- in todays video we plant out potatoes and sweetpeas..leo is back on the plot to take over! tom, his father gifts me 1 and a half whiskey barrels for a future project. I also aquire 2 Belfast sinks to be used on the allotment plots. Disaster strikes when we have a burglary on the site. 90% of the sgeds were raided. Powertools were taken. my nature trail camera was stolen, which I'm gutted about.. never mind! 😪
Bethan from @bethanskitchengarden comes to visit and we share some coffee and cake.
The next day I return and the show must go on! I plant out the remaining mangetout peas and then sow some pongo dwarf french beans. I show you round the changes at the allotment plot. The highs and lows of allotment life!

Such a lovely episode with Leo enjoying the plot, my sons at that age and now he rarely comes to the allotment but when he does I do find he doesn’t want to leave 😂 I was so gutted hearing about those break ins! But always the optimistic Linda smiling through the rain 😁

@@TheGrowUpChannel we had a plot holder lose his small tiller, he bought a new one and still left it in his shed, they come back a week later and took that and tryed to blame me and the rest of the committee, daft sod.

Awww, what a nice memory for you and your nephew. Maybe when he’s older he’ll be interested in gardening and have an allotment of his own. And even if he doesn’t, he’ll still have that memory of spending time with you. Bummer about the break-in! Upset for you all, I’m stress-eating Easter candy.

Years ago, as a teaching assistant, I ran a lunchtime gardening club...kiddies absolutely loved the process of growing. I could never understand why it wasn't a part of the curriculum.
As a a child, I adored helping my dad in his garden....it's so bonding and something you never forget. We really need to get back to basics! So good on you for encouraging your little helper!!!

Yes i feel terribly behind in some areas. I found out that i am not that well overall and then I put out my back for two weeks. We then were all hit with a couple of bouts of sickness. The last one has meant that last week was a total wash out of the first week of Easter holidays and we have all been sleeping and coughing loads. Things aren't great with my Dad either atm since his stroke in July 2022.
Due to the weather also, we haven't made much progress on the trellising upgrades.
I have been filming stuff but haven't been in the right space to start editing or do much in that area. I really admire your tenacity when it hits the pan.
Some of our highs though have been an awesome end of term choir club performance, where my father in law was able to attend live as a surprise!
Our chilli's are doing slow but well and i have some spares! They are with the spare tomatoes too. One more pot up and i will start acclimatising the tomatoes and runner beans out side in our London garden.
The runner bean that our kid brought home a few years ago from school and we have been saving seeds from, i have identified as Lady Di is about 6ft now in the utility area, with the other beans. I just need to install the little hooks into the trellis as I have increased the amount of beans this year and want to improve how it travels up to the poles and spread out.
Very pleased with our carrot germination and the inter row of spring onions have come up in the raised cold frame.
Our early main crop potatoes are showing now and gutted i missed out on doing first earlies this year. Finger's crossed i can get another early determinate in there after?
Cool crops are doing well despite the wind and rain. I managed to get into the garden today as our over wintered perpetual spinach has got out of hand and came in with a bucket full for dinner and freezing.
Makes a change to eating the dwarf green curled kale over winter, which is now flowering. We had some of the non flowering florets and made spiced kale crisps. Glad to be planting out the first of four of this years new kale. Will be using the old kale stems as stakes as i want to save the seeds before topping and stripping off. Those kale plants were good to us last year and this year so far.
Yes I too have some spare courgettes! lol
The school's PTA are a bit clique and it was a struggle trying to donate and sell my plants for the school last year, so i am thinking like i did last year of another way to sell the plants and maybe get a small % back for us, since i am unable to work and the rest for the school as the fertilzer, compost, lighting etc does add up. Not sure how much to sell a ready to plant tomato? I know last year in B&Q it was £3.50 for the small ones and £6.50 for the larger ones that we have? Does organic add any more to the price?
Was also thinking of selling our sedum and aloe vera babies for £1 each, with say, 75p to the school charity? I don't have many of each and we aren't talking big amounts of plants or big prices but i think that is fair for London? I can also make some nut free cupcakes? I think it is ok to put up a table on our drive to sell stuff?
As for those buggers that came to the allotment, it's a shame they didn't slip on their arse and fall on your dibber! You have such a great community there and that is why it is harder to have these nice things like that here in London.

P.s. Danny, i also think us as keen gardeners always put our own pressures of priority on things. Like i keep reminding myself (apart from "just keep swimming" is that it is ok to fall behind on some things.) It is still early doors, so plenty of time to pick up on things and what doesn't get done, doesn't get done. like the weather, it doesn't always go to plan.
Our last frost date is/was mid March and we aren't ready yet to plant out our main summer crops. Mind you, we also air caution to wind and storms during the "April showers".
It's not a sprint or a marathon, it's a new journey into the new year.
I now fancy a marathon, so much better than a snickers! lol

The agitation of spring is normal for us gardeners, but the current planetary positioning may cause some to feel more agitated than normal.

Hi Leo!!!! So sorry someone intruded in your space. I had someone come on my property and brake into my sheds and stole half and destroyed the other half of my stuff a couple years back. I know how it feels for this to be done to you. I hope they catch them. But your gardens are looking amazing and I am super jealous of them.

Ah hello Leo, so lovely to have a young helper on the plot with you Danny. I hope that when my grandaughter (due August this year whoop whoop!) is old enough, I can get her involved with growing in my garden. So excited to share with the next generation. Her dad (my son) loves his house plants as they haven't had a proper garden yet, so very much looking forward to sharing my time outside with them all.

