We can not diminish the fact that John Denver was and continues to be a huge influence regarding the 12 String Guitar. He joined the Chad Mitchell Trio with his 12 back in 1965 as well as releasing his stellar hit “Leaving one a Jet Plane” that same year. I realize that many people choose to either forget or refuse to acknowledge John Denver as an incredible artist, humanitarian and alternative energy developer. The songs that he wrote with the influence of the 12 String are so many that I would have to guess more than any other artist has or ever will be. His influence on my musical life has been profound, bordering on the spiritual. I started listening to him in 1970, pricked up the guitar that same year and have not sat it down for even a moment. Thanks for a great video and wonderful lesson..
I agree 100% with your comments, with an exception. Every video I’ve watched he plays 6 string but is so talented, he makes it sound like 12. An amazing gifted man who was unappreciated due to the tidal wave of progressive rock music in the early 70s. Friends mocked me when I went to one of his concerts and bought a t-shirt. Their loss.
@@seekingwisdom8 Jim, thank you so much. There are many concert videos available where John Denver plays his 12, especially the concert in Amsterdam and London. As an addition, many of the songs that John Denver composed and played were the seminal hits in his early days. Songs off of the albums Rhymes and Reasons (1969), Take Me To Tomorrow (1970), Whose Garden Was This (1970), Poems, Prayers and Promises (Album cover has him posing with the Guild 12 String) (1971) are many songs that were composed on the 12 String but they were unfortunately only played at certain concerts and not video taped. Your remark about him playing the 6 String but how it sounded like a 12 is quite astute. On the album Evening with John Denver (1975) there are many times you can hear that exact effect. Notably, there were 5-6 guitar players on stage with him but the effect was spot on. Have a great weekend and Thank You for the opportunity to reminisce about John Denver and his incredible catalog of songs.
@@ariverrunsthroughitfans9002 Thank You for your response. The John Denver Sanctuary in Aspen is absolutely wonderful and a fitting tribute to him. Many many years ago i volunteered for a summer at the Windstar Foundation in Snomass. While there I had the great pleasure of meeting and working alongside John Denver, his wife Annie and Thomas Crumb as well as 50 of the most incredible volunteers I have ever had the pleasure to know and be a part of. There isn’t a day that passes that I don’t look back and wish....I’ll leave it there. I hope you have a great weekend and Thank You for replying..
@@RealPeterGunn I’m a drummer, so I rarely paid attention to what type of instrument other musicians play. But John Denver captured my attention with the opening of Rocky Mountain High. To this day, I have the same feelings I had the first time I heard it.
I was fortunate enough to meet Roger McGuinn a few years ago when he joined Marty Stuart at the Ryman for a charity concert. He’s just as nice and engaging as he appears. A really good guy.
I knew it was that song, just from the title of this video. Yes, I'm an old timer who's been gigging with dozens of bands since the mid-1960's. I also love the how the bass comes into that song, he starts on the low E, and then slides quickly up, an octave higher. Classic.
That picture of Leadbelly holding his 12 string is so iconic for me like several others, when I was 16 I spent hours looking at it while listening to his haunting voice, and those Rickies always has a classic look about them, long live Roger McGuinn!
I love Leadbelly like a dear uncle. Blue Tail Fly. Tho I wouldn't want to get in an argument with him over a woman. I heard he killed a guy by throwing a rock at his head, when that scenario erupted, walking in Texarkana (where else?).
I knew it. I was 13 and at a friend's house out front when I first heard The Byrd's "Mr. Tamborine Man," playing on a radio somewhere nearby. I froze in my tracks and listened to the entire song. I was a fan from then on. I've seen Roger McQuinn perform live many times since. Doing this song is the highlight of his performances. Beautiful beyond words.
Hey Bruce. This was one of the first videos I ever made and there are many things I could have done better. Thankfully, as you say, at the core was McGuinn's brilliant riff. He actually emailed me after seeing this. Most of stuff is less documentary style and a lot more playing. I’d really appreciate it if you would check out my 25 FAMOUS 12 STRING RIFFS VIDEO th-cam.com/video/8Eteg4fqQ-E/w-d-xo.html or one of my many 12 string covers LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS is a good one and I made a pretty cool video too th-cam.com/video/vZdVOj1wSr8/w-d-xo.html. I love the 12 string What really got me was hearing Barry McGuire play it. Partly because of his work in the New Cristy minstrels and partly from his own tunes. I still have several of his albums. But of course who could forget Roger McGuinn there was so much great musician the 60’s. When Rock still had soul.

