how she can switch cleanly between the two styles. Another bit of info: This video was made to highlight their new drummer, who has had no formal training in drums - he is a classically trained pianist who taught himself so he could play in Jinjer. A great one to prove she's actually making that noise is Perennial Live at Wacken. Welcome to Jinjer!
Tatiana's voice is always beautiful! It is amazing how she drifts in and out of the different singing modes... Especially the ending is super impressive. I've seen probably around 50 reactions to this song and it never gets old... This song is like hand crafted for reaction channels.
Hey Jules, I love your reaction and you are certainly not the first person to be shocked by the transition into the chorus. I've been a musician since I was a young child and I've played in multiple bands in several genres over the decades, but I also was not into metal music with scream/growl harsh vocals until I discovered Jinjer near the end of 2021. I immediately loved them because of their sophisticated songwriting, fantastic musicianship and the vocals of Tatiana, with her incredible ability to instantly transition back and forth from her beautiful clean singing voice to some of the best harsh vocals I've heard, female or male. She taught herself how to do the harsh vocals, but according to several reputable TH-cam vocal coaches, she uses proper technique with use of her false vocal cords, preventing damage to her true vocal cords (Elizabeth Zharoff from The Charismatic Voice channel did a great long interview with Tatiana about a year and a half ago that's available on her channel). I'd also recommend checking out the "live from Wacken 2019" video for their song Perennial (which really shows Tatiana's ability in a concert setting), the official video for Wallflower (the first half of the song has a very cool "jazz-like" groove which gradually builds up to a big finish and the video is awesome) and Tatiana's "live one-take vocal performance" video of their song Judgement and Punishment (the music has a mix of reggae and metal sections and Tatiana's vocals are fantastic).
I'm 61 years old, and this is NOT "my kind of music," but I put this one on my playlist. If you want to know how she does it, The Charismatic Voice channel has a couple of videos where she learns how to growl.
Also, the Fairy Voice Mother reacts to this and explains what Tatiana is doing with her vocal track to accomplish this. Tatiana is self taught. Her Tea Time Interview with The Charismatic Voice is a good one to watch. Jinjer is from eastern Ukraine but had to relocate to western Ukraine after the violence broke out in 2013. What Putin's invasion in 2022 is doing to their country is deepening the wound. They speak to this in their song Home Back.
All music is my kind of music - except off course for absolute rubbish (like most of today's stuff). I always attempt to fathom the motivation behind the music and especially the words. That is who Leonard Cohen is the absolute pinnacle of music expression to me. BUT this is high on my list as well.
Every Jinger song is different. Tatiana is captivating and her vocal translations are seamless. Its mindboggling. She worked extremely hard to find a healthy way to achieve the harsh vocals /grawls. Part of that involves the false vocal cords. Jinger is awesome. They use that mix of beautiful clean vocals and harsh vocals/grawls to tell a story. The harsh vocals have a purpose such as emotional context beyond shock value. I really recommend Teacher Teacher official video, Perennial live at Wacken and Judgement and Punishment Tatiana's one take vocal performance version. I suggest pulling up lyrics to read through just before each Jinger song. Thier music is even better once you understand the meaning behind the lyrics.
Great reaction. Tati has an amazing voice. The entire band is Top Notch. My favorite band for over 2 years now, of all time. I will be seeing them Aug. 12, locally, in Syracuse, NY...
I love it. There is the shock of the growl part, and then there is the shock of realizing it is Tati doing all of it :). Welcome to the Jinjer Army. Highly suggest Perennial (Live at Wacken), Pit of Consciousness (Live at Kiev), and Judgement and Punishment (One Take) as next reactions if going down the Jinjer rabbit hole.
You found the Jinjer rabbit hole. Strap in and have tea with the mad hatter because this hole goes deep. Seen them live twice. They CRUSH! Great sound, better than studio, and they are totally perfectionist professionals.
All right, the fish got hooked! "Pieces" is just a bait, after which it is impossible not to fall in love with this band and forget it. There will be more to come!))))