Yup, I'm feeling a bit behind as rain has stopped game here...but we did start on Saturday....about a week off target (the groundhog lied). The only reason it matters really is that I'm drown with plant starts inside, and need them out so I can start tomatoes.

Hi mate, sorry for you and the other plot holders losses, we had the same trouble last year in our area and silly me left my brand new extendable chainsaw in my shed over night and 5 gallon Jerry can and went, I had the same thoughts and feelings as yourself and the others, but don’t let the bastards get you down it’s your feel good place, and the good feelings will return soon. Chin up and carry on, things are replaceable, but the place you love will always be there for you. ❤️

What you could do Danny is make a raise bed that could have a tool box that could be stored under it or inside it with a hidden door.

As you say, leaving the shed door open would stop damage to the door! I have a similar attitude with modern cars with their fancy keys and locks. Leave it unlocked then they won't smash a window to see what is in the boot etc!

Sorry to hear your news. Our plot was hit 2yrs ago, but nothing was stolen….they chose to just rip off the shed locks from about 60% of the plots 🤬 I’m feeling really behind too, I treated myself to a polytunnel just before Xmas (10 ft x 15ft) so been busy getting that built, cover left to go 🎉

We have a small amount of theft and vandalism in our community garden plots.
Mostly entitled people who grocery shop through the plots when they are not needy people.
I adapt by never having items that I would be heartbroken for more than a couple minutes if taken from my garden.
Also I built the "friendly fortress" to surround my plot. Difficult to get in when locked. Zero thefts in many years.
On the positive side, our community gardens have improved in recent years in so many ways.
They are more tidy, people are sharing advice and produce.
.Some plots are showing innovations ( vertical gardening, leaf mold, Hügelkultur, upcycling, art and more) that inspire others,
We also have a couple people who assist with watering, weeding, etc when someone is unable ( holidays, injury, surgery, etc)
BTW Home Insurance may cover losses.

I used a rape alarm keyring oh my Chateau which saved my stuff when it was activated it was very loud and next time they done the sheds they left mine alone you just attach it to the door and the door frame so when they pull the door open it pulls the keyring out the very effective good luck mate great videos

Oooh that white feather hosta!!! I already have too many hostas, but that one is on the list. Lots of jobs done with Leo's expert help 👍 still trying to get my nephew to finish digging the pond. Love the barrels.

Did my french beans today and some gigantes.. I will do my runners tomorrow in my container. They will be going in the kitchen. Oh no, I was still clearing up after seed sowing and missed the live. I felt like that too. A slight panic.

I think these people who break into allotments are the low of the low…..most people with allotments are not wealthy people and as you say they start out with an interest which grows into a marvellous hobby. What is good in this situation you are able to get together and talk

Wow Leo has got so grown up. He is a natural presenter isnt he Danny, credit to him for filling his uncles boots with the camera and tour. So sorry about the break ins, those type of people are opportunists who were rared to no repect other peoples possessions. Chin up to you all,and let it be in the past and learn from it re as you say leave nothing there. I dont after a shovel was taken from my plot once. It's no fun having someone take things that don't belong to them. If anyone marked their tools, put out notices to local pawn shops. A musician friend had his guitar taken and fortunately it was quite unique enough someone spotted it.
Backed up? Yes, but I decided to go with the flow and let my garden fill up as soon as I can plant directly.

Hey Danny… the Wanborough allotment site (in N Wiltshire) got broken into on Friday night (5 April).. I don’t lock my shed and I don’t store tools in the shed. They took 2 wooden chairs (Which I got free off FB marketplace).. but not content with that they then destroyed a lot at the allotment.. all my bean arches bent and pulled out and I was part way through building a polytunnel that was pulled down… others on the site were affected and they also unplumbed, emptied and stole all the water troughs that feed mains water to the site….. so … as you say… not targeted.. but I acutely understand how you feel. In our brains we logically know this happens at allotments all over the country - it is just after putting your heart, soul, love and time into your allotment it is a bitter pill to swallow…

I think your nephew is just the cutest thing. I live in New Mexico in the U.S. I do have a gardening question have you ever tired to sow carrots in what is called the cornstarch method, you put your seeds in a small plastic bag mix with some cornstarch and water to make a thick slurry and cut off a corner of the plastic bag and squirt them out in a prepared row. I was wondering your thoughts on this method.

There's very little security around most Allotments and nothing more than an open field so I'd never keep anything expensive
At an Allotment if I had one as crime is just getting worse sadly.

on occasion i did leave tools on my plot overnight, but i had a bit of a false floor in my shed. everything was always hidden with a bit of old carpet over the top. i found it was pointless using locks. they only ever resulted in damage......................brian

I'm way behind with everything and it's simply to plant stuff out and causing a back log in my Greenhouse.
This rain has been a nightmare . I usually have more done by now too. Tomorrow I am determined to do a few hrs at the plot. I can't over do the ribs. So they tell me when to go home lol

Oh no not at all. But bush beans here are sown now. Grown on in the polytunnel and then planted out. Runner beans probably next week, week after. I also start some off in a 30 litre bucked inside the tunnel with bamboo. To have an early harvest. Haha! I didn't even know leo did that until I edited 🤣

I did an old barrel as a fishpond and the black stuff painted inside/burned killed them. If you Google online it says its toxic for fish and I've now lined it. Will that affect your plants?
I wasn't planning fish.. but if I did I'd probably line it.. i shall look into whether it would affect the plants. I've tested the water since reading this and the ph was neutral. Hmm..
