  • The new BYD Atto 3 is selling up a storm, but is the small Chinese electric SUV the best in its class? 👉 Full Review: www.carsales.com.au/editorial...
It’s not quite the cheapest EV available in Australia, but the new 2023 BYD Atto 3 is relatively affordable at around $50,000 before on-road costs and potential rebates.
The small Chinese electric SUV is also packed with technology, offers an appealing amount of space, presents an intriguing interior and exterior design and delivers silent and responsive EV performance.
But how does it stack up against its small battery-powered SUV rivals? Bruce Newton gets behind the wheel of the 2023 BYD Atto 3 Extended flagship to find out.

Lovely car in my book. Easy to get used to. Value for the money when I bought it -- November 2022. Well made, no failieurs so far. German design,--- and I love it. Chinese made --- and done well! Over 2 month ownership, couldn’t be more happier. Very comfortable, smooth, quiet and very smart. Can do most of things just talk to the car, almost immediate responding, amazing. Plug into normal power socket in garage is more then enough for daily driving. Never need to look into fuel prices and go to service stations anymore. With my electricity supplier only cost $3.5 per 100kms.

We loved ours. Had part of my Atto 3 damaged because two screws fell out under the front end. Was told by a BYD service manager it would not be covered under warranty because MyCar did the first service. He said I would need to try to get MyCar to pay for it myself! Booked that service on the BYD web site. Clear breach of consumer law regarding car warranty that they will be wise to back down from. Hard to be happy about this sort of service.

The 480km range shown on the dash is the Chinese range (not WLTP). In Australia and NZ, they only claim 420km which we have averaged over the first 10,000km in the 6 months we've owned our Atto 3 (14.8kw/100km). Excellent car and we highly recommend it.
P.S. BYD, how about an OTA update to change listed range to 420km as you advertise it. The 480km range shown simply disappoints most people when they don't achieve it.

It's not really an SUV... it's simply a raised hatchback. Running out of electricity is exactly the same as running out of petrol. Simply make sure you're topped up before driving long distances. Because of the chemistry used, it can be charged to 100% constantly so you plug it in when you get home (or work) and it's always fully charged. 400kms is more than any normal folk use in a day so you'll never run out electricity. LFP is cheaper, lasts longer, can be charged to 100% every cycle, and don't catch on fire as easily. The ternary lithium batteries used by most non-Chinese EV makers are more expensive, and should only be charged to 80% in normal use, and are more prone to run away fires if punctured, but are more energy dense and has slightly improved cold weather performance.

Costs you another $9 if you need to go run errands or to bunnings or to Kmart. Fking $18 a day. Also even at $200k in Australia, there is no way you can get a 4wd EV, so this BYD at $60k is a bargain and its climbing sales to second best-selling EV in Australia explains it.