Hey Jules, love your channel and the reaction to Tati, she is a Vocal Beast, that's for sure. This was my first foray into the world of "growling" and while I don't understand it completely I have become aware that there are good and bad methods. Tatiana (here) and Floor (Nightwish, "Yours Is An Empty Hope" and before she joined them) both do the growls with precision and great skill. Julia Nilon, who is a vocal teacher in Australia and has a channel on YT as well, did an entire show just on growling, and I believe she brought in Chase Carneson for additional support in the conversation. From what I understood, she is forcing a large quantity of air around her vocal folds, rather than the cords. There is little if any cord vibration happening during that process, which keeps her cords healthy.
You’ve found the best band of all time. Literally the best drummer of all time. The bass player is in my top 3. Top 3 guitar player as well. Cap it all off with a singer who’s range and lyrics are unmatched. Tati Roman Eugene and Vlad are a humble supergroup. In my opinion some of the songs they’ve written if they got played on mainstream radio we’d have a revolution in music like Nirvana did in the 90s.
The type of vocals she was doing is typically called harsh vocals, gutturals or growling... I normally listen to harder and more extreme subgenres such as death metal, which is 100% growling vocals but I found Jinjer to be awesome! Especially how effortless she makes the switching back and forth between the clean and harsh/growls.
A beautiful and genuine reaction! Watching these Pisces reactions is my musical comfort food. Yours is excellent. Man, all i have to do is hear Roman’s gorgeous guitar arpeggio in 7/8 and the emotions start, even the thousandth time I’ve heard it. It’s a master composition by master composers. It is indeed the perfect musical trap, more surprising than Josef Haydn’s “Surprise” symphony. Complete with cinematic jump-scares! It’s got so many layers, and the more you learn the more you love. Jinjer themselves don’t consider Pisces one of their best songs. I almost sense a reluctance about acknowledging its greatness. But for me it’s perfect. The ideal introduction to an amazing band, my gateway drug to harsh vocals. Check out the Voice Hacks YT channel for another good description of harsh vocals, from a female harsh vocalist who’s also a vocal coach. She does lesson videos on how to scream like Tatiana. Slava Jinjer!!
have you ever been to the faeroe islands? i guess not but let me take you to this place because you need to meet eivor. falling free live at the old theater in tórshavn is the best live performance i know. her voice is absolute phenomenal
Great video, with the perfect pause. I appreciate your interest even if it not for you. Tatiana uses a mix of false chord growls and fry scream. Jinjer also considers themselves to be progressive metalcore/ groove metal. They are so talented and honestly are some of the best in the business today. Be sure to check out "Perennial" live at Wacken, "Judgement and Punishment" one take, and "Teacher, Teacher". They blend grooves and genres effortlessly. Hope to see more soon
Great video reaction! You have to do Perrenial Live at Wacken with her wearing the yellow jumpsuit! Also Tea her Teacher and Who’s Gonna be the one Live! Welcome to the world of Jinjer.
Tatiana is using her upper throat for the "Growls". She is self taught in the technique. If she was using her vocal cords she would blow her voice out. So using her upper throat allows her instantly switch between.
After hearing Jinger you are ready for what I would recommend to try next: Infected Rain with songs like "At the Bottom of the Bottle" or "Mold". I'm really curious what you think about this Moldavian band.
Hi there Jules!!! This is my first time visiting your channel. I have a heads up for you. Once the drummer switches to rim-shots -- business is about to pick up!! You'll see & hear!! Tatiana is one heck of a vocalist!! In my head and opinion this group is the best thing to ever come out of the former U.S.S.R. They are from Ukraine. There is a TH-cam video of her putting her stage makeup on. I watched it so I could hear her speak. She taught herself how to do this!! Some call her the Queen of Scream!! Thanks
Theres alot of reaction to this tune I think it's because it's so well put together, and her voice is beautiful, if you read the lyrics you'll appreciate it even more great stuff
The live one take of Judgement and Punishment would probably be of interest to you. It's just her at the mic so you get a good look at her singing technique.
