It’s great that these American students enjoyed their visit and saw first hand what China is really like. Unfortunately, with the negative and bigoted xenophobic narrative the American Administration and media perpetuates against China and its people, I really don’t see much collaboration between the two countries.

Hopefully, the students from western countries, like the U.S., UK, EU & Australia have enjoyed their stay in China , learnt about the social & cultural differences that would not divide us but rather , unite us as in a human society that each has a role to play in their future lives . Visiting each other with an open mind for understanding , would build bridges between nations & peoples & by breaking down walls that separate us. That day would be a day of liberation for humanity.

But do not be fooled by the self-interested, narcissistic political leaders in our countries who are more engrossed in their own political survival through the willful manipulation of the people through the use of "external threats to our national security" rather than being truly interested in the future and destiny of the country, its people and the nation. Just gauge them in what they have ACTUALLY done for the country and its people - not by their small little bits and pieces of crumbs tossed to them at every political rally just before an election but by the large vision and PLANS, properly laid out and costed (budgeted) they have and actually laid the foundations and begun the construction framework for.
If they are truly for the nation, we would have the same super infrastructure that China has today and continued progressing in - from high speed rail, a comprehensive network of efficient, low-cost public beneficial transportation, a national social medical health system to ensure a healthy nation, a comprehensive system of low-cost if not free education system since well-educated people end up benefitting the entire nation and it is to the advantage of a country's future prosperity and more INTERNAL social beneficial policies RATHER THAN WASTING all of its resources in foreign affairs and foreign wars that have little to nothing to do with the well-being of its own people at home.
Today, we have political leaders who believe that just because they have been in politics for "X" number of years, that is regarded as "sacrificing themselves for the country". e seldom if ever see any of these "self-sacrificing types' put on the uniform and joining their military in a foreign campaign that they send our own sons and daughters to be maimed, scarred for life or killed in, do we? We do not see those leaders spend a day or a week living among the homeless or those surviving on one meal a day, do we? We do not see any of these self-sacrificing leaders in public hospitals waiting to be taken off a gurney in a corridor to be seen by a doctor but we do see them instantly surrounded by medical specialists in luxuriously laid out private hospital rooms - and we have to ask ourselves, are these so-called people really leaders of the people who do not share the lives of their own people?
The thing is, most of our Western democracy political leaders have only an open mind for themselves and their wealthy political backers. Do not be so naive and gullible nor idealistic to believe that those politicians are equally idealistic as you are. They are mostly greedy, self-interested sods in the political game for themselves - mostly because they would not really succeed in the outside business world.
Remember that old adage: "Politics is the first and final refuge of scoundrels"? It was true and still is today. If you can find a politician who is truly self-sacrificial like the former Senator Liz Cheney who gave up all that she had for the interest of the nation, hold onto them fast. It is such a pity that we have so many more uneducated and unenlightened in the public sphere who cannot recognize a diamond from a piece of glass-like plastic.

    • @George-k6o9t

The U.S. (and Western alliance hacks) politicians KNOW the truth about China BUT they don't want the truth to be revealed as it is not to their own political advantage and careers. They have NEVER actually deep down, been there for the people but for their own personal gains.
When cultivating China's friendship has been regarded as an advantage against the former USSR, the U.S. under President Richard Nixon, a former anti-China/anti-Communist hawk, suddenly turned coat with his "ping-pong diplomacy". When creating the slanderous myth of a "China threat" becomes an advantage under President Obama, the "Nobel Peace Prize" recipient (sarcasm here), China is suddenly turned 180 degrees from a cuddly panda into a "lone wolf warrior" while the cudgels were picked up by a narcissist Donald Trump who clearly saw the punching of China as a great election winning theme as the U.S. has always needed some kind of foreign "threat" to motivate itself.
So, getting those U.S. politicians to visit China will not do much good since it is not a lack of knowledge but rather a lack of human decency and ethical principles - and one doesn't know quite how to overcome this obstacle.

That will change the geo-political landscape dramatically. I visited China in 2007 & loved it. Obviously much has changed & expanded since then with infrastructure. People there are welcoming.

Oh - but the U.S. President KNOWS. However, it is not to his political advantage to treat China with mutual respect and cultivate friendly relationships with - not when he knows that he will be labeled a "Communist" (like Bernie Sanders) or a "Manchurian Candidate". It has always been mostly easier for U.S. Americans to smash down the opposition than it is to work hard and compete equally and fairly (there has been a relative very few times when the U.S. actually came together as a truly unified country and worked really hard to compete. Those times were labeled as "the Greatest Generation" between 1935 - 1965. since then, it has all been down a slippery slope like an avalanche that is gaining speed and momentum.

Totally and utterly agree. I was pleasantly surprised when I visited China. It is NOT like what we've been told back home in the West. People really need to get themselves a passport and visit China to see the REAL China. I've travelled to many places around the world, and China has to be the most advanced country, with the most amazing Civic Infrastructures and affordable Civic Services it provides for ALL its Citizens. It is most annoying seeing the West continually trashing China and WHY are USA investing $300 Billion a year, as part of their Anti China policy, to media trash China. WHY? That is mean, and nasty. Why not work with China. Clearly, the world can see that USA's Corporatism DOES NOT WORK for over 90% of its population.

