- When Men in Black first hit screens back in 1997, it instantly became a fan favorite. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones made the perfect odd couple taking on a planet full of Aliens hiding in plain sight. Though as Men in Black progressed into sequels and animated shows, it became obvious the franchise was in a tail spin. But how exactly did Men in Black go from beloved sci-fi blockbuster, to the forgettable sequels we all got.

The first one was truly iconic, the second did not feel bad and the third felt like the closure it should have had.
Plus the MIB and 21 Jump Street crossover had so much potential, and they opted for a lazy soft reboot with a trash script instead.
The animated series was a better continuation of the 1st film then the movies
I wish they got L back for the sequel, 2 would’ve been better that way
first was great second was a money grab which they were forced to make and the third was a okay we will tie it up again nicely and not fuck with it this time.
That little twist..... awkward though it was(the uniform) actually hit me pretty dam hard.
Usually when movie studios try to "recapture the magic" of original films *AND* try to "play it safe" they fail in spectacular fashion. This is a prime example of that 😩
You'd expect them to elevate the Sequel, with J & L as the New Duo, but instead They want Old Man K for the Memberberry Points.
No sequel has EVER "recaptured the magic" look at successful sequels, they take the existing concept and make NEW magic. Terminator 2 flipped the concept of a bulletproof terminator as an assassin to a bulletproof terminator as a protector against and even greater threat.

As a New Yorker, the original MIB movie holds a special place in my heart. They strategically placed aliens throughout New York City in a way that felt oddly natural.

just because people have higher credentials than you, don’t be afraid to be different and use critical thinking instead of following the herd. the whole scene showcased that tbh. it took me multiple viewings to figure that out doe, since I was too young back in the day when I was watching this repeatedly.

One thing to note is that he first one was ad libbed a lot, making the chemistry between Jones and Smith feel very real and witty. International didn't quite have this.
Outside of the original classic, the animated series is easily my favourite instalment of this franchise. Jeff Kline really knows how to do great adaptations 😊

I still play that song from time to time on parties and get always asked what this is and people can't believe that it is from the MIB Animated series. I also think that the Godzilla and Ghost Busters Animated series came from the same team. Loved the whole aesthetic

Top Gun Maverick, MIB 3, Bad boys 3 and Ghostbusters afterlife are my favorite sequels that came out years after the original
One of the key issues I noticed with International was Tessa's character. There seems to be a trend of interpreting equality as female lead who's super amazing and praised by everyone and everything is centred around.
yeah the first movie established this rigorous selection process involving top class military training due to the weapon use involved, the whole training sequence, and then International was like "ok she's good at computers, and she has an interest in aliens? ok you're hired!"

hollywood’s obsession with CGI is like gaming obsession with open world 3D games. Sure when done well it’s awesome, but when done poorly (which let’s be honest it usually is) it literally ruins what otherwise would’ve been a pretty decent piece of media

Hollywood has been taking all the wrong lessons from Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and MIB International may be the biggest example of that. He's a talented actor and deserves a more diverse career than just standard blockbuster fare.

I'll be honest I enjoy MIB 1-3 all equally. There's just so much nostalgia for me behind the trilogy. Sure its not perfect all the way through, but I thoroughly enjoy watching the trilogy of films. MIB International definitely failed for me, but I'll always enjoy the first three films no matter what

Men in Black 1 is amazing, and still holds up to this day. It’s an amazing blend of sci fi, action, with great characters and a tightly written story. And it was pretty funny.
Men In Black 2, much like “Thor, Love and Thunder, focused too much on comedy, and side stepped everything that made the previous installment so great.
Men In Black 3 was truly a return to form, and the proper sendoff that the series needed. It has everything that made the first one so great, and they went above and beyond to delivery one hell of a finale.

I never really felt the first two MIB sequels were that bad. They definitely paled in comparison to the first one, but they were enjoyable enough in their own right. I didn’t really trust the fourth movie from the start, though. It had been too long since the last movie and introducing a new cast felt like writing on the wall for a potential disaster.
i honestly wish that 21 Jump street/MIB movie happened. its such a wacky idea for a crossover i think even if it was bad it would have been more memorable than International which is just the epitome of a bland forgettable movie. at the time Jump Street was super popular i think it really could have helped bring in new fans to the MIB franchise
Men in Black is one of my first beloved childhood films. It's an absolute classic, and proved to have captured lightning in a bottle in the long run.

