    Tatiana is a perfect use case for how prejudice gets smashed. She didn't receive any special treatment, nobody gave her an award or success because she was a female in a male dominated setting, nobody shamed anyone into liking her, she just melted everyone's fucking face off by being a complete badass. Someone this talented and charismatic can crush all but the most ignorant biases. She's not the first female performer to pull this style off, but I think you'd be hard pressed to name another female vocalist with the same amount of the "it" factor along with playing with such a talented group of musicians. Jinjer has an extremely high ceiling for popularity and success and it's largely because this woman is too good to dismiss and is competitive (talent wise) with her male counterparts.

    • @srhiers29
      @srhiers29 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This.
      EDIT: Let me raise one quibble. What her success shows is that metal was never prejudiced against anyone who had the talent to do it well. Perhaps there was a time when it was less inviting and a more daunting prospect for some. However, in my estimation, metal has always been about talent above all else; or, to put it more succinctly: metal is a meritocracy.

    • @jamesnorthan3284
      @jamesnorthan3284 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@srhiers29 But there has always been that stigma in metal or life in general for that matter that a woman cant do a man's job...especially metal. Tatiana has completely obliterated that stereotype with her abilities. Good luck finding a guy who can do both clean and guttural vocals as beautifully and smoothly as she does...live!!! Yes there are other women out there that do both clean and guttural vocals, but...just my opinion...Tatiana reigns supreme. Not to mention the rest of the band who are geniuses and completely in a league of their own! Just my opinion.

    • @srhiers29
      @srhiers29 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jamesnorthan3284 I've never seen a single person say a woman can't do metal; and, the enthusiastic reaction when a woman does it only proves the point further. The stigma is that metal fans are a bunch of misogynists even though there is little to no evidence to prove it. Tatiana has gained her fame on talent, not genitalia. If she weren't good at what she does, no one would pay attention, regardless of her sex. Or, she'd be given undeserved accolades because of her womanhood.
      As for her vocal talents, she reminds me of Corey Taylor in regards to how effortlessly she can go back and forth. Regardless, I'd say she's in the top five best metal singers currently around.

    I'm a chick, I'm into metal - have been for literal decades - and I freakin' LOVE IT whenever y'all dudes get taken aback by women vocalists who growl/scream. It's honestly kinda hilarious to see dudes "lose it" over stuff like this.. (And believe me - first time I stumbled upon Arch Enemy back in the day, I was surprised too; I hadn't seen a woman growl before - at least not like that.) Haters gon' hate no matter what you say. You seem like a cool dude, who enjoys *music* and would not give two shits about what's in the pants of the vocalist of any given band. You do you.

    • @TankTheTech
      @TankTheTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Thank you so much! And yeah, I totally get your point. The shock value of hearing a woman in metal screaming her face off is still there because people are so used to seeing dudes doing it all the time. I have a feeling those days may be over soon, as more and more women are bringing it in the metal scene harder than ever before.

    • @thegeekysaga

      @@TankTheTech Yeah, exactly. Plus - I came from a pretty hardcore blackmetal-fanbase, so my "taste" in growls were already a tad different than - say - your average thrash/deathmetal fan (as the style of growl/scream are different).
      For me, though, it was also the epiphany of "Heeey... I can do that - she does, I can too" - which is always cool :)

      Yeah and there are people like me, 50 years old, 40 years more or less deep into Metal (lost the drive in the 90's and missed the whole Death/Norwegian BM Time, i came back in the early Millennium..i had trouble in the beginning liking Growls/Screams/Harsh Vocals).
      And yes in my younger years i was such an Idiot to say: "Female Vocals...No Way!!"
      But with age there comes wisdom, i don't care about genres/subgenres, either i like it or i don't, easy as that. So i can easily switch from Nightwish to Mgla on a Music evening/weekend.
      The same nowadays with female vocals, i am searching for Bands using it, and i also don't care if SHE is using cleans, growls, screams...it has to fit and i have to like it.

A while back I was listening to Jinjer and my 6 year old daughter heard it and said it was cool that Tatiana "can sing like a boy too" lol. I think the whole thing about how Tatiana shocks people because she's a female doing that growl has much less to do with her being a woman and far more to do with the fact she does it *BETTER* than most , if not all, her contemporaries. (obviously not most reaction videos -- She's used as bait for vocal coaches to be astonished and scared -- though almost universally, they do end up admitting she's special in what she does). I do *not* like screaming most of the time. I find it a boring sound, obviously lyrically it's got no significant value to me, and most people who do it, do it very badly, far too much, or without much capability to do much else. The reason I like Jinjer, and specifically how Tatiana approaches it (and there are many bands who do this) is that it's used exactly as I would hope -- a different texture used in contrast to spectacular clean vocals. Almost all bands need two different people to pull that off... it just happens that Tatiana is a two-for-one in that regard, capable of doing the screaming better, with more control, and the ability to add significant inflection to those screams, AND her clean tone is as good as 95% of rock vocalists out there... especially her belt and ability to slide notes. So, yeah, you are right, you get to say she's better than most guys. I just don't think you need to even worry about the distinction though -- she's just plain better than most... period.

