Why Was Hogwarts Legacy Snubbed By The Game Awards?

  • Earlier this month the nominees for all 31 categories at The Game Awards were revealed. There were most definitely some surprises but one omission stood out, Hogwarts legacy. It was not nominated for a single category and I wanted to see why, so I did some digging and here's what I found. #hogwartslegacy #thegameawards #harrypotter

      Same. I think team Avalanche deserves to be recognized for taking what I would assume to be a veri intimidating franchise and bringing it into the AAA games realm. Was it perfect? No. Was it magical? Yup.

    Look, i love Harry Potter, still do, i don't give a damn about the political clusterfuck around it, i bought the game (pre-ordered it, actually) and 100% it (well, the 100% you can do in one playthrough, anyways). Based on this, here's my take on why it hasn't been nominated - it's not a particularly great game.
    The story is okay, but not outstanding and riddled with narrative inconsistencies (like the Unforgivable Curses being not really Unforgivable at all, due to the lack of a morality system), the open world challenges/collectibles don't really take advantage of the near limitless creative possibilites magic should have given the developers and become repetitive chores really fast (even more so than in other Open-World-Games) and the combat, while generally fun, can be really finicky and too hectic (especially on consoles, where you have to constantly switch between spell-wheels if you want your combos to be a bit more diverse - i assume this may work better on PCs).
    The game definitely has its strengths, the world first and foremost. Exploring it, especially Hogwarts, is so much fun and it's easy to get lost in the castle in the best way possible (and it offers a nice mix between book- and movie-style/knowledge when it comes to the design and layout), the world is alive with all it's details from the world of HP (the whole Magical Beasts part, for example), its placement on the timeline is well-chosen, frees the game of unecessary bagage and the general plot idea (a goblin rebellion) is intriguing (though, hey, maybe a sequel could be set post-Harry? That might be fun!).
    It's a solid first outing of what i personally would like to see become a franchise (maybe not of Assassin's Creed-like dimensions and longevity, but i wouldn't mind two or three more "Hogwarts"-games), but that's about it. And considering the competition this year...

      I think you make some really good points that, when talking about the game, I agree with you on. However, and maybe I need to do better on this, this video was more so way to highlight the issues with the selection process more so than the lack of nomination/recognition for Hogwarts Legacy. Looking at everything else that came out this year it was always going to be tough but even with the valid criticism you've outlined here, my only counter would be that Hogwarts Legacy still reviewed better than 2 of the nominees here, so to some degree, the games outlets felt this game was better than Lies of P (amazing game) and Starfiled (mediocre at best) and yet it got 0 nominations.

    So, I'm not on the jury (I can't find the time to review games on top of movies and TV shows), but I'll say this. I think to expect that TGA jury members to play or even review 100% of the titles that are nominated is quite the lofty task. As for why members of the jury can be allowed to vote like EW and Variety, those are two big entertainment outlets that might be grandfathered in from VGX or the Spike VGA days.

    • @PlayerVersusGame
      @PlayerVersusGame  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      100% understand that not all outlets can play/review all the games. So that being the case then maybe the jurors shouldn't get 90% of the vote imo. As for the grandfathered in jurors, never occurred to me good point!!

    While I disagree that it was worthy of being nominated in ANY category whatsoever, I do think it was a good game. The thing is, which of the nominated games truly was inferior to H.L.? Because in the categories it COULD'VE been nominated, I don't see which games it could've replaced.
    So I don't think was a sub as much as it was just simply outclassed by other games. Because sales don't mean quality. It's like the movie industry. Nobody is debating whether Avengers Endgame is better than Schindler's List or not. Because it isn't. You can absolutely love something, but still acknowledge its flaws. That's what I think happened with Hogwarts legacy with its lack of variety.

    • @PlayerVersusGame
      @PlayerVersusGame  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I get what you're saying, the game definitely has flaws for sure, but for all its flaws it still reviewed better than two of the nominees. I know review scores aren't the end all be all but that alone is a little odd. But, to me this has more to do with the jury selection process, etc.