MIB is a classic like Jurassic Park and Matrix...masterpiece all of them, but they want to squeeze out more money with a half assed story :/
I agree that the sequels feel like they’re trying to mimic the originality of the first and that it REALLY didn’t work for International, but 2 and 3 are actually solid. 2 is right up there with the first just about, though it is annoying they had to retcon so much to try and mimic it. 3 had no right to be as good as it was given the time stretch and cash grab vibes. They managed to give it more emotional depth and heart than I actually think they achieved with J’s broken heart in the 2nd. Putting them in the same “bad sequel” bucket along with International is unfair, I feel.
After I watched Men In black international, I came back to truly like Men in Black 2😂
You pretty much explained the downfall of 99% of entertainment quality from the late 90s to recent years using MIB as an example. Very cool.

I adore the men in black series, MIB 3 is my favorite of the original trilogy. I saw the potential for a great story in men in black international, but they didn't do a good enough job sowing the seeds to warrant the emotional ending it was going for. Hemsworth having been neuralized was a great idea, and they kind of hinted at it but not enough for it to have been as strong of a payoff as it had the potential to be.
I think the biggest issue of the fourth film was that they tacked on "International" - like you didn't see, when Zed is talking with some agents you can see that they're all over the world, or during the reveal that many famous people are aliens they also show that they don't live in New York City - the organization is already international.
Part 1 and 3 all day (especially Josh Brolin's Agent K. He was amazing lol. He nailed Tommy Lee Jones mannerism). Part 2 was ok.

This is a definition of a rollercoaster franchise: 1st up, 2nd, down, 3rd up, international dooown.
MIB 3 worked for me because of the twist near the end. There were hints to it throughout the film, but that twist, they nailed it beautifully.
1 to 3 is fun but international is just dumpster fire

In all honesty I think Men In Black 3 is my favorite. Not just saying it to feel different I just feel like its the perfect finale that was able to reach notes the previous ones hadn't reached yet. I love how it goes further into the character's history, it does an amazing job at wrapping everything up while continuing to enrichen the story.
MIIIB made me more emotional than it had any business doing lol. But the original was everything when I was a kid! That's where my interest in sci-fi started, from what I can remember.
M.I.B II and III retconn so much of the first movie that I swear someone could come up with a theory that all three movies are parallel dimensions or different timelines and it wouldn't even sound that crazy.
I would like to think about that way. Even tone wise, these movies don't build a good trilogy
Similar to Idiana Jones, I did like the first film, the second was okay, but it wasn't until the third that I really loved it (while the 4th can be completely forgotten)

I swear the 90's was a golden age for movies. It's like we had unique and fun ideas and were less politically divided than ever, which lead to movies just being about the human element and fun, rather than political messaging and rehashes.
Its when the wackiness of the 60s met the 80s technical prowess, the 90s truly were lightning in a bottle.

The editing, the music, the steady narration, the clear expository analyses, I loved every second of it. One of my favorite movies being discussed was the cherry on top. Thank you for mentioning the cartoon TV series! It did many things right and it frustrates me that most MIB youtube videos doesn't even mention it. When we discuss vovies it's always "the script and the plot are what matters the most", but when it come to MIB Animated Series, it's suddenly "just a cartoon" without even considering its writing.
In hindsight Kay retiring should have been saved for MiB 3, after the opening credits Kay decides he wants to have a normal life but before he can, he's notified that Boris the Animal has escaped. The rest of the movie plays out the same and in the end Jay has a quick talk with Kay before giving a speech about what an amazing guy he is and then before getting neuralized, tips a waiter so a meteor doesn't hit Earth.
Speaking of Men In Black, I had a realization last month that there are multiple second movie installments that came out in 2002, 20 years ago!
Blade 2, Cinderella 2, Men In Black 2, Harry Potter 2, The Santa Clause 2, Star Wars Episode 2, Spy Kids 2, The Lord of the Rings 2, Stuart Little 2, Black Mask 2, The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 and Peter Pan 2. So far, I have no interest in watching Cinderella 2 or Hunchback 2 as I've seen reviews of them and I haven't watched either of the Black Mask movies or the Blade trilogy or The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I have The Fellowship of the Ring on DVD but I haven't gotten around to watching it. And it hasn't stopped me from finding reviews for my 2002 sequel playlist. Have you seen either of them?

