I have a 2018 7.5 GTI, bought new, manual transmission with 45k, and I haven't had a single problem with it. It does stay in a garage and I drive it easy, probably has to do with my age. I love this car, plan to keep it, and think VW nailed it with this car.
@@Wolf-Law77 im planning on getting a 2013 VW golf like the one in the video. it's got 21,000 miles and is a Japanese import, absolutely no rust at all, had test drive in it and is smooth like butter. im upgrading from a vauxhall corsa with a 2007 plate which is on 130,000 miles and ive had it for 5 years since i was 19. not a single scratch on it, the protective cover on the doors and bodywork is coming off along with the paint, its that old XD I plan on taking it easy with the car as i would rather get where im going safely, plus keeps the car in decent shape.

My GTI 7,5 2018 is the best car I bought. I have had one hundred different cars before like Swedish American German French . Only got new battery after about three years. Its a keeper. Setts are comfy. Car is roomy. Luggage too. Cheap on gas actually 😊
I bought a 2015 SE GTI 3 months ago. I’ve put 7k miles on it already (it’s my daily as you can see). No issues besides the squealing noise from when I have the heat on (probably blower motor as you mentioned). I’m at 62k miles and I love the car! Awesome video as well, lots of great info!
Oil leaks are pretty common IMO. Camshaft Adjuster magnet and the Upper Timing Chain cover are the usual suspects, but you can buy replacement gaskets for pretty cheap it's just hard to get any tools in this area as there is not much space. I would recommend anyone stick there head in and under the vehicle for any oil leak residue near the left side of engine.
Water leaking through the rear speakers is very common with all Mk7 Golfs. You can re-seal them yourself but a dealer will replace the speakers if it's still under warranty. I've also had the 5F infotainment unit in the glovebox fail on me. Fortunately replaced under extended warranty but it would have cost me £2,300 out of pocket.
I have a 2018 GTI 7.5 manual from new. Love it and do not plan on selling any time soon. My faults are 1. Occasional radio head unit blacks out. Seems to be a common fault with other GTI's. 2. Fade red trim in head lights (could be Australian sun). 3. Noise in roof (sunroof) very faint, however. 4. Seats at seams have minor tear/rip. Even in rear where no one sits. Only once per week do I fold back seats down. I only have 60,000 km and am gentle getting in and out. But I love the car. All else good.
I’ve never had an HU issue in my 2017 MK7, nor do my seats tear 🤷♂️. MK7’s were the true pinnacle. Nothing different on the MK7.5’s except higher prices and aesthetic changes lol
I’d get the bonnet release junction box zip tied in case that opens up and you’re unable to lift the bonnet/hood up. Seems to be a common issue on these mk7s.
As with every review I have see discussing the MK 7.5 GTI (which I own one in Canada) , they all fail ro mention that you can easily fully defeat traction control on the MK 7, but sadly not on the MK 7.5. I would know, I suffered the disappointment tuning mine stage one and then one plus only to be hamstrung by the godawful highly intrusive traction/stability control. I thought if I just waited another year someone would Crack it......but that never, and has never, happened. My 4 year lease ended and I only had a 18350 buyout price, and knowledge they were selling my 2018 model used on the lot for 33-34k, so buying it was a no-brainer. I bought it and decided I would stage two it ro see if the extra power might somehow overwhelm the anti-fun controls, and, it did make quite a difference. But I must admit I did stage two exu and tcu tunes. So, now you know why you see no-one posting MK 7.5 GTI dragsteip times as fast as MK 7 ones. It's the undefeated traction and stability control. Unfortunately things things happen and may never be resolved, but you can have a really quick car that will run about 13 seconds in the quarter mile. And you'll have no problems roll-racing people who runs 12. Had to say this because most people whom buy a used GTI mode it.
Great video! "Cracked mounting bracket on door speaker" - I will say that I have also seen many with no cracks and just bad speaker seal. The seal is known to go bad and cause this leak. Had to replace both of mine and re-seal.
Noticed the clutch “just” handles the power……and sometimes doesn’t even do that if you’re really horsing it on. But apart from that….the car is perfect. Only issue so far was driver side window stopped working……was the spring in the button on the master window controller……got one for W tenner, fitted myself in half an hour, apart from that, these golds seem bulletproof, just change the oil religiously every 8-10 thousand miles along with filter and it’ll last a lifetime

