- Let's take a new look at the Post-Apocalyptic Open World game 'Mad Max'. Why wasn't it more popular? This project did so many things right and for some reason, disappeared and was never really talked about after. When I think of underrated gems, this comes in mind.

MathChief - The Best of Gaming! I remember the day I got that game brand new (not on the actual release date, but a few months after), along with JC3.
One of the things that impressed me most with the game is the atmosphere, it really felt like MAD MAX. Brutal, gritty and raw.

I like how at the end of the game Max was in exactly the same situation as he was at the start of the game despite everything that he'd done. Which shows that the developers understand Mad Max.

the only thing that stands out is the hand ta hand combat but its very fresh and legit, love it
I disagree completely it felt like a arcade game with extremely bland map design and repetitive gameplay it has almost no survival elements
I am so glad this video exists, Mad Max was an absolute blast for me. I had low expectations of it as a film tie-in. And it doesn't break any ground or reinvent the wheel. It's just an absolutely solid and FUN GAME. In fact, the last video game release I really remember enjoying.

the only great thing about it is the fighting system similar to warner the rest is just crap , you pass the entire game searching scraps, no upgrades like in RAGE one, no stories, nothing. It really could be a blast SSS game but was just a marketing time game after the movie. i keep telling games sucks nowadays specially about stories. assassins creed origins odyssey and WDead maybe an exception.

@ It was a fun game and the scale was smaller than other mainstream open-world games. Which was good. Had a good plot, the combat system was quite nice.

one of those games where playing and unlocking everything seems more like a must rather than a choice, a truly underrated masterpiece
The platinum for this game was a chore but I still very much enjoyed it.
Unfortunately when you do beat it, it gets really boring.
Felt really tedious after awhile it became mundane ,go clear camp move to castle help rebuild and repeat ,very slow progression on car upgrades in my opinion

This game came out at such an inconvenient time.
The year that brought us this game was also the year that brought us The Witcher 3, MGSV, Bloodborne, Fallout 4, Undertale, & Batman Arkham Knight. It got lost in the shuffle of it all in my opinion. Had it come out the year prior or even the year after, it probably would’ve been marketed better and even perceived as a GOTY contender.

I think it came out the same day as Fallout 4. I remember we joked that it was dead before it hit the ground, it is sad that I was right.
Also, people were having serious fatigue with the Arkham-style combat at the time which had exploded in popularity, for a while it seemed to be the standard for combat in games. At least, I know it put me off the game, even though I love Mad Max.
Exact same combat mechanic as the Batman Arkaham games. Which was boring as hell. The combat is basically a quick-time event. Lame. Lord of the Rings - Shadow of Mordor is also the same.
Fallout 4 is just Skyrim With Guns 2 and was casual console trash. Bloodborne ran at 11fps. It never ceased to surprise me how Gen Z got duped with repeated remade watered down trash and threw money it every chance they got, instead of games like Mad Max.
EASILY one of the most underrated games of this generation. Such a strong loveletter to the franchise. It could have been a movie cash in, but instead expands and improves the universe.

Good game but I found it really repetitive
I love the game but the ending was depressing and after you complete the game there is nothing to do really.
I think it was actually planned to be a movie cash in, but it was ultimately decided to get the game separated from the movie, that is why it has some story elements from the movie, but changes the stuff a bit and expands on it.
This was one of my favourite games when it released.
- Best drving/vehicle combat.
- Best explosions.
- Storms are amazing and otherworldly.
- The visual design is dark, gritty, and brutal, but also beautiful at times.
- Despite being a barren desert wasteland there's lots of variety.
- Lots of upgrades and customisation.
- Best skybox ever created.
- V8 sound.
- Combat.
I find myself in the same boat. Many games i am excited to finish and revel in that sense of accomplishment, but this game i just found myself sad that i was running out of things to do. I dont ever like games this much anymore 😭
The graphics and the art style is amazing for the time

First Last I agree with everything you said but I might add one more thing. Best hand to hand combat in a game ! At lest for me. It never got boring or repetitive and always felt satisfying. All the hits had weight behind them and felt deadly.
You forgot to mention the best skybox ever created. The whole game is just pure art. You can really lose yourself in the world while wandering around. Guess it's time to start a new playthrough.
They got the most important thing right : combat, both on foot and vehicular. That's like 90% of what you need to make a true Mad Max game and they pulled it off. I've played through it three times since it came out. I will play it again in the future, for sure. The only thing I didn't like were the boring minefield clearing tasks.
You should play rage 2 then that's a great game like this but FPS and very good fun

It's a cool detail that chum didn't know that the "longshot" was actually called a sniper rifle it's cool that max is pretty much the only person who remembers the old world

In the lore there are a few others out there that remember, from fury road for example Imortan Joe was from the Old World he also fought in the war to i believe and thats how he got all messed up was from the war if im not mistaken.
Massively underrated. This is what happens when game companies don’t pay off reviewers. Gems like this get overlooked.
It had pretty fair ratings. I couldn’t disagree with the good OR bad that was said about this game.
I think the main problem is there were so many other open world games that came out the same year. Also mgs 5 came out the same day so a lot of people didn't bother to give mad max a chance or just got busy with other games and forgot about it.

