I just tried a Virtual Boy emulator on my Rift CV1. It's... surprisingly playable... if I could only get it to recognize my controller. The emulator I found has both standard head-locked 3D and an experimental "immersive" mode. The former simulates the basic way Virtual Boy played back in the day just like if you strapped a virtual boy to your head. No head-tracking or anything. The latter puts the graphics on a sort of holographic plane in front of you so you can move around it somewhat. It's like having a giant red tinted 3DS screen in mid air in front of you. I recommend trying out Immersive Mode because it solves some of the main issues of movement-based headaches. I guess they went for the strap-less design on the original because if you played it with a strap without the necessary head-tracking while feeding your brain sensory input that you are moving physically in one way and "virtually" in another... you end up with nausea. Having it on a stand on a table eliminated that part somewhat at least... and most LED's were tinted red at the time. That's what happens when you have to produce VR-tech with mid-nineties tech and price-expactations
Instead of red, why didn't they make it white? And if you need to add color they could have included transparent plastic card sheets which you can stick into the virtual boy in front of the screens. I bet red would have been rarely used then. (oh well, the virtual boy ITSELF was rarely used anyways)
That’s not a bad idea, it worked well enough for the Vectrex. But they probably went with red because it was the cheapest color of LED, Nintendo always does shit like that.
Back then, I feel like the only way to be able to achieve that would be if they used an incandescent or fluorescent light bulb and a system of mechanical shutters (or perhaps a spinning disc with holes in it) for the pixels. That certainly wouldn't last very long.
Ah, yes, the mid 90s. It was so exciting being a kid back then. The successes of the 16-bit consoles made us all look toward the future with hope. The gaming industry started to take off for real, and it was like we all knew that bigger and better things were coming. Those truly were the golden years and i feel both proud and extremely privileged to have grown up during that time. :)
Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are amazing. The others give you a watered down experience, and I think it's bad for the industry because it will turn people off when they don't understand what a full VR experience is like.
kingcrimson234 psvr is really not bad, though the game selection is a little lacking. Google cardboard is really just a gimmick, but kinda cool I guess. Windows mixed reality is fine but most people don't have the ckmputer to handle it, the vibe, or the rift. Oculus go is a little ovepriced for what it offers

1997 : new virtual reality tech really cool
10 years later, tech develops nobody cares about it
another 10 years, everybody cares about it again
Looks like the timeline for Javascript.
What's coming up in the next 10? VR forgotten again? :)
Actuually, most likely! The hype of VR with more and more games coming out, seems like *now* is the most interest while it's fairly fresh, thay finally got down the technology (for the most part), so I can easily imagine it dying down, quieting down after a decade. Unless I'm missing some potential BREAKTHROUGH - wouldn't that be cool... :P
1 year later no one cares again
@@mclovinpo with Robot Rescue hitting the 10/10 and being one of the best PS4 sellers in 2018 (no, not VR only, but PS4 in general) , seems like you are living under a rock
Yeah I still don't care about it.
Did he just insult the LEGENDARY game known as Jack Bros at the end?
I would donate one of my kidneys to see the nerd do a review of SMT 1.

"Shoot everybody and rescue the people." That makes sense
14:37 it only took 9 years for him to predict Doom on VR, and it was released in December 1 of 2017.

Man.. It has been over 10 years! I got back to the past by watching AVGN episodes. So much nostalgia!
oh boy, this is so nostalgia, im glad that you still continues this series
25 years later Nintendo hasn’t figured out how to add a strap to the virtual boy because of the Virtual Boo
@@jarkspore true
Also, at the time, blue LEDs weren't commercially viable yet. So color wasn't possible. White LEDs wouldn't be existing until blue.
I don't miss it.
1995: Now we've the original Virtual Boy which it flopped only 1 year
2019: Now we've got the official new Virtual Boy: Nintendo Labo edition

Don't forget the virtual reality headsets. Oculus, HTC Vive and PS VR.
This dude is an legend and a huge part of my childhood
They should revise it with today's technology, make it comfortable and truly portable. It could be amazing.
Manuel Martinez There's already like 5 VR Headsets right now, and they're amazing.
They did. The 3DS was pretty successful.
Oculus go is a little ovepriced for what it offers
my friends dad bought these when they were on sale and hoarded like 15 of these

People should read the comments before posting, because every fucking person has already pointed out it resembles an Oculus Rift.
So true
it resembles the oculus rift
Curtis Young The Oculus RIft has a headsrap though.
Hey Curtis Young IDK if anyone else has said this, but the Virtual Boy totally looks like Oculus Rift!
Don't they mean the Oculus Rift looks like a Virtual Boy?
12:25 The words you were looking for to describe 3D Tetris were "An Isometric Game". An Isometric Drawing gives distortion to objects to make them look 3D on a 2D plane.
I watched this video using the 2D->3D conversion built into my Smart TV and surprisingly it restored the 3D effect even despite James having to film through the eye peice. The geometry is so simplistic that it's likely very easy for the software to determine how to draw the scene's depth.
3:18 i didnt even notice this was a transition
And that's how you do a perfect transition 👏
"A comment about how we have now Oculus/Vive/GearVR"

the virtual boy was black and white, but your eyes bleed when you look in it, so the white turns red.
2:44 he just made the prototype of the Oculus Rift
This video is as much a historical artifact in 2022 as the Virtual Boy was in 2009. Casual swearing. Campy video effects. I love it!
