Only way that Toyota can compete with the Ranger Raptor EcoBoost head-to-head is if they install the 3.5 TT petrol V6 from the LC300 and nibble some off-road tech from that model and stuff like the new Tacoma TRD Pro. Add to the fact that a GR Hilux needs a coil spring conversion as well, which can only be achieved through the usage of TNGA-F platform. There is no way they can do both of those on the old IMV platform. However, if Ford only offers the watered-down Ranger Raptor with the 2.0 bi-turbo diesel and no Fox Live Valve and front locker in certain markets like mine, this Hilux GR-S is a close competitor.

Chose this GR sport over old box vw Amarok, new box not coming to the caribbean, Nissan Frontier, and Dmax was just not available. Offroad capability was a priority, and this is a tad better than the others with amenities such as keyless entry, button start, large infotainment (not available in old box amarok). The interior more to my liking than the Frontier. On road handling is very sporty, thanks to the wider track and tweaked suspension. Our version has red details on the dashboard, and on the seats for a youthful touch. It also comes with an aerodynamically enhancing spoiler and marine canvas truck cover. Getting about 9.5 l/100km on mixed driving and prudent driving.
I don’t care about the “tech” I prefer it the way it is. When I drive my Hilux it feels very well put together. Test drive the ranger, the tech is just too much. That big screen is horrendous. 🤮

Hilux sits well on top in regards to reliability mate. the rangers are and have always been complete lemons. ford just never got them right. unreliable electronics, faulty over ambitious gearbox's they are a complete mess. would happily spend money on many other utes then a ranger. triton, dmax, hilux are all far better utes

Centre diff lock is not there because it's not an AWD like prado. Nevertheless when you engage 4H, it does exactly what a centre diff lock meant to do, that is, locking both front and rear axles.

The GR IS THE BEST DEISEL ON THE MARKET! This guy hasn’t got a clue. Hilux will outlive most people!.
The first comments should be the fact that it is not 2020 ancap tested like others in this vehicle standard. Toyota profit over setting benchmark safety standards rushed Hilux in a 2019 test so they didn’t need to meet 2020 testing.

You think the hilux is dated? Have a look at the Triton. That thing has no modern styling whatsoever and is still similar to how the triton look inside in 2006
If you’re talking about the current model on sale at the moment, then your point is valid, but 2 things: 1. A new triton has been revealed and is going on sale next year 2. The triton is significantly cheaper than the Hilux (especially the GR sport)
if you cant afford one buy an izuzu or triton, just don't whinge while your car rattles to bits within 12 months lol they are "overpriced" because they are highly desired. if that's too much for you to afford drive something cheaper. don't expect the same quality though

There's really no justification for charging an extra $20k for what is essentially a standard hilux with flares and a GR badge. Toyota knows how to extract maximum dollars from their reliable reputation otherwise why would you buy one compared to other offerings on the market? If Toyota released a model with V6, updated interior and/or exterior, extra features etc it would absolutely slay the market rather than just be the number 1 work ute in the country.
On the 3.5 tonne, doesn’t the minimum kerb weight include the driver at the ADR spec 67.5kg? Because you can’t really go anywhere without a driver? So in that case you’re only allowing for the difference between your weight and the ADR weight (30ish kg in my case…) I agree it’s dumb to advertise a 3.5t capacity on it, just not quite as dumb. On the other side, I test drove one of these yesterday. Pretty cool, but desperately in need of a non-ADR tune. It’s pretty laggy on the throttle. Also found the 2 cigarette plugs but only one USB-A plug pretty dumb. No USB-C, no power in the rear… not a great start.
The reason they keep it to low range on the diff is because if you are in high range your tires are going to spin faster when in air but the problem with that is when your rear wheels do touch the ground with the tires spinning at that speed and it suddenly stops it will break the diff wich is expensive to replace so inorder to try and prevent that they only keep it in low range seeing as it wil spin slower in the air

