There was a time when this song was everything to me. After overcoming that phase I believed that my life won't take me to that place again. But, now I have understood that this phase is never-ending and this comes in a loop with different features every time. But, this song is just a gem to me. Cheers, to life.
Believe me life is just an illusion. Believe what you see. Life is a person you should look at yourself and see into yourself and BELIEVE that LIFE is the beginning not the end.
OMG I love this song and without really thinking about the meaning until I read the different problems others suffered , hope you're all okay and let's all drink to each other
I myself have covered this song countless times in the last few years, partly in an attempt to bring back the memories of when at my first college party I sort of danced on this great song in September 1967. When I watch this video, I genuinely feel the atmosphere of back then. Very well done, Jack!!
They had a lot of hits for being underrated. Queen didn't get half the attention before live aid. I know lots of people that hadn't heard of them until then
In fact „Death of a clown“ is an exception: written and played as well as produced by Dave, at that time he was very happy to have a good song without his brother
I find a beautiful allure to this song considering it was jokingly suggested to a friend (who was a full blown alcoholic) that he'd find it ironically hilarious to be played at his funeral. Less than a year later the alcohol killed him and couldn't help but smile when he had chosen this as his final song as he was cremated in his cardboard coffin. Dude was a legend til the end.
How many of you Silver Surfers remember this tribute to Stan Laurel? Great song! Remember listening to this in 1966, driving around 18 years old, in my Ford Consul with my pals. Great times!
Thanks Joe for letting me know that "Death Of A Clown" was a tribute to Stan Laurel who died in 1965. I have every Kinks album and many rare songs. Laurel and Hardy are one of the great comedians / comedic duos of all time. To me the best. As Stan said before he died. "If any of you cry at my funeral I'll never talk to you again." (PS..... I was..... The Phantom. The Ghost who walks.)
The belief that this song is about Stan Laurel is a common misconception. Davies detailed the motives behind the song in an interview a few years ago - quote "One night I nodded off at a party and woke up and saw all these decadent people running around. I had a vision of being a circus clown. I thought, “What are we doing?” We were going from day to day to day like performing seals. And that’s where I got the idea for [the 1967 single] “Death of a Clown.” I went back to me mum’s house with the same old out-of-tune piano and I plunked out three notes, and it turned into the song."
I use to listen to this great Kink's song "Death Of A Clown" 50 years ago, but I forgot about it until now. Now, I can't get the song outta my head, lol.
There is something timeless about the Kinks compositions and this is a perfect example. A sad song of a fading memory someone described as peeling grafitti at a dead fairground. A wonderful image to accompany the song. And the fuzzy images of people dancing old time style in the video is a brilliant idea.
Timeless works very well in describing the work released by The Kinks throughout the entirety of their career. They never fit in with nearly anything their contemporaries were doing. In their biggest hayday, the early 60's into the early 70's they were doing very amazing stuff and never did they sound like anyone/anything else. Hell, Pete Townshend of "The Who" has admitted to being not only a big fan, but also that their earliest singles were heavily "influenced" by the sound of The Kinks and I believe "The Who" were, at that very early time in their career, using the production work of Shel Talmy.
It's more than 24 years ago now that my best mate, jokingly nicknamed The Lunatic Bruno, was murdered by thugs in Zambia. I cannot play this song without thinking back of this gentle man; 'nobody needs fortunes told anymore'. Here's to you, my old pal. Great clip, Mr. Webber, does the song credit.
Holy shit. I'm sorry for your loss. Sudden loss from Violent crime has a certain seasoning on the human soul. I'm sure your a better man for suffering that loss. I've lost too many best friends over the years who did not need to go that way.. Snafu brother. Keep on keeping on.
The Kinks were brilliant. Albums like Face to Face, Something Else and Village Green Preservation Society are classic albums. Waterloo Sunset is the perfect pop song.
Happy Birthday Dave Davies born on February 3, 1947. He is an English guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for the English rock band the Kinks, which also featured his older brother Ray. Davies also sometimes undertook writing and/or lead vocals duties within the band, for example on songs such as "Death of a Clown", "Party Line", "Strangers" and "Rats". He has also embarked on a solo career, releasing several singles during the late 1960s and has since released eight solo albums. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Davies

Great song. And I doubt if any video could ever truly do it justice, but this on comes close. It has that - to me anyway - melancholy, yet strangely upbeat feeling the song has.
Even though it's not The Kinks, but Dave Davies of the Kinks, this song exudes everything that represents the Kinks. Namely irony, wit, sarcasm, crowned by an inimitable melody, a catchiness without being trivial. Wonderful song, it has a regular place in my songbook. Just like "Susannah's still alive", another masterpiece by Dave Davies.
I read an interview that Dave says it was written about himself. By the time he was 21 he had several years of heavy partying and wanted a clean start. He said he was the clown when he drank and didn’t like how he behaved.

A very underrated Band with lots of Hits and great, timeless Songs 🙌🏻
Underrated?
They were/are a very successful British band

muswell Hill's greatest, let's all drink to dave Davies
My makeup is dry and it cracks on my chin
I'm drowning my sorrows in whiskey and gin
The lion tamer's whip doesn't crack anymore
The lions they won't bite and
The tigers won't roar
La la la La
So let's all drink to the death of a clown
Won't someone help me to break up this crown
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
La la la la la la la la la la
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
The old fortune teller lies dead on the floor
Nobody needs fortunes told anymore
The trainer of insects is
Crouched on his knees
And frantically looking for runaway fleas
La la la la la la la la la la
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
So won't someone help me
To breakup this crown
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
La la la la la la la la la la
