- Christopher Hawthorne is a renowned architecture critic, educator, and filmmaker. From 2018 to 2022, he served as the first Chief Design Officer of the City of Los Angeles, overseeing the design of major construction and infrastructure projects, and launching initiatives in housing, urban planning, civic memory, and public art. As the architecture critic for the Los Angeles Times from 2004 to 2018, his work has also been featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic, among others. Co-author of “The Green House: New Directions in Sustainable Architecture,” Hawthorne has taught at prestigious institutions and collaborated with KCET-TV, earning two Emmys for his documentaries on architecture and urbanism in Los Angeles.