I recently bought a 2018 Mk7.5 manual GTI 4 door with only 21000km. Final year with the manual option. It has the infotainment pack, I'm not sure if that was standard in Australia. Good thing is that it has dual direct and port fuel injection. I think port injection was deleted in the 2019 year. A manual 7.5 with port injection and later production turbo is in something of a sweet spot. Engine is turbine-smooth, returns 16km/l, 45mpg on the highway. Without the safety pack, I didn't get adaptive cruise, but adaptive seems to displace the speed limit function, which I do use now and then. With the light clutch, smooth shifting and turbo torque this car is very enjoyable to drive. I'm certainly going to change the engine oil every 6 months, not leave it to 15000km as VW recommends. Had mine 2 years and put 13k miles on it and it's been a great car other than having the drivers door latch replaced as the auto door lock didn't know if it was open or locked and kept clunking, replaced under warranty 👍🏼

I have just brought one, I’ve always drove manuals and I find the GTI performance a bit difficult to move up in gears smoothly, mainly 1st to second and 2nd to 3rd, I don’t know if I’m coming off the clutch too quickly but never had this issue before - do you have any advice ?

I have my 3rd GTI, a 2021 Mk 7.5 which has just 17,000 kilometres at this point. Only problem with this car is the infotainment system, can't access the G-Metre and other performance bits in the system and as well sometimes it just dies, no radio or anything. At the dealer this never shows up but is a small gripe. Although a many times repeat VW owner I never recommend them to friends as one followed my advice in 2015 and has spent $3,800 on water pump and other issues, there is a class action suite happening in Canada to try and help the 2015 owners but has yet to be resolved. I was waiting for the Mk8 but when they came out I listened to the many critiques and do not like the body changes. Mine is one of the last '21s in Cornflower Blue and unless the Mk 9 is much improved will be keeping this one.
I had 2010 gti I tuned it at 40k miles drove it to 180k miles before I sold it. Only issue I had was replacing the manual gearbox. That was my fault because I didn’t want to replace the seal on time 😅
Bought my 21 GTI in 2021 with 4 miles on it. I now have over 57k miles. Stage 1 ECU and DSG tuned since 25k. I've had some very minor issues. Every now and then I'll get an error door contact switch and I can't roll down the windows. Have to shuf the car off and open the door to fix the fault.
I'm still weighing my options right now. (It's between a mk7/7.5 GTI or a Mk6 R). These seem like they aren't as much of a headache so they're looking really appealing right now. Even though I'd be getting it as a daily and the DCT makes more sense in every way on paper, I know I want the manual MQ250 so I guess I'll need a clutch if I get one lol! But I gotta keep building my t-chart before I come to a conclusion 😂. This was super helpful for compiling info though! It seems you guys suggest that I should be looking for an example built after 2017 due to the recall, and turbo issue if I want my search to be easier.
@@themilesdriven Yeah the more research I do the more I agree with you. While the mk6 R would give me AWD, It seems VW fixed lots of issues between the generations so I'd be much better off with the mk7 GTI
Got my 2019 with 10k miles. Love it to bits..had to use it for work and put 50k miles on it already... its started to have a squeak here n there this week. Had a baby and its not as roomy as i'd hoped. I dont want to pile on the miles, need something more spacious for the car seat etc and want a motorway mile muncher. Can i afford 3 cars??
Still not sure exactly how common the issues are - I do a lot of miles (near 20k a year) and am looking at a 19 plate with 40k. Debating whether to get one or buy something lower power/ more sensible
If it helps, a problem considered common enough reporting is 0.5% of production total, or sometimes less, I try to follow the 0.5% rule on the channel the same as when I was in automotive media. So it’s good to know what to look for but don’t assume you’ll have the issues, just know what to check 👍 Also I had a GTI for a year a while back, enjoyed owning it, but it did cost me a bit more in maintenance than I expected
I’m the original owner of a 2017 GTI S 6spd. It’s had it’s fair share of issues (biggest were two blown turbos, waterpump, and 4 clutch jobs), BUT, I have had it Stage 2 tuned and higher (IS38 w/meth currently) since it’s had 2k miles on the ODO. It currently has 151,751 miles on the ODO. I’ve never had engine issues. I’ve had random codes for misfires, O2 sensor, MAP sensors, etc. pop up, and I’ve fixed them all, and I’ve also completed 5 valve cleanings myself, so the car hasn’t been in-problematic by any means, BUT then again, my car has been running double the amount of power it comes from the factory, since basically brand new. If I didn’t modify this car, I would assume all of the issues I’ve had, would never have come to be, outside of the waterpump and regular services like valve cleanings, spark plugs and coils, etc. I recently buff cut and polished my GTI, using an orbital (took me about 22hrs of work time), and it came out so good! The paint has never looked as good as it does right now, not even when I bought it new! It really has made me fall in love with the cars design all over again! The MK7/7.5 GTI/R is a great platform. Relatively cheap on the used market, reliable, economical, and a great tuning platform. Parts are a bit more expensive than your average Honda or Toyota, but the quality is really nice to live with. I still get 28city/400hwy mpg’s, even with my IS38 and many modifications! Greta car, great look all around.
Just bought an MK7 6MT and doing bunch of research. V much LOVE the car but i heard there are cases of crank walk more common in the 6MT than DSG. Is this something that you possibly didn't list since they are not common whatsoever?
Congrats on the new car 😎 yes it just wasn’t reported enough for me to put it as a ‘common’ fault. It’s tough, but every video I have to walk the line between letting you know what to look out for, but not over reporting problems so they seem more common than they are. When cars fail, the people affected get very loud online, and not many give a detailed breakdown of their ownership, including if they missed services, modifications, quality of oil used ect making it tough to be fair to the car and make sure I’m giving enough information without making a car seem way worse than it really is 👍
@@alvor2762 I ended up with a 3 door manual non PP, no DCC but overall great car. I simply couldn't find an affordable performance pack car where I was like 4-5k more than what I paid for mine

