  • In this video I speak about whats different between 1964 1/2 mustangs built between March 1964 and August 1964, from all other 1965 model year Mustangs built after August 1964. This is not an all inclusive video, I left many things out that I just didn't know at the time.

With every car, comes a learning curve, I think that is a part of the addiction...learning all about the car.
    Thanks Nick. 😊

Hey Alvin, good point. Part of the old car guy disease is the desire to tinker and figure everything out. It sure is a fun journey. Thanks.

Also note, you have an oil fill tube that goes into your timing cover, 260V8 engine. Air cleaner would had originally been light blue along with light blue valve covers and no oil filler hole. Your intake should have a road draft tube in the rear and no PCV. Possible someone used a 289 and added the 260 timing cover. Don’t loose that generator cover (metal with rubber stapled to it, worth it’s weight in gold). As for the pass seat adjustment, later 64.5 did have an adjustable pass seat not sure the date change over. Your sill plate covers appear to had been replaced, the 64.5 had square outer corners, 65/66 had rounded corner and repops are rounded. Many many other odds and ends you’ll find for your 64.5. Your fresh air pull should have the letter ‘A’ on it. Peddles should not have a recessed outline, heater controls will have ‘off’ in the middle. Hood, headlight buckets, spare tire hold down…on and on there are many many things different. I recently picked up a mostly original 64.5 (July 15, 1964) Also, I noticed you have the ‘visibility option’ which included 2 speed wipers, windshield washers and remote driver mirror. Google and explore, you have a unique mustang there.

Hey ScroatBagGarage, thanks for the good info. Yes, the oil fill tube is on the timing cover. The original valve covers were gold and there were two different colors of gold on them. No blue on them. For some reason, I assumed that they should be gold. I even bought the gold paint from Mustangs Etc and they told me that was the original color. Thunderbirds are gold. Yes, the intake has a road draft tube. When I took it off, it was packed half way with steel wool that was completely soaked with oil and dirt. The intake was also packed with steel wool too. The road draft tube gasket is not available so I had to make that. I wont throw that generator cover away, I dont throw anything away. The distributor was correct and had the correct date code but it is bad so I bought a new one from CJ Pony, similar to the original. I will keep the old distributor. I bought all the correct power steering parts for a 64.5 from Kevin in Oregon and installed all that. It looks great. I painted everything gloss black except for the valve covers. Kevin found me the original radio that starts with a 6. I do have the A in the vent knob. The car does not have a remote mirror. Someone put a pony interior into this car and the door panel has the remote mirror bezel but the mirror is not a remote. How did you know I have the visibility option? The car does have windshield squirters but the motor is bad. Good luck with your new Mustang project. I really like mine. Im almost finished with phase 1 soon. Thanks.

    Hi Nick!
Some other details that differentiate a '64 1/2 Mustang from the typical '65 production were as follows; Highly polished windshield wiper arms. Chrome - plated round wiper bezels on the threaded wiper arm pivot. Cowl panel around the windshield wiper pivot openings was flat, not contoured like later production '65 Mustangs. MUSTANG name badge on lower front fenders was shorter at 4 3/8" in length, later ones were about 5" long. Beveled upper edge at the outer grille surround and a corresponding 'lip' extending downward on the outer corner of hood to conceal the gap when hood is closed. Interior door lock knobs were color-keyed to the interior, later ones were chrome - plated. Gray Burtex trunk mat - later cars had a rubber mat. Gas cap has no securing cable - later cars had a looped cable attaching the gas cap to the tail light panel so it couldn't be lost or stolen.
You're correct, the Interior Decor Group (pony interior) option was not available on Mustangs until April of '65. A previous owner added that to your car at some point but neglected to also include the 5 - dial instrument cluster with simulated walnut applique which was part of that interior decor group package. The simulated walnut applique on the glove box door was part of the interior decor group - that you do have. It looks to me like somebody added an aftermarket simulated woodgrain surround on your Falcon style instrument cluster - it would have had a satin black camera case finish from the factory. That center floor console was an option and when it was combined with the Interior Decor Group it had the walnut applique trim on the top like the one in your car has to tie in with the walnut trimmed dash and glove box doors.
Mustangs are great, I've owned a number of them over the years. They are far easier to work on than a Thunderbird that's for sure. Then again, they can't compare to a Thunderbird - apples to oranges!
Have fun with your '64 1/2 Mustang!!
    Scott

Going by your build date 17F (June17), the factory engine would have been the 260 C.I.D. V8 which was used in early Mustangs through July 31, 1964. This would also explain the casting date on the engine block being inconsistent with the build date of your car.

@@scottlogan2971his car is a D code. That is a 4 barrel carburetor 289 with the early 5 bolt bell housing. The F code was the 2V 260 with the 5 bolt bell housing. In 64.5's there was the U code 170 six cyl., F 260 2V, D 289 4V and the K HiPo 289. In 65's once all the earlier engines were used up there was the T code 200 six cyl, C code 289 2V, A code 289 4v and the K 289 HiPo.

Hey guys, thanks for the info. Do you think it is possible that the engine could be a month later then the car? Maybe the car stood around for some reason? Just wondering. Thanks.

Hello Nick. Nice little car. I like the interior also. Notice the vacuum line missing or off of the distributor? I would get all of the hoses and stuff like that replaced and just drive it around like you said.

Hey George, I didn't notice the vacuum advance hose off but it it was, that's only because I was replacing it and had not yet put it back on. I usually take the long way around the barn so when I replace the heater hoses, Ill completely rebuild the heater core and box since that all has to come out anyway. That will be a winter project. I did replace that little piece of heater hose though. Hopefully it will last out the summer. Thanks.

Another cool project. Are the heater/defroster controls vaccum operated or cable?
Thanks for sharing Nick. I saw a 64 fairlane on Utube that I think was a Cobra equipped model. I’ve been looking for one for a long time and didn’t think any existed. So was pretty cool to see another one. The only one I had ever seen was my neighbor bought one new in ‘64. A real fast car in its day.

Hey Gary, the heater/defroster controls are cables. They work but are a little stiff. New heater boxes and cables and everything else related is available new so Ill be doing that this winter. Yes, 1964 had a lot of cool and fast cars. I remember them too. Thanks.

Thanks Nick. So happy to hear that they’re cables. I have a ‘65 TBird and you know the nightmare of 50 year old rubber hoses! I bought mine a year ago. Advertised as excellent in and out…$8K later and still not finished. The vacuum system really has me up a tree!

    • @vintagethunderbirdrepair9426
      @vintagethunderbirdrepair9426  ปีที่แล้ว

@@garyfain7235 Hey Gary, the vacuum system is very easy and you can rebuild it without taking out the dash. But you do have to take out the heater box. Its only as hard as removing some panels and then replacing some vacuum hoses and maybe a vacuum motor or two. When I first learned, I replaced one hose at a time until they were all replaced. I also color coded them with colored tie wraps. Its not hard. Its just a lot of work. You can do it. Good luck.

Thanks Nick for the encouragement! Gotta say tho my eyes aren’t up to the task. Only wish you were still in California cause I know you would do it right… along with replacing the evaporator (oops, the dash has to come out) and getting the air conditioning working. Oh and the power window switches in the console… Oh and the left turn signal controller…
Good luck with Mr. Green and your “new” car the Mustang. Mustang appears to be a lot less work then Mr. Green. Can’t believe the front end work you did on the caddie. Amazing patience and determination
