I'm an old mushroom eater from the 60's & I've been playing these guys for the last couple of years. John Dwyer & Ty Segall are carrying on a time honored tradition. Such an organic Bay Area phenomenon. Mutilator was one of my faves for '15. This is such a treat....and he's sober!

He's got an aluminum guitar neck-is that a Travis Bean guitar? That would be a key factor in his searing tone.
his guitar is a custom by EGC (electrical guitar company) that use their own custom single coil pickups. he uses a fender bandmaster reverb as well
Cleegan yep. i emailed egc few years ago axed if they made it for him and they replied that yep they did. still eyeing one for myself. the tone is fuggin on blast.

If you had a clue about guitar playing you'd notice that. Also the guy is a master of tone, combined with his playing he has so much power and range

KEXP is responsible for alot of new bands on my playlist. Thee Oh Sees are the latest. Love the guitar sound.
So many elements make this band amazing. The music, the charisma, the confidence, the originality, the tight live performances that somehow overcome the recordings. It's inspiring and beautiful to watch.
I'm not sure who's enjoying this more, me or the band. The way the drummer dances in his seat and the guitarist fiddles with his pedals while the bassist grooves eyes shut. So good

Yes, SERIOUSLY great guitar player, but let's give some credit to the really great rhythm section ... these guys lay down the solid foundation for him to go crazy over.
they are actually giving the songs their structure while the fuzzy guitar is just completing the wall of sound. At the same time it gives John security that even if he screwes up it won't really be heard as the song is actually almost complete with drums and bass alone.
At the same time i find it amazing how he plays so viciously and sings at the same time. Pure magic right there

The drummers of (Thee) Oh Sees get a hell of a lot of love to be fair, Rincon is as much a beast solo as he is as a pair.

They played a gig a couple of months ago at a small Bar in Lima, Peru. It was a freakin massacre. During The Dream, Dwyer carried all equipment in the front to the back of the stage so we could all climb up the stage < 3
Bands like this are so great because they are better live than anything you ever will capture in a studio. Rock your ass off live!
This drummer absolutely kicks ass. Great time, incredible speed, and expressive, passionate playing. Definitely, without a doubt, John's best drummer yet.

Maybe it's my shitty computer speakers but the bass is no existent and the guitar is to loud, and id like a little more of a full drum sound. I don't think the sound is all that good at all. But this is the first time I've ever heard this band. Maybe this is their sound. I like the music, it's just to much treble.

I can accept that. It just sounds like a bootleg of sorts with all the focus on the guitar and vocals. I have listened to a few KEXP shows, thought the sound was better. But to me when the treble is that high it sounds piercing and makes me want to stop listening.

ive watched this and a bunch of other live vids so many times and dwyers guitar playing is something i just cant figure out. its like he just bashes away and everything comes out perfectly. i cant think of anyone else who makes it look that easy.
Well he sure has classic rock influences which is something i find unusual. I mean like classic classic rock melodies which most bands of this type cover up with blues, rock n roll and punk stuff. Maybe not so many oriental influences. He also plays some quite trolly riffs. I believe he's trolling a lot some riffs are like they came out from an old goofy cartoon.
Hes good at muting the strings that are not being fretted with either his index finger or thumb. Thats how he can bash the guitar and still make it sound clean.
He is not really playing complicated stuff, if you listen to the phrases, because they are just very basic licks. It is more how he conveys them, that gives him the impression of artistry, not so much his musical "talent"

Probably one of the hardest working rhythm sections of any band around nowadays. Saw them live around this time and the drummer and bass player were absolutely PUNISHED. I was truly impressed.
