I see lots of comments about the exhaust brake and fuel economy. If youre familiar with The Fast Lane Truck they run their trucks through the "Ike Gauntlet" on I70 here in Colorado. I ran my LZ0 and 4,000lb trailer up and down that stretch of I70, 7% grade for 8 miles (13km). The exhaust brake controlled my descent with only 1 brake application. On the way up, i managed to maintain 65mph (105kpm) the entire stretch. Amazing engine. Fuel economy is out of this world, def consumption is a different story lol
I went from a 5.3 to the LZ0 with maxtow. Thenew LZ0 walk away from a 5.3 unloaded. And pulling there is absolutely no comparison. Plus I’m getting right at 45% better fuel economy pulling a 9000lbs enclosed trailer. GM hit a home run with this one.
What unicorn config did you find with the LZ0 and max tow? I could not configure one like that on Chevy site. Made me switch to gas for max tow on the 2023
@@BabyGators I got a 23’ GMC Sierra SLE. Crew cab with the longer 6’7” bed. I did a 2000 radius mile search. There was only 1 !! Blue truck that had what I wanted. Crew Cab, regular bed, LZ0 MaxTow and 4x4. Had to drive 2 states over to get it. So yes very hard to get. But I hear the Maxtow package will be widely available for the 24’ model year. You can not order it anymore for the 23’s
@@BabyGators I just picked up a hail damaged max tow LZ0 in Iowa last week. I don't think I can go back now, its an amazing truck. I really don't care about a dented hood when I have all the benefits @slickcasner4205 mentioned. Its been awesome.
@@brandoningle6543 that’s awesome. Have either of yall tried the ram ecodiesel for comparison? I’m fairly set on the Silverado or Sierra, but would prefer air ride from Ram
Amazing how GM went from nearly single handedly killing off the US passenger car/ truck diesel market in the US with the Oldsmobile 5.7 in the 70s to being the last manufacturer to offer a 1/2 ton diesel truck in the US.
@stevehirjak7824 I also heard that one of the workers that helped to develop the 350 diesel engine tried to tell olds/gm that the engine needed much more work done, and it was full of issues. The company ignored the worker and even fired him. Then he was proven right with the many issues that followed soon after
We got 2023 RST Tahoe with diesel, highway millage is insane, on one tank we went on 900km trip and when returned home still had 350km left to a tank. Love the sound as well.
I had a ‘18 crew cab with the 5.3l and now have a ‘23 AT4 with the LZO. There is no comparison, the diesel will run circles around the 5.3 all while getting 5-10 more mpg. It is better in all aspects I was blown away when I got my new truck.
I have the 3.73 max tow. Pull a 10000 lb camper. Average about 13 mpg @ 65 mph. I put air bags under the rear which helps with the weight. Tranny temp stays right @ normal temp too.
I have about 22 highway mile travel to work and usually run about 65-70 mph and see upper 20's to lower 30's consistently. Having the lower 3.73 gearing really doesn't affect the gas mileage when your not towing.
I'd like to see this LZ0 put up against a Powerboost to compare unloaded/loaded MPGs and performance. I'm a Ford guy, but very interested in this LZ0, plus i love the look of the GMC trucks!
I wrote a comment below, I drove 90 miles pulling 3000 total lbs at 70mph. I got 23 MPG, through the rolling hills of Iowa. I drove that same stretch with a 6.2L Chevy without a trailer and got 14MPG. After a week I've got 1k miles (not a normal amount for me) of towing, hauling with the bed and so forth. I would take this engine before the 6.2L and I drove the 6.2 since 2011.
Biggest advantage to the Powerboost is I plug my Travel Trailer into the 30amp 7.2 kilowatt converter in the bed and easily run my Trailer A/C and all. Even went with friends and plugged us both in. For mileage The Diesel wins. Power and Utility Powerboost. I like all the big three trucks owned them all.
@@brandoningle6543 Fantastic. I like all the domestic trucks don’t really have a favorite. My work truck is a Diesel. But it’s a 6.6 Duramax. 400 Watts however would not power my travel trailer which includes a 15,000 watt AC could never run on 400 watts. I plug into a 30Amp outlet in my PowerBoost and it runs off the Hybrid Battery and the truck automatically turns on and Idles a few minutes to charge the Battery and shuts off. 7.2 Kilowatts of power which could power a house.
I had a 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. I tow a cargo trailer and a boat (both weighting ~5000-7000lbs). I now have a 2023 AT4 1500 with the LZO, it is an amazing truck. Way more power then my old Ram and better fuel economy both towing and regular driving without a trailer. Factory exhaust brake helps a lot too when towing (My Ram did not have this). I haven't noticed any excessive oil consumption however I do not tow far (200-250kms each way). The Ram was a good little truck, the AT4 1500 GMC with the LZO is even better. My cousin owns a 2023 F150 Powerboost, and I get better fuel economy head to head doing the same route.
