What helps me push through a challenge is painting personalized birthday cards for all my kids and grandkids. I ask them what they want sometimes and then work to figure out how to paint it. 2 foxes under pink trees next to a lake with pink leaves floating on it...a snake chewing bubble gum. Landscapes, too.

Really nice, Helen. You dotted all the eyes! If you had given it a final wash with transparent red, that would've replicated how my eyes looked all through college! Another helpful lesson--👏👏

Helen~ Watching your videos has taught me many things I did not know. I love the little puddle of water technique. You are right about when dipping the brush in a glass of water drowns it in a whole lot of water that is not needed. I’ve never seen anyone do that, and I’m excited to try this.
My family (Stewart/Campbell), are from a tiny fishing village in Lossiemouth, Scotland. On the top of my “bucket list” is to be sitting on the beaches of the North Sea, and painting the beauty of what I’ve only seen in pictures. All the stories my grandad told me over the years , on how beautiful the sea is in person is something I’m truly hoping to see and paint one day. Your accent gives me a calmness that reminds me of my grandparents, and gives me a sense of peace.
I had taken a bit of a break from painting because I was getting frustrated and felt my paintings were not what I wanted. Watching your videos has given me hope and excitement to jump back in and give it another go.
I googled your name to know you better, and reading how you didn’t care for your job and decided to start painting full time surely must be so rewarding. Seeing a picture of your quaint home is a home I’ve always wished to live in. I could feel the serenity and a sense of peacefulness. A perfect setting to paint!
Thank you for all you do, and for taking your time to teach all of us. It’s so uplifting to open my facebook this morning and your group (which I belong to) was the very first thing on my newsfeed. I truly believe God helped with this because I’m going to pick up my brushes again. You truly are a blessing to me and so many others. Thank you again Helen.
    A huge hug from

Hi Janis. What a lovely story. Thank you for sharing. Also, thank you so much for your kind comments about my work et cetera. I love to hear about my viewers and I really enjoyed your story. I know it is all too easy to become frustrated with painting, especially watercolour because it’s well known for being a difficult medium to work with, however, just keep going, practising and enjoying. Once again, thank you so much for your kind words. X

The end of the picture is the hardest thing when it's time to add little fine details

Hi again Helen. Another lovely and informative video. Thank you so much! I am still searching for exactly which DR mixed media paper you use. I commented on your video about improving your watercolor using mixed media, being confused that the link to your paper did not state it being mixed media. Then I came to this video and you are using an even different DR paper - of which I have Googled and am unable to find. I SO want to experiment with using the MM paper, but want to be sure I get the right one. Any help you can provide will be hugely appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Sheila. I have checked the link on the other video and although it says cartridge paper on the Jacksons website, it is actually mixed media paper you can tell this from the little diagrams on the top of it. It has a slight texture to it which is what we’re looking for. I have doublechecked with D Rowney and I’m waiting for them to come back but it should be absolutely fine. If you can get hold of the Optima one that I talk about then that’s even better. I know that Hobbycraft sell

@@helencampbell Thank you Helen! I wanted to reply here, too, so I wouldn't leave others hanging as to the answers. I have ordered some of the Optima and look forward to trying it out. Thank you again for your help and for all you do for the rest of us! :-)

It would have helped to have more discussion of WHY you put color or didn’t.
