My first experience with timing chairs was around 1964. It was a dodge or Plymouth 318. The chain had jumped causing valve damage. At least one 318 a month came through our small three bay shop in Andover Mass. Coinsidently, Jay Leno's parents frequented our Gulf facility.
.We saved many customers from having valve damage by diagnosing loose chains and letting them know before they failed. We removed the distribtor cap, moved the crank bacl and forth to see how many degrees the crank moved before the rotor moved.....Walt

Hey Walter, yes that is how you can tell without pulling the timing chain cover. I remember phenolic timing chain gears. The teeth would break off and the chain would slip. Youd get debris in the oil pan too.

Thanks for the informative video, Nick. Fat Panda helps with a very important job at your shop: He's making sure the food you give him is of acceptable quality. It requires constant testing!

Hey Kayeninetwo, yeah he demands the best cat food and he will pester me until I fill his bowl. He likes to hang out in there and snoop around. Sometimes he catches a mouse too. Hes a knucklehead.

Hey Mark, he is pretty curious. He likes to sniff around all the cars and jumps inside and sniffs around. Hes a good kitty.

Thank you Nick, at least it's not one of the fiber sprockets, that chain most likely would have jumped already if it had been one of those setups.
A loose chain causes a few issues, like starting, and highway performance.
Everyone needs a vacation, we understand, and will always be here. 👍

Hey JR, thanks. Yeah, those phenolic gears were the worst. I dont even know if they make them any more. Ive always used steel replacements.