I think novelty was one of the biggest strengths of the first movie and the core of the intrigue of Men In Black. The minute they tried to sell Will Smith’s character as suddenly a seasoned vet, it lost its biggest strength. The rabbit hole should’ve gotten deeper and we should’ve been allowed the experience of discovering even deeper weirdness with Agent J instead of just covering the same ground each time with him being pro. It’s like if the after the first Harry Potter, Harry was suddenly a fully developed master wizard in the sequels. The whole point is discovery and growth and Agent J didn’t have anywhere else to go when MIB2 started. 🤷🏽♂️
Men in black 2 was released when I was 8 years old and I loved it. It had silly scenes that I remember were hilarious! Obviously now as an adult they’re super cheesy but it’s supposed to be silly
While it pales next to 1, MIB 2 definitely has some good jokes and moments in it. I was about 9 or 10 when it came out and really enjoyed seeing it at the drive-in.
And Lara Flynn-Boyle in lingerie definitely jumpstarted puberty for me. Even if the scene was kinda traumatizing for young me as well.
I liked MIB 3 better than the previous two I grew up with, and managed to carefully tow the line between comedy and drama
You know what they should have done for MiB 2? Not retcon the ending! K should have only gotten part of his memory back from watching the episode about the Light of Zartha and slowly being to remember who Laura was. Also I think it would have been funnier if he stayed neutral during the entire film and was acting like Jay in the first movie.
Agent L also should be in this movie as J's partner. The scene with Agent T and Jeff could've been part of MiB field that he failed, and Serleena shouldn't show her face until the climax.
Still feel like MIB + 21J St. would've been a winning combo and definitely one I would've liked to see.
The weird thing about this is that I have been on a kick involving collecting movie tie-in novelizations and I had ordered the novels of the first two films and two additional stories. So, in a way I got back into Men in Black.
I remember seeing the fourth film in theaters and I didn't mind it. Of course, I wonder if I should give it another watch to see where I stand with it. I know some people speak negatively about the second film, and that movie was really short. Not sure if it holds up, but I might give it another watch. I remember liking the first and third films.

My best memories since moving to New York, are when I recognized some places from the mib. It made this city magical. Most local New Yorkers don't even know what the Mib HQ is there for.
Some of my issues with MIB
1. They thought they needed Tommy Lee Jones in order to have a sequel
2. they tried to juggle a cartoon series and movie series at the same time
3. they put too much time between sequels
4. They let Will Smith go off script and just riff and improvise too much
Well. MIB2 IS a Will Smith movie and it's a comedy.
1 and 4 are some of the best parts of the trilogy lol.

Tessa Thompson’s character was everything that was wrong with MIB:I, but I’ve never found her convincing in any of her films.
I really loved the Men in Black 3 the most. No forgotten Princess would be would be not romance subplot.

I still wish we got that MIB x 21 Jump Street crossover. Since 21 Jump Street was a revival of the 1980s 21 Jump Street series, it woulda made viewers go back and realise, "holy crap, there are aliens in this series, plus Agent K and J just off screen somewhere?!" Of course J wasn't recruited yet but if it's all connected it woulda meant that this entire time (for example, the pilot episode of 21 Jump Street 1980s) the events in M.I.B 3 with the moon landing already happened with Boris the Animal. Kinda crazy but it woulda been so cool

In my head, the first one is the only "men in black", the follow-ups were "men in grey" imitations.
My take on the Men In Black franchise, much like Ghostbusters. They somehow tend to rehash what came before ala storybeats or returning villain with GB Afterlife. Ghostbusters The video game was the best sequel out of the quadrilogy because they're expanding on lore that was briefly mentioned in the first movie, while they also introduced new tech to combat entities that are immune to the proton packs which I really like. The one gripe I have with the game's story was when Peter was hitting on Ilyssa, I dunno, much like the whole Louis and Janine thing. It just feels wrong to me. This was taking place in 91, and we weren't given much explanation on why this was the case within the story.
Speaking of relationships, another small thing I hate in both GB, MIB 2 and a couple of sequels I know is, when relationships between characters either reset like Peter and Dana, or get nixed altogether ala J x L, and Egon x Janine without any good explanation, or even reason within the story.
Comparing those two franchises is very intriguing, and I see your points on a lot of it. GHOSTBUSTERS and MEN IN BLACK both started out incredibly strong with high-concept premises, were popular with audiences, had animated series that expanded on their worlds, and were even set in New York City! But neither one had sequels that ever quite recaptured their respective magic, whether the original stars were involved or not. (Oh, and Chris Hemsworth has now been involved with both franchises!) Thank you for the insights!
PS: I likewise agree with you in being annoyed when franchises (in)conveniently disregard established characters and/or relationships. Keeping fans satisfied and treating us like we remember plot points and care isn't that hard!
2 Ghostbusters sequels were good (not great) though that's 2 more than Mib has
Marcel Walker Don't forget the fact that they both are owned by Sony Pictures.
I don't mind the A plots on these sequels. It's the B plots that can either make or slightly put a dent on the overall presentation.

