If you visit Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, Timor, and Papua and see the differences among these people, you'll be amazed that we are united as one nation. Lately, I have just realized, that it would be easier for us to learn the history and cultures of other countries like Japan and Korea than of each of the ethnicity, tribe, and languages composing Indonesia. One small province like North Sulawesi has five "indigenous" ethnic groups (not including the Chinese, Javanese, Balinese, Moluccas living there for decades or ages) and five languages and at least 15 dialects. It is almost the similar case of North Sumatera. I am completely blind of the languages of Papuan people, other than the lyrics of some songs I know. The diversities of Indonesia are just too many and each component is so unique. Unity in diversity is the dream of the founders of the country and it is the greatest tasks of each of us (today) to always live in harmony despite those differences.

As a Papuan and Indonesian native speaker, I might say, Bahasa Indonesia has more influence from western languages, Dutch yes we have thousands of words from the Netherlands as a former colony, but also English, Portuguese, Spanish. As an addition, we have also from Hindi, Arabic, Tagalog and some similar words from Urdu, Russian, Afrikaans, and there might be some languages that i don't recognize. These all based on my research on the internet and youtube.
It's like Indonesia is the melting pot of every cultures the world's have, I mean Dutch and Portuguese influence is obvious as we can see from the building and stuff. There's also Indian influence since Indonesia was once predominantly Hindu and so on.

Love Indonesia🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩 from India🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳. U r only muslim majority country who like ancient traditions and proud of following them. Indian Muslims must learn from this. And I have a question from u:- Did Ramayana and Mahabharata taught in Indonesia or not?
We did learn them, most of us know about them, but our version kinda twist it a little bit, likechanging names, adding few characters like the four shadow puppets at 11:58 those 4 are punakawan, in mahabharata they act like a teacher/counselor for Pandava, and i'm being serious, the big one on the right, his fart can kill an entire army apparently.

One thing to mention - The word Indonesia come from Sanskrit Word which means 'Indian Islands'. It's because of a long historical relationship with India and Hindu Kings and Portugize Confusion. Love from India.🇮🇳🇮🇩
Yups... Indonesia actually consist of: 1) Greater Sunda Islands (Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi) 2) Lesser Sunda Islands (Bali, Nusa Tenggara) 3) Sahul (Maluku, Papua) For neutrality, we choose Indonesia as the name of our country or we called it Bumi Pertiwi because there is a tribe named Sunda...
The word Indonesia comes entirely from Greek, even though yea Indo- is from Sanskrit, means India, but it's borrowed into Greek first. -nesia is native Greek, from the base word "nesos", which means "island". You're correct, Indonesia literally means Indian Archipelago.
Btw Indonesia is not india but indonesia is indonesia,I'm sorry if I suddenly spoke like that because most Japanese people say that Indonesia is an indian country

Great job covering a very dynamic and complex country. Indonesia being a diverse country is an understatement. Just to correct a couple things that might have got a couple Indonesian's triggered is that there are actually a lot more than 300 ethnic groups and languages within the country. In my anthropology class at uni (James Cook University) we had a guest speaker give us the most researched and updated facts that Indonesia had actually overtaken PNG as the most linguistically diverse country in the world with closer to 900 languages! Yes sounds crazy, but if you travel in and around East Indonesia you would realise that this figure is not too far fetched. Another interesting fact that Barby gave that was false is that Indonesia actually has a lot more than just 1 kingdom within the country that operates on an autonomous level rather than just Yogyakarta. The two most famous being the kingdom of Ternate and Tidore, both in North Maluku province, East Indonesia. Anyways, just thought I'd show some love to this amazing nation by clearing up some facts.
yes we still have a lot of fully functioning kingdoms here (est around 234)...not just Ternate and Tidore. In North Maluku alone we have 4 active kingdoms: Kingdom of Ternate, Kingdom of Tidore, Kingdom of Bacan, and Kingdom of Jailolo. Whats make Sultanate of Yogyakarta difference is that they still "own" the land and the people, and it is guaranteed by our national law. So basically Sultan of Yogyakarta is automatically become the Governor of Yoyga and Prince Pakualam (head of Pakualaman Principality) as Vice Governor. Where as for other sultan or kings, you have to compete in election. The other difference is any unincorporated land in Yogyakarta is owned by the sultan, except for national park.
Irga abd thankyou for you reply! Ah yes the two kingdoms on Halmahera. I was wondering what the differences were between jogja kingdoms and the ones in Maluku and Maluku Utara. It is amazing how each individual kingdom has its own unique independent history from the rest of the archipelago. Im currently writing my thesis on the transmigration of Suku Sawai and Suku Togutil peoples in North and Central Maluku, extremely fascinating province.

first of all, sorry for my rusty english, im american and i was born on hawaii (only born there, not a hawaiian native) my father is american ( Florida ) and my mother is indonesian ( shes from cilacap ), and i have no idea how they met each other lol, my parent raised me on hawaii for 2 year and then we moved to indonesia because of some family problem, my father left us when we were still a little kid (im a twin) and my mother took us to indonesia. we moved alot during a couple years, start from jakarta - central java - Sukabumi then bandung, i cant speak english at all until age 14, i can only speak indonesia, but my american family always keep in touch with us, i realy wanted to talk to them, so i learn english by my self (10 yr old ), its kinda funny but i learn english mostly by playing games world of warcraft, there are alot of native english speaker there, and they are great teacher. it is true that the best teacher is the native speaker it self, because in this game, you cant realy do anything if you cant communicate, 2 years of playing the game and im able to speak english, it sounds like a joke but, it is a win win condition for me, i got the fun and i can speak english, now i can speak sundanese, english and indonesia, im a muslim and most of my family are christian and jews, but we live in harmony Edit : if you have personal question you can dm me @jasonfebs I dont know my comment would be getting this much attention, thankyouu

