Quark showed some real tact here. Odo hates being pitied by anyone. Showing pity to him now, when he's been brought so low, would be a massive slap to the face to him. But Quark not only was the only one who came to check on Odo, he did it while making it look like he was only protecting his own financial interests, in order to preserve Odo's self respect.
I remember Quark's quarters are close to Odo's. When Odo makes noise, Quark hears it with his ferengi ears. He's wearing pajamas here. He can't sleep because Odo is wrecking his own room. I 100% believe Quark did not go in there as a friend.
Agreed, this has always been one of the many very deep, personal moments of star trek (altogether), and absolutely one of my favourites. Odo never had a truer friend than Quark.

When you get down to it, Deep Space Nine is about a cast of misfits. Characters who just don't fit their typical mould. Whether it's Sisko the blunt, straightforward captain having to play spiritual leader, Kira the fierce freedom fighter having to be an administrator, Bashir the genetic mutant hiding his condition, Dax the walking collection of misfit personalities, O'Brien the everyman who keeps getting into weird situations, Jake the kid who *doesn't* want to join Starfleet, Worf the Starfleet Klingon, Garak the sentimental old assassin, Rom the fool savant, Nog the street punk who turned his life around, Dukat the would-be hero with the heart of a monstrous tyrant, Damar the soldier who became a rebel, Eddington the Starfleet officer who dreamed of being a hero... And yes, Quark the Ferengi who's a people person and has a decent heart under the greed, and Odo the Founder who believes in justice over order, and fell in love with a solid. None of them were who you'd expect them to be, and the show made that interesting.
Bashir wasn't always a mutant, he was just an annoyingly chirpy doctor. They shouldn't have made him into a mutant in order to make him interesting; that's what character is for.
Kira was the ex soldier trying to find her place in a world that was no longer needed terrorists. All she had known was killing Cardassians and seeing her people die.
That clip of Odo with his hair undone like that was all the actors idea it also establish that Odo was broken because his hair is a part of his body and with his hair undone like that it shows that Odo was quite literally falling apart....

As much as he doesn't like Odo fouling up his plans, he also keeps the competition under control and stops real threats to the station.

He doesn't deal in weapons, he sold medical supplies to the Bajoran resistance at cost, he's helped odo and the others more than once and is, by ferengi standards, a very generous man. He knows things wouldn't be the same without odo, even if odo is constantly trying to nail him to the wall, but right here we see that he actually has enormous respect for odo. He doesn't abuse his power, he only does his job, and Quark knows he could have it FAR worse. When odo is dying Quark shows genuine concern and worry for him, and he even rescued Rom and the others after feeding them intel on the cardassian plan to detonate the mines around the wormhole. All in all, Quark is a guy who will do good things in the most selfish way he can.
Sounds like Quark would be the person to bring along 1-2 people to help unload the medical supplies, but coincidentally have 8-10 chairs for 'slaves' on his ship. He is not smuggling wanted Bajorans/refugees off-planet, he is merely bring along his workers to the next location. He is not bringing injured/starved Bajorans to Federation planets to set them free, he is merely dropping off slaves who are costing him more in life support than they are worth.
I don't think the greed or self interest is a facade. I'm sure he expects the bajorans to eventually pay him back for those supplies. He just conveniently forgets to send them the invoice. Quark is all about greed, even at others expense, just not too much at their expense. Overcharge a friend for a shipment? Sure. Render a decent guy so destitute they're homeless for massive profit? No.