      As for the other RPG nominees, while Sea Of Stars is far inferior in terms of budget than any of those 3 games, it is also far superior in quality, especially when we talk about the roleplay/writing aspect.

      @@13game3 Plenty of flaws.
      1. Lackluster writing, especially for side quests.
      2. Lack of variety and quantity of spells (only like 30ish spells for a AA game? Come on!)
      3. Barely any of the game happens inside Hogwarts, even of the game is called Hogwarts Legacy
      4. The illusion of choice. No choice you make in the game is ever impactful. Remember the house you had to chose in the early parts of the game? Well, doesn't matter! There is like 1 side quest per house!
      5. The gear system is designed in a way that is reminiscent of the worst Xbox 360 era menus
      6. Unforgivable curses are not really unforgiveable in-game (No proper morality system)
      7. You pretty much have to spam Revelio if you want to 100% the game.
      8. Merlin's quests are SO ANNOYING
      Shall I continue? Besides, like I said, it's a good game, but it's very far from being great, let alone GOTY or even RPG of the year. Just a disclaimer though. I'm not a hater. I could name as many good sides to the game than I did with flaws. But I'm being honest with myself.

      7/10 lmao. I bet you call starfield an 8/10. The animation and visual work I saw go into that massive castle alone are quite literally the best I have ever seen in a video game. I saw animation and environmental work that I haven't seen any game come anywhere close to accomplishing that left me wonder both how much time that 5 second animation took to make, and what game dev techniques they even used to accomplish it. It completely raised the bar on that front. That alone makes it noteworthy. The only weak point was frankly its story and its story was still a solid 7/10. Combat 8.5/10 Visuals is easy 10/10 Animations easy 10/10. Music 9/10. Game is an easy 8.5 - 9/10. It got review bombed hard by the anti-trans cancelling thing, despite the devs literally putting a trans character in the story.

    Every year the biggest pain point of the Game Awards has always been the public response to the nominees. With the info they make available to the public, the information disclosed by people like Alanah Pearce, and the hindsight of a decent amount of Game Awards, the solution seems somewhat clear to me now:
    They need to make the NOMINATION PROCESS transparent and more robust.
    Don't just hand a ballot to fill and then tally: make every publication fill a list of 1st, 2nd and 3rd game for a given category and demand that every publication has an official review for the games they nominated. Also make them clarify whether that choice was made by a single person or by several staff. Choose nominees by weight (of the 1,2,3 choice) and not by majority vote.
    In the case of eSports only allow publications with a dedicated member of staff to cast a vote. They have enough outlets to limit the vote this way and still make the votes matter.
    In the case of influencers do two rounds: one in which 20 or so people are chosen, and one in which highlights of those people are given to the voters so they can be more informed. Because unlike games, most publications don't focus or know much about these people and the possible selection is so big that the current way it's done most nominees are probably getting less than three votes. Or honestly make the influencer category be chosen by popular vote.
    Then when the awards have been given, make the data for the nominations publicly available so people can understand why the jury as a collective nominated a game or not.
    Is this a logistical challenge and a possible big expense? Definitely. Does TGA have the money and staff to afford doing this for their audience? Absolutely. And they honestly should for the sake of amassing a bigger and bigger audience.

    • @PlayerVersusGame
      @PlayerVersusGame  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think at a minimum, to be a juror, you must have reviewed to some capacity the games up for nomination. Now as for voting for winners, a non negotiable 90/10 split is a no go. The average % of jurors that reviewed the game should be the % of the vote they get. For example of only 48% of the jurors on average reviewed all games in a category then the split should be 48/52. Something along those lines.

    Well this is why all game review sites have fallen almost completely out of relevance. The editors aren't actually gamers. They are people who play games sometimes. There's a huge difference. Honestly i think this is actually amplified by the emergence of TH-cam. The best game reviewers by a long shot have their own TH-cam channels, they have no reason to be low level editors at some random "gaming" site like IGN. The level of tech journalism from "reputable" sites has crashed because they literally can't get quality editors berceuse if you are even remotely talented you would just freelance your work on TH-cam.
