Aren't they incredible? Not just Tatiana, the whole band is at the top of their game. Drummer went to a fancy music school and studied piano, he's fantastic.
Growling would be the right term, glad to hear an opera singer knows about the mechanics of what she's doing! I'm a metal vocalist myself, I was ready with a technical explanation if you needed it lol
I don't think anyone's said this already. But given that the song is named "Pisces", the zodiac sign which symbolizes the twin fishes, the duality of Tatiana using false-cord vocals and her true-cord vocals makes a lot of sense. This song represents that duality along with adding in the elements of the story of a "Child of Neptune" (in order words a Mermaid/Merman) who feels this acutely and without fail. Another example of this is Yin and Yang with the concept of a darker side and a good side of a person. With Tatiana gradually building up the verses sung in her false-cord vocals, it shows that ultimately the darker side of the character she's portraying reigns victorious over the good side in the end. Which, unfortunately, can contribute to the innate core of human nature. Thank you for giving Jinjer a listen Peter! Admittedly, I couldn't stop cackling at your reactions to Tatiana's drop into her false-cord vocals. I've watched many reactions to when she does this, and it still cracks me up! Hello from the U.S.A. 👋.
I finally saw them last night!!!! That was one of the best live performances I've seen. I've seen hundreds of concerts over the last 20-30 years. The way she moves and poses while switching up vocals isn't just music, it is an ART! I can't wait to see them again!
i enjoy watching people's reactions to this song almost as much as i enjoying watching/listening to it. the beginning lures you in then that first heavy line comes in and kicks you in the teeth. she's a siren then a demon and then switches back and forth.
Dude. 🥁 👀 So glad you as an opera singer voice aficionado picked up quick on Vlad’s killer technique, ghost notes and various syncopated subtleties. 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼
I really like the way your emotions and appreciation of the music is so visible in you expressions. Just adds so much to the experience. And your face at 12.54, priceless! Keep em coming!
Just seen Jinjer live last night. You think this video is mind blowing. You need to see them live! The whole band is Insanely talented, and Tatiana demands attention from the second she walks out to the end. Incredible show
There's double tracking on the most intense parts of her growl lines but that's it. She's got gorgeous clear diction in her harsh vocals, thats her standout feature to me.
@@ericpeterson7512 Right. And also some overdubs in the guitar. The lable "live session" is a little misleading. It's not a pure live performance, it's like a "enhanced" live performance, like if a band would record the complete basic track together, but that's not the finished product. I think they even have some backing stuff running from tape (or computer these days) during their concerts. Still it doesn't take anything away from the amazing talent all 4 of them have.
@@mrtveye6682yeah a lot of people don't realize that live sessions like this usually get cleaned up a little in post. Like MTV Unplugged sessions aren't one start to finish performance, they'll do multiple takes of songs. But like you said, it doesn't take anything away from the talent of the performers.
I've seen them live 5 times, and each time is just as amazing as the first. Great vid and look forward to your journey down our rabbit hole that is Jinjer🤘😁🤘💙🇺🇦💛
Love that you have a shoutout to @TheCharismaticVoice. My favorite vocal channel and you’re becoming a strong second. Thank you so much for your insight on Tatiana’s vocals within the music. Looking forward to much more of your content.
That was one of the best reactions to this song I have seen in a while. You're not the first to say it "factory reset" your brain. Julia Nilon had a severe "factory reset" in her reaction.🤣 Jinjer is Ukrainian, from Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, where fighting started in 2014. It's sort of live. Recorded together in studio, it has some post production , with harmonies, but that is all her. Yes, Tatiana uses false fold for the harsh. Mostly self taught, Otep and Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) are some of her harsh vocal influences. This was a remake of an older song, done to showcase Vlad on drums, he had joined the band not long before this. Roman on guitar, and Eugene on bass.
Pisces is a star sign that consists of two fish, joined yet separate one is lurking in the deep, darkness of the ocean the other flashing through the sunlit coral shores they depict the duality within us all
Check out Jinjer's performance of Perennial live at Wacken next. Yes Tatiana is the living embodiment of a Banshee or a Siren, beautiful and terrifying all the same.
Funny that you mentioned Elizabeth from TCV and her knowledge about the harsh vocal techniques. This particular song was the inspiration for Elizabeth to research and investigate this matter. You can find her reaction, it was made few years ago. And yeah, Elizabeth made great interview with Tatiana once. Tatiana is a shy person so she rarely opened enough with the interviewer. That was the exception.