Chinese students have been and are labelled "spies" and "secret agents of the PLA" in the U.S. and have been physically attacked (and some murdered). With such animosity and viciousness laid out as their "welcoming carpet", you think they would be interested in visiting a place where they are not really welcomed but screamed at to "go back to where you came from" by members of the population?
In contrast, the foreign students in China are treated with respect, as guests and even as one's extended family members by the Chinese public. Big, big difference.

This is a surprisingly well-organized event. Even though it appeared to be a tightly arranged, highly curated official trip, which might raise questions about the "authenticity" of everything they learned or even confirm preexistings views about China being an authoritarian state, the focus on culture and environment is very smart. Further, given the ongoing misunderstandings and various difficulties (e.g., language barrier, internet access, special requirements regarding foreigners in China, or simply information overload) that may prevent Western youths and travelers from directly "plugging in" and fully experiencing Chinese society, this may actually be the ideal form of intercultural exchange for the moment.

Jeez Louise...this video gives me bad vibes...like both countries have been ripping me off... Columbia U. was my Mom's almw mater where she got her Master's in English Literature in the early 1960s...my Dad was a physics professor who did a lot of theoretical work on superconductivity starting in the late 1980s...he was also a big basketball fan from his graduate school days in the late 1950s, early 1960s...used to tell me stories of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain...I was a big basketball fan when I was in elementary school, later became a sports reporter for UCLA during the beginning of the Michael Jordan era ...my parents fell apart though, after a golddigging moral-less homewrecker from Beijing deliberately broke up my mother's marriage by sleeping around with my father and then causing their divorce...worse than that, she stole all the wealth (~$3,000,000US now) that was due to my Mom for her 30+years of handholding my Dad in domestic work by raising three kids and doing all the cooking and laundry and housecleaning, plus mowing the lawn and helping shovel snow from the driveway and porch in winters.
Not only that, she and her parents mistreated my Dad by refusing to look very hard to get him help during the beginning of his Alzheimer's, and stole (with help from her crooked lawyer) all of his stocks and mutual funds and cash that he had stipulated in his will was to be left to my two sisters and me.
This would not be such a big deal had I been properly hired and paid by Yahoo AFTER they used my three job applications cover letters related to "search relevance" (best results for whatever is typed into a search engine), but I have not been paid a cent, even though half the world, including millions of people in China, used Yahoo Answers雅虎知识。。。

Exceptionally sorry to learn of your family's misfortunes, Tien Lee. However, to blame an ENTIRE country for the sinful evil act by one individual? Not so cool at all because one can tell the same tale but switch the ethnic origins around where the evil doer is a Caucasian White from an Anglo country - and there have been many similar cases where one partner cheats on the other for financial gain. In some cases, it is even worse where the perpetuator murders the entire family to get a hold on their family wealth - and are then, protected by the laws oof their country from being prosecuted!
Bad things do happen to good people - which is an unfortunate thing and one would really wish it not to be so as the hurt created runs deep and long.
My personal sympathies and condolences to you and your family for the suffering caused by one heartless, insincere, unethical scumbag. However there are also many of the same types all across the world in many different countries and one can only hope that some kind of universal poetic justice or "karma" will call upon those types one day (it happened to my Mum's distant cousin who cheated on her father's entire fortune that was the sole cause of his death from a stroke due to the shock of the deception and that relative thought that he got away with it until one day, while living his life of luxury from the proceeds of his crime, he was suddenly struck totally deaf and blind - and at a young age of 45). So who knows?

Well, thanks for letting me know that, it's a comforting affirmation...I know something horrible is awaiting their whole group, as the Creator of the Universe had never let such serious evils slide unpunished,,, but let me help you out here...while you are technically right about "one person" though, when that person is high up in positions of power, (She was supposedly the best of Beijing University, because of her former "boyfriend"(who was also an adulterer as he was already married AND planned to ditch his wife to "marry" this golddigger(

Sino-American "friendship" is damaged between peoples of the two country, but recoverable with work, patience, and time. It's different between the two governments where friendship doesn't exist while compromise and pragmatism are dirty words. I expect fear, loathing, and distrust between the two governments to overshadow everything else until cooler heads prevail in both capitals (at the same time).

True - but which side began the rock throwing? Which side began sending their warships thousands of miles away from their own homeland to prowl the coast of the other and their spy planes to fly through their air space? Which side sent a salvo of sanctions against the other and banned them from participating in "international" scientific research ventures such as the "International" Space Station first? which side set up armed military bases just a few hundred miles away from the borders of the other side and cultivated animosity among the neighbors of the other side? Which side set up a USD$400 billion annual budget specifically to create misleading information and vilify the other side? Which side decided to start a "Tonya Harding - Nancy Kerrigan" effort to cripple one's opponent while the other side has done nothing similar?
One can come up with an entire list that could go on forever in encyclopedic proportions as to who started the fire and it will be that side that bears the responsibility in extinguishing it before it turns into a raging uncontrollable prairies inferno. Unfortunately, at this time of proceedings, the side that began the fire, has no wish to stop it and believes that if it blows real hard with its breath of hegemonic power, it will be able to push the flames towards the other side.

Do you know the definition of culture? It is what you do to get what you want.. Do you really want to watch a show to get to know the Chinese? Get real before the Chinese scoff at you because the best aspect of culture is how one people react to achieve anything they want.especially through many tough periods.
