I was in Laconia for bike week 2019. Had an issue with my '17 Limited. Had no idea John would be the one looking at my bike. Great guy, took care of me really quickly and was awesome to talk with. I just wanted to thank you, John, for being there and taking care of my situation. Many thanks brother! Wish you great success in all you do! Greg
Just lived the oil transfer issue on my FLHTK 2019. In just about 500 miles, it had transferred about a quart of Formula 80W oil. Nothing broken, no catastrophic failures. When I became aware of the issue, I was on a road trip. Stopped at O’Tools Wurtsboro NY where a very friendly tech advisor understood exactly what was happening. Offered to repair in next few hours as they had the fix kit in stock but I was limited in time. Quick solution was to empty excess in an aluminium cooking pan from the derby cover and refill trans at hotel. Upon return home, went to my dealer who knew of the issue at hand. They had the bulletin notice and the repair kit to resolve. A couple hour later bike was fixed. 750 miles later, all is good and the oil level hasn’t dropped one drop. Conclusion, their is a fix and it works well. Just a note to say both dealers assured me it’s not a recall as not every bike will have this issue. You can have 100 bikes built in a row and only a few could have this issue, hence why it’s not a recall but a service bulletin I was told. Hey, sh*t happens.
@@jmc2567 Hey, it’s part of the Harley experience ! How else would they get you to visit the showroom ? In this perfect world where no other brands of motorcycles have recalls or service issues, it leaves Harley to stand out from the rest. The joy and pleasure a Harley provides is far outweighed with the technical issues that occur with Harley . Own one and find out. Big hello from Canada.
John, I’ve been a Motorcycle owner for over fifty years. Been tinkering with anything mechanical from trains, planes and automobiles for just a little longer. I do not watch many videos from people giving mechanical advice, as I have found many to be misinformed! I do really appreciate you taking the time to produce these straight forward, knowledgeable, and very informative videos! I’ve enjoyed your channel. Thank you!
Still driving my '17 Ultra Limited 3 years down the road and 50K miles later. Runs like a charm and never had a single issue with it. Took it in this spring and bumped it up to the 128CI with a Woods cam and she outruns most I've come across. We'll see how she's doing another 3 years down the road.
2017 SGS - Mine has a Stage IV, oil cooled. My dealer put in the updated oil pump as a part of the Stage IV at no additional cost. Just had my 15k service done... 5k miles on the Stage IV, no issues. Love the bike.
I just made an appointment with the Harley dealership about 12 hours ago to have my rocker box gasket replaced under warranty. And I’m just watching your video now, kind of ironic. Thanks for the info!👍🍺 heritage classic 2020 114
I have an 18 Road Glide Special w/ M8, Love it and have had zero issues, right at 8500 miles, in 10 months. Only Harley I've purchased new, Best Harley I've ever owned. Great Video, Keep On Keepin On.
jim wortham well other people have posted problems before their first 1,000 miles. If there is a defect that is going to cause fluid transfer he would have seen it by now
Its not a problem for the guy getting paid to fix it,but to the guy thats shelled out tens of thousands of dollars of hard earned money and just wants to ride and enjoy his new bike it,s a problem, taking it to shop, explaining it,getting told someone's probably overfill it(even tho they know no one has over filled it)getting it drained,re filled, then riding round going nowhere for 1000 miles, having to go back to shop 1-2 months later about same problem, explaining it again, leaving bike there, getting someone pick you up/drop you back at shop to pick up bike, missing out on riding time,or if you were,t even gonna be riding it,it should be sitting at home not in the shop, you don,t notice it as a hassle/problem because you fix your own bike and don't have to go thru this process. All Harleys new bikes are advertised as wow, evolutionary, brand new design, revolutionary, smooth, powerful, etc, etc, etc, etc, then you have a problem and gotta fk around to get it sorted.maybe the bike shops should come to your house, pick up bike, fix it,provide a courtesy bike, and drop your bike back free of charge, haha, then they would be complaining,it,s just another hassle (riders) don't need, especially at the price a Harley costs. Best wishes to you all.from,Auckland,New Zealand.Ride Safe,Ride free.
I've been an HD tech for a long time , 35 plus years this is just the latest "public freak out " over just everyday minor things .Well done ,keep up the good work
Hey john, have a twin cooled 2017 ultra limited m8 with stage 1 and 2.I too had sumping problem at around 12,500 miles(loss of power).took to dealership to fix, they found scoring in jugs and replaced jugs and pistons and oil pump.its not just a problem with stage 4 motors.bike runs great since fixed.love the bike!Harleys forever!!!!!!
Appreciate your time & energy in putting out the vids, John. After a '93 1100 Shadow, '12 Triumph Thunderbird 1600, I picked up my first HD - an '18 M8 107 FLTRU on 4/30/18. I put the 4" Rineharts on last month, and In 2 weeks she's going in for 5k service / HD S2 Tq cam, / high flow air cleaner & tuner. I've been watching the fluids since seeing your (and others' ) vids. No issues thus far. Thanks again & keep them coming!
The triumph 1600 t bird is the nicest bike and most comfortable ive ever ridden. 17000 miles on it 2011 and truely like new, no rust and great quality finish. Theyre a steal and my mate paid £5500 secondhand. HD evo money and thats not mint. I do however prefer these to later motors but time and mileage and the biker telephone will come out with long term truth
Follow up on the '18 FLTRU... 47k miles now, did end up with some fluid transfer after... 10-15k I believe. They did the crank breather update which helped mine. Great bike with minimal issues over these few years. Triumph 1600 was a fantastic bike with a lot of character. Conversation bike at every stop... "I used to have a..." kind of bike. The FLTRU has been WAY more comfortable though with the heated hammock & rider backrest, heated grips, etc. She's sitting in the front yard with a sale sign on her as I don't ride as much anymore (work + farm life). I do not like the trajectory of the newer bikes (digital dash etc) and will likely go old school kickover for the next one, for short hops.