Mate the same multi-national conglomerates own the reviewers as well as the developers and publishers. Nobody pays anyone off, cos the owers are the same people, down the line.

Not forgotten. Avalanche did a amazing job with how they recreated the rough feeling of the desert. This game deserves further DLC's, expansions and proper Steam Workshop that would make this game alive for loads longer.
That was something I loved it showed how everyone moved on and adapted only max would have rather stayed in the past
I’ll never forget this game. It’s one of my all time favorites. Unfortunately, it released along side Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and was passed over by most gamers. Mad Max hasn’t left my hard drive since its release.

What I really really loved about this game is the sensation of progression. At the beginning, Max is wearing just a pair of boots, pants and a dirty shirt and drives a car that is barely a chair with and engine and four wheels. But at the end of the game you look like a true road warrior with a badass jacket and a beast car that would make any diesel fan get wet

I love that as well in a game. I enjoy to have to work to progress and not too fast like in most games!! A cool ad is the combat, so not just shoot everyone like most games
This comment has persuaded me to play this game. I love games with progression systems like that.
Although the progression was paced weirdly in the game. 30% into it Max was already upgraded to the Max (unintentional pun) and the car was an armored, spiky flame spewing death machine. Maybe if you rush only the main story it won't be a problem but for me the progression halted 1/3rd into the game. Amazing game otherwise.
This is actually one of the most underrated games of this decade imo. This is one of few games i enjoyed grinding, completed whole map. Also graphics were one of best at that time imo, amazing environment, amazing customization, good combat and decent story. Solid 9/10 from me.
Same here. I loved playing this game and had three separate playthroughs. My main criticism (which is basically just wishes for a sequel now) is to expand on gameplay and story. Seeing how the game was largely based on Fury Road, there’s still many more things that could’ve been included, like the massive convoys, fighting on top of trucks, motorcycles, etc. the story was decent enough, and while I do like Scrotus, I wish there was a bit more of him in the game. I hope there’s a sequel, or at least a new game in the future because there’s a lot of potential to make a game like this a phenomenon

Avalanche released 2 games that year and honestly just cause 3 is way better in terms of graphics. Note that mad max is still a solid game.

Those sandstorms were terrifying at times. Especially, when they catch you off guard. Great hidden gem of a game.

The sandstorms were like this awesome meta-existential threat that I don't think I've seen in many other games at all. Loved that aspect, had to flee to the car or shelter or you'd get done in by flying debris!
The cool thing also was the mechanic of also making it a minigame where you could get salvage out of it!

How they made a barren wasteland feel so atmospheric was amazing. It's very simple done perfectly, it's like Tomato basil and mozzarella in a game. Fun fun fun with a capitol fun

What I love the most about this game (apart from the story and long distance driving) is the physics, the way the physics in the game behaves the player can get really creative with shortcuts and doing badass stunts.
Literally took me 6 hours to think “maybe there is a map” because it was just such a joy to travel and explore the world.. when you dont have the gps you just dive into locations, and see whats up.

I was really impressed with how they made sections of a desert feel different and interesting. This is one of the best optimized games I have played on the pc.

For me, 144fps everything on ultra 1080p. No frame drops. No stutter. Smooth as butter. Such a well optimized game

This is one of those rare games where the grind doesnt feel repetitive.
I was left so divided about this. The layout and lore made the grind feel easy, but the mechanics made little progression throughout the game and after like an hour there's no new muscle controls to keep myself stimulated.

This game has some of the best looking sunsets, sunrises and overcasts. And the storms are really fun. Overall attention to detail and nailing the feel of the Mad Max movies was really impressive to me

Im playing this game now for the first time and I enjoy it a lot but some things are annoying like looking for barrels to destroy in base without mini map do you circle around wasting a lot of time...
Mad Max is an amazing game. I bought it last month & I'm impressed. The combat is fluid, intuitive, & loads of fun. The graphics are very good & the story gets you interested.
The world is dreary & harsh, yet enthralling at the same time. The gameplay is smooth & well done. And I like the in-game helps plus all the info you can read on everything just by navigating the UI.
Mad Max was released the same day as the much anticipated Metal Gear Solid 5 (MGS5). I've read that MGS5 came in & claimed the spotlight & stole Mad Max's thunder, pushing ad Max to the fringe where it was largely forgotten or ignored. Sad but true.
Replaying this game for like the 6th time right now. I'm always hunting for that perfect head-on collision with random enemies. The joy when you spot an enemy parked alongside the road and draw the perfect line and totally obliterate them!