    If you want to see full production, headlining live songs I would probably suggest a couple songs they put out on the Napalm TH-cam channel that are "live in Kiev": Pit of Consciousness and/or On The Top. It's not an outdoor festival show but I think it's the closest to what you were asking for at the end.

    I don't know a single woman who needs a Paul (who seems to have taken one gender studies class too many) to defend her from being called a 'chic'. Virtually all of them are either absolutely okay with it or absolutely able to speak for themselves if they don't like it. Feeling the need to 'defend' women like that is indeed patronizing in itself because it suggests they are too weak to tell you what the do or do not like themselves. Never ever make the mistake to explain yourself or apologize to these people. It will only make them more annoying because they feel validated by that. You're doing a great job conveying honest, genuine and fun to watch reactions to great music. Thanks and keep on going :-)

    Yeah, they are still an up and coming band, unfortunately. They did a big upgrade to their stage production gear after this to make a bigger impact on the big festival stages and probably also to negotiate for better time slots. I take that to have been investing the money from their mostly soldout tours of Europe and North America later that year - unfortunately, that stuff is presumably sitting in storage now. :(
    From what I've heard they were going to end with Sit Stay Roll Over, but they were the first act of the day and there were some technical issues in the beginning so they had to end on this one even though it is probably their 4th lightest song after Pisces and I Speak Astronomy which are kinda tied for 2nd and 3rd lightest, with Tati putting everything into the end to kick as much ass with it as possible.
    Who Is Gonna Be The One official live is a great next song - just expect the unexpected haha. A good look at them headlining on a large stage with the new stage production is On The Top live in Kiev (Pit Of Consciousness at the same show is even better but save it until at least after you have seen WIGBTO - those are two of the three songs with the most savage growls when they perform them live, but PoC is 2.5 years later and Tati's vocal skills are always growing. };D> The 3rd, Home Back hasn't had a video released yet). To see what they are doing while doing regular tours while headlining in Europe, check out the official video of Retrospection which has the upgraded stage production that they are using in their European tours - I haven't seen videos where they've shipped the screens elsewhere, and they were notably absent in the Israel, Australia, and Latin American shows.

    Don’t listen to the haters, it’s not misogynistic to be surprised by a woman (or “chick” lol) who can growl like that, to say it is is disingenuous. How many woman can do this compared to men? Not many, the ratio is small, male and female vocal cords are very different. This is much harder for a female to do, to be impressed and amazed by it is very natural. To say that it’s misogynistic is virtue signaling BS, and anyone who want to bring that BS in here can GTFO

    Yeeeeessss, I knew you’d enjoy this one! Hearing how out of breath she was at the end and how incredible the vocals were through the whole performance really shows how amazing the control she has over her voice is, this is always going to be one of my favourite performances from any band I think , although I 10000% agree with the daytime slot thing, I’d absolutely love to see them with a set like Nightwish did in Ghost Love Score
    I’m still going to suggest Who is Gonna be the One live too though! You’ve heard her amazing switches and cleans, now it’s time for the amazing screams😊

    As I understand the history of the band is divided into 3 stages: 1. Non-commercial 2009-2014 (before the Donbass war) 2. 2015-2019, commercial, before world fame, 3. 2019-present - world fame. Features of the first stage: no studio albums, more punk, a different image of Tati: less tattoos, dreadlocks. Features of the second stage: studio albums, high-quality video clips, contracts, tours, change of drummer, and change Tatiana's image, high-quality progressive music. Their transition from the second stage to the third is Wacken 2019.

    It's not sexist to say those things. Metal is SUPER male dominent. So when something catches you by surprise and you use the word "chick", to then go on to praise the band. If someone takes that the wrong way, yeah, I can, see it. But they focus too much on that one word. They want to be offended.
    We live in a time of great, great, GREAT female metal and rock, female lead bands. Jinjer, nightwish, epica and arch enemy, to name just a few.
    So to get hate for a word while praising these incredible women is just stupid.
    They'd be embarrassed to see it.
    Do your thing dude 🤘 rock on 🤘

    About the day and night time... don't forget it's a festival in germany mostly visited by germans, if you tell them, after drinking 50 beers the evening before, the need to be at stage X at 5:37 AM the WILL be there ^^. Oh and about that Mysoginic stuff... there are genres that would happiely accept women and Metal is one of them. Look at nightwish, arch Enemy, Opeth and what not. When I look at Sarah Longfields Ukulele sessions i feel unworthy ^^. From my point of view the gender stuff is mood in music an a metealhead who says "Dude she sounds like a man!" normaly want's to tell you "This is AWESOOOOME hold my hat I want to bang!".

