    From the perspective of someone who has owned a 4th gen Acura TL with SH-AWD for 7 years, I was puzzled by the attempts in the video to get the car to turn in better by trying to defeat SH-AWD, rather than by taking advantage of it. This system will apply 70% of available torque to the rear wheels under acceleration, and up to 100% of that to the outside rear wheel in a turn. In my experience, the best way I get my TL to turn in more is to give it MORE throttle in the middle of a turn. An SH-AWD car is not going to fishtail like a RWD car (which is caused by drivetrain torque and lateral acceleration overpowering available tire grip), so don’t try to force it to. My TL is dimensionally about the same, has a shorter wheelbase, and weighs about the same as the current TLX. It will turn with other cars considerably smaller than it is.

    • @nowords7737
      @nowords7737 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Also own a 4th gen tl and was thinking the same thing. The idea is for the car to not slide right??? The SHAWD redirects torque so you can tuck it in nice and smooth then power out as it adapts the torque for the appropriate wheels. He was getting so mad that the car wasnt spinning out which to me seems like a good thing.... Ive thrown my car around turns pretty hard and it just refuses to slide even a little. Allows me to power out of the turn no issue. Not sure what his frustration was about

    • @LockdownuG
      @LockdownuG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The idea here is he wants to get this thing to misbehave. Easy to drive plus underpowered can tend to be boring for these guys. They drive performance cars on the limit all the time. Also, a car tends to become less sporty if there is no challenge in driving it fast. At least to some.

    I own a 2023, and I can say that I am very happy with it. I am a long-time Honda fan, and I can tell you that this doesn't drive like an old integra or civic. It does have a lot to offer when you spend a little time with it and learn what it is good at.
    It handles extremely well, especially if you are applying power through corners. Understeer is completely neutralized in this setting. The steering is quick and precise.
    If you are approaching a decreasing radius turn, then it feels a little nose heavy in these situations.
    The transmission is excellent when left in automatic mode in sport plus. It stays in the right gear and makes great sounds. It is pretty quick too. Obviously, an m340 is faster!!
    I am impressed with the brakes for Back Road blasts. Track work would overheat them.
    The seats are excellent. Supportive, comfortable, and grippy. Seat ventilation is a great feature.
    The stereo is clear and has a nice full sound. It might be a little bass heavy with certain music.
    I personally love the looks. Wide and low never went out of style.
    It feels like it is more expensive than it is. All the switches have a quality feel. The engine sounds expensive and refined.
    There is the promise of low running costs, which can't be underestimated. Cars are depreciating assets, and expensive repairs will affect your long-term term financial position. Now, to be fair, we are still talking about an expensive purchase. If we were all and little smarter and a little more practical, we would drive Camrys!

    I'm not gonna lie, I'm quite saddened by this review, :(. My family just picked up the Type S only a couple of weeks ago in the blue color, it was the most exciting thing for me of this year so far with everything going on. And I've loved it so far. I won't lie haven't got an opportunity to take it to Cayuga or any track to see what it can do yet. I am a Honda Fanboy, built a 9th gen civic si for the track myself, and fell in love with this car when it was announced. This video was a fairly uncomfortable pill to swallow and I sort of felt this empty feeling in my stomach when I saw how little joy it gave you. I was waiting for this video to come out so my dad and I could watch it together, as (You guys are the only TH-cam Channel I trust to be as honest as the original top gear). That's the power you guys have on die-hard car enthusiasts like us, a review like this was enough to steal some magic away from the car that hasn't even lost its new car smell in our garage yet. Everything aside though, I've religiously watched this channel since the days of the E46 to now, You are my favorite channel on youtube and I really hope I bump into you guys sometime at an event in Toronto. I don't ever comment on videos but felt compelled on a personal level today to speak and to thank you for the effort you put into the quality of your work. Kinda funny/interesting to see how different people interpret different cars. Everything they said about the Type S here is completely opposite of what Matt Farah had to say about it. Most reviews on this car have been very positive. This is the second I've seen that has been negative. And I THINK I lean towards the positive because A) I've driven one and thought it was nice and B) As soon as Thomas said "We're on the track because: Type S" he instantly indicated a lack of understanding what Type S cars are about. They're not track cars. That's what the Type-Rs are for. The "S" and "R" literally stand for "Street" and "Race", respectively. Everybody is entitled to their opinion but I think they went into this with inappropriate expectations.

