- The Thunderhawk Gunship is one of the largest resin flyer models that Forge World manufactures. This complex kit is a substantial project and poses many and challenges and opportunities for the modeller to overcome and exploit.
Please join me in this video where I talk through how I built the Thunderhawk, a flight stand to display it and showcase a wide variety of features I magnetised on the vehicle.

Puts a smile on my face every time I see it on my desk, the build job and quality you put into this was exceptional. The pressure is on to do a as good a paint job on it as I can, I know said it plenty but again massive thanks.

TheTrickytrick69 very nice. I always loved the SoH colours but I went IF... then after a few squads and a levithain I decided I hated yellow and smartened up and went with mechanicum and titans.... In service to the Forge we prosper.

I was horrified at Squidmar building that metal relic. Building a rarest of rare models on some kind of time deadline, not cool. But that's me. He had the model and it looks like it came out pretty good. So, yea, Leakycheese would had made it a masterpiece

AWESOME!!!!!! I've always wanted to put one of these together. I've done titans, so many knights, tons of super heavies but i've never done a Thunderhawk or a StormBird.... so peanut butter and jealous ;)

Having done a few Forge World flyers now I think they are the probably the most difficult builds.
Big titans and tanks pose a challenge for sure, but the flyers take the most thinking through to design the strengthening elements.

It was a complex build for sure and a lot of time and effort went into it and I also heavily adapted the assembly sequence to accommodate the alterations.

Another absolutely awesome video. Such care in the details and quality. You never fail to amazing me Leakycheese. The end clips were amazing, perfect audio. Am i the only one missing the orizontal wing on the tail fin, present on the Mk1 version?

The high mounted horizontal stabiliser is missed on this new version. Luckily for us I have an unbuilt copy of this MKI Thunderhawk for future channel content ;)
I like the horizontal stab version very much. I'll be adding a scratch built stab to my recently purchased Thunderhawk.
Amazing job! I just picked up a THGS and I’m taking your advice on pinning to heart. Huge fan of magnetizing also!! This will be my first large model and though I have experience, anyone should approach this kit cautiously. I was curious about what adhesives you used and what you filled the gaps with?
Wonderful model, question on the magnets, for the missiles did you have them set up to only go on one way? When I magnitize stuff that is going on and should only go on one way I normally flip the polararity so that if you try and mount it the wrong way it won't allow you too.
I can never get comfortable with drilling resin with power tools. Doing the magnet holes on my warlord was the worst because of the size of bits.
But that pin stress test at the end put the fear in me haha.
True fact: the Thunderspin has been turned into a .gif and immortalised on the interwebs!
Many people have been terrified by that test on Twitter... I think Nikki Sullivan is permanently traumatised 😂
I still get palpitations thinking about magnetising my Warlord arm weapons. It's the finest work of that type I've ever done but by jove it was hard!

Great video! This model is my dream but the assembling part and base creation scares me a lot because of the cost of the model :( even after assembling several fw vehicles like Spartans, sicarans...
Even now i still love the idea of using power tools in the hobby

Seriously though, if that beast gets dropped your resin block tether system will be for naught as the whole thing will be smashed into a million bits.
That did make me laugh... imagine thinking about the 'best-case scenario' for dropping a thunderhawk!

I'd wager that if that model was dropped it would have a fighting chance.. like Cadia broke before the guard the resin parts would before my pins!
Jesting aside when I said dropped I should have qualified what was meant more. The mounting block was designed to survive a drop of around 6-inches as might happen if grip was lost when moving it about the gaming board. It would be able to survive that.

Lock S foils to Attack position!! re: cantilevering, I've done that on a few models, and i've had issues with it staying properly attached (like for instance, making an axle, and the wheels seemed to like to come off) - any advice on making sure that doesn't happen? Also, curious how you manage to keep it straight through the entire model? Cockpit magnets: Brilliant idea! Magnetising is amazing, esp the death strike missles and the upper wings, love it so much.

For the wing spar I used 2mm thick piano wire and for all others I used 1mm thickness.

I wish GW would release this and the mastodon in plastic and with more affordable prices. I dont like resin kits.. because they’re difficult to work with and because they’re pricey.

I used a hand-held pin vice to drill these holes which does work but takes a bit of effort and time to do. On the plus side it's gentle going with lots of opportunity to keep the hole on the correct alignment.
You could equally use a cordless electric hand drill as well - much quicker as long as you are careful to drill in on target. Especially so on the landing gear as if you go off-line you might punch through the side of the strut.
@@leakycheese thanks for your detailed response. I guess that for most of the magnetisation that you used 3x2mm apart from the larger ones on the attack wings? Also what glue would you recommend. Sorry for all the questions…

@@stevensmith305 For adhesive, most can be done with superglue. Really big parts like the wings can be stuck using a two part epoxy for maximum strength.

The width of the fuselage is about 80mm.
How did you make your Base?
Went through this video again now that I’m building my own thunder hawk and one thing that I think you should’ve gone over was the extensive filling work done attaching the wings to the fuselage. There’s some large gaps and I was wondering what you used to fill those in?
I filled those with standard yellow-grey Milliput. Hope that helps :)

There is no official base size on the Thunderhawk. The diameter of these was about 20cm I think.
You mentioned you did this for a client. I am potentially looking for such a service for a thunderhawk to be built for me like you have done here. Is this a service you still offer?
I bought one last week, and started assembling it yesterday. On the lower rear fuselage there are chamfers that are supposed to match up with one on the wings, but there is a mismatch in the lengths so the wings cannot sit tight against the body.
I'm going to cut and extend the fuselage chamfer, I cannot do anything with the ones on the wings since they're needed for the landing feet wells; has anyone else experienced this problem?
Also, it sucks that Forge World have since discontinued all Land Raider doors. I'm going to 3D print some Raven Guard embellishments instead.

Isn't the storm bird a bigger flyer? My understanding was that the Stormberg cost about twice as much and weighed about twice as much but the model didn't have as good a detail yet.

Okay, I've got a bit more time to think about this now, let me see. I believe I used the following magnet sizes, all Neodymium plated with Nicked.
These should be N52 grade:
Nose ramp 2x1mm
Canopy 3x1mm
Missile/pylons 1x1mm
Attack wing retaining mounts 1x1mm
These can be N35 grade:
Attack wings 5x3mm. For these I mounted two sets of magnets per wing. On each mount I used two magnets so that's a total of 8 per side or 16 for the model.

@@leakycheese well I got the magnets following your instructions, but the larger magnets was far too big for the attack wings and drilling holes that size would have destroyed the parts, and the smaller ones was not the right size either, so now i have to buy new magnets.
I am totally new to magnets and was hoping to get it done in my spare time, I dont have much of that these days as I am looking after my last living family member who is fighting cancer, so in the time I do have I am using the thunderhawk project to help distract me from the stress,
I am exactly at the stage of drilling a hole into my Hawk. But mine is 20mm and it is also fully made! :| eeeek