    9:01 - I know you probably never will get to do this one, but I'd really love if you could check the band SynlakrosS. Patricia Pons is also capable of switching very easily between her different voices (clean/scream/growl). But no one knows that band unfortunately so you won't see this request often and probably won't get to do it. But I personally enjoy SynlakrosS' songs more than Jinjer's actually (the rhythm is faster). But that's just personal taste.

    Wow, people can get intense over a simple comment. Women have been in metal for a long time, Sabina Classen from Holy Moses, Dana Duffey from Mythic and Demonic Christ, Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy, and my all-time favorite the late Dawn Crosby from Détente and Fear of God.
    And so many more women from heavy metal, speed, thrash, punk, hardcore, crossover, doom, death, black... I don't see misogyny at all. Maybe some men don't find women to be brutal enough for their liking, and that's ok. But chicks have been at it for a long time now.
    Also, might I suggest you react to Jinjer's Micro EP, it's a 20-minute little jewel.
    And their live version of Who's gonna be the one, too.

  • @ninjabiatch101
    @ninjabiatch101 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The "HOLY SHIT ITS A CHICK" mentality is weird.
    I totally think the same thing, and I get the vibe of "What you don't think woman can do it too?"
    And obviously its not that, at least not for the most part. Its the fact that generally the male voice is more naturally cut out for it, so if anything it shows the amazing skill these women have.
    Not to mention the fact that BECAUSE the metal scene is so misogynistic, usually women aren't as readily welcomed and applauded.
    Any metalhead who isn't an asshole wants more women in metal.

  • @Sparrow-Music
    @Sparrow-Music 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm honestly very very confused by the "chick/misogyny" comment - there'd be nothing weird or misandrist about a woman referring to a guy as "dude" which is colloquially the same - especially if they were praising them for thriving in a typically women dominated scene (the way Tatiana does with harsh vocals in a heavily male dominated scene).
    I can see some people maybe not preferring to be called it *personally* , but to push that rhetoric across the board and correct others seems like projecting, honestly.

    Yes there's quite a few good female fronted/all female bands out there worth looking/listening to. Worth mentioning is "Infected Rain" from Moldavia. A lot like Jinjer in so many ways. Check out the song "Mold". Also the band "Arch Enemy" from Sweden. Specially with their former vocalist Angela Gossow. She's a beast. Though many prefer their current singer

  • @m.b.5064
    @m.b.5064 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This whole gender/pc bs is so stupid & divisive. If you wanna make metal, go ahead. If you sing, you sing. if you scream you scream. No matter who you are. No one ever said women aren't "allowed" to scream. It's just naturally surprising & there's nothing wrong with that. Symphonic Metal is completely dominated by female singers. Hearing a man sing like Tarja would also be surprising to everyone. Doro is a Metal legend since the 80s. I' ve seen quite some female led Metal & Hardcore bands & never cared for 1 second who the singer is.
    Metal is for everyone & I hope it will stay free of the poison that is politics. ( What I'd love to see would be more women playing instruments. More "mixed" bands.)

    So the bit where u stopped and said you got called out by a dude for saying 'chick'. Men are called dude, bloke, guy, fella etc all day every day. Never in my 50 years have I heard a woman complain about being called chick. It's not meant as a derogatory term, in fact It's I've always heard it used in a complementary / positive fashion.
    To the alleged dude who posted that to you - white knighting for chicks / being an online feminist is not going to make them want to sleep with you okay. There are other words people sometimes use for women that definitely aren't complimentary, how about defending against those words? Either stop embarrassing yourself or hand back your man card mmk.

    Hey \o/ It was Wacken Mainstage, that means, there is no B class on it, only main acts regardless of the daytime. Just watch the crowd, it was totally packed and people go nuts whatever daytime it is. The magic of WOA \o/ Of course it has more impact and "effect" performing at late evening/night, but that is not really essential.
    Regarding Tatis singing: Here you clearly can see she is not a robot: Struggling to get air to be able to speak after the song and a bit like that even before the song. But performing the song there is so much breath control. I think she is not wasting ONE little breeze for anything else but phrasing her song and nailing every single note. Especially after the 12 seconds sustain she instantly went into the growls without any break and/or taking a deep breath. That is the difference between her and many others. Others have awesome cleans also but when it comes to the growls they pump in so many air. She, instead, has the same airflow all the time, regardless what she is doing. That is most impressive. Thanks for doing this video, curious about some more. Stay safe and rock on \o/