I love that they never changed the hard-nosed relationship between these two, even at the end of the series. It's obvious they both care about each other in their own way, but they never had a big, mushy speech where they both acknowledged it explicitly. They probably could have written such a scene and made it work, but I just love that they never did.
S M Odo and Garak did kind of become more understanding of each other because of that because Odo could see how much it hurt Garak, and Garak had to struggle to separate his companions and his job, which wasn’t really a problem for him before.
These two had such a close relationship that neither would ever admit to. When Odo leaves the station for the last time he still pretends not to care, but admits the truth to Kira. Such great writing.
Fun fact the actor for Quark Armin Shimerman actually played as the voice for Andrew Ryan from Bioshock and the actor for Odo Rene Auberjonois played as Mr. House from Fallout New Vegas. Pretty ironic how both played very similar characters but poor Quark even other versions of himself it seems like he can't seem to do sustain his wealth as good as Odo does who manages his city way better. Speaking of 'would you kindly' take this golf club to Mr. House's office please Mr Courier?

This episode and "Heart of Stone" are two of Rene's best. The way he portrays utter heartbreak through the mask always amazes me. He truly was a master. RIP

Quark knows how to talk to people. You can't suddenly change your personality to try to help others they rightly see it as a lie, or disingenuous. Be you, but tell them the truth.
I like how Quark says he is quite admired, the constable who always gets his man, so sure of it people bet on how long it will take him. Quark reminds him he is excellent in vocation and cannot feel shame and sorry for himself. He basically says be the best you can be either way and *you* have the option to tell her how you feel-but either way keep eyes ahead of you and not feeling damaged in the dark-we need you...to be gambled on.
This scene is so touching. I can really feel the emotional subtext. There is a kind of respect and admiration that can only be experienced, through an adversarial relationship.
It's almost a game between them. Quark tries to get away with something quasi-illegal. Odo tries to stop him/catch him... and so on and on it goes. Both respecting and admiring the other for playing the game so well and being a worthy opponent against their respective talents.
We all need that one friend. That one friend who smacks you in the face with the truth. Not because they're mean or malicious. No, because they care about you and want you to start to come to terms with what you've done and with what has happened.

It's not Odo's way to accept such overt demonstrations of friendship from others. Quark is being a good friend by meeting Odo where he's at emotionally without making the situation mushy. Also, if he had said "yes", Quark probably thought Odo wouldn't have believed it anyway.
I don't know if I would say best. It certainly had the best character development. Even Morn who was a glorified extra who had NO SPOKEN LINES had more development than several of the A list characters on Voyager.

Quark was lying about why he was helping. Sure, he did care about the pool. Money. But if what he said about his motivations were true, he never would have told Odo. Methinks the Ferengi protests too much...

This was a great part. I'm watching all of the Star Trek shows in order and enjoying it more than I did when I was a kid. I used to think TNG was the best but DS9 is really growing on me. Quark & Odo episodes are awesome.
I loved the characters chemistry they were both brilliant to watch and watch their characters grow DS9 was such an incredible show with diverse characters

I initially cried for oddo. Then I quickly put myself together and realized Quark had to say that to preserve their old relationship which in a way keeps them both going. It was respect of his perfect adversary.
This is the great thing about the show-- they're not always on a mission, and have time for interaction between the characters; and they always busy agreeing with each other.

That wasn't just him performing charity, that was him struggling to reconcile his desire to do good with his religious beliefs. DS9 was GREAT at handling the juxtaposition of religious faith versus difficult situations.
True, but he doesn't know the rules of the games played in Quark's either, because he's just not interested (so he says in "Babel" He's actually a bit embarrassed about it.) Maybe he treats such things as beneath his notice. That or Quark made it up on the spot to make him feel better.
It is really interesting that even though that Quark spoke from the perspective of greed, what he said still stands true and are actual valid advice that will help many others in their time of need.

While I don't think Star Trek Discovery is awful, rewatching scenes like these reminds of the wonderful characters and their interactions they just haven't quite recaptured. They really need to fix that.

Rene said it reminded him of a Samurai in defeat. The director was cagey about that decision because Paramount hated ad-libs.

Quark knows how to talk to people. You can't suddenly change your personality to try to help others they rightly see it as a lie, or disingenuous. Be you, but tell them the truth.
I like how Quark says he is quite admired, the constable who always gets his man, so sure of it people bet on how long it will take him. Quark reminds him he is excellent in vocation and cannot feel shame and sorry for himself. He basically says be the best you can be either way and *you* have the option to tell her how you feel-but either way keep eyes ahead of you and not feeling damaged in the dark-we need you...to be gambled on.
This scene is so touching. I can really feel the emotional subtext. There is a kind of respect and admiration that can only be experienced, through an adversarial relationship.

