    They have acknowledged it, it's due to aging molds, and gave them a chance to offer a new mold with a slightly newer design.

    • @andrewalexander9508
      @andrewalexander9508 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah I was going to suggest something similar to this. Even if the molds weren't wearing out if Romania isn't just doing assembly and the chassis is being built there, you aren't going to want to move all the molds and manufacturing tools over it would probably be cheaper to make new ones. Bonus being that it is a dated design and just squaring it off and going with a flat color makes it look much much more modern.

      Same here. I practically live in my 20yr-old HD600s... I've replaced the cable half a dozen times (HD650 cables are stronger), replaced the headband 4 times, and the earpads twice (due for a third time soon). If headphones get any better than these (with a decent amp), I'm not sure I even care to know - I'd happily use these forever.

      @@JonnyTenebrous You seem like you have experience with the audio business. I'm torn between getting a pair of HD 598s or HD 6XX (which I heard are similar 600). I really enjoy the complexity of certain music and noticing every single piece of the song. I've never had any real experience with audiophile gear so I have no idea what to amplifier to pair them with.

    • @JonnyTenebrous
      @JonnyTenebrous 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@keymind117 Well, I was studying music in university when I bought my HD600's all those years ago, though eventually went down a different career path - so I'm not in the audio business (just an enthusiast, who still mixes audio/music on occasion and enjoys critical listening!). I've owned several additional pairs of headphones since, for various uses, closed back vs open, etc... but I've not actually heard the HD 598s or HD 6XX. However, I've had a look and the HD 598's only have an impedance of 50 ohm (as opposed to 300 ohm for the HD600), which means you can drive them sufficiently through consumer audio equipment without an amplifier. This is similar to the HD 599's (which I bought for my wife), and honestly those sound great for listening to music... but they're not "neutral" like the HD600's so are less useful for mixing and very critical listening. Still - many people prefer a bit more bass and don't really want "reference" type headphones. The HD6XX is 300 ohm, just like the HD600, so it "requires" an amp to get the full benefit. However, between you and I, I don't absolutely always amp my HD600's... sometimes it's just inconvenient to use an amp. No, they don't sound nearly as good unamped, but they still sound really good compared to most (lesser/"consumer" class) headphones, imo. There's lots of amps out there, but lots of them don't push a 300 ohm load that well, so you'd have to do some research - I haven't been in the market for a long time, so don't know the current choices available. HD600 is so popular, you should have an easy time finding discussion of good amp choices to fit your budget. In my opinion, if you go for HD600's you should go the whole nine yards and source an amp. The HD6XX's look like a great deal that will offset the cost of adding an amp into the budget. Hope that was at all helpful ;).

    The HD650 has always been known as superior to the HD600? I've never heard anyone say that it is. What I've heard a lot of people say is that they prefer the HD650 because its slightly warmer but not many argue that its objectively superior, in fact the opposite is true. The whole reason the HD600 still exists (unlike the HD650) and probably will for many, many years to come is how insanely popular it is in the professional world for mixing and mastering where neutrality & accurate tonality are by far the most important considerations. In that world the HD650 is considered objectively inferior. Also, its pretty common for those of us who use speakers & headphones only for music enjoyment to refer to headphones as mid-forward when in fact they are just neutral. I've heard this happens with studio monitors as well. The HD600 is objectively superior to the other HD6xx models because the only objective differences between them are the neutrality and the tonal accuracy. The other models are "funner" and preferred by most people who are using them for music enjoyment but the HD600 is very hard to beat at what it was built to do which is mixing & mastering.