I have 12k miles on mine I have the trailboss and get about 27-28 mpg highway. 22-23 city. Great truck so far. It very close power to my 2002 duramax but has twice as many gears. Pulls grades like a dream, and the exhaust brake is decent for a 3 liter motor.
I wanted to try the exhaust brake when the truck is under load. I'm supper interested to see if it actually works or if GM put it there as kind of a selling feature. I know the 6.6L duramax exhaust brake is not the best so It will be interesting to see the 3L's
@@TheGettyAdventures I'm very interested in seeing how that exhaust break works. I'm also wondering what the difference is between the bigger 6.6 engine and the 3.0 in terms of daily driving... I know some of those big engines like to work a lot in order to run cleaner... This 3.0 have any of those concerns?
@@TheGettyAdventures that mpg is great to hear. I am interested in getting a 1500 and was curious how has it been doing on def usage and oil usage as I have heard that the oil usage can be somewhat significant.
@@sethwilkins9951 I haven't used any oil in mine and a tank of DEF seems to last around 3k miles. I only have a couple thousand miles on my Ultimate but I did just fill up the DEF. I put 2.5 gallons in to fill it and it has I think a 4 gallon tank. Most of it got used on a 700 mile trip. I average overall around 27 mpg the life of the truck and got as high as 37.5 on the highway.
Doesn’t that motor still have a belt driven oil pump that needs to be serviced? And that service requires removing the transmission? I new Broom always sweeps clean, let’s see how long it lasts.
I watched a review of this engine from some other channel and the guy said it was slow and gutless. So I bought one, that guy doesn't know what the heck he is talking about. This engine has all the pep my wife's 5.3 had and then some, I couldn't be more pleased. This engine will change things.
I’ve towed lots with my LZ0 and it handled far better than my 2022 Toyota tundra at towing in the Rockies and elsewhere, only issue I’ve found is that if your gonna tow with it a lot be mindful of your oil level as you may need to add a quart as I had too after 1600 kms towing which is annoying but something I’m willing to live with because after the summer ends I don’t tow my camper around as much and the oil consumption is minimal under normal use and I can make it to my next oil change without adding oil.
Agree 100%. When I tow 9000 lbs, then she uses oil and you need to be on top of it, but when not towing, no oil usage that I can tell. Easy to live with but we have to be mindful for sure.
I just recently bought this exact truck but with a standard short bed in a 24 year model and you review is spot on. I am down in North Texas where the wind blows 10mph on a calm day and I still am averaging 27.5 mpg on the highway and 24 in town, the powerband is perfect for my needs and I love just about everything about this little 3.0.
Trade in my 2015 2500HD 6.0 couple weeks ago for a new 2024 1500 LTZ with Max trailering and 3.0 diesel. Acceleration better and fuel mileage much better, 12.6 vs 28.5! Diesel cost about 20% more but not stopping to fill up every 3 days. Nice smooth comfortable truck.
Have a 2024 GMC Sierrra Elevatio 3.0 Max tow package love it 5 k towing around 16 MPG on Alaska roads pulls good passes at 68 mph with no issues. Around 27 mpg not towing love the truck. With max tow package towing trailer does not drive truck like most half tons on our bad Alaskan roads, warms up in below zero in under 3 miles. 5k on it so far.
I bought a 2024 ltz with the 6..2 in Feb. Bought a 2024 rst in may with te 3.0. 0 to 60 in the 6.2 was 6.1. in the rst it was 6.3. Put it in 4 auto and turn it loose, it will sit you back in the seat. Good job GM
I have owned both the LM2 and LZ0 and the first thing me and everyone that has been around both noticed is just how much louder the LZ0 is in comparison, in a good way. Also what makes both of these engines shine is just how good the 10 sp transmission is, to me its the best powertrain combo in the half tons.
I have the LZ0 with 14,000 and some towing. I love it. What a torque monster as compared to the 5.3 I also have. Love the subtle diesel sound. Hoping for a good life as this is my first diesel.