It's almost a game between them. Quark tries to get away with something quasi-illegal. Odo tries to stop him/catch him... and so on and on it goes. Both respecting and admiring the other for playing the game so well and being a worthy opponent against their respective talents.
Quark's not allowed to talk in that lower voice because it seduces me and Quark shouldn't be seductive.

Quark seems to be the nexus of a web of bromances in the station.

A cold hearted response, but why ruin a perfectly good love-hate relationship with something as insipid as friendship?
It's not Odo's way to accept such overt demonstrations of friendship from others. Quark is being a good friend by meeting Odo where he's at emotionally without making the situation mushy. Also, if he had said "yes", Quark probably thought Odo wouldn't have believed it anyway.
Quark is his friend. Such a good friend he does not want ODO feeling compromised by having to acknowledge it.
RIP Rene Auberjonois! You will be sorely missed, but I will always have Odo as a reminder of your talent and spirit!

I don't know if I would say best. It certainly had the best character development. Even Morn who was a glorified extra who had NO SPOKEN LINES had more development than several of the A list characters on Voyager.
Next Generation is better.

You know this is what I love about their dynamic in his own (Albeit extremely selfish) Quark way he really did try to help Odo
Quark was lying about why he was helping. Sure, he did care about the pool. Money. But if what he said about his motivations were true, he never would have told Odo. He would have tried to get him back on his feet without seeming like a greedy scumbag. Instead, Quark stated that it was about the pool, only the pool, over and over again. Methinks the Ferengi protests too much...
@@toatahu2003 Apparently there was no pool and he made it up for the situation? Which leads me back to a Ferengi rule "free advice is often seldom cheap" but in this instance "he was telling the truth".

This was one of my favorite episodes for this scene! It helped me find my way when relationships didn't play out as I'd hoped

This was a great part. I'm watching all of the Star Trek shows in order and enjoying it more than I did when I was a kid. I used to think TNG was the best but DS9 is really growing on me. Quark & Odo episodes are awesome.
I loved the characters chemistry they were both brilliant to watch and watch their characters grow DS9 was such an incredible show with diverse characters

@@SomeGuyHowGoesIt So? The female Dominion changeling in charge ended the whole war in the Alpha quadrant IF Odo would return with them/heal them. A single love relationship compared to this means "nothing", the great link to them is everything - it IS you, you are not simply 'a part of it'.
To be fair it took him a while to realise what he was feeling and then shit kept happening. Also everyone on this shows has issues.

I initially cried for oddo. Then I quickly put myself together and realized Quark had to say that to preserve their old relationship which in a way keeps them both going. It was respect of his perfect adversary.

@@corjonbett More than that. The Ferengi religion is literally based around capitalism and profit making. That wasn't just him performing charity, that was him struggling to reconcile his desire to do good with his religious beliefs.

It is hard to believe Odo didn't know about the betting pool.
True, but he doesn't know the rules of the games played in Quark's either, because he's just not interested (so he says in "Babel" He's actually a bit embarrassed about it.) Maybe he treats such things as beneath his notice. That or Quark made it up on the spot to make him feel better.
And this why Quark runs a bar. As he is a People Person.
It is really interesting that even though that Quark spoke from the perspective of greed, what he said still stands true and are actual valid advice that will help many others in their time of need.
Quark and odo having the closest thing to a heart to heart that they can actually handle.

While I don't think Star Trek Discovery is awful, rewatching scenes like these reminds of the wonderful characters and their interactions they just haven't quite recaptured. They really need to fix that.

Quark really had a heart and cared about people. It just was a weakness in Ferengi culture to show people you care or aren’t always focused on profits. So he hid this.