I’ve done that kind of voice for decades(growling). The best way I can describe how to do it is start small. Make what I call grunting noises that you often times hear in this type of music. Make sounds like Rah or Roh(O sounds are the easiest), almost kind of like a dog bark. Try to get as low of a tone that you can achieve using your false vocal chords. Once you’ve become more comfortable and accustomed with doing that and have already achieved the desired sound, then you can mess around with trying to articulate words. Be cautious when doing this though, if it tickles or hurts when attempting it you are more than likely doing it wrong and could potentially hurt your vocal chords. It came pretty naturally to me as I’m very passionate about this type of music.
1:40 "...Now that I know what's happening." Ha! That's what you thought. Best laugh I've had all day! SLAVA UKRAINI and their awesome musical export Jinjer! Nice reaction!
It's always fun to see first reactions to Tatiana's "demon voice". She is self taught and it apparently took a lot of practice to get that growl perfected without damaging her voice. I'm not generally a big fan of that style of singing, but I love Tatiana's ability to flip from clean to growling vocals on a metaphorical dime.
haha as others here have said, welcome to Jinjer and Tatiana. There's a whole video where she talks about how she developed "the voice" and I've talked to a couple vocal coaches here (I DJ some weekends so I meet a lot of music people) who said it doesn't sound like she's damaging her voice, and her transitions from normal to scream/growl is amazing. All their songs are worth listening to even if you're not a metal fan, this was a good intro but there are others where she really lets it go. Anyway happy listening, all the best!
Another one falls into the Jinjer reaction rabbit hole! 😂 The next Jinjer video people usually watch after Pisces live session is Perennial, live at Wacken (pronounced Va-kin). Really drives home how real her voice is and how easily she changes from growls to cleans.
Yes I can do that type of a growl, but it's a bit hard to explain how to do it. you kinda learn it a you go go but if I had to explain it you start the growling/rumbling at the bottom of your lungs and just let your body amplify on the way. Your throat doesn't have to do anything for it and of course you then use your moth to articulate whatever you want. (but have to note that Tatianas breath control for this is beyond amazing)
Jinjer - IMHO, all technically high-class players, with an outstanding vocalist. She's very expressive. Jinjer is progressive, melodic and extreme. I'd say prog melodeath but lots of people say they are metalcore. YMMV. If you want to see a bit more variation in Tatiana's vocals, try "Teacher, Teacher" (OMV), or for something gentler "Wallflower" OMV. The beast-mode growl is done with the false vocal folds above the vocal cords - it's how lions roar, for example. If done properly, the vocal cords are isolated and remain undamaged, from info picked up by watching vocal coaches reacting to Jinjer. [PS This is not "screamo" - very different genre. You can call it "screaming" though.]
im pretty sure that she changes her growl voice to soft singing voice the same way you change you opera voice to normal talking voice and for most people operatic voice is just as surprising technique-vise as Tatiana`s growl voice.
Hi, I am glad you want to know more about it. Also, for what it is worth Tatiana is growl singing not doing screamo. A very basic way to start is do warm ups first, very important. Then growl gently like a dog. Gradually do it stronger to be loude enough so that others will be able to hear you if you did it instead of talking. Then talk while doing it. Do not push yourself too much, or you can cause damage. Your vocal chords should never hurt or feel stressed. As when doing a performance at full volume with no mic's you should not push yourself into pain or uncomfortable sensations. Like when doing any new physical workout you will need to have a recovery time after before you do it again to avoid any unpleasantness.
"I'm going to pause it just for a bit, now that I know what's happening". Probably one of the best reaction lines ever, just before Tatiana sends their brain spinning!! Great reaction!

@@petrilampela this is true and i heard tati atleast regrets putting live session in the title for that reason. this is an edited video.
Tatiana starts growling alway has that "gotcha bitch!" moment :D
'Don't rely on me and I won't deceive' is such a great line. A perfect disclaimer.
Lmao ahhahaaha
The Fairy Voice Mother has a really good reaction to this one, and she explains how Tati is doing what she is doing with her voice.
A good follow-up song is "Perennial" live from Wacken 2019.

