I feel like Jesse has a deep appreciation for the sensitivity and delicacy of the artistic spirit. Atlantic is where I've always wanted to go funnily enough. The days of being discovered may be over now that everything is statistically analyzed from streaming data...or at least that's how it appears or it seems. The remaining major labels need to show artists that don't have the funding or the means to market and promote that there's still a reason to sign with a label and not stay independent. When all we see are ads for United Masters and testimonials from independent artists about how the majors and other labels are only out to screw the artist it kinda makes people think twice. They need to revamp and be more artist-centric than ever I believe. Why not hook good artists up? Dare to be different in an already oversaturated space... who cares if it's safe.🤷🏼‍♂️
    All kinds of different people are claiming to work for different labels as A&R and are catfishing ppl daily on Instagram and elsewhere saying that they'll shop your song to the labels for a fee when all they do is steal from unknown artists and send them fake feedback from the fake label. I don't trust anyone at this point that claims they work for a label anymore. It's too often that I'm approached by scammers and catch their bullshit....I doubt a single one out of the couple hundred that hit me up we're legit.

      @@jojo-fj7lw I know this is pretty late, but cultural relevance is a nice way of saying they want someone who is already prepackaged and ready to go social media wise. They want to know if this particular person has some type of impact in whatever culture that they are being passed off to. Numbers, followers, looks, etc. Thats the focus not actual talent, skill, and ability to create music. The cultural relevance is what’s selling the records not the music itself.

    Atlantic was an independent that played among the majors until Warner Brothers / 7 Arts acquired the label in 1968. The founder, Ahmet Ertegun did many of the things you mention in this Podcast. A visionary, he heard the music of the future to allow artists to flourish under this banner of creativity. While his love was Jazz and R&B, he was wise enough to move ahead of the musical times and from this, it appears this same vision still applies at the label. I knew the man and visited him in NYC and his encouragement led me to try things I might not had done otherwise. The 1960's and 1970's were happening times. I believe people like Ahmet, Clive and Sam Phillips (SUN) were the greatest record men. I'll give a nod to Alan Lomax and John Hammond for their major contributions as well. These men knew the importance of the "business" of music, but they were also fans of music. That is what really set them apart. You have to appreciate that Ahmet was at a Rolling Stones concert in 2008 backstage where he fell and never recovered. That's dedication to the arts.

      @@Musformation - your welcome. Great times I had then. I've nothing against the digital realm, but many artists that made it big wouldn't make it past their last download. Artists were allowed to develop and the business model allowed labels to take chances on talent. The LP format allowed artists to experiment and be more creative. Those albums held hidden gems that never had been heard - only the hits. I wax (figuratively and literally as I am a vinyl junkie) nostalgic. I will be checking out more of your videos!

    What I see here is that at least one record label has freaked out that real talent is not coming to them because talented artists are remaining independent and don't really need major labels to be successful. And now at least one label has paid this guy to talk up major record labels.

      @Musformation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Well the part you’re right about is major labels are freaked out and about indie artists doing it on their own. But honestly dude before you level accusations it’s not very smart to do no research, my day job is giving hard questions to politicians, musicians and actors and have a reputation for actually being very hard on people. But sadly atlantic doesn’t pay me anymore (I’m sad when ever I lose a check) but who does pay me does so to be hard on people but not every story is one worthy of saying bad things. But I encourage you to do sone research before you accuse people in the future it may surprise you how wrong your assumption is.

    • @stevensterner7582
      @stevensterner7582 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Musformation I've been around both independent artists and artists on major labels, engineers for both, etc. for years. I have heard many personal accounts of the treatment by labels that is counter to the information that is being presented. I'm not assuming my knowledge. And I did watch the video through and you just said yourself you were paid by a label...sooo....what accusation did I make? It is not a great leap of logic to go from the product of a person paid from working with a major label and walking it back to the impetus of the worrying about talent acquisition. It is no shade on you.
      I have no problem with you getting your money for the video. I actually have no issue with the video or the information in it. I am simply framing it in a greater context that I perceive. And you DO likely have a biased viewpoint from your experiences of working at a label. But I also wouldn't even be concerned by that if it were addressed in the video.
      Good luck with your future endeavors!

    • @Musformation
      @Musformation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I haven’t been paid by them for a year and I now draw money from literally confronting sone of the most powerful people in the world yet somehow I would be scared to tell the truth about a label when I do that each and everyday publishing live interviews asking tough questions to politicians and scientist 🤔🤔🤔 or that you just made an assumption based on a 14 minute video🤔? I wonder which one is more accurate?

    • @stevensterner7582
      @stevensterner7582 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Musformation Did I say scared? No i did not. Predisposed to that viewpoint? Yes I did say that. Because that is how people work. People act in patterns of behavior. And those patterns continue on naturally. You did that message for labels before. The tendency is to continue. And that IS the message that the video purveys.
      And again you use the "assume" term. And I am not assuming my points. Also, You also are insinuating that I am making some personal moral judgement of you when I am not. You are adding way more to what I said than I actually am.
      Now I have to ask myself, why is this Jesse getting so defensive? Have I struck a nerve? It is not a good look for you to have pursued this. This messaging gives off an feeling of defensive desperation. May I suggest that you do not repeat it? It is much better to ignore a comment if it sets you off. Appearances do matter.

    Here’s my confusion... why do we still see so many major artists cashing in on musical trends? I hear so many non-trap artists throwing trap beats on their stuff, artists introducing overused pop chord progressions that weren’t in their discography before, I could go on. Are these purely artist decisions that are being embraced or is this negative influence from label pressure?

    • @Musformation
      @Musformation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my experience the artist and the songwriters are who chase those trends and it’s often innocent. They get into a song and want to feel the emotion of it it’s all very innocent and lends itself to occams razor. My background as a producer outside of any major label experience I may have had is the label is often blamed for a bands direction when more often than not it’s the artist making a decision. I actually produced a documentary on this that comes out soon

    Can u please please please do a videocon whether it’s worth the move to LA just to build community there and socialize and network. Like Q: is it worth it if you have to take up significantly higher expenses & a harder job to move to LA if it means you get to network? Possibly have already 7-8 songs and videos planned for release and do it?

    I got 40 years worth of pent up riffs...emotions etc.(most of which I've forgotten because why remember something nobody else cares about?) The thing is NOBODY CARES. Because I never had the money or clout to show people what I can really do. And people don't care about you until you can show them what you can do but I'm too old and beaten down now and out of practice and it's like walking up a giant mountain. Very few people have the support/circumstances to be unhindered in their music....if they do...WATCH OUT THEY WILL BECOME STARS. But most people just get an endless stifling brickwall from family, friends, neighbors and everyone else. Then if they 'make' it suddenly everyone wants to know them and be their 'friend'. Bunch of fucking bullshit if you ask me.

    What if you have uploaded and entire album a few years ago to Spotify and now realize that back then we did not have this great advise as to how to take advantage of the algo rythms. Would there be anything that can be done to promote this album or songs, or would it be wise to take the entire album down and start over again from scratch using these ideas that you are telling us about?
