I’ve been working with one of the well known FA tuners since Accesstuner added support for the FA24. Here’s where we’re at with it: $3500 for intake, downpipe, intercooler and Accessport + tuning fees = 375whp/400ftlbs on e40. Fuel cut remains at 6100rpm. You really need to stop at that power level and rpm to protect the transmission, so those numbers are what owners can expect if they want to start modding today. The transmission is the same one used in the VA chassis so it’s a known variable and no one is going to figure out a way to make it magically hold more torque reliably. The next step will be someone doing a >$10k STI transmission swap to see if it fits. If it does, we’re off to the races with big turbos, fuel system upgrades, methanol and full e85 to see how far we can push the FA24 before it needs upgraded internals. Like you said in this video, things will be very interesting a year from now. It’s just important for everyone to keep in mind that a very expensive transmission upgrade is going to be necessary before these cars can make big boy power.
Thanks for the insight! I figured there would be something that would eventually limit the increased power getting to the ground l, whether that be the transmission, clutch, axles, etc. Interested to see if the STI transmission can be swapped over.
Prime Motoring explored the FA24 a few years ago when it came out in the Ascent. They transplanted it into a crosstrek with an STI driveline, did full bolts ons with an FP Blue and made near 700whp before the rods snapped. These motors are more than capable.

The guys at PrimeMotoring with JRTuned are loving the new platform. Have theirs sitting in the low 400s. Apparently they boosted an older FA24 (Ascent I believe) a few years ago and the motor itself is pretty stout, just eats power. I’m excited for it. Seems like the best performing WRX in a while, as far as power numbers go for a stock block. I believe they had a post on Instagram as well, saying this has the least drivetrain loss/highest wheel output compared to older gen WRX/STi’s
Before I bought my Elantra N I test drove one of these and was pretty disappointed in comparison. The Elantra N feels faster and is a lot more fun to drive when being pushed. It’s not a bad car, if you actually need the AWD I guess it would make sense, but drive the Elantra N before deciding IMO.
Very interesting and additional fun for out-of-warranty WRX's. Not sure if any of this applies to the Outback's 2.4 Setup. Also the elephant in the room is Subaru will void warranty for any engine/drivetrain modifications like this (and no, you can't simply reverse the tuning during warranty claims as the ECU remembers the changes).
I feel like if they get the looks better (even tho it still looks like a legacy to me) i feel like the horsepower addiction is only for people in areas where pump e85 is available. But also all the WRXs at the Subaru dealership I work at has sold a few handfulls of the cars and havent heard any complaints yet
I think this was pretty obvious from the beginning. Larger displacement with less boost and a linear power band making more power than the FA20. Not sure why people were so disappointed. Peak horsepower never tells the story
Went to Florida for new years and was on the highway for awhile and ran into one me and the dude just started cruising with each other n they look nice man I can’t lie🔥🔥
nah...that info-tainment ctr, plastic cladding and Civic tailights are still MAJOR turn-offs for me...i'll be keeping my gorgeous blue pandemic special 2020 WRX, thank you.
When it's lowered, aftermarket wheels, and painted plastic cladding it looks pretty good. How does the engine hold power? Will it stay together? Crispy bacon on a tuna sandwich is king by the way.
You do realize this is a subaru engine we are talking about right? I mean i love subaru but their engines have always been fragile and the fa series is no exception.
@@ianholmquist8492 you can tell they definitely planned on putting this motor in the sti with all this headroom left in the wrx motor. I wouldn’t call these new motors fragile. The weakest point was the clutch on the fa20.
@@ChazOfGod the 2017 wrx that i owned started knocking badly on cold starts after only 40k miles and everything on the car was bone stock except the wheels. I am religious about maintenance on my vehicles too. Oddly enough i have always found the ej engines more reliable, having owned a few. So i traded the wrx in for a 21 sti
Most were wrong ;) I bought one early as we saw people make big power on the fa24dit like Prime. 11 second daily for 30k, not bad. Not much out there that compares on the new cars for the money.
I wouldn't say people were wrong about the 2022 model besides the plastic that's going to fade out but that's easily resolved with a little bit of paint. I would say the biggest complaint about the 2022 models was the lack of the true STI touch. Slapping wings and lip kits does not define it as an STI entirely. The whole world was hoping for a true tuned 400 horsepower STI, possibly completed with a bigger turbo that doesn't instantly spool and fall on its face on the top end, which it does.