That was one of the first things that I learned back when I was tooling around on my 73 Shovelhead Stroker, was to keep oil to the bottom of the clutch basket gear, I had a closed primary case.
Thanks you for posting this video. I have a 2017 Road Glide Special with a Stage 3 Upgrade, I have put over 6K miles, no issues whatsoever. I drive the bike every single day year round. Harley did an awesome job with the M8 I’m very happy.
I'm actually excited about the M 8, I'm looking forward to having one, just got my RoadKing fully serviced , now ,back to Texas from Charlotte NC, a good ride
I have a 2017 Road glide ultra. It has sumped 3 times already. Twice as stock 107, once as 107 stage 4. I hope that with new short block and updated oil pump cover this issue will finally get resolved.
Hey John, great video. I tend to watch Matt's dealer show videos every year and he mentioned you. No idea who you were.... I laughed out loud multiple times watching your videos. Plus I learned what "sumping" is. I know my tech would always roll his eyes if I started a conversation with "I saw this on the internet". I trust my tech with my life since yes I am on two wheels so he would always take the time to explain what was really going on and take good care of me. Anyway you seem like a very trustworthy person which is high praise. Good job, you have a new subscriber!
I have a 2019 streetglide 107 no issues yet. I have 15000 miles on it . took it from az to ny this summer 7100 mi round trip. No problems. I change the oil every 3000 miles. I use mobile 20 - 50 synthetic. Have use it on my other bikes. 78000 on 2011 and 76000 on 2016 no issues. Thanks for an informational video. Hank in mesa AZ
Only because I love this channel did I just set through a 5 minute ad right in the middle of this video that I could’ve skipped. John you the man. Also I’m test riding the 2018 street bob Friday!!!!!!!
I had the oil transfer issue shortly after purchasing my new FLHTK Ultra 2019. The problem was identified in the first 4000 miles and fixed under warranty just like John described. 4 years and 25,000 miles later I want to report I haven’t had any issues since the fix and both oil levels are always right on level.
Just bought a 2019 Street Glide. Originally went to the dealer to test a 2016 SGS, nice but then asked to take out a M8 to compare. I was sold on the 2019 SG before the ride was halfway through.
Thanks for the video. I was one of the lucky ones to have an oil pump failure. The first question they asked if I have a stage four done. No it's stock except for slip ons. 2017 ultra limited. The problem occurred at 12k miles. I pulled in on Sunday afternoon and had my bike back Monday night
I have a question. It gets hot in Albuquerque sometimes, and the M8 engine kicks off a cylinder to conserve heat when the engine gets too hot, generally when the motor gets hot i see oil start to leak out of the air cleaner which i'm not sure is normal, or if it was occurring regardless or if there's a problem i'm pretty sure its just that there was a tiny bit too much oil in the pan and it just sprayed through into the cleaner but i'm just curious, this has happened on my '18 Fat Bob, as well as my Dad's '17 Street Glide Special
Under warrantee I have had the headlight replaced, rear head gasket replaced, clutch recall fixed, voltage regulator replaced and the vent put in the transmission to stop the fluid migration and the levers for the faring doors replaced. I put a lot of miles on, love the engine, but really glad for the no questions asked warrantee.
Well just FYI I had a 2018 road king special that had the transfer issue. I heard about the problem from the H-D forums so I decided to check mine. I had 480 miles on the bike at the time and barely had any fluid on the tip of the dipstick. Took it to the dealer and of course they told me what you said and to drive it for 1000 miles and recheck. So I was going to do my 1000 miles service so that was 520 since last checked the tranny fluid. So I decided to check all the fluids before servicing. The transmission dipstick was completely dry. Dealer came and picked up the bike and after they looked it over and measured the ounces they told me it actually transferred 11 or 15 ounces in that 520 miles. So pretty bad I think. Of course the MOCO was stalling and they didnt want to fix it. So the dealer set all my fluids where they were supposed to be and gave me the 1000 mile service for free. Told me to keep riding it and checking the fluids regularly and adjust when needed. So I’m thinking I can’t go on long rides like I want to because every 400-500 miles I would have to drain and refill the primary and transmission until the MOCO decides to fix it if ever. So I was mad enough and tired of it and knew not all bikes were affected. So I took a chance and traded that bike at another Harley dealership on a new road glide ultra. It now has 2500 miles and not a single ounce has been transferred with this bike. I think I lucked out. But I believe the MOCO has tolerance issues with several of these bikes maybe just between a certain time frame at the factory. The new seals I’ve heard of being replaced didn’t work for anyone. Harley hasn’t replaced any transmissions yet that I’ve heard of. Probably why you see so many 2017 and 2018 bikes with very low mileage have already been traded back in or for sale. Sorry for the long comment.
