After Musk spoke, Meloni delivered an implicit rebuke to the left, lamenting the desire to “violently erase the symbols of our civilizations in the US as in Europe.” “I know that we should not be ashamed to use and defend words and concepts like nation and patriotism, words that mean more than a physical place,” Meloni said. “They mean a state of mind to which one belongs.”

They campaign to win the position, then must make endless compromises to even shift the narrative or achieve a few policies. The structure of democracy is so slow and rife with checks and barriers, any new policies or changes are a victory. It is naive to think otherwise.

I did two scuba dives with Giorgia Meloni several years ago in Kenya in the Indian Ocean with a rough sea, strong wind and very strong underwater currents, prohibitive conditions that would have stopped many divers but not Giorgia, she never complained, she was a force then and she is even more so today. My statement above is based on a discussion between a local leader and an Italian project manager who came to meet me. The local person was referring to the fact that they are known for roadbuilders from ancient time. Perhaps they had a good understanding of soils that support the movement of heavy vehicles. My second statement was based on the fiat trucks that were the workhorses in Nigera at the time.