Stupidky sold it as retired thought better update, a mistake but the Mk 7 gti pp had for ten yrs onky issue water pump at 16 k weeping had it done,NS doirvhabdke comes adrift i put it back but don’t trust it or VW dealer so going to see my porsche guy.

I would put a different trans fluid in it first. Then I would get yourself a short shift kit. Start from there, and then start adding other things like a weighted shift knob. But the new gearbox oil should help your shifting issues quite a bit. I use Redline MT-LV Transmission Fluid. Best stuff for the MK7
The revs hang between first and second really bad resulting in rarely getting a smooth shift. You can't really even tune out the rev hang but there's some work arounds. 1. Having A/C on makes the revs drop faster between shifts, allowing you to shift faster like in older cars without rev hang. 2. Short shift kit & weighted knob helps i bit imo. 3. The biggest difference I had was with the dogbone insert and pendulum motor mount. The stock mounts really let the engine rock front and back when you shift causing a shift shock like rebound effect, that and the rev hang makes it really hard to shift smooth. The mount and insert really tighten the drivetrain up and was the biggest improvement by far. I hated the way the car shifted and was at my wits end so i hope this helps.
I was thinking of putting it in, but there was so many mixed reports (poor maintenance or modified engines causing DSG problems) it seemed better not to call it a common issue. But I think it is a good thing you've mentioned it as only time will tell how reliable it is 👍
Still don’t understand why they dropped tye 3 door for the us market, instead of keeping it as an option. Gti is and always has been a 3 door car. 4 doors were always reserved for base non gti golf’s. If you want a 4 door then don’t get a gti lol. It’s like saying you want a corvette but request a 4 door crossover for a corvette lmao
From being in both you will likely get the same experience in a MK7.5 Clubsport S. VW did such a good job with the 7.5 that many owners are holding on to them 👍
I’m looking into a 2018 golf gti manual, what are some problems that these cars have and how’s the reliability hold up on this car is it worth buying, I’m going to be driving far for college and I need to make sure it can handle daily long drives
Unfortunately VW made it a bit difficult with the MK7 Golf for differentiation. Some markets quote model year, so a 2018 production is a 2019 MY, so that could be one reason, another is where you are in the world, in the UK and Germany for example you could get the facelift from later 2017. Another issue is that VW introduced emission particulate filters in 2018 (along with all manufacturers) in markets that required them (Europe for example). Lastly VW made some later minor changes to 20/21 models. All this means the definition of a MK7.5 becomes blurred around the world. We have simplified it to how VW have always worked. A MK7 is prior to facelift (this is LED rear lights without zip style indicators and front squared LED daytime lights rather than a continual line across the bottom of the lens). Even this is contentious as in the USA for example the zip style rear indicators were optional or offered in higher specification whereas in Europe even a base GTI has them. Sorry for the long explanation but hope it helps clear things up a bit 👍
@@themilesdriven Thanks. Thats such an articulate response. I recently bought a used 2019 GTI Autobahn Automatic with 67,000km on it for an eye gouging $34k CAD. Dealerships are so shameless these days. Yet I bought it coz the car was very well maintained (looked almost new when i test drove it), also it was of the right colour (platinum grey) and because I don’t like the direction and styling of the MK8.
In the market for a mk7, one currently for sale near me in my budget. My issue/worry is that it has a sunroof and have read a lot about the sunroof leaking or creaking… Not sure if I should take the risk or wait for one with no sunroof to come on the market. Live in UK if that helps

