Is ProRAW the new Raw Ruler? Apple ProRAW vs Halide Raw vs Jpeg

    In this video, I take a somewhat controlled look at the differences between Apple ProRaw and a traditional raw image shot on an iPhone from both the Halide app and Lightroom Mobile, and also include the jpeg file for good measure.
    I run through the set up I used for gathering these images, and then after AirDropping them to my Mac, load up Adobe Bridge for a closer look.
    In particular, I look at how shadow detail compares between images, then sharpening, and then finish with colour detail.
    The images have been shot using iOS 14.3 Public Beta 3, and I used the latest available apps for Halide and Lightroom at the time.
    Bear in mind, this is still beta software, so changes may still come from ProRaw.

    Halide has just been updated to version 2.1 and now supports ProRAW! The developers have put out an incredibly detailed blog post that's well worth checking out if this sort of thing interests you - blog.halide.cam/understanding-proraw-4eed556d4c54

    Pro Raw is certainly a nice feature to have. That said, it seems very clear that there is targeted pre-processing such as luminance noise reduction going in in the shadow areas of the APR files. Even without this, they would still be cleaner that the native RAW files, but be aware that you are looking at an image that has already be processed a little in the Apple Pro Raw pipeline.

      If we could only find a way to disable ALL submerged denoising, rather live with some noise than watercolour photos 😤 Also I wonder, why is Apple so reluctant on letting users have a button shortcut to open camera (like 2 clicks on power button for most androids). Maybe we must go back to jailbreaking to create our ultimate camera iphone? 🤔

    Leaves me still thinking if I should upgrade my 11 pro max ? Or not. Will the Hallide App be a better choice Or go for 12 Pro Max ?
    Are there any other major upgrades which should force me or any of us to go for an upgrade???

    Very exhaustive research Josh. Question: Was the "Smart HDR" selected in the Camera for all the shots? My local tests with it 'off' produced better exposures, overall and there's some question if the Smart HDR is adding some AI artifacts. Thanks for your dedicated research!

  • @solcrusher
    @solcrusher 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could the difference in baseline sharpness be due to Apple's image processing pipeline? I'm guessing that combining 12 images into 1 allows them to get higher sharpness than a single RAW photo from the sensor could ever manage.

    • @OUTFOXEM
      @OUTFOXEM 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's just oversharpening everything. I noticed it with the very first test image I took with my iPhone 12 Pro. I just so happened to take a picture with text, and you can actually see it apply the sharpness because you get a split second to view the unsharpened picture before it applies it. With text it is especially bad, and I really wish there was a way to turn it off. It's terrible. The camera is great, the sharpening done afterwards.... not so much.

      @@iamjoshstunell I appreciate the great review. I’m confused about raw mode. I think I have all the settings correct and an image is indeed tagged with the RAW label...but no matter how I try to inspect it I don’t see large file sizes. They always come out 1.5 Mb even if I airdrop an unedited image on my Mac. Using any file inspector app just sees it as a jpg, not a 25Mb raw image. Can you help?

  • @kalimarus

    Now how does it compare with a Full Frame RAW from a A7iii/Z6/D750/R6 etc?

    • @iamjoshstunell
      @iamjoshstunell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think a full frame sensor will generally always be better. Larger sensor generally leads to less noise in the image. Apple is just using software to produce a cleaner image, given the limitations of the camera sensor inside the phone.

    Nice comparison. Thanks. How would you evaluate ProRaw implementation changes between various beta versions?

    • @iamjoshstunell
      @iamjoshstunell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used Beta 2 and Beta 3. In my previous video filmed using beta 2, ProRAW seemed to be a bit aggressive in the noise reduction on some hair, but in beta 3 I haven't seen that yet. I don't know if anything was changed in settings between the beta's though, or if that first video with the hair was just an anomaly.

    • @iamjoshstunell
      @iamjoshstunell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You definitely have more control over the image in editing compared to a typical jpeg file, but the larger sensor of the DSLR camera will generally be better for noise reduction, and generally have much better resolution too.