As a musician who covers Jinjer, I loved the technical nature of this reaction. Thanks for breaking down and clearly appreciating Tatiana’s diverse vocal skills. I would suggest the following if you want to hear even more of her range I Speak Astronomy Perennial (live at Wacken) Teacher, Teacher No Horde of Value Sit Stay Rollover Keep ‘‘em coming. You will be blown away.
I wish I could find musicians to cover Jinjer with me! That's some challenging shit! I'm the bassist in a metal cover band, but there's no way we could ever cover Jinjer lol. We have a male singer who does both harsh and clean very well, but Tati is a different beast altogether. I've learned some of Eugene's bass parts and they're difficult but doable. All of them are a real challenge to reproduce. Vlad is an absolute monster. Not many drummers can pull that off. Must be fun!
PETER FINALLY! We only had to harass you for a couple of years, but I'm glad you decided to react to Jinjer "Pisces (Live Session)". Awesome analysis as always!
Excellent job! I never get tired of seeing people discover Jinjer exactly as I did, by experiencing this very video. So many other tracks to experience now including a couple of live performances of Teacher Teacher and Who is Gonna Be The One. Enjoy! 🤘😫
I love those opera singer reactions videos. I'm a metalhead, but i'm singing mostly gregorian chants in a choir. I learn so much about vocal technics through those videos (and The Charismatic Voice's videos too), thank you very much for that !
There are some live recordings from Wacken 2019. "Perennial" being one that is often pointed to as a great one to check out. "Teacher Teacher" music video, "Judgement and Punishment" (one take), "Who is going to be the one", "Astronomy" are representative of some of their older work. Vortex is one of the newer releases that I like. If you're going to dive in, their catalog is deep and eclectic I think.
2:25 LOL you have NO idea how right you are about her "lower register" lol... 7:15 VERY rarely do you hear words like that from Peter. He even thought about holding it back then decided it was absolutely fitting here. Loved it! Jinger - Judgement and Punishment. Another masterpiece that shows her chest and mouth the entire song for professionals to see its real. Also, another song that sounds like "(2 different songs)".
I LOVE Jinjer and Tatiana is the greatest singer I've ever heard. I love your analysis. I've watched several "reaction" videos to this song because they crack me up so much. You break things down on a technical level far more than anyone I've seen and it's great. I've heard the whole "false folds" thing before but didn't know what it meant. You actually explained it. Thanks!!
Her voice in this particular performance was most certainly post processed, layered... but still, her other live performances, more genuine, are very impressive. And most importantly, the band as a whole is great and their songs are just so addictive and interesting.
Elizabeth's (The Charismatic Voice) reaction to this song/video is quite entertaining and instructive - well worth the watch 🙂 The thing that almost no reactor I've watched mentions is that in her guttural/growl voice, Tatiana manages to produce sufficient harmonic content within the noise that (in certain times - not always) a careful listen can detect both a root note and a 5th. The place I hear it the most is in her final "Emeralds are ripped a-wa-a-ay". Great reaction and great content - thanks!
She's my absolute favourite singer. Her voice is IMPECCABLE live 🖤🖤🤟🏻 Jinjer is a fucking superb band. So lucky to have seen them last fall. Also happen to be from Ukraine! You should check out In This Moment, Maria Brinks voice is just another level.
Indeed...they got me interested back in heavy music after a decade hiatus... and now I'm listening to Lorna Shore, Darko US, Face Yourself, Paleface, Slaughter etc :D
I have seen countless professional vocal teachers/performers react and dissect this song, and yet i learned new things from yours! How awesome is that. Thanks!
Great reaction, Peter. Tati is such a fantastic performer, musician, and lyricist. I've seen them live 3 times now, and she and the band are probably the tightest band performing right now. You mentioned Vlad, the drummer; this video was done to introduce him as their new drummer. He is fantastic, but only picked up the drums after his previous band needed a new drummer. He's a classical pianist by training.