Personally it reminds me a lot of the 90s catfish Camaro. Not an overly appealing car visually but the motor and drivetrain will attract enthusiasts regardless. Hopefully the aftermarket will remedy the cladding but until then we’ll be waiting on a facelift in 2-5 years.
There was a 11.5 sec time run at a track and it was not even on full bolts it was just om intake and catback and front mount and tune with e4or e30 mix so that is Hella impressive
As a previous gen owner, all I wanted was for a new STI to come out. Apparently, subaru has been losing a lot of money and will instead focus on electrification. The new WRX isn't much of an upgrade over the previous gen with the 2022 being heavier and (slower?) I intentionally saved money for a new STi. Big disappointment
Downpipe/E50 makes like 380WHP on these. I'm not even a Subie guy and these are kinda cool. Appearance is pretty bad, but you could make this a sweet daily.
@@somedudenameddes0121 i agree with him. I hated the look of the VAs. The GRs (specifically the hatch) was the last generation I liked, then the hawkeyes before that. The VB looks so good and the FA24 is looking very good as well so far
I'll definitely give the FA24 the props it deserves. The diaper butt rear bumper, ridiculous fender cladding, and 90s black plastic front bumper not so much.
Is anyone actually surprised that the FA24 is capable of a lot more power than the previous engine? It's a bigger engine with less factory boost, so of course there's room to grow.
I'm currently making 760 wheel on a 2015 sti so these numbers don't really sway me but they are still impressive when compared apples to apples with the ej25. Direct injection makes a decent bump but without tech present to clean the valves the build up makes di a nonstarter for me. I don't hate the new wrx but also not in love. The fa heads are much more expensive than mine from the previous gen but I assume it's because they are more complex. All in all if someone has one that's pretty cool no hate whatsoever but not something I'm personally interested in owning.

Had a first run of the previous 2.0L WRX generation. Extremely disappointed, bad electric and brake failures in the winter. Got an '18 WRX STI (tuned) instead and couldnt be happier. I won't support anymore bad business decisions from Subaru. FYSA the STI is undriveable in 1-2nd gear without a Cobb tune. Still miss my 2013 WRX Hatch...
My local shop (VEMS tuning) slapped down 318 whp and 332 wtq on 93 octane with nothing but an ETS intake. They think they can get past 350 whp by adding just a downpipe/exhaust and intercooler to that on 93 octane…
It's not that bad. All you need to do is completely void your warranty, spend thousands of dollars on bolt-ons, give your car questionable reliability, and it might make up for the bad exterior design.
Chances are if it was dyno tuned in AZ its on 91 octane not 93 octane. Since 93 is not available unless otherwise mixed with some type of higher octane fuel.
Gut feeling is this engine won’t rev but it will be stronger than the 2 litre fa and just add boost for solid engine power that will surpass it older sibling fa
I mean when i look at it design is fine, Its pretty much function over form, like the plastics are gonna protect the car a bit, yeah they dumped an ipad in there because its just simpler to do at the end of the day.
I'd still take the previous gen any day over the new one. The entire design is so underwhelming looking, I feel like it's not even really worthy of the WRX name. The design of the last generation is better in every way.
I could care a little less about HP (although it's nice); I just want my car to look mean. Most people don't buy cars for HP, lets be real. It's 75% (at least) about looks.

It’s a Hyundai though!
Personally I like the N performance, exhaust and interior. Though imo the Elantra N is worse looking than the 22 WRX
@@hahaadventures4838 So?
Gotto get you into the algorithm my boy. Quality content as always.
Man really wish Subaru would have just made it 300/350 from factory. Really don’t want to tune and mess with warranty
What if you have the CVT? How much power can those handle?
Stock power levels
When it's lowered, aftermarket wheels, and painted plastic cladding it looks pretty good. How does the engine hold power? Will it stay together? Crispy bacon on a tuna sandwich is king by the way.
When i saw the stock fa24 was running such low boost, i knew tuning would bring a lot out of the engine. Maybe the aftermarket will bail them out.
All the details mentioned at the intro are pointless. The car is still gimped and underpowered.
Prime motoring made 414whp with E and bolt ons
Impressive!
Gels is back. Dope video just giving info. Wish you and Dakota could do some sort of live review
Thank you! We definitely have some things in the works!
I’m glad they may finally get a great engine but it’s just too ugly for me. Let get that in a BRZ/86!
The FA24 found its way into the new BRZ as well! Minus the turbo of course 😅
I saw a shop make 411 HP and 475 TQ on one of their WRXs
The looks are starting to grow on me, honestly.
