    Just wanted to leave a comment saying thank you for putting all these videos out. I accidently locked the keys to this lock inside my storage trailer, so I ordered a cheap pick set from Amazon and thanks to you, I had the lock picked less than 10 minutes after Amazon delivered the set. "virtually impossible" my ass, I have never picked a lock in my life and I had this open in less time than it takes to smoke a cigarette 🤣

    Great job and very enjoyable as always. Did I say that I hate advertising? Lies most of the time in a way they can always find an excuse. "Virtually" does mean nothing if it not defined. They could have also stated: "100% Pick resistant for 99% of all people" ;-)

      Thanks. I've had some experience with the ridiculous transformation of product literature from the engineers to the marketing folks. It's a game a whisper down the lane with several layers of editors, and somehow "pick resistant" becomes "virtually impossible to pick." It's not an excuse, but I can see how things like this might happen.

    All the ProSeries locks I sell are pinned all six chambers, which avoids a larger problem than likelihood of advanced picking skills and ultra thin picks; and that is the prevelence of retail packaged products being shipped with repeating KA numbers over n over n over. When a client comes to a professional locksmith, every client gets their OWN differ, of a potential of over 50,000 bittings, once unusable bittings are eliminated . Of course, I offer the ProSeries, American, New Standard and PacLock with ASSA cylinders for higher risk situations for pick resistance and protection against unauthorized keys being produced.. I realize you and your friend Bill have a Jones over Master. I do not dispute their business practices are that of a vertical channel marketing company more so than that of a security products manufacturer.
    I am glad you have, albeit briefly; presented that Master sells both a premium and a knockoff of their own product. ALL the dept store models with the HEX shackle, are lower grade knockoffs, as well. On this one model, for some reason, they stayed with a round shackle. The ones with 930 ( 15K ) cylinder is from China, the 6230 is made in Milwaukee, and partially assembled in Mexico, then sent back to Milwaukee for completion.

    I would like to see that lock with better bitting and use some homemade security pins like a homemade ASSA Christmas tree. And for drill resistance, steel pins on position 1. The keyway is not too bad, since a 0.015 pick was required to pick it open.

    How to turn an American Lock into a Crapster Lock
    Step 1: Find an American 700-Series
    Step 2: Tell it that you're going to make it stronger by threading its pin chambers
    Step 3: Stupid lock agrees
    Step 4: Put under hex wrench, remove security pins
    Step 5: Cut corners in quality everywhere, remove American Pins, put in brass pins that vaguely resemble spools and pins (and not blobs)
    Step 6: Put lock back together
    Step 7: Put lock in recovery room
    Step 8: Hope and pray lock never ends up wondering what implants it got.
    (Or skip all this, and just get the American Lock in the firstplace)

    Would it really cost Master Lock so much to at least fill that 6th chamber jeez. Maybe a core from a Master safety lockout would fit in that lock. Nice video as always :-)

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Thanks. The whole 5 pins in a 6 pin core thing really annoys me. More than one lock company does this, then they charge more for the 6 pin version without the capital investment needed to make two different cores, actuators, etc... It's a bit silly, but that's the economic model.

    • @MikeBaxterABC
      @MikeBaxterABC 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Master makes M1 keyway cores for the Pro-Series locks, AND they also all come drilled 6 pin ... even though the standard is only 4 pin ... and they do NOT even make the M1 keyway in 6 pin.

    Hi Harry Deeper spools for more counter rotation with much thinner ends, a more paracentric keyway, 6 pins, closer tolerances, or maybe just closer tolerances with bevelled drivers and tapered key pins - that should do. Virtually pick proof? ... now that IS a challenge, and you rose to it well - as usual. Regards, Brian.

    Holy crap, I just picked my 6230, my first lock after playing with the see through "practice" lock that came with my pick set. It took about five minutes, and I know I couldn't have done it without watching your videos. There were obvious spool pins that produced counter rotation, and another that just clicked that I assume was serrated. Hardly impossible indeed, my first pick job ever!!!
    After closing the lock the key wouldn't go back until after a lot of fooling with the key opening. What did I do wrong?

  • @jacksuquett1191
    @jacksuquett1191 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well I must have a much older version. Can someone possibly let me know why the lock I gutted had 2 little discs on top of the key pins. I found a couple of these locks in the house i moved to with no keys. I just got into picking not to long ago and when I gutted one of the locks I noticed some pretty big differences when compared to other master locks that are rated 10 in the security scale. 1 difference was that there were actual security pins in this lock. It had 3 spools and two serrated's. It also had 2 discs each on top if each key pin. Like I said. Iv3 never seen anything like that before, especially on a master lock. I thought maybe it was a custom lock, but the pins machine work and patina match.

    • @petermichaelgreen
      @petermichaelgreen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The discs you describe sound like "master wafers", used when building a lock to take multiple keys as part of a master keying system. I guess whoever rebuilt it for the master keying system decided to put some security pins in while they were at it.

    Pin 2 is short where I'd expect it to be longer to match the bitting?

I took it to a locksmith and he said it would cost more than a new lock to open it-he gave me no help, but he is in the business to make a profit not to give his skill away for free. Depends on what you are locking up. You can spend well over $1,000 on a lock and $500 on a chain, but why do that to lock up a bicycle worth $250? That said, one of my favorite locks within a more practical price range is the Abloy 362. That is a very well-built lock that offers exceptional levels of pick resistance.

    i have the same exact lock. i wanted to make sure that it was a good fit for a locker at work... and the only way to prove that, was to pick it. I PICKED IT IN LESS THAN 20 SECONDS! DEFINITELY NOT A "PICKPROOF" LOCK! And with that, i will NOT be using this lock for work or in any case for that matter.

    Great job, you are masterlocks Kryptonite , I wonder if the CEO of Masterlock watches these videos?

      Thanks. I suspect someone at master lock watches, but they don't really care... because most consumers don't know enough to care. With luck, channels like mine will help change that.

    look at the key wow did they even bother to cut the key i think i only saw one low all the rest were high could u see the keys when u bought it i if i saw that key i would not of even bothered to buy it to easy to open u need lots of high and low cuts to keep things more interesting

      Yup, not so hot. But to be honest, it really doesn't matter much. With Master keyways and MACS, bitting should never be an issue opening these.

    Hey, LPL.... I don't know what kind of lawyer you are, but you should sue Masterlock for grossly misrepresenting thier products. What better person to take up a law suit against such an egregious company?

    The picker has a nearly endless amount of time to practice on a particular lock before he makes it look so easy on his videos. I wonder how he would do with a lock with which he was unfamiliar.

      Yeah, Im sure youd just happen to have the right pick and the rubber arms to get into the perfect position to pick this, hanging on a hasp with people walking by wondering what you're doing.
      Medeco locks are useless junk too, because tons of people can pick them on a table.
      Security is practices, not products. The moment you delegate your security to *any* lock, you've failed.