Thank you for a good reaction, and welcome to the world of Jinjer. I promise you, this is just a very little bit of what this band can do. Pisces is the gate way drug, but the real high is in the next songs!! They are super creative, mixes genres left and right, weird time signatures, and then they have this singer who is insainly talented. I have seen an interview with Roman, the guitarist, where he says that there are still times when they play live, where he and Eugene, the bass player, lock eyes and is like, “what the fuck did she just do??” Perennial-live from Wacken, Who is gonna be the one-live, the Judgment and punishment-vocal one take version and Teacher Teacher, are the ones i would like to recommend, if you want to see more.
for Tatiana singing more different styles, try Judgement & Punishment (live vocal), Teacher, Teacher (music video), Perennial (live at Wacken), Who's gonna be the one There's a lot more of course, but these will give you an overall impression. There are no bad songs by Jinjer. They are very skilled and professional.
Viewing your early reactions to this performance had me crying from laughter - only because that was my walk. You mirrored my own reaction the first time. Now my husband is a fan. I'm classically trained, yet I LOVE ROCK for so many reasons! This is one! What an incredible genre where musicians are able to stretch the limits of what we imagine a single piece of music should sound like, let alone how sounds/music is produced! The more that I listen to this piece, the more entranced and captivated I become. I've moved well beyond shock. I'm a full-on fan girl and aficionado. Time will tell how long Tati can maintain her vocal capabilities. I don't know of any female vocalist stretching and testing their voice this way ever. A rare talent, no question!
Not something I'll listen to again, but definitely enjoyed the analysis - and your reaction. That alone was worth watching! And I tremendously appreciate you reacting to so many different artists. You've opened up so many new doors for me!
Not all metal is harsh vocals. There’s a long and proud history of metal ballads as well, they are often essential to make well-rounded metal albums. Most well known example is “Nothing else matters” of course. Check out “Tides of Time” and “Canvas of Life” by Epica. And also check out the first album by The Third And The Mortal, titled “Tears laid in earth”.
Great reaction and analysis Peter. I think for most of the vocalists and professionals I have seen react to this the look of utter shock that such a sound could come out of Tati's mouth is universal. It is very cool to see people such as yourself, Elizabeth or Julia Nilon react to something that is outside of your expertise or usual experience. Of course the added bonus is the funny faces and nearly falling off your chairs.
Gorgeous, sultry alto voice...such a free, open tone... oh what great vowels... that vibrato, so effortless! ......holy shitballs, whut...what just happened?! (gahddamn what a powerhouse she is!).
I'm 4 days late commenting so no one might read this, but oh well. Remember the Pisces symbol represents a duality in personality. Just like in this song. The whole band is very talented. Tatiana is a vocal beauty and beast. She is seriously talented and captivating. Yes Tatiana uses her false vocal cords to do hash vocals/grawls in a healthy way. I Seriously recommend Teacher Teacher official video Tatiana's vocal translations are seamless and mindboggling. For very very good live performances definitely react to Perennial live at Wacken pronounced Vaw-ken as it's in Germany. Her stage presence is incredible. Also check out Judgement and Punishment Tatiana's (one take vocal) live performance version. It has possibility a suprising musical influence that's very cool and you get a closer look at her throat, posture changes and vocal techniques. There's even a cute cat in the beginning of the video. I always suggest people new to Jinjer to read through the lyrics before listening to a particular song. I found that helped me adjust when I was new to this type of hash vocals/grawls. Also Their songs get even better once you understand the meaning behind the lyrics. Each Jinger song is unique.
This was the song that got me into this band back in early 2022. I’ve heard it 100’s of 1000’ s of times. I can’t stop myself from stopping what I’m doing and tensing up when I hear “Pisces swimming through the river” because that next part just makes me melt. Since then, I have enjoyed diving into their catalog from Inhale, Don’t Breathe to Wallflowers. Such an amazing band. I actually just saw them for the 3rd time since last December when they were in Myrtle Beach last night.
You should check out Perennial live at Wacken. Its toward the end of their set and when shes speaking to the crowd shes winded but while doing the clean and harsh vocals she does it perfectly. She also has a fantastic stage presence. Amazing breath control. Also, Alex Terrible often drops his mic and growls loud enough you can hear him toward the back. Hes pretty loud without a mic.
To your point about the volume of the harsh vocals, there is one exception to that rule. Alex Terrible often performs live without a mic. I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing him live yet, but it seems to be true. Check out Slaughter To Prevail’s usual first reaction “Demolisher” or their newest song “Viking”.
When visiting underground death metal festivals, there's a lot of female death metal vocalists these days. And I mean A LOT of good ones. That said being able to switch between cleans and growls is difficult for both men and women and it's always impressive. Mikael Åkerfelt of Opeth and Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis do this super well too.
