Dell Canvas Artist First Impression (No Review Yet)

  • Dell invited me to check out the Dell Canvas. My artist friends and I went to try it and see how good it is at drawing, and whether it can compete with the Microsoft Surface Studio or the Wacom Cintiq.
    The unit I tried is still a prototype. There are still some software bugs. The product has potential but Dell needs to fix the bugs before releasing the retail version. I read that the price is going to be USD $1,800.

    It's good to finally have someone not only make a drawing monitor that is even better than a cintiq but offer it at a lower cost.

    By the way, everyone has a tiny bit of 'jitter in their hands' when ever they draw, or even hold something. It can get more pronounced as you get older. So perhaps some of the jitter people go through is because of the way they hold the pen, and natural jitter in your hands.

    As far as I’m concern Dell blows, my nephew bought a laptop some time ago and within a week one of the keys flew off, so he sent it back to them to repair it which took weeks or more to get it done. Every product from Dell and any review I’ve seen never comes close to any competition they try to go up against. Oh, and for $1800 you might as well go for the Wacom Cintiq line, imo.

      +Timothy O'Neill Some of their products are definitely not very good, but their monitors, the Dell XPS and Dell Precision are good.

      +Jack alope The Dell Canvas is not sold commercially yet. I've not used it except for that time in this video. So I can't say much else.

    How good is the palm rejection? Can you rest your palm while drawing without creating random lines from your wrist/palm

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Falcryx Palm rejection is still a big iffy. There is still tendency to create stray marks.

      At the art sites I frequent I've added you to my signature for forum posts. I don't have a blog or page of my own to put there so I figured I can help you out in that way. I'm on the forums almost daily for about an hour so I'm sending some traffic to your channel.

      James Barton 27 inch displays have been around for a while. I've used and reviewed Wacoms before. I've been using this at home for a month and it's great. The quality is awesome! I'm sure by the time it launches the software bugs will be gone.

    How does it compare with the XP-PEN?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TeleJazzer Right now XP Pen is better in terms of accuracy and lack of glitches. If the production model of Dell Canvas solves the glitches, then it could be good enougj

    Looks like there's a lag when you put the tip of the pen till it shows on the screen. Or is it just the computer is slow? Will a more powerful computer fix it?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't really remember since this video was made so long ago. I guess if I did not complaint about the responsiveness, it should be fine. There's always lag for such pen displays, even on the iPad Pro there's lag. It's not like the computer is slow. Lines are still very responsive, just that they will always come out slightly behind the pen tip. If you draw very fast it will be more obvious, and less obvious when you draw slow. If it's computer lag, whether you draw fast or slow, it will not matter.

    Are the zooms and page moving so choppy and slow because of a weak gpu? What are they using?

    • @teohyc

      They are using the new XPS All in One www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/xps-27-7760-aio
      Not sure if it's because of the GPU.

    • @hellohogo
      @hellohogo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks like they use the last generation amd Radeon chips, so that could be contributing to the slow response.

    how pixelated is it with a 1440p screen on a 27 inch

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +allthenamearestolen It's a difficult question to answer. It's like 1080p on a 24 inch display. I use a 1440p at home and its a perfectly comfortable resolution to work with.

    • @allthenamearestolen
      @allthenamearestolen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Teoh Yi Chie so u don't see much?? I read that as it has a 2560x1440 screen by 27 inch there is a ppi of 111

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +allthenamearestolen Yes, it may appear more pixelated than other screens, but the next bigger resolution is 4K and in my opinion 4K has to be used with at least a 30 inch monitor or larger, or else everything will appear very small even if they are sharp.

    This isn't any different from the final product. The final product doesn't rotate nor does is work with touch. Don't waste ur money on this, go with the wacom. The screen can't tell the difference between ur fingers n the pen, so the drivers sucks on this device. GO WITH THE WACOM, SAVE URSELF ALL THE FRUSTRATIONS IM CURRENTLY DEALING WITH. GO WITH THE PROS N NOT WITH THE IMITATION. such a let down of a product!

      @@teohycyes it actually did, it was sold at least in US and I'm not sure everywhere else. It had few major design flaws like no VESA mount, Windows only support, no support for the "totem" dial in most applications. You can still find it from time to time on used market.
      Btw. having an executive manager who didn't understand neither the product nor the targeted audience advertising it didn't help either 🤷‍♂️