    However, then I realized, “I wish Acura *DESERVED* more love.” Because right now, they really don’t.
    Lexus and Acura are resting their laurels too heavily on their "projected" reliability marketing, while neglecting the fact that their price tags are still too high for performance that is so low. IN A PERFORMANCE SEDAN SEGMENT.

Lexus is still very reliable but Acura has slipped recently and is only okay reliability wise. The design is unique but the cost is comparable to its rivals while the comfort and performance is not. I honestly think a fully loaded Accord or Camry will full the desires of a prospective TLX type S buyer just as well with better reliability and a far more reasonable price tag at the expense of a little bit of performance and a little bit of luxury. But most people gushing about the Type S want it because it's a Type S not because it's objectively good at anything other than existing and chugging gas. Yeah this car is a major fail to me. Ever since it’s conception.
    And like you said, Acura hyped this up SO much. I wouldn’t take this over any of its competitors. Not even an IS. Comparing this to the IS300 isn’t fair. Comparing this to an IS500, it’s true competitor, results in a slaughter.

    • @elenchus
      @elenchus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      as much as I hate the new/fake Type S, the IS 500 is probably going to cost $10k to $15k more. Fully loaded, an IS 350 F Sport is within a couple thousand of a fully loaded Type S (as all Type Ses are fully loaded), so that seems to be the logical place for comparison, and that's a fight the Type S will win in terms of performance.

    • @Soh90
      @Soh90 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@elenchus I’m a little more optimistic. A base RC cost more than a base IS. $42,000 vs $39,000. Or about $3,000 more. A “base” RC-F rings in at $65,000. And that’s with several performance options that the IS500 will lack. A base BMW M340i is about $55,000 and a Base IS350 F Sport with the handing package is $47,000. The IS500 is based off the IS350 with the handling package and Lexus basically drops in a V8… Logic would conclude that the IS500 will be ringing in at anywhere around $56,000, give or take $995. It won’t be cheap, but it certainly won’t be nearly $70,000 as it is not based off a fully loaded IS350 as your implying. By Lexus’ own admissions the IS500 is not a full blown F model, so it doesn’t make much sense to price it above a full blown F model, especially one that cost more in base trim (RC).
      At a base price of $56,000 for the IS500 and $52,000 for the TLX, the TLX is dead on arrival. I’m sorry, but I’ll happily lay the $4,000 premium.

    I own one and knew what I was getting long before I got it so there's no regrets here. But your review is spot on. Acura hyped and marketed it to be something it is not almost to a point of false advertising. It has a lot of things I like about it. Very comfortable, stereo is good not great, but good. Infotainment is a disaster, reverse camera's are an embarrassment. I want to smack the moron designer in the face for the shifter and where they put it. Price wise I don't think it is a great deal when you have a Stinger with much more tech, and better tech at near 7 grand less in Canada. G70 also cheaper. Factor in interest rates on that 340 vs Acura's interest rates and it too isn't that far off, I know, I almost got one. So once again, Acura held back, the bean counters probably ruined the original vision of this car, they Hyped it to no end and failed to deliver. I don't think it is worthy of the Type S badge, There I said it. Not this day and age. Maybe 10 years ago. But it needs another 40HP at least, and while it looks to have a good starting point for the mod'ing community with forged internals, that's not the point and I'm not remotely interested in mod'ing it. It's a Type S, they advertised it to be a S4 competitor and well, it's not. BTW, I'm not 100% convinced you launched properly with launch control against that S4 but it doesn't matter because it's not going to catch it anyways. At least you guys listened about disabling the stability control properly this time lol. As always, great video. It's gorgeous, especially with skirts on it, a great daily although mpg sucks, and a great highway cruiser - just realize there's no spare tire....again.

Because if so, Acura would've been all over that on the airwaves & Acura never came out with a 0-60 time, even after it's debut which is almost unheard of when talking performance cars. Then the weight, it's too heavy for a single twin scroll turbocharged V6. U need a twin turbo or a V8 to move that weight quickly.

With current technology they should be able to make one with decent MPG by having the valve shutoff in certan driving situations like what the corvette engine does and other V8's by other manufacturer's. I also believe Toyota should update the tech in their V8's instead of dropping them for V6's. But now they want to go full EV which sucks.