This game was made without George Miller's approval or consent, it was made purely to make money/and so WB could keep the license, it retells the story of the comics but worse, and steals a bunch of Miller's ideas to the point where the game is just ideas instead of being a coherent story, and spoils plot points in early story ideas for movie sequels, but in spite of all that, it was great, but a sequel is not needed, the formula was perfected the 1st time round, and if they did it would be more disrespectful to Miller and his work...

I don't even know it exists either. I've seen the movie, but not the game. The movie is great, so does the game. Im glad i am searching around in steam and found this game there, purchase it and have great experience with it. But the control glitch in the game are still many to be notice even it is quiet old game. Except the last boss fight, it just not quiet that great tho, but the storyline, top notch i say...not a fan of good graphics and stuff, but i am more to storyline, which this game give you both great graphic and storyline..

This game was everywhere when the mad max movie came out, I remember wanting to get it only to end up forgetting about it.

I lucked out and got this game for $5 when I just got the new xbox, and hours and hours and hours of unbelievable fun gameplay later…100% completed and waiting for a sequel!!
One of the very few games I had most fun playing this entire gen, that never got the recognition it deserved. It's a bit of a sleeper hit now, but damn what a game. Great graphics, fun driving mechanics, crazy characters, fun and addictive combat and steady story. I truly loved this one.
I definitely didn't forget this game. It's been my favorite movie since I was a kid in the 80's and I bought this on PS4 at release and played 100's of hours of this beautiful perfect game. I hope a part 2 is released for PS5 eventually.
Man, thats so true. Also liked that movie... And game is great. They conveyed this atmosphere of the desert, survival and the end of the world so coolly as in the film. And when I "pressed the gas to the floor", rushing through the desert in the game, I just felt this insane rage like Mad Max. Maybe I even sat with such a stupid furious face behind the monitor))) No other game has had such emotions
I honestly didn't really know this existed, eventhough I'm a gamer at heart and try to play everything I like. This proves the poor marketing this might had gotten, but as a Mad Max fan since my childhood, thanks to this video I definitely want to play it. It looks gorgeous too. It is sold for me.

i think the thing this game absolutely nailed was the sound design. From the atmospheric ambient noises, to the meaty punches, and the sheer power you feel when using the shotgun is amazing
I just discovered this game a couple weeks ago and I fell in love with it! Really nice game!
It's was the first game that made me feel virtual fear. While playing,you're just praying for not getting onto one of these crazy road guys. Also,music is adding on tension,the combination between electronic and real instruments is amazing,same as in the furry road. If you love games about apocalypse, loneliness, madness and cars then this game is the right choice. Recommend it to everyone!

Such a great game. I didn’t even know it existed until I looked it up on the xbox store and was truly amazed! I’ve beaten a lot of open rpg games and this is definitely a gem that people either forgot or didn’t grab the audience’s attention. 10 out of 10 for me
its probably only game that i went complete 100% through, been everywhere seen everything killed everyone. Fighting system is just soo delicious, from sounds to MMA moves to overal animatiions and slowdown effects. Was enjoying them from the start to the end.

the combat was fun, but nowhere near as fun as the batman games'. at some point i even ran around without any armor because it was getting too easy. still, great game.
Same here. The other game I finished 100% was Shadow of Mordor. Different universe for sure, but ultimately a similar apocalyptic vibe. Games in those years had an appeal to me. They weren't so huge as to be impossible to finish 100%. You could really just enjoy the entirety of it before getting bored.

