    We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
    ► freethoughtblog...
    TH-cam comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of TH-cam comment sections, in our experience.
    We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

    The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.

My mother no longer goes to church nor reads the Bible, but she sees being a Christian as her identity and clings to “the faith”. Huxxy no it’s definitely brainwashing and poisoning. If someone grows up being told, and believing, that every unexplainable thing is attributed to god, versus someone that grew up never even hearing the term “god” (which is practically impossible nowadays) , when both of those people experience something unexplainable, the religious person will automatically gravitate towards god, and the person who has never even heard the term god will not assume some higher power/creator is the cause. the brainwashed will ALWAYS go back to their belief and faith to explain things, because that’s all they know and all they were taught. Much the same if you teach a monkey from when it’s an infant, that a certain sign means it’s food time, and then another monkey that never is taught this, when the sign is shown, the one monkey that was taught will think it’s food time and become excited (even if you don’t feed it), and the other will simply wait for it’s food, disregarding the sign.

      I take real exception to the comments here implying lack of intellect for Christians (or any other religious adherent). That indicates a lack of understanding of the reasons for faith. There is plenty of statistical evidence that the bulk of adherents to a belief were born into it and have grown up in an environment supporting it. So, largely accident of birth and environment.

      @@wernerstapela4616 I tend to agree with you. And that was the spirit (so to speak) of my original post. Religious education/indoctrination can poison an otherwise intelligent person, leading them to change the subject without realizing it, polluting a conversation with red herrings, non-sequiturs, and fallacies.

    • @johniec5282

      @@wernerstapela4616 . I agree, religious beliefs aren't rational to begin with. Small children tend to trust whatever their parents tell them. If their parents tell them there is a god when they are very young ( and don't know better) and later in their lives the community where they grow up reinforce such beliefs, chances are that they will keep that way of thinking through their adult life.

      I mean, feelings allow you to understand what is good for YOURSELF. Your needs, what you want, what you think, etc.
      The problem is that they completely mix up what is real for them, a.k.a "what they need", with what is actually real OUTSIDE OF THEM.
      It's insane, really. Just because you feel love does not mean that it's some kind of entity outside of you. It just means that you feel love, that's all. Just because you want a purpose does not mean that some entity gave one to you. It just means that you feel the need to have one.

Because the host deals with the argument logically, rather than emotionally, he thinks it is a straw man because she’s not engaging the argument “on its own terms.”

Birth does feel like a “miracle.” In unmedicated birth, the mother is naturally flooded with oxytocin and other love hormones. Others present often catch the mood. Yea, and why is her position difficult? Maybe because she has no good explanations or evidence for the reasoning of her beliefs? Atheists don't find their position difficult. I could debate a pastor and not feel like I was in a difficult position, because I could back up what I say with reasoning, logic and evidence. I too give her credit for calling in and putting her ignorance on display for all to see.
      Faith is a realm of ignorance, there is no truth or wisdom to be found in such a place only ignorance. The path to truth is littered with the bodies of the ignorant, and the path to Atheist is littered with bibles.
      Ignorance is not just what you don't know, it is also what you won't know. Her problem isn't that she doesn't know, it's because she won't know. That's why her argument sounds foolish.

      When people say they do not know God, it is not because God has failed to reveal himself, or that God’s revelation is not clear enough. Rather, their ignorance of God is something they have done to themselves. They are lying to themselves, trying to convince themselves that God does not exist or that he is obscure, while all the time God is watching them. I Could Place hundreds of Quotations that clearly prove that their is a God in heaven, But as he has stated his handy work is seen in his creation...
      The Word of God is the only Truth and the only hope to obtaining a peaceful life with the one true living God. It is sharing all the wonderful things God has done for us a saved sinner. Those of us who have grown up in the teachings of the Lord our God have departed our rebellious years, feeling bulletproof and wise in our own understanding.
      Hebrews 11:1-3
      "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible."
      The word “Faith” means different things to different people and sadly, many people use it as a negative, disparaging term to describe anyone who believes blindly in God. But is this the kind of faith God desires for us to have? Is our faith really to be blind, without true understanding? If you look into the verse above, the writer of Hebrews will point out examples of believers who demonstrated real, saving faith in God. Each example of faith demonstrates trust, based on what that person knew and held as reassurance that God would act according to His promises. The "assurance" and "conviction" of faith is not blind belief, or gullibility, or wishful thinking or feelings. The characters mentioned in this chapter shows that they all had good reasons to trust in God. Their "faith" was not naively accepting fairy tales; it was acting in full confidence that God would do as He had promised, based on those experiences.
      Faith is so important because it is the means by which we have a relationship with God. This definition of faith contains intellectual assent and trust. Intellectual assent is believing something to be true. Trust is actually relying on the fact that the something is true. Understanding these two aspects of faith is crucial. Many people believe certain facts about Jesus Christ. Many people will intellectually agree with the facts the Bible declares about Jesus. But knowing those facts to be true is not what the Bible means by “faith.” The biblical definition of faith requires intellectual assent to the facts and trust in the facts.
      We must personally and fully rely on the death of Christ as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. We are expected to act in faith on God’s promises just as Abraham did, but we do that from a position of trust based on all the knowledge we have of God. Abraham followed God’s order based on his faith that God would keep His promise to raise up a nation through Isaac. Abraham had learned that God would keep His promises through a lifetime of walking with God, so this was a reasoned and informed faith.
      There will be times in our walk with God that we will act purely on faith because we do not have the whole picture, as in the case of Abraham. However this faith is not blind; it is based on knowledge of God’s nature and character, His promises in the Scriptures, and our personal experience walking with God every day. Faith and doubt exist on a spectrum, like light and darkness. As faith grows stronger, doubt vanishes. Let us all place our faith in God alone so that we would be strong in the Lord and ready to battle against the doubts planted by the enemy. Lord, increase our Faith!
      Galatians 2:20
      "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