I saw them live, and they are absolutely incredible! It also happened to be my first time hearing them too lol! I had a similar reaction! I was in awe, and have been a fan since!
Igorrr is another band that has fun odd tempo changes. They have separate singers for an opera style and a growl style but they incoporate so many things into their music it is amazing. Diablo Swing Orchestra is yet another fun band.
Not screamo - "growl" is what you're looking for 😄 She's amazing and I LOVE this song, gives me chills every time. I also have naturally low chest voice and it's always really cool to hear other women that do as well (makes it SO much easier to sing along lol). I think the song's name gives away the duality of her style here - the Pisces zodiac sign is 2 fish swimming in opposite directions, so thematically, it's perfect.
Tati is such an amazing singer. Glad you finally got to Jinjer, Peter!

Growling would be the right term, glad to hear an opera singer knows about the mechanics of what she's doing! I'm a metal vocalist myself, I was ready with a technical explanation if you needed it lol
Jinjer's singer Tatiana Shmayluk is crazy good. She did a "one take vocal performance" of "Judgement and Punishment" that will likely blow your mind.
Two voices, two personalities...that's the duality of PISCES
You need to watch KnoxHill's reaction to this. He broke the song down so amazing. And, it was his first listen.
Bro how many Mushrooms did you eat before composing this masterpiece of a comment?🤘😅
@@mikebrighindi Surprisingly, none 😂.
Just saw Jinjer live this past Saturday and she is flawless live. It's absolutely incredible how talented the whole band is.
That's really her voice! I've seen her live at Wacken this year - it's just unbelievable!
Jinjer is everything. All of them are on a whole other level with their instruments ❤️🔥
I have definitely looked to Tatiana as well as Alex Terrible of Slaughter to Prevail as great examples of the low end false cord scream/growl.
Alex is total demon! like how in the hell a human can produce deep gutturals really loud resonance from far distance and pronounced it really well
@@iandavis69 And Alex definitely does not fall into the category where growls and screams are not that loud :p Well not if he wants to anyway :)
@@dabarnhoorn bro i Saw him LIVE in Toronto 🥶
I finally saw them last night!!!! That was one of the best live performances I've seen. I've seen hundreds of concerts over the last 20-30 years. The way she moves and poses while switching up vocals isn't just music, it is an ART! I can't wait to see them again!
Watching people react to Jinjer for the first time just never gets old... :D. Really great reaction and excellent analysis; thanks.
i enjoy watching people's reactions to this song almost as much as i enjoying watching/listening to it. the beginning lures you in then that first heavy line comes in and kicks you in the teeth. she's a siren then a demon and then switches back and forth.
i finally got to see them live about a month ago, they did not disappoint, great show.
There's also a dubbed whisper under "Neptune's child, shivering inside."
Great reaction Peter! It is great source of entertainment to watch reactors hear Tatiana sing Pisces for the first time. You did not disappoint!
Julia Nilon had a severe "factory reset" in her reaction.🤣
Jinjer is Ukrainian, from Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, where fighting started in 2014.
VLAD IS AN ANIMAL. I MEAN. HES A BEAST I'm still learning this song. That shuffle is EXTREMELY difficult
It's really nice to hear educated and experienced vocal coaches appreciate her voice. I personally love Jinger. Great video sir.
Welcome to Jinjer. Yes that is all Tatiana. The band is amazing. "Perennial" live at Wacken would be a good follow up. Great reaction (Subbed)
Pisces is a star sign that consists of two fish, joined yet separate
one is lurking in the deep, darkness of the ocean the other flashing through the sunlit coral shores
they depict the duality within us all
Check out Jinjer's performance of Perennial live at Wacken next. Yes Tatiana is the living embodiment of a Banshee or a Siren, beautiful and terrifying all the same.
I absolutely LOVE watching reactions when she switches to her "metal voice". It is always amusing to see.
I always enjoy seeing your reactions :) Another great song from Jinjer is Perennial (Live @ Wacken).
Fun fact. This video was shot to highlight his drumming. Everyone lost thier minds over Tatiana the goddess
The fairy voice mother hit it right off the mark. She does excellent reviews and knowledge of the voice.
Vocal Coach/Opera Singer FIRST TIME REACTION & ANALYSIS Jinjer "Pisces" (Live Session) - th-cam.com/video/HVyeoo5UCJU/w-d-xo.html
As a musician who covers Jinjer, I loved the technical nature of this reaction. Thanks for breaking down and clearly appreciating Tatiana’s diverse vocal skills.
