This was a joy to watch. Even though it is a highly theoretical discussion of a software feature, it was very easy to follow and the conversation style worked great for this. Thank you very much for the effort! Nerd hat off to you, sir.

The way that rack in the background of you talking perfectly lines up with the right end of the image area is so satisfying! And, of course, the actual content of the video isn’t of any lesser quality than your framing. Keep it up!

I realise this video is a few months old but I just bought an iPhone 13 Pro Max and had already downloaded the Halide trial. This video is one of the most interesting videos I’ve seen on TH-cam and certainly contains the most (useable) information on ProRaw I have found. Thanks so much for a thoroughly researched and well presented video and for the extra tips on using Halide. Absolutely superb.

Amazing video, wow! I just purchased the iPhone 13 Pro coming from the Galaxy S9+. I took a dive in ProRaw and read their article about it a few days ago, amazing how you asked just the right questions to make it even more understandable. Given that this is a deep and complex subject. Also, amazing video quality with great photo samples/comparisons!

  • @yuxuanhuang3523

Thanks for this explanation! So my understanding is Apple just did what they would do to any photo: taking multiple exposures and merging. But in the middle of the process, rather than pulling up the shadows and down the highlights for you and burning it into a 8 bit jpeg, it just creates a 12 bit image. That image is like the TIFF you get from merging a HDR in Lightroom. All the dynamic range from those shots is kept in. The only extra thing ProRAW did was to give softwares a mask that tells what it thinks should be done, but the option is still in user hands. So if I brought it into older lightroom that doesn't read the mask, I could just treat it as something like a TIFF and bring out the details manually.

I took a picture at midnight, in a bushy forest. You could barely see. But ProRaw with long exposure was able to show me perfect green trees and daylight looking image overall - I have never seen anything like it. I could also tell which branches were closer to me, like a depth effect, and I’m talking 50 meters distance. This was never possible on my 11 Pro, it all looked mushy; bright enough, but mushy contrast and greenish tint all over the picture. Now with 12,13 pros, the camera is simply outstanding once again.
I just wish they’ll release a version that uses LCD screen, like an SE. Amoleds make my eyes hurt after a while 😞

I have one question left: How can I extract the Semantic mask and make use of it (e.g. as a masking layer in PS)? Neither PS, nor Affinity Photo seem to make the information available and halide can show it but does noch seem to be able to export it.

Great deep dive! In your opinion: is ProRaw a good format to edit with? I'm editing ProRaws in Lightroom that look OK with the ProRaw profile, but when you try to use sliders on top of this tone mapping (shadows, highlights), the two don't work together nicely. The overall dynamic range is even disappointing, it's hard to reduce overexposed area's for instance. A 16 bit HDR DNG made with the Lightroom app doesn't have the problem of tone mapping fighting the edit sliders, but can't benefit from Apples processing smarts (and masks). What's your take on this?

UPDATE: To see the full metadata on Mac, select a photo using the Finder's Gallery view.
I'm not seeing the creator responding to latest posts, so I may be shouting into the void here…. At 4:39 (th-cam.com/video/L9SLc7NTbeE/w-d-xo.html) there's a screenshot of a More Info window. I cannot find this specific More Info metadata anywhere! The other screenshot in the background makes it look like the DNG was accessed in a Mac Finder. But If I do that, the Get Info doesn't look like your screen. Can you guide me through the process of how to see this data as it's shown in your video? Thanks!

I've just switched from Android to an iPhone 13 Mini and, despite not being able to shoot ProRaw on my iPhone, this was super interesting!
The thing is I still haven't quite grasped when it's better to use RAW and when ProRaw...I mean, if you want the full quality with the least loss of detail and most flexibility RAW is still the way to go? Or did I miss something?

    • @suzanne3t

I don't have the option to shoot an unprocessed RAW (DNG) in the 13PM. (I know you have a Mini, sorry, I'm just letting you in on this info.) ProRAW IS processed, to a certain extent. Ugh.

@@suzanne3t ok so RAW is still the way to go if I want to get the best possible file. I was curious because there's lots of third party apps enabling RAW shooting(Moment, Halide, even Lightroom if you have the paid plan) but I was still wandering which of the two formats retained more infos.