I thought GB 2 was alright for what it is, but still, there are plenty of things left to be desired, to say the least.
GB Video Game is the best one out of the 3 sequels.
GB Afterlife, I really liked it at first, but as time moved on, I thought it was alright. bringing back Gozer felt a bit tiresome. I honestly wish it was either one of the villains from The RGB's brought to the screen like The Boogie Man, Samhain, Cthulu, The Grundel, or probably even Prodius or just a new villain from Ivo Shandor's lineage at least.
The RGB's was great until J. Michael Straczynski was nixed off the show.
I didn't watch much of Extreme Ghostbusters.
Not only that but they literally changed Janine character. The Louis thing felt a bit weird but he was hanging out at the firehouse more as their lawyer.

MIB 2 was the first out of the franchise I saw as a kid so it has a special place in my heart. I love it after all these years and I honestly couldn’t fathom that people hated it 😂
1 and 3 were great. 2 and international, not so much. Also I think 3 had more going for it then just the characters and cast, I think it had a great story and was overall a pretty good movie. It doesn’t top the first one, but I think it works really well as a sequel
Idk if it would have actually worked or made the movie better, but I think Chris Hemsworth should have been a twist villain in MIB: International. Throughout the movie, there are several throwaway lines saying he's changed (I'm guessing since his and Liam Neeson's original fight with the hive mind alien), which end up leading to nothing, because it's Liam Neeson's character that is the bad guy. Idk whether maybe the lines were meant to suggest PTSD or something, but they never really get resolved. I think both Chris and Liam could have been the villains, like at first it's revealed to Liam and then when they're confronting him, Chris reveals himself too.
Like I say idk if it would have worked, but I think it would have been cool to see Chris Hemsworth as a villain (hopefully aore compelling one than in Ghostbusters anyway lol)

I actually liked her in Thor Ragnarok, don't get me wrong she was still annoying asf but that was a big part of the character, I honestly wouldn't expect anything less than painful from an alcohol abusing overconfident bounty hunter who lost her people and dealt with it in an unhealthy way, which I guess is the point, she NEEDS shitty characters to play, where it makes sense for the character to be a POS for her acting to work, because she doesn't have any range, all she can properly play is herself, which is annoying, stuck up, arrogant, and full of clearly underlying issues that haven't been dealt with, and when she is in that role, she does great, but short of that no f*cking way.

I really wanted to like the MIB international since I liked that we will follow new agents and Chris and Tessa are great but the script didn’t let them exploit their comedic side, specially Chris character, and Tessa’s character kinda fell into the “powerful woman” like capitan marvel and Mulan 2020 archetype like she was new but superior in every way to her incompetent male work partner, like putting men down to lift women when in reality isn’t inspiring at all not seeing those characters struggle to get better and train and all of that, they are just better than men cuz they a strong action woman trademark >:[

I never actually paused the movie to look at the list of celebrities that MIB indicates as being aliens in disguise before (2:10 in the TH-cam video), so I was doubled over with laughter when I saw George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Sylvester Stallone and Newt Gringrich on the list. XD
I loved the original MIB and I have fond memories of the animated series, MIB 2 was a disappointment, though it has a few good jokes. The third one is kind of weird, I wouldn't call it a great movie but I find it better than the second one (not to mention that it's one of the few movies where I think the dub actually makes it funnier). International was totally forgettable, Hemsworth and Thompson have great chemistry but I don't remember any single joke

The second movie doesn't "retcon" anything about the first, what are you on about? Yeah, they do undo some things, but nothing is retconned, it's all explained in the movie.
As for International, yeah, it wasn't very good. I love the Demobaza techwear that the alien twins wear though haha
Love the first, don't care about the second, and really enjoyed the third one. It was a great way to end the films. Didn't even watch the reboot.
Men In Black would do really well as a streaming show honestly.
A lot of great world building and lore to work with.

I rewatched 1 last night for the first time in a long time, and still loved it just as i did when i was a kid.
Rewatched 2 just a couple hours ago. It was enjoyable and entertaining, but really fells like its tripping itself constantly.
3 im going to rewatch tomorrow, and im most excited to rewatch this one because i havent seen it since its release. So im curious if ill enjoy it as much as i remember enjoying it then.
Eta: not rewatching international. Felt like i wasted 2 hours of my life when i left the theater and i dont want to do it again.
It was probably James Gunn’s decision that made MIB extinct… He reminds me of Thanos but in real life… 😎
Honestly I'm glad MIB: International wasn't trying to be the original MIB. That goes wrong so often, I was relieved when I watched the movie and it was more of a standalone thing.
How to do a sequel: Either subvert the audiences expectation T2 style. Or enhance the foundation already built Dark Knight style
My grandfather introduced me to this franchise a couple years ago.
I just feel like the reboot was too rooted in careful politics and they weren’t willing to take risks. The movie was a bust.
Which is funny, considering the first movie begins with a truckful of illegal aliens being allowed into the united states because Human politics are small potatoes compared to dealing with alien life on earth