@@Johnny-zt6tq It is, though. The combat is obviously heavily inspired/taken from those games (same publisher, too). I think the combat in Mad Max was just as good, honestly, but you usually only had like 5 enemies, maximum, against you, which was way too easy and not as epic (I hate using that word but alas) as in the Batman series.
I absolutely loved this one. I got it for a buck in a humble bundle deal years ago.. started it but got sidetracked. I came back to it on my new PC last fall and was able to easily run it at 4K Ultra. It was a breath taking experience and I couldn't stop playing it till it was done and this was when Cyberpunk was out. Lol
Playing Days Gone at the moment and it reminded me a little of Mad Max: the survival, the vehicle customisation, the ripper-like cult people...
It wasn’t easy to 100% platinum Mad Max but looking back, its one that I’m pretty proud of.

i was so impressed when i play this game for the first time. my first thought was "WHY NOBODY TALK ABOUT THIS GAME?"
This is the only game that I didn’t immediately delete after finishing it, I wanted to start the thing all over again but finish the story with fewer upgrades in order to make it more challenging.
I love this game. Brutal, fun, and beautiful. The feeling of tearing ass through the wasteland in the V8 is incredible. Although the story was lacking they absolutely nailed the feeling of Mad Max.
I find myself going back to Mad Max every so often and it still holds up. Love it.
Will never forget this great experience because I periodically replay it.

I regret that I didn't play this game earlier like people completed it years ago. I have started playing it this year. Trust me, I am loving each and every moment of it. Its a shame that I never purchased mad max when it was released. I never realized how good and underrated this game was.
Brilliant game, the world was one of the best iv ever seen in a post apocalyptic setting, completed it 2 days ago, wish they would make another
So true... and for me this is the first game I ever 100%, despite playing games since the C64. The world was so compelling, I just could not bear to leave. The biggest flaw with this game is the way the character progression just stops after the first 2/3rds of the game - which is not uncommon but for some reason, the progression of abilities was so much fun I missed it when it was gone. Also as most of these games, its a bit too empty once finished. But these are flaws only because the gameplay loop was so much fun that one doesnt want it to stop.
I have to also say, the combat is the most fun I have ever seen. I remember at the start when it seems so hard and you are running from everyone. Then later once you both get the knack of it, and unlock some more abilities - it was just the best combat I have ever seen in a game.
Really need to get around to playing this, rolling around the desert in rusted-out Australian Muscle Cars sounds like a hell of a time!
I'm in the process of playing through this game again, I've played through this game twice in the past. It's just one of those type of games that you can easily start playing when you can't decide on what you want to play. Mad Max is just one of those games that is a total masterpiece.
I enjoyed playing the game, but i really don't have any memories of playing like i do with other games such as Far Cry 3 and Skyrim. It's a good and fun game, but it's not more than that.

Loved this game, go back every now and then. WB did a great job with it.
WB is just the publisher. Avalanche Studios made the game. Wich also made rage 2 together with ID software. Had high hopes for that since Doom+Madmax would make a awesome fps/car combat game, but it's shit compared to thoose games.
Indeed, Avalanche is a direct subsidiary of WB though, it's all the same really, solid title nonetheless..
@@anguswallace5548 no it's not same thing. look at Bethesda's Fallout 76 compared to id's Doom. Doom was also published by Bethesda, and the difference is shit and shinny brilliance. its possible that WB brought in some talent to help Avalanche, but you can't always place the developer and publisher on the same boat, calling the game a team accomplishment.
@ Subsidiary means owned by. WB literally owns the staff, computers, everything that Avalanche is made of.
Just like 2K owns Rockstar. When Rockstar release a game, 2K are effectively releasing a game under a different label.

This game is extremely underrated. I was recommended this game by a friend a few years back and recently just bought it. The atmosphere is top notch, the immersion is spot on, and the gameplay is really fun. It’s a shame that it hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves.

I ended up playing this game last year and found it one of my favorite games I played that year.
They did a really good job on the open world, how you traverse it, finding materials and having that incentive to get better at the game.
It was dark and broody but also fuckin' beautiful to look at.
This was literally the first game of this generation that i bought... for me, one of the best so far.
This game was great, and one of my favorite themes and movie series. THough it did get quite repetitive and kind of boring toward the 3rd act. But overall it was awesome

There’s something genuinely scary about being charged by the cars
It gets less scary after learning that you can shunt in their direction right as they're about to hit you and completely negate the impact damage. But your timing has to be exact.

reminds me of the chase in the beginning of No Country for old Men.
Just leave your car, dodge when opponent car is about to hit you, instantly turn back and fire shotgun at the back of enemy car (barrel). Boom!

I remember the hype surrounding the 'biggest map ever' with the idea that while the big nothing 'was' nothing, you could still go out into it. Reality is you quickly take damage and will die before getting far at all..... Still a good game, but hype is a plague to gamer emotions.

Criminally underrated game. One of my all-time favourites. The graphics, combat gameplay, cinematic, atmosphere etc. are just immersive
Its a shame this game didn't get more attention. It's absolutely fantastic. The world is incredibly well realized and absolutely gorgeous and the connection you have to your vehicle fits the Mad Max setting so well. I really hope we one day get a sequel because I easily dropped 60+ hours into this
