Happy Birthday Dave Davies born on February 3, 1947. He is an English guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for the English rock band the Kinks, which also featured his older brother Ray. Davies also sometimes undertook writing and/or lead vocals duties within the band, for example on songs such as "Death of a Clown", "Party Line", "Strangers" and "Rats". He has also embarked on a solo career, releasing several singles during the late 1960s and has since released eight solo albums. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Davies
Even though it's not The Kinks, but Dave Davies of the Kinks, this song exudes everything that represents the Kinks. Namely irony, wit, sarcasm, crowned by an inimitable melody, a catchiness without being trivial. Wonderful song, it has a regular place in my songbook. Just like "Susannah's still alive", another masterpiece by Dave Davies.
I myself have covered this song countless times in the last few years, partly in an attempt to bring back the memories of when at my first college party I sort of danced on this great song in September 1967. When I watch this video, I genuinely feel the atmosphere of back then. Very well done, Jack!!
My makeup is dry and it cracks on my chin I'm drowning my sorrows in whiskey and gin The lion tamer's whip doesn't crack anymore The lions they won't bite and The tigers won't roar La la la La So let's all drink to the death of a clown Won't someone help me to break up this crown Let's all drink to the death of a clown La la la la la la la la la la Let's all drink to the death of a clown The old fortune teller lies dead on the floor Nobody needs fortunes told anymore The trainer of insects is Crouched on his knees And frantically looking for runaway fleas La la la la la la la la la la Let's all drink to the death of a clown So won't someone help me To breakup this crown Let's all drink to the death of a clown La la la la la la la la la la

I love this track. I like my music to be both uplifting and extremely dark, once you listen closer. I love me some sad waltzes...

All great songs are equal. However, some great songs are more equal than others. This is one.
My dad was brought up in that time when music was amazing & this song is one I love listening to
As always lyrically brilliant, every song has a story behind them... Hopefully they will tour after their differences are sorted...🤞
Fantastic!

A truly brilliant and original song. Should have been a massive hit for Dave Davies.