the transition from, "soft rock" and "this is relaxing" to "no this is metal" and "I'm scared" is amazing.

Strap in and have tea with the mad hatter because this hole goes deep.
Seen them live twice. They CRUSH! Great sound, better than studio, and they are totally perfectionist professionals.
Love your reactions!! Especially comment about period!, I laugh in understanding. Ty - J ❤
finally getting to see them live in a couple weeks, cant wait.
All right, the fish got hooked! "Pieces" is just a bait, after which it is impossible not to fall in love with this band and forget it. There will be more to come!))))
I am seeing them live in August...I can't wait, and i was never a big fan of growls and sreams before I found this band.
According to Tatiana, she developed the ability to sound like that by yelling at people in traffic! 😯 Thanks for the reaction!
So much talent on display unbelievable
Never. Gets. Old! Tatiana is on a whole other Level…
I love her so much. I was so sad that I missed her in Raleigh b/c of weather Monday night :( Hoping for a reschedule!
MORE JINJER!!!
FOR SURE!
Welcome to Jinjer, enjoy the ride
Please don't think I am being disrespectful, buy after watching DOZENS of Jinjer reactions, you nailed every pause and comment perfectly 😅❤
please as a singer... i hope you look into her as a whole. you probably already have , glad to see your reaction.
Seeing people react in jinjer - pisces is my hobby now
Harsh vocals do not hurt when done properly 🙂 actually feels amazing to do
Perennial waken 2019 is a good follow-up
have you ever been to the faeroe islands? i guess not but let me take you to this place because you need to meet eivor. falling free live at the old theater in tórshavn is the best live performance i know. her voice is absolute phenomenal
This never gets old...lol
After hearing Jinger you are ready for what I would recommend to try next: Infected Rain with songs like "At the Bottom of the Bottle" or "Mold". I'm really curious what you think about this Moldavian band.
that was so fun you watching your brain tryin to wonder were to GO haaaa haaaa welcome to the FAMILY
Thanks
"Now that I know what's happening"..famous last words
ha ha ha, and yes, yup, that's exactly right! Tatiana is well..... she's Tatiana!
Way to own it. I love it
I sent this to a friend of mine once.
He said he was thinking that "oh she has a lovely voice, very calming.... Oh my god, Satan lives inside her!!!"
Theres alot of reaction to this tune I think it's because it's so well put together, and her voice is beautiful, if you read the lyrics you'll appreciate it even more great stuff
Tatiana Booyakah❤ has been keeping her voice healthy for over 15 years singing with Jinjer
The live one take of Judgement and Punishment would probably be of interest to you. It's just her at the mic so you get a good look at her singing technique.
Great reaction. Grazie
Her: "I like this. It's very soft."
Tatiana: "Fool. This isn't even my final form."
She had no clue she was about to get punched in the face LOL 😂
This is the reaction I came here for!!! 🤣
awww thank you!
1:40 "...Now that I know what's happening." Ha! That's what you thought. Best laugh I've had all day! SLAVA UKRAINI and their awesome musical export Jinjer! Nice reaction!
"Now that I know what's happening...." 😂
It's always fun to see first reactions to Tatiana's "demon voice". She is self taught and it apparently took a lot of practice to get that growl perfected without damaging her voice. I'm not generally a big fan of that style of singing, but I love Tatiana's ability to flip from clean to growling vocals on a metaphorical dime.
“Aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh….” Greatest way to explain it. Enjoy!
Great musicians
haha as others here have said, welcome to Jinjer and Tatiana.
The next Jinjer video people usually watch after Pisces live session is Perennial, live at Wacken (pronounced Va-kin). Really drives home how real her voice is and how easily she changes from growls to cleans.
She got all of us the first time. 😂
Your reaction is as real as it gets...
I love them lyrics
SCALE ARMOUR B LAZE
Jinjer is their own genre. You’ll see. Buckle up.
im pretty sure that she changes her growl voice to soft singing voice the same way you change you opera voice to normal talking voice and for most people operatic voice is just as surprising technique-vise as Tatiana`s growl voice.