    Bought the wife an MDX a few months ago and saw the standard TLX at the dealerships and was excited to see how this would stack up to our Stinger GT. Not well is the answer. It's not a bad car, it's actually pretty nice and maybe 3-5 years ago it would be very impressive. Everyone seems to have discovered how to manufacture horsepower from thin air the last few years....300HP for a V8 was outstanding not that long ago....sub-6 sec 0-60 times are still quick.....but the field is in the mid to low 4 sec, better handling, and with more backseat space. Honda/Acura are not stupid; they know how to design a car, but how the hell do you make a car like a foot longer and lose backseat space?
    The other thing that drives me crazy with Acura is that you have to choose between all of the convenience and luxury features and a sport package. I want all the bells and whistles AND the performance. I want leather seats...no inserts. I don't want the colors, but I want the engine. I want the 360 camera. I don't like being forced to choose. The point of a car like this is that I can have it all at a price point that undercuts the Europeans and gives me a pretty damn close experience day to day....I don't need the track day performance, but if I want to get a little silly on a backroad it should do something...jeez.

      @@layne4376 I'm gonna have to disagree on the "vastly better built part" based on two years of ownership. It's held up extremely well and between my 2022 MDX and the Stinger there is no discernable difference in build quality from materials to fit and finish. I don't own stock in either company and I really don't care what you or anyone else buy, but I do disagree with your comment. The TLX may handle better based on more time with the MDX and the SH-AWD and the double wishbone suspension that they both have. It's legit and I bet in a smaller vehicle it's something else.

    Yep. Uncle Doug also wasn’t impressed with this vehicle. I had the Type S on my short list and now I’ve removed it from my list. The IS 500, the M340i and the G70 are now my top 3 choices. I’m leaning toward the IS 500 because of the V8 and Lexus’ stellar overall reliability.

    • @mrsittingmongoose
      @mrsittingmongoose 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The v8 is under powered, and heavy though. Although it does sound good. The tech in the Lexus is also far far behind the bmw and genesis. Just some food for thought.

      I agree with you, but I would want the Lexus. BMW for performance, G70 for value, Lexus for comfort/reliability, and V8 cruising.

      Just depends really on what you want. I’m always going Lexus because I keep my cars for a while(10-15 years) so I’m just waiting for that IS500. I removed the Type-S from my list too from this review. Seems so lackluster :/

      Reading the comments, my current decision on the IS 500 as my top choice seems to be a good one. I do wish the technology inside the IS 500 was better and overall performance closer to the 340i, but the overall package (V8, reliability, comfort and resale value) of the IS 500 is what is pushing me toward sticking with the IS 500 as my top choice.

    The best part in comparison to many of the other brands is the cost of ownership. Acura is much lower than a MB or BMW especially 10 years from now. In comparison, they are all 3 star luxury-style service experiences. The tech. (HUD - full-digital gauge cluster) on the BMW 3 Series bowls me over and combined with the engineering and hybrid option makes me consider getting one. I have a 2016 TLX tech i4 (superb value). I just worry about the cost of owning a BMW. Thanks for the great informative vids.

    I’m amazed that Acura hasn’t changed to a RWD based platform. How do they expected to compete in this very competitive segment?

      Will never happen unfortunately, since they share drivetrains with momma Honda and SUVs are their most popular products between both brands.

    Wish you guys would test a Giulia Ti Sport Q4 as no one seems to! I test drove this Acura as my Giulia lease was ending and the TLX was embarrassingly bad in comparison. Ended up buying the Giulia out with a cheap warranty because I can't find anything as good.

      I love the Giulias. I almost got one. Just wish they made a middle tier motor with around 350ish hp. Either get the 280hp 2.0t or the monster 2.9tt v6 but for 90k. The 2.0t in the giulia is very potent tho. I think it’s quicker then this Type S. The giulia handles amazing. You can just flick it around. I ended up with a Stinger GT. The 3.3tt v6 won me over. Still love the giulia tho!

    A sporty, daily driver with AWD for winter...you can find Certified's with 5,000 miles for $45-$48k easily. Not everyone cares about 0-60 times. This with normal maintenance will outlast any German. And you won't be spending $200/hour on labor either. BMW and Mercedes are good for leasing for 2-3 years...after that I wouldn't touch em.
    Let's not forget 212.8M people in the US live in households with combined incomes of well below $100,000 annually. Commenters act like they aren't part of the ~70% of Americans who live paycheck to paycheck LOL. Sit down guys.
