Playing 12 for beginners is also a great way to learn finger positioning for your chords because they force you to be very precise pushing down two strings vs just one. I improved my technique and finger strength way faster playing 12 string. And a bonus, they sound amazing
@@beast6092 they take a little practice to get faster at tuning but I’ve never had tuning issues with mine. Its been able to hold a tune for days with adjustment and it only take like 2-3 minutes to retune. I wouldn’t let it deter someone from getting a 12
Saw Colin Hay (formerly in Men At Work) live, he was talking about 12-strings, how he and Ron Strykert would “get stoned and spend hours trying to tune it.” 😂
String bends on a 12 string are never going to work out well. They can’t, physics. The octave pair strings are vastly different in diameter and different lengths. Also the B and small E strings, while the same diameter, really need to be tuned a few cents apart for optimal chime effect. The very nature of the 12 string just does not lend itself to bends. Open chords, arpeggios, and suspended chords are magical.

It was actually very informative, he stated that the 12 string guitar actually plays the same way you would a normal guitar, now the onlycatch is you must know how to play a normal guitar first in order for you to find this video informative.
The first time I picked a 12 string was in guitar center and it was beautiful and it was very easy. It’s like switching from training wheels to no training wheels.
I play balalaika and ukulele, I was able to try one in a guitar store today and honestly I loved it. The tuning is a little bit of work, but with some lute family experience and music knowledge it’s pretty easy to improvise. Though I obviously didn’t know any chords. Also, you’re the one who really inspired me to learn Balalaika with your vids on it, I’m glad I did too, it’s the perfect introduction to lute style instruments. I’ll probably never play guitar (planning on learning the Lute) but if I do it’ll for sure be the 12 string since the strings are spaced such that I feel way more comfortable playing it.
Two things I recommend about the 12 string guitar. If you haven’t played guitar for a while, don’t begin with the 12 string sticks to a six string to get back in the plane or do you just stick to 12 string guitar? Honestly they’re fun to play and put you in the middle of lead in rhythm guitar you’ll be the middle guitarist or the lead rhythm guitarist yes, there’s a such thing as lead rhythm.
I'd never owned one before, but got a cheaper one for a Christmas gift. Turns out all the songs I wrote previous to owning one were all meant to be played on the 12 string!
I played a 12 string acoustic at a guitar store recently. I just picked it up and started playing normally. It was fucking awesome. Thought about buying it, but it cost two months of working 50 hour weeks lmfao
It’s really REALLY hard to go back to a 6 string after playing with a 12 string. Not in the sense of difficulty, but in the sense of richness. The 6 string feels so empty after playing a 12 string 😅
That is what it is though. Lol. It's misleading to hear 12 string guitar haha. You're always fretting 2 strings atleast. You can't actually individually press all strings
They play the same almost, but you can’t treat them the same, that tension needs to be carefully monitored. Humidity and time can cause a lot of problems that can’t be fixed. Store with less tension on the neck and keep it in its case.
My uncle has a “12 string” he only has the 6 strings you would find in a standard guitar bc he doesn’t like the feel of the 12 string but finds the headstock cool.
The playing doesn't scare me, I'm more scared of the maintainence and tuning lmao I'm aware those things get easier, and when I have the money and space I'll get one hahaha I'm just nervous about those things
I‘m currently learning the drums and wanted to ask what you recomment me doing. I don‘t wanna take lessons or pay a lot of money (probably not more than 30.-). I currently have the basics down and play along with some songs.
they are called -semi-hollow and that really catches what they are the inbetween, they aren't full resonance of an acoustic or full quietness of a solid body, they are in between, also it effects the electric feedback, a solid body will have the least feedback, a semi-hollow they get some proneness to feedback, acoustics have crazy proneness to feedback because they are the most physically resonant i.e. most acoustic
also strings can really effect loudness and tone, chrome is softer than nickle which is softer than steel, flatwounds are quieter and lower but can carry tone and have longer resonance and are literally softer, a steel round is gonna be way brighter and with more attack but less hold, if you looked at both as a sound wave a chrome flats wave is gonna be smaller and longer, the steel rounds are gonna be higher and have lots of peaks but doesn't go as long, and you also have half rounds which are like half flat half round in between.
As a bass player with dyslexia, it took me a hot minute to realize it's not normal to have 12 strings cuz in my brain my head thinks 6 and 12 are the same 😭😭😭😭
tuning moment
LMFAO 😭
LMFAO 😭
going into drop c
String change moment
LMFAO 😭

Yea but they are a pain in the ass to tune
@@beast6092 i mean not ideal to tune but it’s really not a huge deal to me atleast
@@PadawanIan It's something you get used to. Still easier than teaching the bass player how to tune 4 strings.

I’m a huge men at work fan to rip Greg ham
Colin hay is the definition of someone’s funny grandfather. 😂
Ohh when you said Men At Work I immediately thought of the adult…. Nvm
"Play it exactly the same as a normal guitar"
- string bends have entered the chat -
The only 12 strings I've messed around on didn't stay in tune when bent on. And tuning them sucks. I would definitely like to get a good model.
😂😂😂

It’s doable but extremely difficult
The one time I tried I broke two strings at once. Never again.