Thats extremely hard to do.....as the used bikes most people want are the ones where someone bought a Harley but didnt really ride it...thats the "sweet spot" with Harleys...guys who think they can buy a Harley and it will suddenly make them "cool" so you can get a barely used bike at a huge discount...and this is a HUGE market. IF the issue is affecting less than 1 percent, as John stated, then its also only affecting 1% of the used/traded in market also...well maybe more if there was a predominant amount traded in due to the issue. IF you have an honest dealer, there should be a maintenance history available for the bike if it was serviced by Harley and was turned down warranty coverage (if you are getting it from a dealer). But even so, if you get one that has this seepage issue, its still hardly a catastrophic type issue, provided you check your fluids every 1000 miles or so?? You are saying you wouldnt take a long trip because of it?? I dont understand why? If I was on a 1000 mile trip, I absolutely would be checking my fluids every 2-3 gas stops, and if any were significantly low I would be adding more fluid? Granted, if its the primary that is low, I cant really check that, but if I know the issue is primary fluid seaping into transmission (the issue is opposite of this) I would then see additional fluid in the transmission and would know that there could be an issue. None of these problems would even remotely change the way I ride as none are going to "blowup" my motor as long as I do routine maintenance and keep an eye on things as I always do anyhow.....the issue is being somewhat overblown because of the internet. You can make 10,000 perfect motors but if 1 of them has issues, thats the one that you will see mentioned in every motorcycle forum on the planet....int he big picture this is nowhere near as bad as people are stating. Please dont take this post as a "dig" brother...its not meant that way...and congrats on your new bike.
RedRider0151 guess you missed the part where I said every 400-500 miles I would have to do the fluid changes in the transmission and primary. Because the transmission transferred 11-15 ounces in 520 miles. For one that will get expensive. Also who wants to be bothered with trying to do a roadside fluid change while out. Also I do my own services so I wouldn’t stop into another Harley dealer a pay them what they want for service work that’s big money. If you would be happy having this problem and making payment on in my case a brand new $24,000.00 bike than by all means you go for it. I’ve had other new Harley’s that didn’t have any problems and that’s the way I like it. But if you want to spend all that money on a bike and have to go through all that hassle then you do it it’s your life and your money do it how you see fit.
have a 2018 road glide ultra with 38,000kms. took across Canada last year no issues at all ran perfect, longest day 1120 kms at 120kph avg. speed. I did have the oil pump upgraded right after I bought it as my riding bud had issues with his 2017....great bike, great motor
Sorry John I have a 2019 street glide. Just did my 1k service and discovered that my transmission was almost dry maybe 8 to 10 oz of fluid in it. Removed the derby cover and oil was pouring out. To say the least it is very upsetting.
Please get the new vent hose that Harley will install as a warranty item. My 2019 RK Special had it done at 650 miles and now I'm on 6700 miles with no transfer. These are now installed on all touring models after a May 2019 build date. It's a small vent hose that's installed on the back side of the primary...ride on
Got a question for you. Ever had a problem with the shift sensor or speedo sensor on a roadster causing an engine light, foul running, no speedo, and no gear indicator, tach still works. My current fix has been to shift up and down a couple of times before starting and this has solved the issue.
Great video John. I bought my 2019 FLTRX on 4/6/19 had the 1000 mile service done at dealership at 991 miles and I verified oil levels before leaving dealership and all was good. Today 5/9/19 at 1850 miles checked transmission dipstick and it was dry. Added 10 ounces to bring to halfway mark on dipstick. Back to dealership tomorrow. I had hoped they would have this fixed by 2019 models. My bikes build date was 3/19/19 so it appears Harley Davidson has done nothing to fix this. Too bad as otherwise it's a great motorcycle.
Same here on my 2019 Road King Special. My dealer tells me they have a fix. I told him why would anything have to be fixed. This motor is plagued with problems. My bike now sits in the garage and I'm back riding my to other Twin Cam 110s...sad news
I personally asked John most of these questions myself back in April when I was considering trading my old Triumph for a new FLHRXS. I got the same answers privately from him as hes giving you guys here. Everyones experiences are different, but my bike has been trouble free so far, and I personally couldn't be happier switching from the Speed Triple to the Harley. At the end of the day, thats what warranty is for :) Thanks for the video, John!
I'm and old time Harley guy but after many problems with bikes and Harley I traded my Street Glide for a Triumph Storm, I'll never go back to that junk.
Enjoyed this video. I purchased a 2017 FLTRU in Sep. 17 have 25K. Have not had any problems. Have a friend bought a 2018 FLTRU and has had issues. It was stock 107 and he had them put the stage 4 kit in it. First he had a bad crank sensor. Then the oil pump problem you talked about loosing power. They fixed all with warranty. Now has has a valve spring break and they are trying to figure why all the problems. Probably going to put in anew engine.
John. You’re the man. Thank you for putting this video out. I’m going to refer people to it. I get the oil pump question a lot and the oil transfer question a lot. People don’t realize that even if there is a little oil transfer from the transmission to the primary that it’s such a small amount that it won’t do anything. Especially if you’re servicing your bike according to the intervals specified by H-D. The bikes that do have a problem represent less than 1% of the M8s on the road. I look forward to seeing you at the dealer show this year. I LOVE MY Milwaukee 8. Sell that sporty and get one!
Hey John and Matt, great video John! Two questions for both of you. 1) will you be covering the show live like last year? Apparently it will be interesting :-) and 2) I have done 16'000 miles with my 2017 M8 RKS in a year and am wondering if it is worth doing a stage 2 cam upgrade (for torque as I like torque) at 20'000 and if I should also upgrade the clutch basket at the same time?
I’m will not be doing a live feed, and the torque cam question should be coming up in a video soon. It’s a lot of info to type! It’s not as simple as yay or nay!
