      Okay, well i hope you enjoy your holiday, defiantly want to come back in the summer
      go up to north Queensland from brisbane in a motorhome.
      Stop off along the way, end in the whitsundays then fly back from Cairns, well worth doing and get to see so much more stopping at different points along the way.

    I did that Qantas flight from Melbourne to UK via Perth, return in 2019. But I upgraded to premium economy. Being 6 foot tall, I was so happy I did. Seats were wider and heaps of leg room…. And meals were from business class. Like you Rob, I can’t sleep on planes. As long as you go to bed at a normal time, you’ll be fine.

    • @CharlieandRob

      We did look at the premium economy seats on the way in with jealousy 😉. Luckily we have not suffered from jet lag at all - I think staying awake so long forced us onto Melbourne time!

    hi Rob & Charlie, welcome to Oz! I really enjoyed this vlog, now you know what Aussies go through when we fly to the UK (or US)! 3 hours waiting at Heathrow? Time to explore every square inch of the airport that I possibly can. ✈✈ Onto the plane. Little leg room, barely enough room to move your feet around. Cannot sleep on planes either.
    Oh the hot meals on the plane... what a reputation. Dinner at 4pm, breakfast at 2am. Some foods are not meant for planes. To some extent it is a function of the food quality at the origin airport.
    The little things like the headphones and the entertainment system if they come across a little cheap or not up to scratch. To top it off, delays. Not surprised that you were delayed with Qantas.
    When I have flown to the UK usually have flown with Singapore Airlines or Emirates. Yes you stop one or twice but I appreciate stretching my legs around the terminal. I have even slept at the airport transit hotel so I can shower and rest. It also feels nice to be part of Asia even if is just temporary.
    On your way home you will follow the day around or the night around the world. Coming to Australia it is flying into the day, into the night, into the day again.
    Hope you both enjoy your holiday down under. Enjoy the footy!!

    i did a long haul flight to the US in May and made sure to book seats behind the bulkhead best decision ever for the little bit of extra legroom,

  • @RobWVideo
    @RobWVideo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Three things make long-haul flights livable for me:
    Bulkhead seats - the extra you pay is worth it for the legroom and ability to bend and straighten you knees. Also makes it easier to get to the toilet if you have the window seat.
    Cheap noise-cancelling headphones - I picked up a pair for $AU70 (GBP40) from Amazon and I use them wirelessly with my own device or plugged into the in-flight video screen.
    Comfortable slip-on shoes with gel insoles - great for the long walk through the airport and gently supports your feet while in flight. Also good if you have to take off your shoes for security screening.

    • @CharlieandRob
      @CharlieandRob  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I had my shoes off the whole time. We both have good earbuds but obviously they don't connect to the plane screens which is annoying.

      Unless you are wanting to stop off and spend time in Singapore (for example, on the way for a few days), I would definitely suggest doing this route - it's long and cramped but in our opinion the quicker you get there, the longer you have at your destination!

    I can't say that I don't miss this, because I actually do! I do feel your pain about how long it is, but I was way too excited when I got there. My flight went from Omaha - Denver - Los Angeles - Auckland[1] - Melbourne. I was tired, but wide awake and excited when I got there, because I got in in the morning in Melbourne, which would have been mid-afternoon the previous day in Omaha, but it was such a rite of passage, as it was my first trip ever on my own, and first international trip.
    there's so much to do there, and so much that I miss, so I am definitely envious of you being there, so enjoy that well deserved trip!
    [1] I accidentally missed the hall to the in transit area, and went through the door to customs, thereby entering New Zealand, when I didn't have a visa for New Zealand at that time. Thankfully airport security took pity on me and let me back through, as it was only a refuel and defumigation stop!

    When I travelled to Turkey from Australia, I was with my sister and a friend. We had to stop in Singapore for 5 hours before flying on to Turkey. It took about 26 hours all up. I watched the plane logo on the display and kept an eye on the altitude and which country we were flying over etc. In the way home weeks later, I really enjoyed seeing the edge of Australia coming into view; it was beautiful seeing the coast of Broome and then seeing the desert and Uluru. It was amazing. I know you guys are back home now. Keep your good memories of Australia. I did a flight back to Australia from Costa Rica via New York, LA and finally Melbourne. The wait between New York to LA was probably as bad as your one from Perth to Melbourne. Although I was not prepared for the cold weather in New York, it was minus something there. When back to Melbourne about a day and half later it was about 40 in summer so I had felt -15 in their winter to 40 here at Melbourne airport. There was a 10 hour wait between flights at LA. I literally paid well over 100 for a 4 hour sleep in a motel as I was just too tired and wanted sleep and hanging in the airport for 10 hours would have done my head in.
      Sounds like Charlie had some sleep on your flight but you virtually none. That would have been tough.

    In-flight food really so bad, or is our perception of it just a little off? As it turns out, there’s a scientific reason why food is less savoury at 30,000 feet. Once at altitude, the combination of the dry air and pressure change reduces our taste bud sensitivity. In fact, our perception of saltiness and sweetness drops by around 30 percent at high altitude.

    If you’re flyng QANTAS on the way back home as well, ask for extra bread rolls and some butter. I was still hungry after my dinner and asked the steward if there was any more bread. He brought me three more and some butter pats! Also good to save peanut butter, jams and Vegemite items you can get in flight or at cafes etc., they can come in handy.

    Ginger is the natural worlds remedy for travel sickness, motion sickness on a plane or boat. lol. had it as a kid but never since, can't explain why I don't get motion sickness anymore but that is why they serve it. been in a 7m swell in a 20 foot boat and was fine. You got lucky in Perth, the next day was storming like mad. Go Swannies. usually landing in Perth is very turbulent as the plane enters the 'Fremantle Doctor' the nickname for our Westerly evening wind, WA is very Windy as you should know already.

    Dont forget not to touch anything you have no intention of buying inside the mini fridges. They have sensors in them and if you disturb them buy picking up to look at them, they get charged to your account as if you did use them.
    So be mindful when it comes time to pay your bills after your stay for anything that was charged and you never used. They will have to send someone up to look at the fridge and let them know that everything is still there so they can knock them off the bill.
