  • Apple introduced ProRAW just a couple of years ago. But how good is it really? Let’s find out!

Every RAW also takes a fully processed HEIF. You can use the the HEIF to bring back some of the higher frequency details.
This seems to have somewhat improved with the 15 Pro.

Totally agree. I have the same problem with this agressive noise reduction which led to lost of details and water paint effect

To use the full potential of ProRaw is important to change the profile to Adobe Standard or Adobe Color. Also is important to learn how to expose these images. When you change the profile you see the "real" exposure of the ProRAW file, and with time one learns how to use its full potential, specially when HDR editing is On (real HDR with an HDR display). Of course it won't compete with any standalone camera (my old Canon 5D MkII is 1000 times better) but as a phone, I believe is quite good.

pulling my friggin hair out trying to get Apple ProMax files to work well with lightroom presets. They look awful and often times the preset will just switch the profile from ApplePro to some other profile completely muddying it and making it dark.
i’m disabling ApplePro and just using 12mp jpg format now

My suggestion would be to rely less on presets in general, since a lot of these will work with very specific lighting conditions. That still won't solve Apple's ProRAW format issues but in the end you will be able to get better results out of that format.
I would say try using regular RAW since it will be more flexible than the compressed and highly processed JPG coming straight out of the camera.

how do yo do bracketing with iphone?

You need to use third party programs like Halide. The default app is a little bit limited in that regard

Okay, I did some tests and I am not seeing this on my iPhone 14 Pro. Are you sure that you do not have your iCloud settings set to Optimize iCloud Storage and that is introducing compression? Because ProRAW is a 10bit file that allows more Data to be saved to the DNG to retain more sensor information and dynamic range. This DNG allows more flexibility when editing. There is no compression or processing with these DNG RAW files. To me, it looks like you are editing the jpeg versions of these files. I simple do not have this sort of issue with my iPhone 14 Pro at all. ProRaw Resolution or standard RAW either.

Hey there. The problem with ProRAW is that it applies noise reduction to the image. It basically goes through all the typical processing a regular image goes through. So all the machine learning optimisations including noise reduction will happen in ProRAW too.
But yeah to answer your question I do edit the actual ProRAW file and not a JPEG. You can see me do so in 8:13. It's not one of the problematic images but all of them were edited the same way.
Give the first scenario (high dynamic range) a try. I'm sure you'll be able to reproduce the results! Let us know how it goes!

@@marvelousdecay So, you are post processing 3 ProRaw settings in external software?? And you cannot compare a GH5 shot to a phone sensor..this first of all makes no sense. Not remotely...ehem apples to apples. Also, keep in mind that ProRaw files are only 48mpix if you shot 1x only. If you are processing the ProRaw brackets externally, I would first ask..why? I have had no issues with noise when processing a single ProRaw DNG. This is in the case of roughly 14 stops of light (The only reason you would use HDR anyway) Since there is no HDR setting in the camera app, I am assuming this is what you are doing. If that is the case, what software are you using? And again, the idea of ProRaw is so that you do not have to shoot multiple brackets. Anyway, if you are just shooting the photo in ProRaw (in camera HDR) (the only way I know how to do it) This is not an issue on my iPhone. I am not getting this smudged noise issue.

I’m not stacking ProRAW images together. In case it’s not clear in the video, in the high dynamic range scenario, I shoot:
      1) A GH5 bracketed image as a baseline
      2) One ProRAW image to actually see what the dynamic range of ProRAW is
      3) A bracketed iPhone RAW image to compare it with the iPhone ProRAW image.
The bracketed iPhone RAW image holds more detail than the iPhone ProRAW image.
The reason you don’t have any issues with noise when processing a single ProRAW DNG file is exactly the issue. It applies aggressive noise reduction to the point of smudging details. This is one of the reasons the bracketed iPhone RAW file maintains so much more detail. There are no aggressive noise reduction algorithms applied to it.
As you’ve mentioned already, you’re not seeing the smudging in your own pictures. I understand that but I’m just letting you know that I’ve seen this smudging in other ProRAW files too, not just mine. So my guess is that the ProRAW images you’re checking don’t have enough challenging light situations for the iPhone to trigger the aggressive noise reduction.
When you shoot images with plenty of light, like in the second scenario of the video, the ProRAW file won’t have this aggressive noise reduction applied to it.
Some more details about the images:
The ProRAW file is captured with the default camera app and then opened up in Photoshop. Adobe is the company that worked with Apple to make the necessary ProRAW additions to the DNG format.

Does that mean the regular iPhone is good enough. Don’t need to get the iPhone pro? Eg, iPhone 15 v.s. iPhone 15 pro.

The iPhone 15 pro camera has its advantages over the iPhone 15 but you'll be also good with the iPhone 15.

You can absolutely take great photos and videos with the base model iPhone 15, you don't need a Pro for that. I shot some of my all time favorite photos on a base model iPhone 8!
But in the grand scheme of things, the difference between an iPhone 15 and a 15 Pro Max compared to something like an extra lens for your interchangeable lens camera isn't that big, if you're into phone video/photography, want a tele lens, and aren't tight on money it's fairly easy to justify.

You should compare to google pixel 3 raw vs 14 pro raw files, pickle 3 still win by 100miles, proraw is a joke.