Hey - that's my bike!! I have #855 of the 115th Anniversary Heritage Softail. Absolutely LOVE IT!!!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts - always appreciated 😁
Sorry to say being a Harley owner myself on my 4th... that Harley Fumble the Ball on this M8 engine...seeing how there sales have are down, this engine should have been...Bullet Proof...and as for Warranty , who wants there new bike in the shop all the time, it takes the trusting of the bike wright out the window...that's part of the reason why you purchase a new bike...Go Figure
Well I'll add my 2 cents. Had a trans primary transfer. ..brought it to one dealer said that the whining noise was from a backlash gear..even tho I ck the trans dipstick... did a complete fluid service..road 200 miles..drained trans fluid in a measuring cup..14 oz...okay call me crazy but that's a little more than there 5oz. acceptable range line..then they did a reservice. Same scenario..got tired of it..went back to Indian..no issues..2nd one..all good..well made!!..by the way I have 92' evo 37k ..no problems with transfer..go figure
I have a 2019 Freewheeler with the M-8 engine. You are talking out of your ass. The M- 8 is the finest engine ever to go on a Harley. I run the shit out of mine and not a drop of oil anywhere. !
Just did a 6K trip on my Street Glide Special. Went to Sturgis, Montana, and Wyoming camping and fishing too. No trouble except a spring in the hand grip for the clutch went south and I couldn't start my bike in gear even with the clutch pulled in. fixed at the dealership on warranty and good to go. Love this bike and when the speed limit went to 80 Yeah I cruised at 90. It was smooth sailing and the ride was great. planning for next year now...
Agreed. You might check out Kevin, at MCRIDER. He puts out great MC 101 that can be a very good technique reminder for experienced riders. I have been riding for a solid 42 years...we all can develop bad habits.. Cheers! Rubber on the bottom
I have a 2002 Softail Duece withTC88 that I bought new in 2001 that has the stage one set-up and I beat the crap out of it every time I take it out of my Garage and I can say that its NEVER broken down Never gone back to the dealer to take care of anything under the extended warranty that I bought for it at the dealer ... what a waist that was. lol. The old TC88,96,103&107 I'd take one any day over the M8.. well till they get the Bugs out of it anyways. Good Job on the video as always John.
Just stumbled across your channel and as a old scooter tramp(50yrs) I think this is one of the best i;ve seen on yt, Great training visuals and explanations on the bikes. Just like sitting down with my bro, drinking a beer and bsing. I'm starting a marathon watching today. Thx.
As someone who rebuilds small and big blocks and who has owned an EVO, sold it years back and am now researching HD's and Indians, let me tell you it is honest to goodness stuff like this that you put out that does more to educate the layman than anything else could. You certainly are not going to hear any of this from the salesman. Your honest and integrity is much appreciated.
Yeah that. Dealers are between a rock and a hard place: they have to kiss the consumers ass (which they see 2 or 3 times ) and then they have to kiss hd`s ass at least once a month. The dealers have to keep hd happy or they don`t get any bikes. hd are a/holes. I have bought 6 new hd`s ,in my time, and now have a used `90 Springer. Just don`t like the way they cheapen up on bearings. I.E.: cam, crank, primary bearings. WTF??
I've had it in for service at least 4 * but they won't acknowledge that the service is for heat concerns in addition to adding a different seat or putting on side bags or the noise that continues coming from the rear brake area. Which hasn't been corrected yet either.
@@REDMAN298 press fit cranks, time bomb timing chains. Junk designed to last just long enough. Not as bad as VW got for planned obsolescence, but it's BS
@@VndNvwYvvSvv :let`s not even start on the automatic primary chain adjuster. Had one hold the chain so tight that the clutch basket teeth cut into the inner primary. Got out of that bike fast. Shoved it back into the dealer`s hands by trading it.
Love all bikes, started on an ‘85 xl80s, moved to a ‘96 xv535 virago, to a ‘14 ninja 300, and a ‘17 z125. Ridden other bikes too, One of my favorites being a ‘16 victory high ball, modded out to be so fast my ass about slid off the seat in first gear. Talk about torque... went from really desiring a 765 street triple to a z900, z900rs, scout, to a Stryker... but I’m about 95% sure I’m committed to a new softail Low Rider. I don’t like forward controls, the handle bars are just like my old virago (and I loved em) and the bike as a whole is about the sexiest thing I’ve seen. I didn’t think I’d ever pull the trigger on one but It’s about time I bite that bullet and get on an HD. Appreciate the great, informative video!
Just shared this in a huge Road Glide forum where the Milwaukee 8 seems to get these hyped up “horror” stories about the sumping issue. I have 7,000 miles on mine so far, problem free. And a few of my friends have M8 bikes and love theirs as well. I am very impressed with the new engine and have no regrets at all from trading in a twin cam bike for it. Great video 🤘
Dude I love your freaking facial expressions... classic. I've had my M8 for a little over a month now and loving every minute. Also a side note I actually had never heard of any of these problems and I saw the video title and got slightly nervous then watched the video and my conclusion is the interwebs will be the interwebs thanks for the info bud much appreciated.
My cousin has a 117 Milwaukee 8 stage 4 and he's already lost 3 engines (Harley covered it under warranty), but it's definitely an issue. I'm referring to the original oil pump issues. The 2nd and 3rd time it happened with the updated pump. Apparently, this doesn't happen as much with the 114's. FYI I have the first year 2014 street glide special and although little things have happened, loose stuff...etc, nothing major has been an issue. Although not buying the first year of anything is a great rule of thumb, I lucked out. Had it for 6 years now, ride all the time. got 34k on it. Oddly, I thought I'd have all the extras and have it set the way I like it, but it's a money pit for eBay and craigslist. There's always something new that I want for it... I believe it'll never stop! Ride safe and don't forget to wear a mask! Make your mom proud!