@@swimers100 The only additional items are the fuel filter and the DEF. The computer will tell you when to change the filter, it’s usually around 30,000 but I plan on doing it on my next oil change at 20,000. Cheap insurance to keep the high pressure fuel rails clean. It’s easily accessible and only costs around $30 to order it, when you buy the actual GM part. I think the dealer charges a lot more. But it’s really easy. The other item I worry about is the quality of diesel I buy. I’ve heard good and bad from truck stops and local stations. I do buy from truck stops when traveling across country. When local ( most of my trips) I buy from reputable newer stations in the area. No issues yet. The DEF I buy from both Blue and the actual GM stuff. Make sure you look at the date code for the Blue and store it in a cool place. Dont buy from a place that stores it in the sun if you are in the warmer climate. I’m in the Chicago area. So in winter it’s in the garage, summer time it’s in the basement. But I usually only carry one or two extra containers. When not trailering, the tank full lasts a long time ( 5000-7000 miles) WHen towing it eats it pretty fast. But with the mileage I get I don’t care. You will love the truck. Like I noted above it’s a torque monster as compared to my Avalanche with the 5.3. And I do 40 mpg at 55-60mph on the flat highway. Towing a 7500 lbs RV, its double of the 5.3 (around 13-18) . But I’m pretty easy on the throttle. Oh one last thing, since it’s got a turbo, make sure when you start to give it some time to let the oil circulate to the turbo, lube the parts before you jump on it. Winter longer than summer. Also when I’m done , I’ll let the engine idle for a short time to let the oil circulate thru the hot turbo. When I’m trailering, I’ll leave it running when I get fuel. I never shut down if I’m on the move. Keeps the oil moving and cooling. Just some simple preventative measures to help it run long. All of this stuff I got from the forum and you tube owners with the same engine. This is my first diesel too, but no regrets. Well maybe the cost of the new trucks in this market. Sorry to be soooo chatty.
Thanks for posting this! - I live in Southern BC. I stumbled across my 2022 LM2 model brand new, as a cancelled order at a dealership. I bought it on the spot (last year) but now was thinking of upgrading to the new interior (and getting the added LZO). Only thing about it is you can no longer get the 6 passenger format in the LT model with the goodies (like mine) with the diesel. I need this due to the size of our family. In the custom models you can get it still (with the older interior in the 2023 models) however can't get the max town pkg (NHT rpo code) with the diesel right now either - as of today anyway (just checked again). So I was a bit disappointed, however the fact is - I just LOVE the power plant in these 3.0 duramax's. The fuel economy is insanely good. Towing my 8800lb travel trailer, I still get 15mpg towing flat which is nuts if you think about it.
The 3.0 diesel engine will out last , and pass more gas stations than the 5.3. I haven’t heard anything about engine issues with the 3.0. But the 5.3 from what I’ve heard the last year or so was notorious for failure. If I’m going to spend a lot of $ on a truck I need to know that it will be reliable.
That is sad to hear about the 5.3L. I remember them being a good motor. I swear the emissions bs screws many gokd engines. Idk if that is their issue with them. It wouldn't shock me
Honestly your content is so good and so chill you should start a TV channel. Let's think about a name... - D TV (for diesel) - 17:1 TV - I6 TV - Undersquare TV...
I agree, the truck really has that big rig Cummins burble. I liked it so much I switched brands and bought one with the 10-speed and 3.73's. The HP is just okay but man I love that low RPM torque. I haven't noticed any problems with GM brakes. They got a lot better in the 2014 and newer trucks. They finally started using nitro treated rotors and Akebono hardware. The 2019 and newer uses ZF's electric brake booster which other companies are starting to use as well. I won't miss the hodgepodged vacuum pump setups that GM and Ford have been using in some trucks.
love this thing, made my mind in may that i was gonna buy one, was going for an at4 3.0 but i think an elevation would b better for me has better mpgs ( i drive alot ) and the only thing im missing out is on the grill, tires ( which i wont keep stock ), kalahari seats, and ventalated seats. i could go without them to b fair elavation here i come !!
I have a 2011 ecoboost with max towing and it tows awesome! I love diesels so this 3.0 Duramax may be in the running or my next truck even from a Ford guy. I would love to hear how the max tow with 3.73 gears perform. wondering also if the MPG non towing is still just as good.
Have the previous gen and absolutely no complaint about acceleration and power - coming from a 3.5EB. High end accel may be a little less but it feels good and wants to pull as much as I need all the way up to 80+.
Nothing wrong with the first gens! felt great to drive, but yes the second gen has a little more top end. regardless when towing its the bottom end torque that really pulls these trucks forward and both 3L's are putting down great torque.
@@TheGettyAdventures yep, just speaking to my experience. I have an at4 with the stock 20’s and less aggressive tire and get about 21mpg combined, have heard a lot of stories of better. Best 25 mile average is 33mpg. Pretty amazing, and on a long trip I may get 23-24 depending on terrain and wind. Where the newer model really shines is interior fit and finish, imo, mine feels a bit cheap for what it is.
@@Waffe92 GM 10 speed is night and day better than the ford 10 speed, who knows why, but also paired with the 3.0 it may have been the smoothest powertrain I’ve had.
Gee, thanks a lot. As a happy owner of a 1st gen 3.0l that is paid off, you are making me want to spend money with no good reason other then, I want. 🤣
GM recommends top tier diesel, which is virtually impossible to find. The alternative is to use AC Delco diesel additive at $18 US per tank. What are your thoughts on running regular diesel with or without an additive?
I use Hotshots and its nowhere near $18 a tank. Its $18 a bottle but I think a bottle is good for like 400 gallons. Plenty gas stations around here have top tier gas but none that I have found have top tier diesel
@@JesseLJohnson I can find top tier gas all day long but the only top tier diesel anywhere remotely close to me is 50 miles away. So basically one top tier diesel station for 400,000 people.