    • @devhen
      @devhen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @Wingnutt 1 I'm curious about what models you think are better for mastering these days. The world of high end headphones has exploded with hundreds of models that are quite good but when it comes to studio/professional equipment that is designed for high powered mixing boards rather than iPhones, and focused on neutrality and accuracy over all else, ... that world is still very much as it was 10 or 20 yrs ago and the HD600 is still one of the best there is for that audience IMO. I could be wrong. I use them for listening to music myself but they have been gathering dust for the last couple years because of their weak bass, until I put Dekoni Elite Velour pads (AKA Drop 6xx aftermarket pads) on them a few weeks ago which gives them the perfect amount (small but significant) of bass boost IMO. Now they are just about perfect for most music. Sort of the "best of both worlds" between the HD600 & 650/6xx.

    I'm pretty sure it's the opposite. There are more people who thinks the 600 is the superior headphone over the 650. Even Tyll recommended the 600 over the 650 more so. Thing is, there's a thing about the 600 being neutral, but at the same time not being too fatiguing nor analytical. It's why a lot of people say there's no true upgrade from the 600, it just really is.

    • @adams5389
      @adams5389 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      The 650 has more low end extension and more detail in the highs, I prefer to use it for casual listening. But many audio engineers have noted that the 600 translates better to other systems, and as you mentioned, it is less fatiguing which helps when mixing late into the night when for whatever reason you can’t use speakers. It is an irreplaceable tool for many, myself included.

    I mostly use studio monitors so when I want insane details I can have them. However on many songs i prefer the HD600 because they even make old recordings sound really good without actually losing details that are supposed to be there.
    The only way I can explain it is that I fell the driver is very detailed in the midrange and looses some of that in the treble region, since most artifacts are there. This might also be the reason the HD600 doesn't have any sibilance problems without sounding dark.

  • @MacTX
    @MacTX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    Silent revisions in the electronics industry often times get done when improvement in manufacturing allows the product to be made cheaper thus increasing profits. The HD600 has been around for so long that it doesn't make sense that they'd do this revision now, after 2 decades. You're probably right that this was probably a cost cutting measure. Not being made in Ireland but in Romania probably makes it cheaper to manufacturer. Taking out the speckle part of the manufacturing process would save money, probably not much per individual units but adds up over the entire production run. The lighter plastic is probably cheaper plastic. The only thing to worry about is if the new quality is as good as the old version. I like the older textured speckled look. I'm glad that I bought my replacement last year when my old one from more than a decade back finally started to give out, right driver started to go.
    I don't agree on the part about a lot of people preferring the 650 over the 600. If that were the case and Sennheiser was losing sufficient amounts of 600 sales to the 650, the 600 wouldn't have been kept around for as long as it has and this silent revision wouldn't have been necessary. My guess is that the 650 was meant to replace the 600 but when sales didn't quite match expectation, they kept both around.

You feel like you're wearing something that was deigned for you to JUST LISTEN to the music, in a very focused and sincere way. No hype or weird stuff going on.

    I still own and listen to my first generation Sennheiser HD-600's which I bought for $600 back in 1998. They still sound fantastic and the only thing I've done to them in 23 years is replace the ear pads, the headband pad and upgraded the stock cable to a better aftermarket one. Since 1998 I have added a pair of Beyerdynamic Tesla T1's and most recently a pair of Hifiman HE1000's to my stable. I can't say there is a great difference between my HD-600's and the Tesla T1's. The He1000's are a whole different story. They blow my Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic headphones clear out of the water!!! Still my HD-600's are a great little headphone and I believe, even in today's world of hi-end headphones, still have relevance. As far as the HD-600 to the HD-650 I've always preferred the HD-600. I think they will always have a place in the market because of their great original design. They wouldn't still be made 24 years later for no reason.

