Apple ProRAW vs JPEG for EVERYDAY photos. Is ProRAW worth the trade off?!

  • In today’s video, I’ll be testing out a new feature of iOS 14.3 called Apple ProRAW. At this stage, Apple ProRAW is limited to the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro MAX only.
Apple says ProRAW is a 12-bit file that uses the Linear DNG format to retain more information and dynamic range in the file, providing additional flexibility when editing exposure and white balance. Each file is approximately 25mb, which is around 10x that of the equivalent jpeg. So if storage on your phone is of concern, you might have to use this feature sparingly.
I will be using a tripod to take the photos, as I will also shoot the same image in the standard jpeg format, to be able to directly compare the jpeg vs ProRAW, and see if the benefits of raw are worth it.

Raw files always need additional sharpening applied to them. That’s why the HEIC of the hair is sharper and more detailed because the phone did the sharpening for you (hence the noise).

The Apple ProRaw already come with sharpness applied to them. Even at 0 sharpening there is clearly sharpening applied to the files.

@@swaggyeggs its just not a good way to handle RAW files. Google has been doing the same thing for years and they give far better control. Same story with noise reduction, the raw files (even at zero noise reduction in LR) come with heavy noise reduction applied to photos and especially to areas under shadows and somehow applies more noise reduction than the simple HEIC files which cause worser details. Shooting city scapes is fine enough, shoot anything with alot of trees, or people and it becomes problamatic.

Yes, I use ProRaw exclusively since I installed 14.3 beta 3. The plus in dynamic range is impressive for a phone. Specially night mode photos are almost as clean as out of my system camera. However once edited in Lightroom, I delete the original Raw files from the phone, otherwise it would be full quickly.

  • @schretter1

Thanks Josh. Excellent comparison of the enhanced capabilities of ProRAW. They are large files and will eat up limited iPhone/iCloud storage space quickly. Possibly best alternative is to use Lightroom on iPhone and let Adobe store the originals in the Cloud and then let LR manage storage on the iPhone. Thus. shooting in ProRAW should not use more iPhone storage than HEIF/JPG

Great Review, however the music in the background is bad, it realy makes the video close to unwatchable for me. And it ditracts to much from waht you say.

Great vid. Please, please no more background music - incredibly annoying! If you must, something far less percussive 🤪

Is that music?! It is the same few notes over and over and over. The rest of the video was well done and informative, but I couldn't tune-out that looping audio.

I would have loved to see the whole test, unfortunately that music was driving me crazy😢

Very annoying background music makes a mockery of the main subject

The overuse of the word "ORDINARY" throughout this video is excruciating, otherwise great video.