My mate just got his M8 back after the new oil pump upgrade it's stage 3 it is sumping again after 2 days riding .. looking like harley is going to give him a 2019 engine under warranty to fix the problem
Bought my first HD last November - 2017 Ultra Limited. 9k miles so far and nothing but grins. I just did a Stage 1 myself with the SEPST, ventilator ac, and a set of Cobra 909 pipes. Left the cat in place. Nice little bump in power and great intake sound now. There is very little about this bike I don’t love.
John, can you make a video discussing the differences of the new water pump & plumbing that was installed on my 2015 Ultra limited compared to the old pump. Thanks
nicely done. refreshing to hear from a guy that actually wrenches on the bikes. I remember all the negative hype about the 96" motor mine has performed flawlessly since 2007.
Yes, I would also like to see an update and more info on the latest primary rubber hose vent fix the moco came out with, I heard all Hyd clutch models have it from assembly now
Best Harley ever, no primary , water cooled no vibration . It was a red head step child. Smooth, powerful but it had one problem. It did not sound like a Harley. Developed by Porsche, it was no crotch rocket but it was a definite Improvement on the basic design.....
@@jackcook4772 I had a v-rod and I loved it (I have a gen 2 vmax now, so you really don't need to talk to me about performance). "Improvement" however is a subjective take on it. It very much feels "clinical" when compared to a more traditional Harley and it's no faster than modern M8's that are designed to perform. The only real advantage it had in the performance world was that it was water cooled and didn't use pushrods, but in reality who's riding these bikes to beat 600 super sports off the line? A Harley is fast enough to hot rod around and get you down the road, but a more traditional Harley is a thousand times cooler even if it takes it a little bit longer to do it. It's not all about performance, and people ALWAYS go right there when talking about how Harley's "suck". Well, mister, maybe they aren't for you? I'm sure people sell stuff that is. People need to learn where their opinion ends and objectivity begins.
I have a 2009 flh and you mention that HD trans are rarely opened and not something problematic. I have had my 6th gear bearing go and when i was at the dealer another guy had to rebuild his. I bought mine used the other guy it was new. Was it just bad luck from both bikes or like i was told first generation 6th speed and it could come back again as an issue ? 54000 milles on the bike compensator has been changed also. Anything else major i can expect ? I love the bike why trade it in unless i am looking at big repairs in the near future. Thanks John
Rains like that in South Louisiana. Matt Laidlaw did a video with one of his employees who had an issue with the oil pump. Went through the issue and what was done to fix it
John, My 2017 Ultra Limited actually had this oil pump problem. Yes, it has a stage 3 kit installed. The bike started loosing power with less than 4000 miles on it. I was on a road trip when this occured, so that was a bummer. Anyway it was all covered under warranted and the dealer ended up replacing the entire short block on the bike. I've put about 1000 miles on it since this happened and all seems well.
I got a used 2008 Suzuki C90T Boulevard! 9600 miles on it $4200 Wanted a HD. For a 90 hp plus HD used $9K was the best I could find . I love HD, but there not twice the price of a Rice Burner. A 2008 Goldwing was $7.5-8k 1836 cc Something is wrong with HD.... The new Indian bikes The big hogs.... Front tire was $500 plus installation. Buy a new Rice Burner, Save tons of money, and end up with the better ride over all.
I used to own a Suzuki Boulevard C50. Great bike. Nothing bad to say. However, if anyone thinks they are as nice as the bike they clone Heritage Softail, then they are fooling themselves. I will also say, I find used HDs are relatively more costly than a new one.
Tena Heffernan my brother in law has a 2008 HD Heritage soft tail. He bought it new. You would think he would ride it a lot. MAYBE twice a year, were same age.. he’s in better shape then me. I ride his once ever ever three weeks or so. I ride my Suzuki 1500 three times a week or more. The HD is stronger over all. I’m used to the feel of mine. His is ok but he never washes it.. that’s what I’m for I guess.lol. I’m addicted to riding. I love a cool crisp sun up on a Sunday morning. I ride to either Galveston island or downtown Houston. See everything with no traffic... I ride to lake Charles Louisiana to gamble. Texas is scared of gambling and pot. The religious would lose a lot of free money if they legalized fun in Texas. I got my first bike license at 15 for a Honda XL 100 In 1976..👁👁
Just a comment on the new bikes, the problem is that when a customer takes their $32000 motorcycle to a dealer with what they feel is a problem, and the dealer says “that’s normal, it isn’t a problem we’re aware of”, then they talk to others who have the same problem. Low and behold several months later Harley-Davidson admits it and comes up with a fix. I personally know a guy with the leaky valve seat problem, and it took months to get it fixed, and this was on a brand new bike. Not everyone is an HD mechanic, most of us have to rely on our dealership for answers and when those answers are lies, it gets very frustrating!!!
Hi John, Are you aware of a sumping problem on the M8 117 CVO motors. I am hearing that a significant number of engines and oil pumps have been replaced. apparently the pump pumps oil into the engine that then drain in the crank case and does not return to the oil pan.. this causes an overheat in the top end after time or hard riding.
17 road glide motor replaced, sumping issues at 25,000. I laugh everytime I hear somebody act like this wasn't a issue before they've changed oil pumps like 4 times since 2017.