I feel they are a bit more bright and very very little worse bass in comparision with HD650. For vocal, instruments, jazz, pop I would vote for HD600. For electro, techno, house HD650. Or in other way if you are fresh and reeady for more bright emotions choose HD600 if you are tired after work or need laidback listen to all kind of music choose HD650. Both are outstanding great. I have listen to many other Sennheiser, Sony, Hifiman and with good dac/amp HD600 & HD650 are my favourite. They produce pro sound not fancy/unnatural. 650 is no better to 600, they are two sides of the same coin. 600 was build for studio neutral accuracy, 650 was tuned for warm pleasant sound, still senn didn't compromise on the design and they remain very detailed, just like their older brother. Try the HD580 Precision if you get a chance, old one, not to be confused with the HD58x which is a totally different driver. I haven't A/B compared them but my HD580's are just incredible in their detail. They have been slightly upgraded over the years, to HD650 pads for earcups, HD600 pads for headband, HD650 cable and inlay foams, but no grill swap. The best part is they don't ever sound over analytical, but bad recordings sound terrible on them because they don't "smooth over" the sound in any way, what you hear is what the source gives.

    My HD660s bought 3 months ago were also made in Romania. There was a supply shortage here in Europe during early fall and when the new batch came it was made in Romania. Not sure were the previous batch was made. I consider these as well as the 600 as headphones worth more than they are selling for if you value tone neutrality and you are not a basshead. They are not made to impress. In terms of built quality the proof of the pudding is in the eating. They last through decades of abuse even though perceived built quality seems low. Form should follow function not the other way around. PS Just to be clear about it. I would buy again the 660s even if they were Euro 1k rather than 369 including 24% VAT which I paid.

    Great video and knowing the headphones you talked about I know you perfectly described the differences. Being a pro photographer who returned to film photography I appreciated very much you comparison of the HD600 to a movie recorded on film. The HD660s on a photography film comparison would be a Fuji Neopan: great contrast, great resolution, great emulsion stability, no problems pushing or pulling the exposure. The HD600 are like a film that hasn't all those great qualities but has that smootness, that fine tonal passages that the other film misses like a (now unicorn) Agfa Scala 200 iso positive film. For me, this is the best sound that I want to hear from music, movies and games. But I want to buy another HD600, but I worry that the new one is not as good as the old one. It was way beyond the pale too much. Everything I've read about the 650's vs 600's leads me to believe that the 600's benefit from a more powerful amp and the 650's MIGHT sound better on more budget oriented gear. They're pretty much the headphone equivalent of NS10 studio monitors. You can confidently mix vocals and pretty much every acoustic instrument on these and get pretty accurate results. The same cannot be said of the 650/660/6xx, they're just not as useful as a studio monitoring headphone, but I guess you can mix anywhere if you know your gear well enough.

    The blue molds made it look like marble... more high end. When it released in the 90s, it was the high-end. So I can see why they don't really care if they switch to boring black to save money or use new molds.

    Josh, I own the HD600 in all of it's 90's flavor and my pair is the second purchase. My first pair somehow wound up in the dishwasher shortly after I purchased them back in the day. I was working a second shift job and my son was beginning to get moving around quickly and I don't think my wife noticed. Well it didn't work out so well! I love these headphones and I use them along with an inexpensive Chinese built tube amplifier and an Emotiva DAC. I am very much please with the set-up even if not super high end. I have upgraded my tubes and the combination is really nice, plenty powerful and delivers enough bass extension to please my ears. And believe it or not, there are times when I am fooled by sounds which do in fact seem to come from outside of the ear cups and force me to replay a part of the music once again in order to see if it repeats. It always does. I try to take care of my gear and have never worried about build quality. I have heard the 650 and I liked them but I had borred them and didn't feel a desire to purchase a similar pair of cans. To each his/her own I guess.

    All German and Austrian companies are moving the production to APAC, Romania, Poland, and so... because of the cheaper labor force. But the reason all new products aren't as they used to be, is not the country where they are produced. It is all because: cost reduction,... more profit. If we can produce Meze 99 classics in Romania, for sure we can also made some sens :). They are produced as the company wants,... cheap :)

    I modded my original hd600 be taking the outer foam and removed the spider cage. The foam on the inside i removed. Covered the exposed driver with a piece of pantyhose. For me these now sound much better. They have opened up in sound. And bassresponse is better. With these drivers getting more air they are opened up and can breathe better. And soundstage is more open and imaging is good. For my ears this is a good mod that benefits overall sound .