Great to here it helped and choosing between those three is a great dilemma to have, I think we would pick the MK7.5 GTI out of the options 😁
So it’s good to know what to look for but don’t assume you’ll have the issues, just know what to check 👍
Also I had a GTI for a year a while back, enjoyed owning it, but it did cost me a bit more in maintenance than I expected
i've put 207,000 km on my 2015 GTI, only issue to date was a leaking water pump
How much oil did it consume? Was it stock?
When cars fail, the people affected get very loud online, and not many give a detailed breakdown of their ownership, including if they missed services, modifications, quality of oil used ect making it tough to be fair to the car and make sure I’m giving enough information without making a car seem way worse than it really is 👍
Great video! Thinking if getting one in the new year!
Awesome. All the best with your purchase 😁
Buy the 7.5 performance with 7 speed DSG and DCC. You wont regret it. This is my 4th MK7
@@alvor2762 I ended up with a 3 door manual non PP, no DCC but overall great car. I simply couldn't find an affordable performance pack car where I was like 4-5k more than what I paid for mine
I use premium fuel and additive, same with my 944 turbo which i had for 18 years with no injector issues or anything actually, was the workds best car for me.
I have just brought one, I’ve always drove manuals and I find the GTI performance a bit difficult to move up in gears smoothly, mainly 1st to second and 2nd to 3rd, I don’t know if I’m coming off the clutch too quickly but never had this issue before - do you have any advice ?
usually they need to be warmed up to operate well. But double clutching from 1st to 2nd might help
I hated the way the car shifted and was at my wits end so i hope this helps.
mk5 doesnt have sunroof but mk 6,7,7.5 does. options around that.
are you saying your mk5 doesn't have a sunroof, or they didn't have the option?
I think you might have missed the DSG issue. Some people have been complaining about it or are they just the unlicky 1% to come across it?
I was thinking of putting it in, but there was so many mixed reports (poor maintenance or modified engines causing DSG problems) it seemed better not to call it a common issue. But I think it is a good thing you've mentioned it as only time will tell how reliable it is 👍
@@themilesdriven Thanks for the clearity champ. 🤍
100% agree, 3dr hot hatch is missed everywhere 👍
Maybe u should have included the GTD in this video which has similar issues but some issues that the GTi doesn't have 👍
Looking at a used 2018 S GTI certified with 30k miles. Wanted the 2022 but price is too high.
From being in both you will likely get the same experience in a MK7.5 Clubsport S. VW did such a good job with the 7.5 that many owners are holding on to them 👍
Yeah I thought about selling my 2021 S but just can’t let it go.
@@themilesdriven MK7.5’s drive exactly the same as MK7’s. People just like the 7.5 exterior styling a tad more, specifically the front bumper…
@@JacesOwnWorld yes, the mk7 looks like a cheap base model compared to the mk7.5
I’m looking into a 2018 golf gti manual, what are some problems that these cars have and how’s the reliability hold up on this car is it worth buying, I’m going to be driving far for college and I need to make sure it can handle daily long drives
Okay so 2017 and below are MK7 whereas 2018 and above are MK7.5?
Why are some ppl saying that the 2019/2021 version is the actual MK7.5?
Personally I avoided the sunroof version as nice as it was, just think it may pose an issue down the line.
4 years on and no sunroof issues.
Thoughts on buying a 2016 with 115k miles?
Gti mk 7.5 means 2019 manufacturing year??
The Mk7.5 started production in late 2017, but for some countries 2018 is the first year of the 7.5. If you look at a 2019 it will be a mk7.5 yes 👍
@@themilesdrivencan you tell me till when it was made? And what exact year would you recommend for more reliable GTI?
Across the MK7/7.5 range reliability is similar, but 2018 production onwards will have any revisions to maximize reliability 👍
Common GTD DSG issues?
47 mpg?
I have had well over 50mpg on a steady run. 2015 220ps gti.
Well... I think I might just get a V6 Accord then
Boring cars like an Accord don’t need much maintenance because they’re boring.
@Jace’s Own World Have you driven a V6 Accord? They are GLORIOUS my guy. More torque than a GTI and sounds 3x better.
@@JacesOwnWorldless time in the garage = more time on the road
Don't buy them the mk8 is trash with that interior and the mk8/7.5 is being sold for at or above original msrp
This is a guide for the Mk7 and Mk7.5 GTI, not the MK8 👍