I haven't had any trouble with mine yet , I took off from St Peter IL and in a day and a half ended up in Roswell NM. Great ride no complaints. (2017 Ultra Limited)
I've bougt a brand new M8 SGS 114" bj 2019 , in which "the oil transfer issue" occured ( and another member of our HD club has bought last year a M8 RK 107" bj 2018 , which is infected with that same "issue" as well .) ...so please don't try to convince us that it is just "rare" , because it is not. Both of the bikes are under warrenty , and get an approved "fix" at the dealer ( but it is no guarantee that it will solve the problem for 100% ) , So if it does , I'll let you know here .
Had my 2019 RK Special transfer fixed and after 6k miles no transfer. As a matter of fact all new builds as of 5/19 has this installed from the factory. Only thing my bike is doing now is blowing blue smoke now at start up....shit motor. Thank goodness I still have my twin cam bikes in the barn.
@@TheHarleyTech I'm still thinking of getting it but going to wait a little longer for that move that test ride got me I actually fell in love with it and the wife is on board for me to get it. I'm actually glad to hear that that's the bike you got. 😎👌🏽
Thanks for info! Now @ 17,000 on my 2017 FLHXS, not even one problem... I had 2016 FXDLS w110”, & no problems either in 11,000 miles. Ride it like you stole it!
Appreciate the knowledge. They are on the 5th generation of oil pump for stake 4. Sumping is huge problem here in Cali. 3 friends have had there motors rebuilt already. Not the twin cooled motor. My dealer has 6 bikes in there shop right now that are blown.
Just spend a few hours at HD dealer today, told them i was going to check out Indian tomorrow. I like the HD stuff, I guess it's the old school in me but I never once had a problem with my Honda 1800vtx
Got 1600 miles on my M8 and I love it. The hard candy chameleon flake had me hooked at first sight. Love your channel thanks for all the great info you provide!
John, one of your best videos to date brother. Use of visual aides added a lot. Thanks and keep it coming. I have a 2013 CVO Roadglide and a 2018 Slim with a stage 4 kit. Quite a bite a difference in the feel between the two motors. Still love my twin cam. The 8 is so smooth. Good info in this video... now I know a few things to look for on my Slim. What bike are you going to get with the M8 ?
Stage 4 anything always has problems we had a stage 4 sporty that we couldnt sell cuz it was always breaking down. Stage 1 or stage 2 is as far as i would ever go on my tc96
John I love my heritage M8 114 anniversary bike. I did have the rocker and oil line at the heads leak. Capital Harley in Lansing Michigan where I bought the bike warrantied it no problem. Been fine since.
I've been wrenching on Milwaukee iron for 40yrs and WAS a factory certified technician. When the twin cam came out, I hung it up, because I saw nothing but misery and disappointment ahead for owners and mechanics alike. I've run into a lot of shitheads who thought they were mechanics, but few who really know their shit. This guy seems to be the exception, as he appears to be highly knowledgeable and conscientious about his work. I wouldn't hesitate to let this guy put his hands on any of my machines. Damned good video.
I have a 17 road king with the m8 and I love it. If you get the chance to own one don't pass it up. They are awesome motors. Thanks for the knowledge John!
I just discovered your Channel by accident today and I love it! I'm really not a Harley guy at all, but I find your videos really interesting. Some times your content applies to the type of bikes I like to wrench on. Cheers!
I put the 128 stage four in my 18 RGS in 2020. This would come with the updated oil pump? I also noticed some loud not hard shifting but seemed clunky, I could feel it, shifting the other day after changing all my fluids. Any idea what that could be?
Dude I recently took a 2019 Heritage 114 out for a test ride and when I got back to the dealership I was smelling burnt and my heels were freaking hot. It got me think but know I'm seeing all these comments and it all making sense.
@@juanrramirez6222 Were you riding with your heels on the pipes? I have a 2020 114 Herritage and put 7k miles on it this year and never had any heat issues. The smell was there during the break in period, as it was on my last new bike because the actual engine break in and different oil. The hot heels I have no idea.
I own a 2018 fatboy 114 version....i have had absolutely no issues with it in any way shape or form. No issues at all. Even had the stage 1 put on it. Solid Bike! Love your videos. You going to Sturgis this year?
John, what about running Bel Ray trans oil? I wonder if you could see that the primary oil has been tinted pinkish from a leak. 5 oz in a quart, maybe not, but maybe. In my TC103 dyna, Bel Ray trans oil is much smoother than Syn3.
Sold MY Sportster (Iron 883) and got my 2019 Milwaukee 8 114 Road Glide Special in billiard blue. No regrets. #AmericanHarley in North Tonawanda, NY treats the customer right!
I got a 2018 heritage with a stage II I did about 4,000 miles ago. I noticed around the 2,100rpm range it sounds like excessive noice from the lifter area. I don’t know if I should be concerned or not. I’ve never heard it ever before.
Thanks for that. My dealership replaced a seal in the primary for the oil transfer problem and I’ve had no issues sense. I’m getting ready for my 30k service in 3 weeks and that’s the only issue and it was discovered at my request. They removed the derby cover and fluid came out and transmission was low. Love the bike and your videos 😎
Another great video man, I know what you're saying about the internet and taking things out of proportion and sometimes creating problems that are non-existent. Several years ago Stihl moved fuel injection in their concrete saws but they knew that it would likely get a negative feedback and the people would create a problem where there was none and say that it was no go so instead of hyping up that they were going to fuel injection on these concrete saws they did it very very quietly and didn't say anything didn't advertise it much and before they knew it people were in love with the fuel injector over the old carbureted and they didn't even know it.