Great review there Skippy.
Great review thank you, Paul. Any ideas how it would handle a slide on camper 500-600kg's ?
I don’t care about the “tech” I prefer it the way it is. When I drive my Hilux it feels very well put together. Test drive the ranger, the tech is just too much. That big screen is horrendous. 🤮
do you change the Tyre pressure for the off road tests ?
Love the video. New to the channel. Took me a while to realize that Paul is holding a magnifying glass in the graphic. With the look on his face, I thought he was holding a microphone and belting out a tune ...
I would love to see a Hilux with a big petrol engine like its US brother (Tacoma) has. As a European I'm sick of driving new generation diesel vehicles with mandatory AdBue system. It gives me too many headaches while driving off the road, remote, in foreign countries.
What is the name of the app he uses to map the times?
Have to be mad to buy one of these over a ranger
ranger looks good but is otherwise a very very unreliable dressed up piece of crap. i work on both hilux and rangers every day and the difference is when the Hilux has issues most times they will get you home. the ranger will not. i would steer very clear of the ranger so many other better Utes.
the ranger is trash
@@Luke-rt9gyhaha yes rangers are very unreliable compared to the hilux. Have 4 mates that brought a ranger & regretted it ever since. Too many issues
@@Luke-rt9gy the 10 speed gearboxes are better than the previous ford transmissions, The previous engines were a nightmare which is why they were replaced but the 2.0 bi turbo is highly strung and not good. The only good thing about the ranger in the (stock) suspension but who keeps their Ute stock. a cheaper Ute with a good aftermarket package can be better.
I am mad and so are most people in Thailand because, 10 Toyota Hiluxs are sold for every Ford Ranger in Thailand.
The Ford Ranger, especially the Eco Boost engines have problems as do the gearboxes.
Looks very smart, not sure about the obsession with giant screens in vehicles.
Exactly, it's built to be reliable, and last. Personally i'd rather control most interior controls through buttons and knob, then through one screen. And also know I have less electronics controlling the interior then the Ranger.
@@angusburston9980 I am thinking the same, prefer buttons for controls. Use apple car play for everything else, and the screen seems big enough for that.
G’day Paul
Just wondering whether there’s a reason that you always avoid mentioning the new awesome Amarok in your comparisons???
I live in Thailand.
This Toyota Hilux GR Sport AT 2.8 4x4 is 1,479,000 bt => US$43,500
The Toyota Hilux Pre Runner AT 2.8 4x4x is 1,252,000 bt => US$36,823
One cannot justify 18% more for 15Kw more power and 50 Newtons of more torque and wider arches with bigger wheels.
Thank you. So the Ford Raptor has the same towing capacity as this model?
When can we see a review / test of the new Prado plz?
Why doesn't it have a front and centre diff lock like Prados?
Centre diff lock is not there because it's not an AWD like prado. Nevertheless when you engage 4H, it does exactly what a centre diff lock meant to do, that is, locking both front and rear axles.
Pls. do the 4x4 comparison test, Triton, Ranger, D-max, Navara and Hilux GR...
They already have 🤦🏼♂️
I test drove the GR Sport version today and after test driving the D-max, Wildtrack, Nissan Navara warrior pro x Raptor the GR Hilux craps on all of them. The warrior pro 4. For a 2.3ltr twin turbo looks tough on the outside but when you get in it, you discover very quickly that it has no balls. The rogue is only good for city commute or on a farm. The GR IS THE BEST DEISEL ON THE MARKET! This guy hasn’t got a clue. Hilux will outlive most people!.
The road you are driving on is more uneven, and there's nothing much the Toyota can do 😅😅😅
Lots of love from South Africa 🇿🇦 ❤️
Very nice review as usual. Thank's Paul
Safety....absolutely ZERO mention of the 7 airbags, crash rating of the Hilux, upgraded brakes, ESP or ABS systems.
The first comments should be the fact that it is not 2020 ancap tested like others in this vehicle standard. Toyota profit over setting benchmark safety standards rushed Hilux in a 2019 test so they didn’t need to meet 2020 testing.
great review paul keep up with the good work
as for the ute $75,000 with out dated info system & no device charging points for the people in the backseat if they update the info system & put device charging points for the people in the backseat with few other things then i might say yeah but other wise no
I'm surprised Australia had to wait to get this variant with wider flares. The GR Hilux has been around for a few years now but with the same body design as the SR5. Can't wait for you to review the new D'max, every complaint you had seems to have been worked on by ISUZU.