Someone also ran an 11.2 with intake, downpipe, FMIC, e50 blend, passenger and rear seat removed. Had a wheel and tire package as well.
ThOse are some healthy numbers!!!!!!!
The 2022 wrx looks better than the previous platform in my opinion. More aggressive in the front and drives like champ.
You gotta be trolling 🤣
@@somedudenameddes0121 i agree with him. I hated the look of the VAs. The GRs (specifically the hatch) was the last generation I liked, then the hawkeyes before that. The VB looks so good and the FA24 is looking very good as well so far
@@somedudenameddes0121 they were bland imo
i test drove one and the first thing that i noticed that was better was the clutch
The clutch has a really nice feel. It’s similar to the type r clutch.
Best bang for buck when you consider modding. Oh and thanks haters. It was you that caused me to have one in my driveway.
A guy just ran an 11.09 second quarter mile with just an intake, fmic, j-pipe, and tune lol
That dark orange looks sooooo good! @3:55
All in all if someone has one that's pretty cool no hate whatsoever but not something I'm personally interested in owning.
if the wrx had the same di/port setup as the brz it would be a game changer, feel like the STI would've went that route had they kept it around
@@Murf1500 ya I think that was a toyota stipulation because subaru hasn't brought that to their other models but should be standard across all Manu imo
@The Real Cat of 2020 oh definitely. You must build the engine to withstand the mods you are adding. Idt I'd trust the stock block above 350 wheel.
There is a method to keep the intake valves clean, it's called water methanol injection.
@The Real Cat of 2020 however, check out the bader built channel. He has a 720wheel Forrester rn on a stock engine. It's gonna blow but it's taking its time it's kind of impressive.
I think the only WRX that they really missed the mark on was the narrowbody GE sedan. They fixed it quickly enough. I think the new one is growing on me. I honestly hated the hawkeye at first.. But now I need one
Not even interested in WRXs all that much however great video man
Go look at how much prime made with theirs😂 They REALLY are pushing it
got one wrblue and love it!! such a fun car
I absolutely love my 22 WRX.
My local shop (VEMS tuning) slapped down 318 whp and 332 wtq on 93 octane with nothing but an ETS intake. They think they can get past 350 whp by adding just a downpipe/exhaust and intercooler to that on 93 octane…
Welcome to 2020. Type r, golf r, golf gti been making this type of power with a splash of E for a while now.
It's not that bad. All you need to do is completely void your warranty, spend thousands of dollars on bolt-ons, give your car questionable reliability, and it might make up for the bad exterior design.
Good video bro. The audio needs some work
For sure😅 working with what I got right now, a new mic is first on the list!
Chances are if it was dyno tuned in AZ its on 91 octane not 93 octane. Since 93 is not available unless otherwise mixed with some type of higher octane fuel.
+1 for Algorithm. Good vid keep it up Gels!
Thank you!
I might buy them all, just to put in storage
😂
Nice new car to own and mod. Buying a used one modded out could be questionable.
It’s been a year, time for that update video!
I have my consoles right next to my monitor as well 😂😂
Gut feeling is this engine won’t rev but it will be stronger than the 2 litre fa and just add boost for solid engine power that will surpass it older sibling fa
Good viable and interesting information! Thanks 😊✌🏼
Honestly it's just the rear bumper that bothers me. The rest I can get over
Every time there’s a wrx released … this conversation happens !!! And then u buy one 😂😂😂😂😂
Whenever a car company wants to kill a car they design it like this to limit sales and then blame low sales
I’m also worried about the high torque figure. Hoping a stock location bolt on can have nearly the same response, and keep the tq down for longevity.
Stronger connecting rods and .4 more displacement. I wouldn’t be super worried. I’ve been 430/350 on my fa20 for 4 years.
@@mikejmahon28 wrx transmission not an sti transmission. thats why most people are worried about the torque i believe
@@monstermash479 lol true that. Is it the same is the VA trans?
@@mikejmahon28 yes its the same 6 speed
@@monstermash479 oh yikes.
I dig the new WRX but one thing that I dislike is its rear thing looks like a Prius 😅
Now if it only looked better. Used to love my 09 sti wagon. The reliability not so much
I mean when i look at it design is fine, Its pretty much function over form, like the plastics are gonna protect the car a bit, yeah they dumped an ipad in there because its just simpler to do at the end of the day.
Curious to see what this means for the brz/gr86 platform.
I have really high hopes for the new generation!