Hey John since you were talking oil pumps as such always wondered why Harley took the time to put an o ring on the feed side of a TC pump but never put on rings to the filter housing from the cam plate. This seems like a no brainer spot to put them. Was it cost savings or is any leak there not really a big deal?
Hey John, Enjoy your videos. I just traded my 16 Road Glide in for an 18 Road Glide M8. Love the bike, suspension and power are major improvements, but I noticed an oil leak coming from the air intake after longer trips. I just finished a 1100 mile trip down the coast and oil leak is to the point of being a safety hazard as far as spewing onto pipes, side bag and rear wheel. I checked oil level and it was low a quart. I have brought the bike to my dealer for the 1K mile service and they are trying to pass this blow by as normal and said they would check it out but may not be able to do anything. I have heard other riders having this same problem. Have you've seen this issue with any of your customers, and what is your dealership telling them? I have other friends with M8's that don't have this problem at all. I hope Harley addresses this issue with the new bikes...Please give me some advice on this problem...Thanks Tom
I reckon it was an oil pump update to correct sumping. My M8 107 (heritage softail) I just purchased 3 weeks ago That is only 400miles in is burning about 1/2 a qt of oil per hundred miles. Checked after the first fuel fill up and dipstick was completely dry. Topped off, (1qt) Took it in last week for said issue and of course nothing was done. Since it was “all ok.” I asked if simple checks as in compression check or leakdown tests were done and nothing. Burned through another 1/2 qt after a 100mile ride yesterday. Pulled both of the left side spark plugs out and whatya know? Completely oiled fouled. I will be once again give them a call and drop it off Tuesday when they open. Not happy about this. Second weekend in a row I have to cancel trips due to this and have only had the bike 3 weeks!! I’ll try and keep you guys updated and see what happens.
How about the issue with leaking fuel from the vent pipe and (separate issue) strong smell of fuel vapour that is causing the frame paint where the vent is attached too to melt/become damaged. I have this latter issue with my 2020 Low Rider.
Greg
Thanks Greg!
OTOOLES ARE GOOD PEOPLE !!!!!!
If only all techs were as honest, knowledgeable and competent as you. Let alone actually cared about their work.
I’m glad I sumping is not an issue with normal 107 and 114 engines. Reading HD forums would make you think it’s widespread. Thanks for clarification
Im a technician at valley forge harley davison and i think u make awesome videos John! Keep up the good work !
2017 SGS - Mine has a Stage IV, oil cooled. My dealer put in the updated oil pump as a part of the Stage IV at no additional cost. Just had my 15k service done... 5k miles on the Stage IV, no issues. Love the bike.
My fluid was low. So I bought a 6 pack of Stella and I’m happy to report all is good!!

You should have absolutely no problem with any bike 10000 miles get a life
Not to be pessimistic but there is still a lot of time for shit to go wrong.
jim wortham well other people have posted problems before their first 1,000 miles.

Harley doesn't have recalls, but they will sell you an update kit! I'll keep my old iron.
im still on my 95 evo no issues, just get on and ride, ride, and ride

Also I’m test riding the 2018 street bob Friday!!!!!!!
it doesn't get them anymore money than skipping it. Only way they don't get the add revenue is if you have an add blocker on your browser.
Yea man, you can skip it, I’m not mad!
John Maxwell to late know. I already suffered through it. 😢
I’m glad you let me know! That’s crazy that it never even got fixed. Glad you ended up with something better!
John Maxwell thanks man! Hopefully my comment will help someone else. I say stay away from used low mileage 2017 and 2018 m8 bikes.
Well that sucks for the guy who buys it next. Hope that guy checks his shit and gets it fixed.
Good Buisness. great video. I'm a 28 year tech and enjoy well put together informative videos. thanks bud.
Glad you enjoyed Jason!
I'm and old time Harley guy but after many problems with bikes and Harley I traded my Street Glide for a Triumph Storm, I'll never go back to that junk.
Good luck with the warranty, tired of Harley bull , my new chieftain smoked a street glide, and a ultra
Thanks Matt! I’m getting super excited about the dealer show, for sure!
I’m will not be doing a live feed, and the torque cam question should be coming up in a video soon. It’s a lot of info to type! It’s not as simple as yay or nay!
John Maxwell cool looking forward to it!!
I watched Matt’s live stream for the reveal of the M8 softails. It was an awesome show!
My M8 has been flawless. Not a single issue and I ride it daily and I ride it hard
I agree. For what I paid, my bike should have been unquestionably pristine.
You and Matt Laidlaw are my go to Harley guys!
Agreed. You might check out Kevin, at MCRIDER. He puts out great MC 101 that can be a very good technique reminder for experienced riders. I have been riding for a solid 42 years...we all can develop bad habits.. Cheers! Rubber on the bottom
pete maffei I will definitely check him out, thanks!
Same
Yea those are good guys for sure...
Covered under warranty, never heard that in a Harley service department, only in sales.
@@VndNvwYvvSvv Huh? VW? The company that sticks with a design just about forever? That's the opposite of planned obsolescence.
Thanks for letting me know to stick with the 103 motor bikes.
And the 96. The 96 and 103 are great engines.
That's why you never buy the first year of anything the bugs aren't worked out yet...
Exactly. Never fly the 'A' model of anything.