@@AlaskaErik At least you have some. I have 3 different houses and at all 3 if you look at the top tier website there isn't a single gas station that shows top tier diesel anywhere. 50 miles is better then nowhere lol. We have Costco at all 3 houses too and they sell top tier fuels and I heard their diesel is top tier but none of the 3 Costcos we have sell diesel only regular and premium
That is about exactly what my truck averages. I have got as high as 37.5mpg according to the truck on the highway. I have a Denali Ultimate so it has the 323 gears can't get anything besides that with the Ultimate.
@@davidleeosbourne2727 i know that for the 10 speed Allison transmission the ford did something better than Chevy despite it being the same transmission or almost the same? I baby the truck and never towed.., and it came with the towing package..
Thank you for posting and sharing such a thorough and thoughtful review. I just purchased a 2024 1500 ZR2 Bison with the Duramax 3.0 LZO. Given the owners manual recommends the use of only top-tier diesel and how scarce access to such diesel is not only in my area in California, but also nationally, lam wondering what other Duramax LZO owners use to fuel their trucks. Chevron diesel No. 2, etc.
Your better off to stick with your 2.7 ,less cost for fuel ⛽ Diesel $1.00 to $1.20 more per gallon, add in the cost for DEF,add in the mandatory $3000 repair bill for the replacement of rubber band drive belt for oil pump. The 2.7 comes out a winner for lower operating cost, longer life with proper maintenance and non abuse driving habits!
Why lease? Cheaper to own, just buy out your 2.7 and be done with it .The 3.0 already comes with a $3000.00 repair bill for oil pump driver rubber band NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY! With inflation bump that bill up to $3500!
I was wondering how this diesel does . Is it like other diesels where they're more appropriate for long trips, like to be driven hard, run hot to burnoff carbon, etc.
I love my 3.0 Silverado but I hate the seats , so uncomfortable, also the trasmision acting weird sometimes, can hear clunk and feeling at low speed when I stop
Keep in mind OP that the LZ0 weighs 467 pounds and makes 495 foot pounds of torque. That is 35 foot pounds more torque and is 67 pounds lighter than the 6.2l. The 5.3 is just a tad lighter than the 6.2 but but falls 112 foot pounds of torque shy...
If you were going to use this truck to haul a 1200 pound slide-in camper (no towing), would you equip it with Z71 package or max tow package? I will be doing some off-roading getting to camp sites, but nothing extreme.
GM said one time they will stop making cars/trucks except HD's starting 2035. Would you say buying HD for say 12 yrs of ownership time span could ensure one would have available parts longer than say for 1500?
Hold up, did you say with correct gearing and set up that could tow up to 13,500 pounds. And if that is the case is that from gooseneck? I thought this was only rated for a 9K at bumper.
Question. Since you're a diesel mechanic. What do you think the reason was for gm changing to steel pistons? On the LM2 I notice on mine I can hear some diesel fuel knock what some call it, on hard accel. BUT, after watching some videos from Power Proven Diesel here on youtube, they have that EXACT same sound due to the injection timing. Do you think GM went to steel so people wont hear that knock so easily?
He talks about it on his Powerstroke video. Steel is stronger and expands less. So you can use less material and have tight tolerances in the cylinder which = +power / +Efficiency I’d like to see it on the big Dmax next go round
I'm not an engineer by any standards but my guess as to why they went to a steel piston is because of strength and heat resistance. the piston material typically wouldn't correct any knocking (other then maybe piston slap). on this updated gen they have changed the fuel injectors and probably re-tuned the injection timing/flow. but to answer your question, no I don't think the steel piston were to quick to fuel knock.
Ya those short steel pistons add a lot of strength, basicly meaning you can shove more air and fuel into the engine and not worry about cooking the top of the aluminum pistons
Kind of a toss up between theses pistons and knock. The aluminum pistons had longer skits which normally more stability (less rocking) in the cylinders which would mean les slap. On the other hand if they closed the clearance between the steel pistons and the cylinders that could negate the potential of the shorter skirts to rock more. My gut say the material change had to do more with surviving the higher heat and stress of the improved performance numbers.
Have a '17 Tundra with a 5.7. While I haven't had any issues with it, I'm just a bit tired of it as well as the fuel mileage (14 mpg and 9 mpg towing). I have a 5000lbs boat that I tow almost every weekend, rest of time is city/hwy to and from work. How is the 3.0L holding up? Issues? Should I trade?
Hey man thanks for all your videos, they're super informative. Quick question, I'm thinking about buying my first HD diesel truck but I'm pretty new to the diesel world, if you were gonna spend your own money would you purchase the 2023 Ford 6.7 HO or the 2024 GMC 6.6, also would you choose the 7.3 gas or 6.6 gas, I know all these engines have their pros and cons I'm mostly concerned with long term reliability. I appreciate your opinion, thanks for your help.
