For anyone who is interested; when Tiffen created Pro Mist filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal lengths because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on an 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist filters is 1/2 for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 for 25-35mm and 1/8 for 50mm and above. This principle applies to all diffusion filters. I hope this information is useful.
That’s really cool. I filmed this all by myself - I often get demotivated if I don’t have a filmer - so it’s nice to know that even if I can’t get a filmer for bts that the videos are still valuable! 🙏🏼
These look great! I’ve been following the trend of people using old digicams to get that film look but these filters seem to get you a good way to that look, with better glass. The big thing is softening the transitions between light and dark and getting that bloom in the highlights, the rest is just colour grading.
I literally have my cinebloom moment diffusion filter on my lenses at all times! I tend to use 5% and the 10% the most! Make everything feel smoother for my work!
I’ve been shooting using a Tide Optics 1/4 CineBloom filter on a couple of portait shoots lately, for the right concept they really do add a lot of atmosphere that is difficult to replicate effectively in post
Hi! I recently discovered your channel and now I cannot stop watching your Videos!😅 Interesting topics, that are useful for everybody and your calm way of talking and explaining is really enjoyable!
way too late but damn this was amazing bro. photos on point as always and the B-roll video sections were dope. the go pro 11 sections were great to show some insight into your thoughts and direction while shooting too. loved it my g
hi mitch, i've been going back to this video a few times this year because i really love your portraits, they look awesome and they inspire me to create more. just wanted to ask, how do you make your videos so stable?
I shoot with a sony zve1 or a7iv - the camera has gyro data embedded in the file which can be used by an app called catalyst browse to stabilise the footage. I’ve been doing that on all my videos for around 2 years now
Hey Mitch love this vid, diffusion filters are great! Do you have any thoughts on the Tiffen Glimmerglass filters? Similar idea, slightly different effect, and there doesn't seem to be a ton of people comparing them.
Glimmer Glass 1 keeps a bit more contrast than the Pro Mist 1/8 but still gives a nice helation to light sources. I prefer the Glimmer Glass 1 personally but both give a nice (similar) effect.
hello good, I would like to know in what color profile did you use your sony, and if you really used the presets that you have in the description? thank you!
(okey, you wrote it in the picture presentation slides) Hi, do you know which filter strength you had on the 35mm (NiSi)? love the look and as always the pictures are mind-blowing good! Great role model, keep it up!! Greetings Max
Did you ever try to smear Vaseline on a UV filter or any crazy stuff like that? I heard people do that years ago. Never tried it myself but is sound like fun.
Hey Mitch great video as always. Was wondering who is filming whilst you're taking the pics? Or are you using a gopro? If so which one? Also how do I reach you by mail. Want to buy some of your presets, and need some info thanks
I'm becoming obsessed with tweaking the image pre/present shooting rather than in post lately. Filters, film sims in camera, applying LUTs in camera (S5II) or even possibly adding grain if available. Post has become really boring to me, editing the look/concept as I'm working just feels much more organic and fun. Def not for all kinds of work and can be risky, but I think it's worth it at least for casual/personal stuff.
Would you say using these filters is a great way to shoot in mostly harsh lighting outdoors? I've never been very good at shooting in harsh light so I stick to lower light conditions but generally curious if these filters would facilitate shooting in harsh light for the most part? Normally shoot with a 50 1.2 (canon) and a 35 1.4 (sigma)
I definitely find my sigma 85mm dg dn doesn’t focus quite as well in low light with the nisi 1/8 filter. Did you have the same experience? It’s not unbearable but something to consider. I’m using the A9ii
GREETINGS I AM INTERESTED IN BUYING YOUR LUTS FRIEND, COULD YOU HELP ME WITH THE CONFIGURATION OF RECORDING ADJUSTMENT OR IF YOU HAVE ANY CAMERA CONFIGURATION LIKE SLOG3 ETC. , BEFORE ADDING THE LUT? THANKS GREETINGS FROM PERU
What camera did film your talking shots? It looks noticeably different to your other videos but not in a good way tbh. The last videos had a better image to it.
@@MitchLally maybe it’s this. ;) I watched your 2nd last video (RP) and last video (mist filter) behind each other and noticed a difference in the face. Skin color as well but that’s another story. But that’s just my opinion on things. Your color scheme is totally not my type and I wouldn’t edit like you but it is your style and there are many things I like about your photos and videos an keep watching for a very long time now. 💪🏻
I stopped using mist/bloom filters years ago. CPL and ND are the only filters I use, and whose function can't be recreated in Photoshop. Using a mist filter means you have already limited your post-processing options from the start. It takes seconds to get the same effect in Photoshop, if required, and leaves you open to more options. Great pics and great model though :)
@@probolehla Because you are starting with an image that has a mist filter over it - you have already lost detail and contrast that you can't recover. Doing it in post gives you more options. You can add mist to an image you have, but you can't remove it from an image shot with a filter.
I'm not too stressed about it tbh - I would be concerned with 1/4 or 1/2 and not being able to bring it back but 1/8 is subtle enough where you only just notice it.