John, can you make a video discussing the differences of the new water pump & plumbing that was installed on my 2015 Ultra limited compared to the old pump. Thanks
Was silently, patiently waiting for you to cover this at some point. Thank you John.
nicely done. refreshing to hear from a guy that actually wrenches on the bikes. I remember all the negative hype about the 96" motor mine has performed flawlessly since 2007.
Harley Davidson, keeping the total loss oil system alive and well in 2018.
Can you do an update on the oil transfer issue? Since this video, how often do you see this issue?
Yes, I would also like to see an update and more info on the latest primary rubber hose vent fix the moco came out with, I heard all Hyd clutch models have it from assembly now
Wish they would have just built on the V-rod engine and redesigned the chassis....
I have a 2009 flh and you mention that HD trans are rarely opened
and not something problematic. I have had my 6th gear bearing
go and when i was at the dealer another guy had to rebuild
his. I bought mine used the other guy it was new. Was it just bad luck
from both bikes or like i was told first generation 6th speed and it could
come back again as an issue ? 54000 milles on the bike compensator
has been changed also. Anything else major i can expect ? I love the bike why trade it in
unless i am looking at big repairs in the near future.
9600 miles on it
$4200
Wanted a HD.
For a 90 hp plus HD used
$9K was the best I could find .
I love HD, but there not twice the price of a Rice Burner.
A 2008 Goldwing was $7.5-8k
1836 cc
Something is wrong with HD....
The new Indian bikes
The big hogs....
Front tire was $500 plus installation.
Buy a new Rice Burner,
Save tons of money, and end up with the better ride over all.

Stoked to hear your selling the sportster and shooting for an M8. The question remains what model???
you're ...
Breakout
Hi John, Are you aware of a sumping problem on the M8 117 CVO motors. I am hearing that a significant number of engines and oil pumps have been replaced. apparently the pump pumps oil into the engine that then drain in the crank case and does not return to the oil pan.. this causes an overheat in the top end after time or hard riding.
17 road glide motor replaced, sumping issues at 25,000. I laugh everytime I hear somebody act like this wasn't a issue before they've changed oil pumps like 4 times since 2017.
Bro I’ve had same problems and it’s still not fixed I’m actually in court over thes issues
I am a visual learner and that was an excellent explanation of a transmission. Thank you for your time and efforts.
Thanks John! I appreciate the knowledge. Especially since my first Harley is an M8. Keep’em coming!
I haven't had any trouble with mine yet , I took off from St Peter IL and in a day and a half ended up in Roswell NM. Great ride no complaints. (2017 Ultra Limited)
I've bougt a brand new M8 SGS 114" bj 2019 , in which "the oil transfer issue" occured ( and another member of our HD club has bought last year a M8 RK 107" bj 2018 , which is infected with that same "issue" as well .)
...so please don't try to convince us that it is just "rare" , because it is not.
Both of the bikes are under warrenty , and get an approved "fix" at the dealer ( but it is no guarantee that it will solve the problem for 100% ) ,
So if it does , I'll let you know here .
I have a couple month old ‘19 streetbob 107 your scaring me bro
Had my 2019 RK Special transfer fixed and after 6k miles no transfer. As a matter of fact all new builds as of 5/19 has this installed from the factory. Only thing my bike is doing now is blowing blue smoke now at start up....shit motor. Thank goodness I still have my twin cam bikes in the barn.
Was thinking of getting a Heritage 114 now I'm getting second thoughts.
Since this video was released, I bought a 114 heritage. No issues, and I love it.

Appreciate the knowledge. They are on the 5th generation of oil pump for stake 4. Sumping is huge problem here in Cali. 3 friends have had there motors rebuilt already. Not the twin cooled motor. My dealer has 6 bikes in there shop right now that are blown.

@Joseph Marton i really liked the indian i rented but so many more service places for harley

Great info! 4000+ on my FB M8 with no issues! Love my bike! Ride hard or stay home!😎.... thanks transmission guy😂😂🤣
Hello 4000 miles is absolutely nothing holler when you get a hundred thousand like most other bikes
4000 mile LOL what a freaking joke

Stage 4 anything always has problems we had a stage 4 sporty that we couldnt sell cuz it was always breaking down. Stage 1 or stage 2 is as far as i would ever go on my tc96
"Stage", lol. That video game Midnight Club Street Racing terminology needs to die a decade ago
Thanks man. I appreciate that.

Thanks for the info. Love my Milwaukee 8 in my '17 Road King!
I put the 128 stage four in my 18 RGS in 2020. This would come with the updated oil pump? I also noticed some loud not hard shifting but seemed clunky, I could feel it, shifting the other day after changing all my fluids. Any idea what that could be?
The temps on both sides of the 2019 Softail Deluxe engine guards exceed 750 degrees F. How is a person to ride it without getting burned?
750 degrees where?
Dude I recently took a 2019 Heritage 114 out for a test ride and when I got back to the dealership I was smelling burnt and my heels were freaking hot. It got me think but know I'm seeing all these comments and it all making sense.
You got burned when you bought it !

JFYI......114 is called an S model.
So happy with my m8. 10k so far and I’m super happy with the lower heat, the extra power and the suspension is pretty badass
Tom A probably sumping
Thanks Jim, Dealer did find one of the hoses disconnected from one of the breather outlets...will see if it subsides...
whats the fix for sumping?...lol
1985GusT any new updates? Curious why a new engine is burning so much oil.
How about the issue with leaking fuel from the vent pipe and (separate issue) strong smell of fuel vapour that is causing the frame paint where the vent is attached too to melt/become damaged. I have this latter issue with my 2020 Low Rider.