@@TheBuckyLumberCo the warranty is there in case the emissions garbage destroys your truck too soon lol with a deleted diesel and Allison trans, you don't need a warranty brother.
Have you had your engine go into slow down mode? Engine light comes on and then it says to slow down, usually resets itself after a couple starts, but this time is died on me and I had to stop and restart to get home. Called on-star they show it as a fuel management system error. This is the 3rd time. 2023 Chevy 1500 Trailboss with the 3.0 diesel.
Ya this is probably an aftreatment issue. usually it will throw the truck into a de-rate. weird how it suddenly goes away. does the dealer tell you what the code is? it should be stored when they plug into it.
Have you done a video on diesel deletes? If so can’t find it…. I’d like to hear your opinion in regards to performance, life of engine, and what happens to the engine when you delete. (Irregardless of regulatory perspective)
The LM2 was betrayed by the transmission shift logic which was tuned like it was mated to a gas engine. It was too eager to downshift instead of letting the engine's torque do the work. The transmission tuning with the LZ0 is definitely tuned to hold gears taller gears and pull through the low RPM torque band.
It's unbelievable to me that you can be going 80, 90 and 100 mph on a two lane road and NOBODY is in your way! I have this motor in a SLT GMC and sometimes all I want to do is just open her up and drive, it really feels like the motor wants that, I can't get people out of my way long enough to be able to do that though. It's aggravating.
Alex, question for ya. I'm seriously considering this truck for a new vehicle. But your previous video basically told me to expect to separate the engine and tranny at some point to replace the fuel pump. I was wondering if you could simply cut the fuel and sensor lines and remount tbe pump along the frame while running new lines to it?
Hey bud i have a 2021 toyota tundra you think its worth trading up and did you have any issues so far with oil consumption or injection problems ? thank you please let me know
@@frankkboy25 Oil consumption is slight. Although I haven't had to add any oil between oil changes. No injector issues. I have added a aftermarket fuel filter from VSE and I have a Catch can on order from VSE as well.
Greetings Alex. Once again GMC scores with three points in favor. Performance, Quality and Reliability. Best mpg (km/l) either in city or highway. Today my favorite is undoubtedly the GMC. But the other boy from the town is a guy called "Hurricane" and he is presumed by a "Rebel" boy also 3.0 liters diesel; by the way his house is in RAM. I wish you could introduce it and put it to the test. As usual; You make my Sunday fabulous and the WEEKEND GREAT with your excellent videos, experiences and comments. I send you a BIG HUG 😮, my best wishes 😊 and BLESSINGS FOREVER! 🙏 Thank you.
Happy you like the video! and ya this GMC with the 3L is an awesome driving truck. I'm really looking forward to when RAM drops their 3L gas engine. that inline 6 although gas will be very torquey and fun to drive.
Would you recommend this motor instead of the 5.3 liter V8 as I put about 55,000 km's per year. I have been watching many videos and have concerns with the fuel pump and drive belt to fix within GM's intervals etc and the price of diesel being par with regular gas plus the additives as where I life I can't buy the TOP TIER diesel as they state to use, never had a diesel so very unsure.
Very curious about the towing loop test and also how you can get 3.73 with this engine, since I've seen no such option right now in the configurator. (I might be blind and can say the GM Canada website is ... confusing)
I decided to trade in my 2014 eco disaster for a stripped down single cab 2019 Cummins then fully deleted it. Daily driving 19+ mpg around town on the highway getting hand calculated 23-25 mpg at about 65-70 mph I really don’t see the need for the little diesels after owning one.
Ive never owned a diesel....no need for a hd either. Ive owned several EBs,several Chevys(last had the 6.2L). My 6.2L was a disaster.....multiple lifter/pushrod failures, that iffy 8 speed, and highway vibes. Went back to an EB and have never had a major issue with any of the 3 EBs ive owned. Towing a 6k lb trailer in southern Alberta wind and hills the EB sucks gas hard😮 If i was to buy another GM the 3L diesel is the only engine that interests me. 5.3L feels like dog after driving EBs and 6.2Ls,and im still scarred form the 6.2L disaster. One other thing....fuel tank size. Come on GM.....94L? Once you have 136L tank 90 some feels pathetic. Living in Alberta tho how do these things handle winter? Short trips, cold weather, cold starts?
With 3.73 the 3.0 is faster than the 5.3. There are several videos of this motor beating the 6.2 off the line before it catches ans passes it around 45mph.
probably something to do with off-road shocks, they aren't as load bearing as standard truck shocks. Kind of like why the Raptor and the TRX can't tow anything close to the standard trucks. Just a guess though
No one knows what a liter is in North America, outside of Canada. Add some MPG info please. Other than the fact the I have no idea what 9 liters per 100 km means, great video.