The dangers of conformity allows the masses to watch leaders with vision
Ok I hear you. Now I just have to get over the history
All that money to drive a car that looks like it was made by IKEA, and still see the tail lights of the new Golf R.. Subaru has left the building.
We always knew the engine was going to be good but the rest of the car is lacking
Everyone was not wrong. The simple math said that a 2.4l should be making more power than they are being sold with.
Trans/Diffs + control/Brakes. Would really have been nice to have some higher spec options from Subaru.
Yeah. Good point . Probly saving it for sti if they are even making one for this.. sti Of this model will be worth it but this Wrx besides having an all wheel drive is just another sedan..
@@noxnyc23 I really want a reason to trade in my 2018 STI... I just can't yet. I'm losing too much in mechanical benefit if I did.
@@matthewwain9958 lol you won’t find one. Besides our dinosaur ej engine which I will advice you to monitor your oil level pretty much weekly is yeah can’t find one either.. your 2018 sti is far superior in parts and build quality in my opinion.. keep that sweet 2018 sti you won’t regret it.. I drive a 14 sti stage 2 and 2021 Tacoma trd. I’d rather get the outback wild edition ? Over this . Not hating on the new wrx just can’t get into it. My buddy has the silver 2023? Wrx gt .. recaro and interior is nice and nothing about it told me I gots to have this wrx.. felt just like any other sedan 🤷🏻♂️
@@noxnyc23 I bought my wife the 2022 Outback Wilderness, and honestly, I think it's fantastic. Pulls like a mule all the while being on regular gas, and handles pretty darn well given the tires, height and it's intended use case. Had Subaru put better brakes on the GT and maybe some other bits, it might have been viable... but 44k for a CVT ... not cool. Should have been the manual with the STI 6 speed for that price. And yes... I would quite happily buy another Wilderness, even with it's questionable looks lol.
I thought they stopped making these?
New legacy sport has a turbo again and a 2.4 as well, its prob just cvt tho 😢😅
Subaru was wrong about the amount of rtv to put on the oil pans… cause of many engine failures already
That’s just a straight up lie bro
Prime motoring hit 500+awhp out of the ascent fa24 in their crosstrek before the wrx release. Think they did 30+ wot pulls on the dyno at that power. And have done well with their wrx.
They are killing it right now!
It’s really not surprising it’s a new 2.4 turbo engine
I always dig your opinions, except that tuna+honey mustard. I can't ok that. Look forward to more!
I think the FA 24 is going to be a good motor I still don’t like the new GEN WRXS and as far as making power I’m sure the motor can handle it but the transmission and driveline cannot being it’s the same drive line from the older GEN WRX my 2019 WRX has FBO FA 20 with a complete STI drivetrain swap and makes great power and if I ever wanted to go for more in the future I have already future proofed my car with the STI drivetrain swap it don’t matter how much power a motor can put down if the drivetrain can’t handle the power and you can’t make reliable power over time most people buying these cars are regular joes doing race car stuff all I can say is make sure you got about $15k set aside for when the motor does go boom boom pushing all that torque cuz SUBARU OF AMERICA is not going to honor that warranty you voided when you wanted to do all that race car stuff to your daily driver, I love Subarus exp. The WRX/STI PLATFORM but these cars from factory were not built to make big power from factory can you do it ? Sure … is it fun he’ll yes , should you push your car to its limitations? Exp. A factory block with factory internals probably not if you can’t afford to replace the motor you just voided your warranty on we all don’t know what the future holds BUT if your going to PLAY make sure your ready to PAY! cuz it won’t be anyone’s fault but your own if you push the car to it limits and it goes BOOMBOOM it’s all fun while we are going fast but once it blows we blame the car knowing damn well the stock block and drivetrain couldn’t handle all the power.
Don’t care how much power it’ll make I’ll just do a swap in my 2016 lol. The care is just ugly except for the wagon which we don’t get here in the states.
x2; interchangeability between other VA and VB.
WAIT ANOTHER HONEY MUSTARD AND TUNA ENJOYER 😳😳 another common gels W
LET'S GOOOOO!
The issue with the new WRX was never about the power, it was always about the poor body style.
Don't like the WRX? Try the BRZ. How many small car companies have two sports cars? I like my old 2013 Subaru Legacy, now with 130,000 miles on it. Suspension needed replacing the last 10,000 miles but that is about it. Oh, and the Master Brake Cylinder failed at 118,000 miles. Before that, nothing. So long lasting cars that are good in the snow in mountains are what I like.