I would suggest the following if you want to hear even more of her range
I Speak Astronomy
Perennial (live at Wacken)
Teacher, Teacher
No Horde of Value
Sit Stay Rollover
Keep ‘‘em coming. You will be blown away.
I speak astronomy - definitely needs to be reacted more. Quite under reacted.
Enjoy! 🤘😫
Tati is fantastic. That's not her normal clean voice either - she is making it softer so it pops harder when she screams. Such a talent.
amazing input on this Mr Barber :)
Your reaction didn’t disappoint!! Remember - the name of the song - Pisces… two different directions tied together!! Great reaction thanks!
You just hit my highlights there! Those are the very videos I would recommend for someone starting out the journey. Of course every song is excellent.
More like three different songs, that one! All of them stylistically different. And somehow they all hang together perfectly as a song.
Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev is one of their best recorded live performances. Not seen a vocalist react to it yet.
The genuine reaction to Tatiana’s voice never gets old
Elizabeth's (The Charismatic Voice) reaction to this song/video is quite entertaining and instructive - well worth the watch 🙂
The thing that almost no reactor I've watched mentions is that in her guttural/growl voice, Tatiana manages to produce sufficient harmonic content within the noise that (in certain times - not always) a careful listen can detect both a root note and a 5th. The place I hear it the most is in her final "Emeralds are ripped a-wa-a-ay".
Great reaction and great content - thanks!
Time stamp?
I just went to their show tonight, and holy hell I can't even put into words how powerful that performance was. Her vocals were pristine.
I saw them in concert last month in Montreal. That's what she sounds like live. They put on a hell of a show.
Jinjer are one of the best rock bands Ive ever heard. They are ridiculously good (Im not even that big on growl vocals)
He's a classical pianist by training.
everytime goosebumps... no question, the best a female vocalist ever did in this kind of style
I have seen an interview with Roman, the guitarist, where he says that there are still times when they play live, where he and Eugene, the bass player, lock eyes and is like, “what the fuck did she just do??”
Perennial-live from Wacken, Who is gonna be the one-live, the Judgment and punishment-vocal one take version and Teacher Teacher, are the ones i would like to recommend, if you want to see more.
loved the reaction, cool one! love jinjer
for Tatiana singing more different styles, try Judgement & Punishment (live vocal), Teacher, Teacher (music video), Perennial (live at Wacken), Who's gonna be the one
There's a lot more of course, but these will give you an overall impression. There are no bad songs by Jinjer. They are very skilled and professional.
Yes her vocal skills are one of the best you will come across
That sucks. Metal is awesome! But definitely an acquired taste.
Yeah you will listen to it again... when you spring it on someone!
"Perennial live at Wacken" next, please! You can hear/see her change between the voices in a split second, it's an amazing performance.
Gorgeous, sultry alto voice...such a free, open tone... oh what great vowels... that vibrato, so effortless! ......holy shitballs, whut...what just happened?! (gahddamn what a powerhouse she is!).
The thing that blew my mind is how good her diction is when in growl mode. I never have issues understanding her lyrics. Tatiana is a vocal goddess.
Hehehe. You had an eargasm. Love reactions to this. It is mind blowing especially when the person listening is a music professional.
First time watching your video and I got impressed with your perfect pitch skills! Incredible!
Somebody's gonna have a little surprise 😁
😈
E3..oh that's quite low for a female singer. Tatiana: Hold my beer...
Really enjoyred your take on this! Been listening to Jinjer for years now, but I'm always happy when I find someone that's new to it all. :)
They are awesome live.
Loved the discussion about tone vs. noise. That cleared up several questions I've had about the technical side of sound.
Haha, I'd love to see his reaction to Igorrr.
The live video is a fun way to pause and analyze but having seen this band live multiple times it's pure magic when it's in your face.
This musical Jack in the box never gets old. Handing it off to someone new without them knowing what it is.
The two styles reflect in the lyrics. This is a very thoughtfully written song.
Not screamo - "growl" is what you're looking for 😄
She's amazing and I LOVE this song, gives me chills every time. I also have naturally low chest voice and it's always really cool to hear other women that do as well (makes it SO much easier to sing along lol). I think the song's name gives away the duality of her style here - the Pisces zodiac sign is 2 fish swimming in opposite directions, so thematically, it's perfect.