Quiet, power and MPG…Oh wait, it’s Diesel, Diesel bad! 🤣 Our countries were built on Fossil Fuel for a reason, can’t wait for the Z71 Tahoe with this engine….👊🏻🇺🇸
In terms of the turbo, do you need to let this engine idle for a little bit to cool the turbo before shutdown? My wife and I are considering buying a Yukon with this engine in it, and I was going to install a command start with a turbo timer on it.
For me my subdivision allows me to drive slow to let things cool down before I shut it down. However, when I’m towing my 8000 lbs trailer I leave it run when I stop for fuel to keep the oil circulating and I let it idle for a bit when I’m at my destination before I shut her down. Have heard of too many horror stories of old turbos so a minute or two seems to me as a good time frame to help cool things down. It’s an experiment and let’s see after 100,000 miles. lol
I have a 2021 1500 Duramax. At 18k mil replace transmission. 20k mil replace DPF system. Since then almost every month at the dealership because the check engine light is on. Most unreliable truck that I ever purchased
I'm 6'5" 235 and the seats are plenty good for me, the only complaint I have is the head rest doesn't flex forward so it's almost a useless feature as you actually have to lean your head back to contact it.
So still like them. Mexico built and I’m not saying I’m an expert at all but my buddy that’s worked for GM for probably 3035 years well he says those new GM diesels blow up all the time at like 200 250 miles kilometres a Chevy dealer and that’s all he does. New motors, so it’s not two not three or four Another buddy bought a beautiful brand new $130,000 gorgeous gorgeous you didn’t get 5000 km out of this motor blew up and it had a lift kit from factory or from from the dealer and they give him a hard time to replace his motor, they said it’s all because of the lift but how would a lift have anything to do with how a diesel engine runs I think about it especially like a 4 inch lift and lift spring lift. I’ve always been a Chevy fan and that’s a sad statement.kit Because been such a shame it appears it’s all about profit. It’s not about reliability or anything like that. They should take some training from Toyota Toyota uses the best of the best and they shareholder values and they should go for a lot of miles I had a diesel out of the Land Cruiser BJ-40 the bees were the first ones and they came out with a 3B well I got about 680,000 km on that. Be trucks rusted out but Runs great I wish it was 3-D because parts are a lot easier when I do after rebuild it with it and I think buy a new body from Columbia for the FG for BJ’s I’ve had so many FJ 40 I love them and I used to call the six cylinder out and stick in a small block or a big block Chevy Then when I bought this diesel BJ I no longer ever took engines out. I love the diesel. It’s like a tractor. It goes anywhere. But we did have to change to the FG cruisers and 2007 looks like new I live in Alberta Canada, but my Quanset I got a 214 concrete gray loaded with 87 kms for one white wife 2007 back it in Such a pity that the fj cruisers or the I forget the name of like a pathfinder like the longer bigger but bought buddy bought those for a trailer. Do you have the eight and you went to a 60 well these new ones they got a four-cylinder turbo charged like what they put in their little raves. Shame on all these vehicle builders. So I just wanted to comment on the new diesel engines that are built to Mexico. I got nothing wrong with against Mexicans at all, but corporate greed, such a pity because there was nothing like a Chevy
So I hear there's a rubber belt that runs the oil pump in the engine. Have to remove the transmission to replace it at 150,000 mi. $3,000 parts and labor.😅
Ima tell you how. I pulled a 3000 lb bass boat from GA to NY and back, passing people going up the mountains at 75 mph. It's awesome. Buy a Chevy and save like 20k, though.
There isn't much price difference at all between a Chevy and GMC if getting similar trim. I have a brand new Denali Ultimate and its more but its the most expensive truck they make and I still found High Countries that aren't as loaded as what I have that were only $7k cheaper. A standard Denali and High Country are nearly identical in price same with pretty much any trim. Only way you are paying $20k more is if the GMC is a couple step higher trim then the Silverado

We will see what this truck holds in longevity when it comes to towing real frequently. I don’t think you can compare this to fords 3.5 EB with the horsepower and torque it makes being a gasser.

Amazing how GM went from nearly single handedly killing off the US passenger car/ truck diesel market in the US with the Oldsmobile 5.7 in the 70s to being the last manufacturer to offer a 1/2 ton diesel truck in the US.
My mom had one of the Buick Diesels that led to the lemon laws. 3 years of fighting with GM to get them to put in a new engine.

I have the 3.73 max tow. Pull a 10000 lb camper. Average about 13 mpg @ 65 mph. I put air bags under the rear which helps with the weight. Tranny temp stays right @ normal temp too.
What is your rpm at 65 mph with no trailer with those gears, and what is your mpg without a trailer?
I have about 22 highway mile travel to work and usually run about 65-70 mph and see upper 20's to lower 30's consistently. Having the lower 3.73 gearing really doesn't affect the gas mileage when your not towing.
I'd like to see this LZ0 put up against a Powerboost to compare unloaded/loaded MPGs and performance. I'm a Ford guy, but very interested in this LZ0, plus i love the look of the GMC trucks!