it would be very useful to compare the blurring effects of different filters at different basic focal lengths, for example 24mm, 50mm, 85/100mm
Good stuff!! I really appreciate the format of this video, really helpful + 🔥 music!! Thank you so much Mitch🙏🏽
Great info. Thanks.
Thank you buddy!
Thank you.
What would you (strongly) suggest for 16-35, 24-70, and 70-200?
Thanks in advance.
Mitch's style + Japan + Mist filters= straight bangers!
Cheers Felix!

Man I seriously think this was one of the best portrait shoot videos I've seen from you. Keep it up Mitch!
ayy thank you man that's the encouragement I need to keep going!
agreed
The photos were great, but the b-roll shots looked SO good. Like a vintage/cinematic look.
Appreciate that - spent the extra time to shoot B roll and I'm glad I did.
That last location was straight BANGERS
So good dude, you have the best colors I've seen out of a sony...I use a black promist 1/8 on most of my shoots
Cheers man! It's the presets mostly - I dunno I sort of just got something right with these colours I guess haha.
Looking great, dude!
A true professional ✌🏾 Great shots Mitch. You make it look too easy 😎

Loving these portrait series in Japan, these photos were sooo clean👌 gotta love mist filters!

i've been thinking about getting a pro mist filter, this video might have made my decision getting one a little easier 🙌
man you make the 85 looks standard! love the 35mm!
Amazing Mitch, love these shots. Found this video so helpful!
Solid work as usual! I have been thinking about picking up one of those filters!
Thanks man!

I'm honestly so happy with their filters and I kinda expected them to be the same as all the other brands..
I've got the NISI 👌🏽👌🏽

Thanks!!
Awesome content Mitch! Much appreciated. 👍🏽
damn i miss shooting portraits! cant wait to get back into it
Love the look of 35mm than 85mm.i love the depth and layering from the 35mm. I wanna see 24, 28, 40, 50mm next time you visit Japan! XD
Wonderful model!
Nice video, nice presentation. Would have been nice to get a shot or 2 of Natchi actually smiling though.

Rumour is I'm going to Fujifilm HQ to test some more goodies next week.
@@MitchLally enjoy man 🤟
Man this is one of my favorite episodes from you. Are you carrying just one camera body, even for the vlog/video parts?
Thanks Tim! Yeah - just the a7IV - it's my main camera now and I use it for everything bar the POV shots which I have a gopro 11 for.
I feel like mist filters perform at their best in low light and night photography. Not sure this video really nailed what they're capable of doing.
Yeah you might be right but when the sun goes down my camera goes back in the bag - that's the rule :')
@@MitchLally Weird rule. You're missing out on some amazing photography at night.

Hi. Great video 😊 where do I find film burn overlay like this???
Hello sir, i have seen your video on Ep 1, its cool!, but i cant see it anymore, is it deleted? i want to see it again
Beautiful shot. Beautiful woman. 😍
Hello Mitch! May i know, do you work only on lightroom? Really love your shooting-videos 👋
For the most part yes. I’ve been using it since I first started so the controls are familiar to me.
Amazing! Thank you!
I'm more interested in what you had glass wise on the video aspect of this video. It looks A1. Sony 20mm 1.8 but what ND and what Mist Filter?
Any chance you will be organising a Brisbane meetup? Would be cool for fans to meet you!
Strong possibility. Maybe beers at HSW?
@@MitchLally Sounds like a plan!
Natchi!! hi guys
Question! If you're shooting at f1.4 for those lenses, did you also have to stack on a ND filter on top of the pro mist filters?
Following...
really nice :)
Do you have to pay your models to have a photoshoot session?
hello good, I would like to know in what color profile did you use your sony, and if you really used the presets that you have in the description? thank you!
Yes I really used the presets! I use them in every video 🙂 color profile doesn’t matter when you shoot in RAW.
Can’t this effect be done in editing??
(okey, you wrote it in the picture presentation slides)