    Well the 600 paired with a proper tube amp can make someone really feel and connect with the music vs the other Senn variants.
    I suspect why the revision now is because there are more younger crowds getting into the audiophile hobby and this refreshed 600 color will market and sell very well vs the original granite countertop color that was released in the 90's.

    They upgraded the moulds so that's why the plastic parts are different - I like the new refresh more than the old (I have HD 660 S new version, HD 6XX and HD 58X Jubilee). I really like how the new HD 600 looks minus, the cable and head band cushion but those are easily changeable.
    I actually went and bought HD 600 capsules (which I'll receive soon) for my HD 58X as a little experiment - no idea how it's going to work out but fingers crossed that they are a good matching pairs. I find my HD 660 S really dark and not as natural sounding as my HD 6XX or even HD 58X in terms of frequency response. I expected it to be very similar to HD 58X but that's not the case. HD 6XX is brighter (but non-sibilant) and mids have much better clarity and presence. In HD 660 S case the dips right before sibilant range kinda ruins the whole thing. For that reason I don't really enjoy listening to it. HD 6XX just sound better to me. Interesting to see how my "HD 580 Jubilee" will sound like. :D

      Tup3x Are you sure your 660S isn’t defective? Dark is not the word I would use to describe them. 6XX would be closer to dark even though they are not. But we all hear different. The curve of your auditory system could be drastically different from mine and many others. Have you heard a Beyerdynamic DT 990?

    • @Tup3x

      @@Assimilator702 I can't be certain. Compared to my "HD 600" (got the drivers yesterday) for example it feels like there's a pillows between the driver and your ear. The difference is rather drastic.

      @Tup3x 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Assimilator702 Pads can make some differences but not this large. They are pretty similar to replacement pads I use my "HD 600". The ones that came with HD 58X were much flatter and not as comfortable. Not sure if it's just normal variance or something else. Sound didn't change though after I swapped them.
      I don't remember HD 660 S having this dark upper midrange when I tried it previously. That being said, I can't trust my ear memory.

    Excellent video, I auditioned both the old design & the new design of the HD600 (the new design is fractionally more comfortable in my opinion but it doesn’t come with the presentation box) they both sound so similar that I couldn’t perceive any difference. I auditioned them alongside the HD660s which I preferred as it gave slightly more definition in instruments and tighter bass (in my opinion)... other ears may come to different conclusions. I’m using them with a JDS LABS atom headphone amp & a topping D50S DAC. Would you be so kind as to let me know where you buy the headphone cables for the hd600/660s from please🤔

    I got a pair of these, and wow, the build quality of the new HD600s feel comparable to a pair of $20 headphones. The plastic feels very cheap and hollow. The sound is good though, and the new plastic does make it pretty light at least compared to my HE-4XX's.

    Thanks, Josh. Interesting vid. My 600s are pushing 20 years, if not older. So old, the foam is gone, and I mean you wouldn't even know there had been foam there. IIRC, they cost a lot more than $299 20 years ago. I will say, I'm not a 'headphone guy.' But, I can see the day coming soon where that will be my reality. Were I to buy new cans in the near term, and thinking long-term, I'd aim a lot higher than these 'phones, and add in the cost of a great amp for a total rig. Headphone tech has come so far in the past few years--if that's the way you listen most of the time, you could toss some serious coin in that direction and have a killer system--while saving on real power components and loudspeakers. Keep up the good work, always interesting.

    Josh, love your reviews man, but Jesus Christ you got this wrong. Sennheiser owns the manufacturing, so whatever mould and materials they used in Ireland they could have used in Romania. On head-fi the consensus is that the new model avoids paint chipping, is a more modern design, and at least as durable ad the old model. If only you would have informed yourself a bit before this review... honestly I would remove this video. It's just not up to your standard and embarassing in saying "the new manufacturer couldn't do the old design".
