    In 1979, George Miller’s Mad Max introduced movie-going audiences to a post-apocalyptic anti-hero, the titular Mad Max, who went on to inspire generations of other morally ambiguous pop culture figures across multiple mediums of entertainment. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome hit theaters in 1985, marking the third entry in the wildly successful series. It unwittingly denoted the start of a decades-long drought, too, which wouldn’t end until Mad Max: Fury Road and Avalanche Studios’ Mad Max released in May and September of 2015, respectively.
    Though the open-world Avalanche game bore minimal relation to the fourth Mad Max film, the two projects shared a tumultuous production history. However, confusion abounds with regards to when exactly their paths crossed and later diverged. The sprawling Mad Max adventure that players ultimately installed on their PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One was not what George Miller initially had in mind upon pursuing a video game adaptation several years prior. Still, Avalanche Studios managed to produce an experience that honored the director’s seminal epics.
    The crew at Avalanche also carefully crafted a product that fans of its past open-worlds could appreciate, even if they harbored little to no nostalgia for the blockbuster film franchise. Accomplishing as much proved an arduous task; although, at the very least, the hard work went on to cement the licensed title as a cult classic worthy of its namesake.
    This is the history of Mad Max.

      Sleeping Dogs was amazing and the one complaint I have about it is the city itself. Once you start noticing all the things that don't work it feels like the city is a decor. What I mean by that is things like a big tall building that is flat with pipes and air conditioning on 2 sides and stores on the front and back. Not a single door that look like it could lead to the upper floors. The alley behind the bar has a lot of buildings and rooftops and all are impossible to reach from the regular map. After seeing the GTA4 and 5 maps that look like real cities from every angle it was a bit annoying once I started noticing the flaws of the Sleeping Dogs map. That said I still played through the entire game twice.

Just like with Just Cause to Just Cause 2, Arkham Asylum to City, or any other game franchise, the first game is a foundation that they can then build from. You forgot the fact that the devs stated that the game's open world was infinitely generated outside of the main map. You could drive out as far as possible until you lose gas or get bored. This was stated weeks from release and the game had nothing to show for it due to a storm that kills you pretty quickly outside of the maps bounds. Players figured out a way to break past the storm and the map does go on for a REALLY long time. But it clearly looks unfinished and was probably scrapped even though it was touted as a feature really close to release.

    In my experience, I didn't care about building the Magnus Opus. I just bought what was the strongest or better, didn't care about the stats. However, what I did love about the game was the world. It looked so beautiful, and each post-apocalyptic structure was handcrafted and gorgeous. Also the factions were interesting.

  • @KotCR
    @KotCR 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Game was alright. Competent enough. I've played a bit but have yet to get round to finishing it. Game had alot of cool ideas and executes some of them well (others, not so much). But it does really suffer from that repetitive and "been there done that before" feeling that many of these more generic open world games that released around the same time had; Very much seems like that Farcry syndrome where once you've played one of them you feel like you've played them all, and you ultimately get to the point where you wonder what you are doing still playing the game when you could be playing something a bit more...unique or inspiring.
    For me, personally, I think the drab blasted wasteland setting doesn't help...dirt dunes as far as the eye can see...even though I realise it's appropriate for the setting, other games based in the same sort of environment, such as Fallout 3, managed to find ways to mix up the environmental visuals a bit. I feel that variety in gameplay environments is really important to keep people more invested in a game. It's always better to be playing a game and be wondering or excited to see where you end up next, rather than just realising no matter where you go in the story, it's all going to kind of look the same - it can ruin your drive to progress.

    The main thing that bothers me to no end in Mad Max's criticism, is that the same people who call it repetitive and say it has a bland open world, always line up to buy the next Ubisoft title. Double standards, everyone.

  • @whatisbestinlife8112

    A great, satisfying game.
    I really wish there had been an "open road" mode for after the narrative ended. Something where you can drive endless, procedural generated roads out into the wasteland. With occasional small locations that you come upon where you stop to investigate and scavenge for food, scrap, ammo and, of course, fuel. And with occasional spawns of roving vehicle bands that you engage with in the car combat.
    Basically something that uses all the existing mechanics with some procedural generation for the long roads between locations and actual need to scavenge fuel to hopefully make it a bit further.

    The fourth Mad Max movie had three different games that were in development to tie into it, during its production. That's why there are certain scenes in the movie that seem disjointed and out of place period since those are supposed to be answered in one of the three games.

  • @Exiled_Rouge

    I think this game is a masterpiece of the modern era. It executes every aspect of gameplay perfectly; which is to say every action is a concise metaphor. The method and nature of video game consumption and coverage I think is largely not very good- to put it mildly.
    There is not yet the language & sophistication in philosophy and critique around games to the degree of cinema or music, for example. This causes a lot of incorrect notions about gameplay and the action of gameplay.
    Few games are as marred contemporaneously as Mad Max. Vanquish and Fallout Tactics are two others. And it is 100% due to audience of video games in general not having a lot of sophistication.

    This game had that misfortune that it came out in 2015. Year which is considered to be one of the most contested in terms of gaming lineup: Mad Max, Witcher and MGS 5 The Phantom Pain. This is a very underrated game, there is no doubt about it, however it is a victim of hard circumstances.
    Details are impeccable, particularly when flame is coming out from the exhaust, alas, not many Z generation kids take that to heart.
    Sometimes it takes years before this type of game is considered "cult", Spec Ops the Line is one such example.

    • @Mac10Demarco
      @Mac10Demarco 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The game was pretty fun but that’s about it lol. I don’t think it would stand out at all if it came out in a year that had a weaker line up. The game play is repetitive, the writing is pretty bland and the driving wasn’t that great at all. Fun game for sure, but definitely not a victim of hard circumstances lol.
      On another note, you had games like Arkham Knight, Until Dawn, Bloodborne, Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Dying Light, R6: Siege, Pillars of Eternity and Undertale.
      I think it was more on par with Assassins Creed Syndicate or a little bit better. I still had a good time with the game for about 8 hours though.