Ford won’t keep up on mpgs.
Power and
Utility Powerboost. I like all the big three trucks owned them all.
@Hyrodeniamandibulata My LZ0 has a 400 watt A/C power in the bed and power through the trailer adapter as well. Not an issue for me
@@brandoningle6543 Fantastic.
This engine has pros and cons from a mechanical standpoint, but not from a driver's perspective. It's ibviously an awesome engine to drive.
Very fun engine to drive and the fuel economy is simply unbeatable.
Is it normal for diesels to consume oil?
I just recently bought this exact truck but with a standard short bed in a 24 year model and you review is spot on. I am down in North Texas where the wind blows 10mph on a calm day and I still am averaging 27.5 mpg on the highway and 24 in town, the powerband is perfect for my needs and I love just about everything about this little 3.0.

I wanna buy this truck as my first diesel. What maintenance do I have to do /watch out for? Thanks

Nothing wrong with the first gens! felt great to drive, but yes the second gen has a little more top end. regardless when towing its the bottom end torque that really pulls these trucks forward and both 3L's are putting down great torque.

I was wondering how this diesel does . Is it like other diesels where they're more appropriate for long trips, like to be driven hard, run hot to burnoff carbon, etc.

Me forgetting this was in Canada: "what in the fuck is L/km!?"
So you can use less material and have tight tolerances in the cylinder which = +power / +Efficiency
I’d like to see it on the big Dmax next go round
@@bullmoose8606don't quote me on this but I believe the 2024 Duramax 2500's now have steel pistons
Getting sorta similar numbers from the lb7 and also lly Duramax v8s with a 3 liter inline 6!? Heck what's not to like ?
You need to do a towing test video with this engine!!
Ya this is probably an aftreatment issue. usually it will throw the truck into a de-rate. weird how it suddenly goes away. does the dealer tell you what the code is? it should be stored when they plug into it.
Didn’t get the actual code, but if it doesn’t go away by Monday I will take it in and find out what it is, thanks for the reply.
maybe it's possible to make it a twin-turbo for more performance
Only thing I don’t love is how the truck sits right on the ground. N o ground clearance
GM need to put this engine in their reg cab trucks
Have you done a video on diesel deletes? If so can’t find it…. I’d like to hear your opinion in regards to performance, life of engine, and what happens to the engine when you delete. (Irregardless of regulatory perspective)
The LM2 was betrayed by the transmission shift logic which was tuned like it was mated to a gas engine. It was too eager to downshift instead of letting the engine's torque do the work. The transmission tuning with the LZ0 is definitely tuned to hold gears taller gears and pull through the low RPM torque band.
if you were to buy a newer gmc used, would you get the 5.3, 6.2 or the 3.0 diesel?
Another great video! Would love to see some Getty Adventures merch :)
Well thank you Lindsay! I'll have to look into something like that!
Do you think aftermarket drilled/slotted rotors would help dramatically on the brakes? And good, quality pads?
Installing Stainless steel braided hoses always seems to fix the older GMs, I’m sure it would fix these new ones too
Better than an eco diesel for sure. Do you have any Power Wagon mod plans?
It's unbelievable to me that you can be going 80, 90 and 100 mph on a two lane road and NOBODY is in your way! I have this motor in a SLT GMC and sometimes all I want to do is just open her up and drive, it really feels like the motor wants that, I can't get people out of my way long enough to be able to do that though. It's aggravating.
It's Canada. Kilometers per hour, not bald eagles.
Needs a bigger DEF Tank for towing even a light load.
I have a 2023 GMC LZ0 with 3.73's . If you are ever in California hit me up. You can take it for a spin.
Thank you.
Happy you like the video! and ya this GMC with the 3L is an awesome driving truck. I'm really looking forward to when RAM drops their 3L gas engine. that inline 6 although gas will be very torquey and fun to drive.
You should try the 3rd gen
Would you recommend this motor instead of the 5.3 liter V8 as I put about 55,000 km's per year. I have been watching many videos and have concerns with the fuel pump and drive belt to fix within GM's intervals etc and the price of diesel being par with regular gas plus the additives as where I life I can't buy the TOP TIER diesel as they state to use, never had a diesel so very unsure.
Very curious about the towing loop test and also how you can get 3.73 with this engine, since I've seen no such option right now in the configurator. (I might be blind and can say the GM Canada website is ... confusing)
my 23 has 3.73. you have to get max tow with the 3.0 to get the 3.73.
This motor is so cool.
I like it.
Ive owned several EBs,several Chevys(last
had the 6.2L).
My 6.2L was a disaster.....multiple lifter/pushrod failures,that iffy 8 speed,and highway vibes.
Went back to an EB and have never had a major issue with any of the 3 EBs ive owned.
Towing a 6k lb trailer in southern Alberta wind and hills the EB sucks gas hard😮
If i was to buy another GM the 3L diesel is the only engine that interests me.