      I know this is old, but my uncle did the same. My brother called me an athiest (i am), and my uncle corrected him, saying i was agnostic, which i corrected him and said i am an athiest. It then went from "I'll respect your belief" to "i would like for you to come to church with me" (he doesn't even like churches) while also reading sections of the bible (even though he treats the bible as a history book rather than holy scripture). I understand why he did it, but it was weird that me being an athiest was an issue while my brother was pagan and had no issue with it.

    • @fatmikecj
      @fatmikecj ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TreesTwisted I always assume that is because people with different religious beliefs still use the same reasoning and justifications for their beliefs, whilst atheism directly challenges the entire basis of religious belief. When I was a Christian I was quite happy to accept Islam, Buddhism etc as I just looked at it as people interpreting god in different ways, but felt that it was the same god overall.
      They also have the same core belief of "there must be something more than this" and that's a comfort. Atheism basically goes "nope, this is it" and that's also very scary for some.

Every time this caller was presented with a logical argument and asked a direct question, she diverted to something irrelevant, and thus never made any progress. God is real. Never stop believing God and pray without ceasing.
      Isaiah 66:1-2
      "Thus says the LORD: “Heaven is my throne,and the earth is my footstool;
      what is the house that you would build for me,and what is the place of my rest? All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word".
      Humility is the key to oneness with God. Consequently, it is also the key to oneness with our brethren. God's way of achieving oneness is for each person to be so attuned to God that he is motivated to do everything possible to ensure that the relationship (with God or fellow man) is not only unbroken, but constantly becoming ever closer.
      Humility is what impresses God. Pride gets between us and God, and without realizing it, we actually shut Him out of our lives.
      The Bible clearly shows that our spiritual well-being is dependent upon acknowledging, with our lives, our reliance upon the revealed will of God-His Word.

      John 14:6
      Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
      we are made in "the image of God" so life without God is life entirely lacking God's Spirit, which then is to live in the absence of the fullness of life, since God is "life and life eternal." God's purpose with mankind is to have eternal fellowship with those who truly love Him. For only love that comes from a free choice of the will is TRUE LOVE. God Is Holy, and His people were to be holy. God is faithful, and His people were to be faithful to Him. God is merciful, and His people were to be merciful. God has all the answers and with God nothing is impossible. God has stepped into his creation on numerous occasions. He sent his angels and servants to men and women. He revealed himself in dreams and visions. He then entered the human race, and becoming a man like us. He proved his divinity by rising from the grave and returning to heaven. He gave us a book that records these events in remarkable and trustworthy detail. As with all relationships, a relationship with God becomes self-validating. I know that God exists because I have experienced him. He is available personally to everyone who is willing to trust in him. You’ll know God is real when you ask him to be real in you; when you pray to him always; when you place your faith in him; when you ask for the forgiveness of your sins; when you read and follow his word and humble yourself before him.
      Matthew 24:13

    It’s amazing how many vague ideas this person has to go through life with. It’s also hard to challenge her because it would totally destroy her foundation of who she is... it’s too bad and it also has to do with lazy thinking and not wanting to challenge your beliefs. This is a great episode.

    This is one of the most absolute demonstrations of why and how people can be wrong and deny every single solitary reason why they're wrong and they ignore it. I admire both Tracie and Jen for this. This is all inclusive regarding every little tiny thing from medicine to beliefs. WOW!!! It's an incredibly reasonable conversation regarding emotion. I wish people that I know would watch this.

    I'd like to know who listens to this woman and says to themselves "Yeah. I want to marry her"?
    She said she's married to an atheist and her son is an atheist too but doesn't understand what atheism means?
    I mean it sounds like you could convince her of anything at all, just by adding the word god to the conversation. Astounding.

      @@carmen_says_hi it often is too harsh for most theist and they'll go into defense mode. Sometimes the best way of going about talking to a theist is trying to get them to think for themselves and make them expose their own inconsistencies and irrationality.

It's people like HER who also vote, that truly frightens me, and there's not hardly anything I really "fear" anymore. Gosh, I'll be shaking my head over this exchange for days!

      Well its a good thing to have long conversations with religious people. The longer the conversation the more time to shatter the religuos arguments. This might actually be the tipping point of someone beginning to think for themself.

    • @jedisenpei855
      @jedisenpei855 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @MTB-Fritz Yes, but if you can get past that point, then something may happen. It is important to stay respectfull to them. Don't call them stupid or anything else like that. Because they will get into a defence position. Just give them good arguments and let them think about it. It is their whole identity that you are trying to change, and their view of the world. It is not easy for them. They havn't put much thought in about death and other difficult questions, because they have been given answers about the tough subjects since they where small kidds. Answers to questions that have no answers, and they will suddenly be confronted by that. They are not stupid, just brainwashed. It is not their fault. It would have happened to you as well if you grew up in their inviroment.

      i think she's a middle aged woman. i think theists so completely believing in god they can't comprehend someone not believing in god. so many of them have the same communication breakdown where you realize it never sunk in for them what "atheist" means.