As an Indonesian, I really applaud you for this well-researched video that included details that many foreigners don't typically know. You mentioned in the video that despite being a huge Muslim majority country, there are a lot of Indonesian Muslim woman who doesn't wear hijab, and I really want to emphasize on this (because I'm also an Indonesian Muslim who is still learning to wear hijab). Many people from other countries, especially from the west, on the internet often think (at least from my observation) that so many Indonesian Muslim woman wear hijab because we are oppressed by our religion. We. Do. Not. Those who wear it, do it because they want to, otherwise they don't. I live in a city in East Java where the population is predominantly Muslim and far more obeying to the religion than those who lives in metropolitan cities such as Jakarta, and even in here no one bats an eye to a Muslim woman who doesn't wear the hijab. And that is the case for nearly all of Indonesia except for Aceh. Yet I see so many foreigner including Indonesian women for example when talking about "being oppressed by religion". It's so tiring because they don't know what they're talking about. I bet they have never met an Indonesian their whole lives.
Acehnese stepping by here. What you're said was true as is was generally common in Indonesia, but for Aceh, it's special case. After Sharia Law was introduce in 2003, all of Acehnese women were mandated to use hijab for protected them from men who kind of sometimes looking them with sneaky eyes (as you can guess it could lead to bad things). This rules however does not apply to the Hakka Chinese community and noticeable yet small Tamil community that live in Aceh for a long time and people from outside Aceh that visited this place, nonetheless they're advised to wear polite clothing as the hijab is optional for them if they want to use it or not
@@TripleS24Squad optional itu untuk siapa? Muslim kea atau yg lain? Aku tak nampak pun org aceh kena paksa pakai hijab. Tak pernah dgr dr org indo. Betul kea? Macam mana kalau nak tukar agama? Senang atau tak?

U right dude

It's like Indonesia is the melting pot of every cultures the world's have, I mean Dutch and Portuguese influence is obvious as we can see from the building and stuff. There's also Indian influence since Indonesia was once predominantly Hindu and so on.

One thing to mention - The word Indonesia come from Sanskrit Word which means 'Indian Islands'. It's because of a long historical relationship with India and Hindu Kings and Portugize Confusion. Love from India.🇮🇳🇮🇩
Yups... Indonesia actually consist of:
1) Greater Sunda Islands (Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi)
2) Lesser Sunda Islands (Bali, Nusa Tenggara)
3) Sahul (Maluku, Papua)
For neutrality, we choose Indonesia as the name of our country or we called it Bumi Pertiwi because there is a tribe named Sunda...
The word Indonesia comes entirely from Greek, even though yea Indo- is from Sanskrit, means India, but it's borrowed into Greek first. -nesia is native Greek, from the base word "nesos", which means "island". You're correct, Indonesia literally means Indian Archipelago.
not "Indian" as a "India" (country), but like "Indian" tribe (native America). which mean MONGOLIA race

Come to my country
Indian are good too❤️❤️
Great job covering a very dynamic and complex country.
The other difference is any unincorporated land in Yogyakarta is owned by the sultan, except for national park.
liverpool6058 Nice. It is rare to actually see an educated person in the comment section. Terima kasih. Salam dari Jakarta, Indonesia.
Im currently writing my thesis on the transmigration of Suku Sawai and Suku Togutil peoples in North and Central Maluku, extremely fascinating province.

we moved alot during a couple years, start from jakarta - central java - Sukabumi then bandung, i cant speak english at all until age 14, i can only speak indonesia, but my american family always keep in touch with us, i realy wanted to talk to them, so i learn english by my self (10 yr old ), its kinda funny but i learn english mostly by playing games world of warcraft, there are alot of native english speaker there, and they are great teacher.
it is true that the best teacher is the native speaker it self, because in this game, you cant realy do anything if you cant communicate, 2 years of playing the game and im able to speak english, it sounds like a joke but, it is a win win condition for me, i got the fun and i can speak english, now i can speak sundanese, english and indonesia, im a muslim and most of my family are christian and jews, but we live in harmony

As a Dutchman i was amazed with the videos you guys shared with us during the Euro Cup. Watching hundreds of people driving trough the streets dressed up in orange and waving Dutch flags to support our national team was very odd to see. Knowing that we have colonized the country for many years and yet receive so much love is proof that our new relationship is working very well. May Indonesia have a great future and that our relations strenghten even more.
Lot's of love from the Netherlands🇳🇱🇮🇩
For me personally, i don't see the past because we are in the present, not the past. So don't think we hate you, because we really appreciate Netherlands because Netherlands is like a cousin to Indonesia, so we are a family and if you want to come to Indonesia we will be Glad because you have come to our country/family
Love from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Sir, it happened in my city AMBON located in the east of Indonesia. There are so many supporters of The Netherland National Football Team here. They love Netherland because as we know, also there are so many Ambon citizens who live in Netherland since years ago. Regards from Ambon, Maluku, Indonesia
Hello bro love from VOC - Dutch East Indies
Well, the past dosen't matter
Thank thank you my friend from Dutchland love from Indonesia
Very very detailed (impressed golf clap)
I mean Indonesian People kinda like turkey people they're Muslim but yea also have origin culture that mix into religion
This rules however does not apply to the Hakka Chinese community and noticeable yet small Tamil community that live in Aceh for a long time and people from outside Aceh that visited this place, nonetheless they're advised to wear polite clothing as the hijab is optional for them if they want to use it or not
🙏🙏🙏
@@TripleS24Squad optional itu untuk siapa? Muslim kea atau yg lain? Aku tak nampak pun org aceh kena paksa pakai hijab. Tak pernah dgr dr org indo. Betul kea? Macam mana kalau nak tukar agama? Senang atau tak?