You must know that Isuzu toyota is the one who design it and have share like Suzuki madza and subaru
You think the hilux is dated? Have a look at the Triton. That thing has no modern styling whatsoever and is still similar to how the triton look inside in 2006
If you’re talking about the current model on sale at the moment, then your point is valid, but 2 things:
1. A new triton has been revealed and is going on sale next year
2. The triton is significantly cheaper than the Hilux (especially the GR sport)
5:18 they should have given it a red key and red interior ROR SURE
Looks bloody awesome
Another overpriced car from Toyota, oh what a feeling !!!
Don’t you mean ‘Oh what a stealing’. It’s what the Toyota execs say every time someone buys one of these tricked up dinosaurs.
if you cant afford one buy an izuzu or triton, just don't whinge while your car rattles to bits within 12 months lol they are "overpriced" because they are highly desired. if that's too much for you to afford drive something cheaper. don't expect the same quality though
Tell me about it.
I paid $88 d/away for the ancient Prado.
Picked it up a month ago.
It’s brilliant.
@@oggyoggy1299and yr mates laugh at you behind yr back. $88k for a washed up Prado 😂
@@Luke-rt9gyBloke I drive a 23 Rogue. The GR is a gimmick. I’ll happily trade the Yota on Ford and be happy but I don’t want no more kids. Red seat belts are for try hards and Geelong supporters.
I don't live in Australia, but I do live where the Hilux is available (not that watered-down Tacoma model in the USDM.) I am planning of getting one, hopefully by the end of this year.
Where’s the “aerodynamic” rollbar from other markets ?
So is this now the same power output as the new LC79 series?
Love your reviews mate, but you should add a tow test to your reviews especially for the dual cab utes
the radar seems quite distracting style wise. they need to do a better job blending it in.
So good but no front lock 😢
Can you do a review compare the gr to wild track ? Thank you
Hey Paul, how is the raptors diff doing😂😂😂😂
Do they make it in a extra cap , so you can really carry stuff
Hey Paul do a detailed review of the 2024 Toyota Land cruiser 70-series 2.8 4 cylinder.please!
Booyah 👊🏽 😁 👍🏽interesting.
But would you switch your raptor for it?
On the 3.5 tonne, doesn’t the minimum kerb weight include the driver at the ADR spec 67.5kg? Because you can’t really go anywhere without a driver?
So in that case you’re only allowing for the difference between your weight and the ADR weight (30ish kg in my case…)
I agree it’s dumb to advertise a 3.5t capacity on it, just not quite as dumb.
When are you doing the F150 lariat long base ?
Watching the off road part and all I can think of his how much value the GWN Cannon XSR is at 20K less than this...
Haha!
The reason they keep it to low range on the diff is because if you are in high range your tires are going to spin faster when in air but the problem with that is when your rear wheels do touch the ground with the tires spinning at that speed and it suddenly stops it will break the diff wich is expensive to replace so inorder to try and prevent that they only keep it in low range seeing as it wil spin slower in the air
when you lock the diff no tire will be spinning
Very good review.. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I would never swap my old Raptor for a Toyota.
Especially you, wait. The new Isuzu D Max with Rough Terrain Mode, the father of pickups, is coming. He will crush them all on the field.💪💪 I love ISUZU D-MAX, Power comes from the heart.❤
As a rogue owner bought new in 2018, I have to point out that this "GR" variant is absolutely a pathetic attempt on a more powerful vehicle and have instead slapped a GR badge on it. Same outdated engine/drivetrain with a miled power boost and the same interior is ridiculous at this stage and given how far in the lifecycle toyota has stretched this ute going into 2024!
Why are the hilux wheels always smaller then the competitors
That silver looking rail under the front number plate looks like a towel rail.
Does the engine have something different, or is it just a better repro?
I can't sleep now
Hmmm 130km/h
Where can you drive that speed in Sydney?
My concern is I am 6 foot 1 Inch or 185 CM. Is it fit for me in the driver s Sit?
Ranger raptor is still the one to go for
So whats the best ford comparison to this ute Paul? You didn’t answer that at end of the vid. Is it even wildtrack competition? Sorry Toyota fans. I am a fan too but i would like to know.
Crazy no all wheel drive for hard surfaces. Prado and pajero had AWD since the 90's