Short trips,cold weather,cold starts?
Aluminium block not good for heavy towing. Alex mentioned that but no one noticed...
Let's see how that wet belt does a few years down the road
With 3.73 the 3.0 is faster than the 5.3. There are several videos of this motor beating the 6.2 off the line before it catches ans passes it around 45mph.
Now watch the price jump because it is so popular. Guaranteed. You just can't win these days.😂😂😂
Why isn't the max tow package available on the AT4? I see it on the SLT and Elevvation
probably something to do with off-road shocks, they aren't as load bearing as standard truck shocks. Kind of like why the Raptor and the TRX can't tow anything close to the standard trucks. Just a guess though
Off-road suspension isn’t designed for towing. And you can’t get it in the Denali either because of the air suspension.
Hi, can you do the engine review for L5P Duramax on 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500HD?
no vibration on my LM2.
That’s a inline six ?
yes sir.
No one knows what a liter is in North America, outside of Canada. Add some MPG info please. Other than the fact the I have no idea what 9 liters per 100 km means, great video.
I have no idea what a mpg means either my man😂
Quiet, power and MPG…Oh wait, it’s Diesel, Diesel bad!
Drive it like a gas motor. No need to overthink it
For me my subdivision allows me to drive slow to let things cool down before I shut it down.
3.0?
Sounds like you got a bad one.
Are you doing 106 miles a hour? Or am i looking at the wrong information on the dash😮
I hear the seats are incredibly uncomfortable in these trucks, is that true?
Opinions may vary, but I'm 70 yrs old, 6'2" tall & weigh 200 pounds, and the seats are fine for me.
I'm 6'5" 235 and the seats are plenty good for me, the only complaint I have is the head rest doesn't flex forward so it's almost a useless feature as you actually have to lean your head back to contact it.
Duramax 3.0 is Best. In europe only im live in poland
Спасибо за твою работу очень хорошо и информативно... Здоровья и благополучия дорогой...
Does it have an engine brake?
Yes…
So still like them. Mexico built and I’m not saying I’m an expert at all but my buddy that’s worked for GM for probably 3035 years well he says those new GM diesels blow up all the time at like 200 250 miles kilometres a Chevy dealer and that’s all he does. New motors, so it’s not two not three or four
Another buddy bought a beautiful brand new $130,000 gorgeous gorgeous you didn’t get 5000 km out of this motor blew up and it had a lift kit from factory or from from the dealer and they give him a hard time to replace his motor, they said it’s all because of the lift but how would a lift have anything to do with how a diesel engine runs I think about it especially like a 4 inch lift and lift spring lift. I’ve always been a Chevy fan and that’s a sad statement.kit
Because been such a shame it appears it’s all about profit. It’s not about reliability or anything like that. They should take some training from Toyota Toyota uses the best of the best and they shareholder values and they should go for a lot of miles
I had a diesel out of the Land Cruiser BJ-40 the bees were the first ones and they came out with a 3B well I got about 680,000 km on that. Be trucks rusted out but
Runs great I wish it was 3-D because parts are a lot easier when I do after rebuild it with it and I think buy a new body from Columbia for the FG for BJ’s
I’ve had so many FJ 40 I love them and I used to call the six cylinder out and stick in a small block or a big block Chevy
Then when I bought this diesel BJ I no longer ever took engines out. I love the diesel. It’s like a tractor. It goes anywhere.
But we did have to change to the FG cruisers and 2007 looks like new I live in Alberta Canada, but my Quanset I got a 214 concrete gray loaded with 87 kms for one white wife 2007 back it in
Such a pity that the fj cruisers or the I forget the name of like a pathfinder like the longer bigger but bought buddy bought those for a trailer.
Full of shit much?🤣
When are the delete kits coming out for these!
I saw a few. Can't wait for my warranty to run out.
@@birddogbriar4335 you have links?
So I hear there's a rubber belt that runs the oil pump in the engine. Have to remove the transmission to replace it at 150,000 mi. $3,000 parts and labor.😅
Yeah, faulty design.
#junk.
Ima tell you how. I pulled a 3000 lb bass boat from GA to NY and back, passing people going up the mountains at 75 mph. It's awesome. Buy a Chevy and save like 20k, though.
How is the MPG while towing? Which rear axle ratio does yours have? TIA
@@chadclark5204 I just towed a 2500lb flatbed with 1000lbs of timber 90 miles at 70 mph 2 days ago. I have the 2023 3.0l chevy RST. Rural eastern iowa so lots of rolling hills. 23 MPG.
@@brandoningle6543 Thank you. That is impressive. What rear axle ratio?
@@chadclark5204 3.42
We will see what this truck holds in longevity when it comes to towing real frequently. I don’t think you can compare this to fords 3.5 EB with the horsepower and torque it makes being a gasser.
correction those engines are lm2 buddy