Hes telling it how it is though
He’s trying to say that the strings repeat, you you can play the guitar like normal.
I love TH-cam comments
It was actually very informative, he stated that the 12 string guitar actually plays the same way you would a normal guitar, now the onlycatch is you must know how to play a normal guitar first in order for you to find this video informative.
Your fingers are too big to play all 12 strings. Each set of 2 strings is like 1 string for your finger.
The first time I picked a 12 string was in guitar center and it was beautiful and it was very easy. It’s like switching from training wheels to no training wheels.
Yep, the tuning however...
Just takes twice as long.
@@AmazingMrMe123 I haven't put new strings on yet. I'll take your word for it! ;-)

twelve-string guitars are widely used in the Mexican regional and are usually called docerola
It’s likely the 12 string is of Mexican origin.
Or requinto
My favorite piece for a 12-string guitar is Closer to the Heart by Rush. One of my all-time favorite songs from my all time favorite band.
The sound of this thing is awesome
I've been playing 12-String Guitar (same as what you have) and I still enjoy it. Mostly play Rockabilly, Jangle-Pop, and more.
I haven't seen Rob in ages this was a jump scare on my feed
Just those few chords spoke to my love of 90's dream pop and ethereal wave, and I kinda want to own one now.
I love my 8 string Ibanez acoustic!! Doesn't murder your fingers like a 12 string will! I've been playing for over 25 years!
I just bought a Guild 12 string, jumbo body, loving it.
I got a 12 string when I was 15, at 16 I was playing keg parties standing in the back of a pickup truck in the winter. That was 1975, rock on bro!
that guitar sounds and look beatiful
I love how the strings harmonize.
Love the fact that this is much easier than a 7 string
12 string is literally the musical epitomy of "double it and give it to the next person".
Me: picks it up
Also me: Starts tapping
for me its the buying and tuning side as someone who owns a bouzouki been putting off restringing for a while
I picked up a 12 string at a music store and was able to play it immediately.
I have the same model and color gretsch. It's one of my favorites too.
Wow so inspirational. Just play it, that's his whole message. Why didn't I think of that?
😂😂😂
amazing! now all I have to now is save up for one 😂😔
This man still instinctively plays "do you want to?" From that second year of first of October
That Gretish sounds great 👍👍 oo

12 string guitar: **exist**
Mexican music: "Guess we'll take that now?" 🤷♂️
You can play it exactly like a regular guitar but the 12 string is also used for single notes too. Thinking of all the 12 string riffs we know.
I'd never owned one before, but got a cheaper one for a Christmas gift. Turns out all the songs I wrote previous to owning one were all meant to be played on the 12 string!

12 strings are used in mexican music alot too! Take a look at Ariel Camacho. Hes a beast with a 12 string doing alternate picking
El rey de corazones
Carlos Ulices Gomez is really good too, check out his cover of El Gross
Mexicans know how to rock that

I love my 12 string! Got it in Osan South Korea in 2004. It's made by MR POTATO! CHEERS!
Master of puppets boutta sound devilish
Closer To The Heart
That’s so true
I can’t it play while looking at it lol
You know... I always just assumed it was like a 6 string but with each string doubled.
Thats how i play them. I take off the octave strings and put pairs of 10s.
That is what it is though. Lol. It's misleading to hear 12 string guitar haha. You're always fretting 2 strings atleast. You can't actually individually press all strings

Dang I want that kind of 12 string so bad
Reminds me of the Puerto Rican guitar called "Cuatro"
it sounds like there are two guitar's playing in sync
Ive got a cheap Vangoa 12 strings guitar and it's so sharp !!! 😅
Always when I picked one up, strumming was no problem but as soon as I was playing Dust in the wind i just couldnr lol
Thank you bro I was wondering how you did that

Forget tuning I can’t imagine what it’s like to replace the strings or adjust the action on it
That's a big charango you got there
I have a 12 string. I don't play it much. The neck is like a railroad tie.
I wore those shoes, rob
People : "How do we play an 12 string guitar?"
This dude : "wdym by that? just play the goddamn guitar"
Any I have owned the neck was an issue, too much tension. Continually need to adjust the truss rod.
The extra 6 strings are actually just the same notes as the one it's paired up with with I think a different octave

I’m not intimidated by a twelve string, I just don’t want to bother with putting strings on it haha. It just seems like it’s a whole long ass process.
What about solo?

Are hollow body electric guitars like the Gretch as loud as an acoustic without an amp, or does the hollowness just add to the tone?

Do not finger pick a 12, is damn near impossible I swear
It’s not that difficult and I have incredibly tiny and weak hands and can’t do fast licks at all. Finger picking a twelve string is fairly easy
Unless you're Anthony Phillips, somehow that man can do it perfectly
