He got all five stones loaded despite the obvious height disadvantage and having to basically press them onto the platforms after realizing he was too short. That is unbelievable. I kinda wish stones got scaled for height.
That overhead medley was incredibly entertaining and interesting to watch. Seeing Oberst and Arsjo struggle with the stability of the barbell press really showed us, the viewers, how much balance and stability is involved with lifting such weights.
Shaw is one of the strongest men to ever live in my opinion. I think that Shaw actually over thinks things when he competes & that's when he makes mistakes. Brian needs to play a Superhero in a Marvel Movie. He could be called Gigantor. Brian couldn't be a nicer guy. I wish they wouldn't show the winner on the Thumbnail. Ruins it for us who have forgotten the winner that year or haven't even seen it yet.
@@brettmoberg6140 strongman in recent years has been a lot more speed than strength like you still need a lot of strength but you need to be quick and brian while been stronger than the tohers he doesnt have the speed
@@bentanaka2324 That is so true Ben. I think that's how Tom Stoltman has won the last 2 WSM Finals because of his younger age & because he is so very quick & of course uber strong. Tom might win several more. I just wish Shaw would Win his 5th Title cause I know that's what he has been Training so hard for the last few years. If the events were all Static Events like presses, deadlifts & squats then I'm sure he would have Won at least one more but since some of the events are timed moving events it is so hard to move Shaw's 400 lb Frame around & plus he is 40 yrs old going against 20 somethings.
As a personal message from his lost back in 2012 due to bicep injury on his right arm, this is totally Brian's message to retook the title for the 2nd time. Totally worth it. And it is a shame this is the last time we've seen Vytautas Lalas went into the WSM before he plagued with a horrible Back injuries in 2014 and continued the next year until he retired. Hats off to the awesome arm wrestler guy with his great shoulder power.
I always followed WSM every year at Christmas here in the UK. But I didn't remember Mike Jenkins. He was very impressive in the 2012 contest and I think he would have been a real contender. Very sad
He died at 31 from chronic steroid abuse. I imagine he encountered problems along the way and was urged to dial it back. He probably knew the risks and decided that it was worth it.
WSM rushed through in the editing to make it for pay for view I guess. I much prefer the unedited Arnold and Shaw contests on youtube. WSM is also notorious for taking a long time to release the video.
Shaw really trained hard in deadlift from 2012 to 13, it seems. He was not only gifted physically to be a great strongman, but he also had a good work ethic and fighting spirit. And he organized great contests. A really remarkable man.
I remember hearing in a video from Hafthor that basically his friend/team member I think maybe Stefan Solvi had basically said after Brian went that Hafthor should just go out and do his best and try for 2nd place and that pissed him off because why not try for 1st, so he went out and blew the event out of the water. I think this must have been that year. Interesting!
@@EbonAvataryeah, and right when Z fell of he was replaced by Eddie for two years, if it weren’t for them, then today Hafthor would be undisputed goat of strongman
This isn`t like Mr Olympia where the top athletes only do 1 comp. These guys are travelling around the world competing in numerous comps. Sometimes they are physically fucked when it matters...........
Funny to see Thor weaker on the deadlift now that he is so strong at it. He really worked hard at it. It's not just size; those who win have to have a strong work ethic.
I love Brian but man you gotta admit he was lucky to take 4th in the dumbbell ladder with that performance. Zydrunas was such a dominant presser. Same could be said for Zydrunas surprisingly not winning the Deadlift, though.
Notice the difference between WSM, on one hand, and Shaw productions and Arnold classic strongman on the other. WSM takes half a year to come out and is very produced but cuts out most of the action. It's designed for tv. Shaw and Arnold contests show everything (much like Crossift) and are designed for TH-cam, and they are immediate. I much prefer the latter format. WSM needs to show its contests the same way; I think they'd get more views in the end. Also, WSM flies these guys out some remote locale; the one in Africa's heat was unfair to the athletes.
America has started to produce some strong man finaly. Traditionally in Europe it was always the Icelanders Russ8ans and even some Scottish highlanders who dominated the strenght sports
Polish weren’t bad either. Strongman unfortunately isn’t very popular in Europe, too bad its non existent in the Balkans cause there are a lot of big and tall dudes there.
It's surprising to see Thor miss a 925 lb deadlift now that he has a world record in it. He must have trained hard in the last decade to get to that point.
@@sefermenace6038 Hafthor Bjornsson deadlifted 501kg, and although it was not at a deadlift meet. It was in Iceland in a gym. They weighed each plate and had a referee Magnus ver Magnusson who does the same job at WSM -- so Thor did it. I believe Trey Mitchell did a cheat deadlift of 505 kg in contest (meaning rested at the knees). But I acknowledge that Eddie Hall broke the world record of 500 kg. He was the first but not the last.
Kind of irritating the russian came in with numerous injuries and couldnt finish when they could have had eddie hall in as a replacement…feel so bad for eddie when he was first starting out to get into WSM
Rewatching these older years, it's definitely apparent that the contests have become a little bit less intense like Brian has expressed time and time again. That overhead medley would likely still be challenging for half the pack in todays competition. The whip on those barbells looks like an absolute man maker.

Just shows you don't need to be 6 foot plus to compete at the top.
What a lineup! And that Z/Shaw photo finish on the stones was amazing.
It’s wild that from 2009 to 2016 the only winners of WSM were Big Z and Shaw.
2009 Z
2010 Z
2011 Shaw
2012 Z

I think it's really because it's a thin bar, not Olympic standard, so quite wobbly.
Mike Burke was a SAVAGE wow! That pressing medley was wild