@@8MinuteAxe it wasnt meant as a criticism, it was just for those like me who might have very limited time to find what they're looking for. Cheers, :)
I didn't take it as criticism. Believe me, after 500k views on this, I've had my fair share of crazy comments. My favorites are the ones where someone tells me to 'F off'. I remember the 1963 Rooftop Singers intro on "Walk Right In" and the 1964 Seekers "I'll Never Find Another You" 12 string intro when folk music was changing to rock/pop..
Hey Dave. Absolutely Walk Right In was a huge hit and the fact that they used TWO 12 strings guitars was very notable. I recently read a great article about how they had to wait to record some of the promo films for the song because Gibson hadn't finished the lefty 12 string yet. And of course the Seekers had several hits that featured the 12. I'm still a sucker for Georgy Girl. LOL. No doubt "Walk Right In" by the Rooftop Singers did it for me, two full years before "Hey Mr. Tambourine Man". It was an international hit. And it was more than an eight note riff. The entire song utilized the 12 string. It was the reason I bought my first one, and still play one today.

I’m an Aussie, and there is a folk group from Melbourne called ‘The Seekers’. Keith Potger played the 12 string for them. I’d suggest listening to them. They’re pretty good.

As a long-time 12-string enthusiast, I think you've got it. Sounds like The Byrds to me! BTW, I peg the 12-string "explosion" to The Rooftop Singers' 1962 hit, _Walk Right In._ Can't be certain, though. Also important, I think, was _I'll Never Find Another You,_ 1965, by The Seekers. It was the #1 song of the year in Britain. Come to think of it, either of those would be a dynamite cover for you to show us in one of your 12-string sessions. I do Walk in A; Find in C; you're free to make different choices, of course. Fred
Hey Fred. I'm not sure how I missed responding to this. I know you've already seen the cover I did of Walk Right in and gave a nod to the Seekers but here it is again in case you're bored. LOL. Agreed for sure as Keith Potger's 12 string arpeggios on Georgie Girl are angelic and follow the whistling perfectly. The Seekers did popularize the 12 string guitar in early 1960s pop and folk music and opened the door to the introduction of the 12 string electric guitar.
Walk Right In was one of the coolest 12 string riffs. I used to have an album of Glen Campbell that featured him on 12 string. This was before he became famous as a singer, and there was only one song where he sang.
Hey William. I know it well. I've performed it at least 20 times on the channel and I did an entire video on it called THE SONG THAT MADE THE 12 STRING FAMOUS th-cam.com/video/SfvYO9oPEv4/w-d-xo.html. In the late 60's, my band was practicing the Byrd's song, 'FEEL A WHOLE LOT BETTER' in the cafeteria of the all-boys HS. We had two voices singing a harmonizing lead, and two other voices singing a harmonized back-up. The entire Italian staff (it all happened in Rome Italy), came out of the kitchen and into the big hall - and applauded and cheered.

Lmao Donald. This is random, but have you read Peter Guralnicks bio on Elvis. The best bio I've ever read by far and I'm not a huge Elvis fan. I appreciate the honesty of your comment. Its interesting, this video did well when I first uploaded, then sat doing nothing for almost a year, and now views are through the roof. I got a lot of great comments (positive and constructive) but lately many about the too much talking. The video is only 4 minutes. Let me ask you, is it because of the title that you just want the darn riff? I'm not being sarcastic or being a jerk, I'm really curious. @@8MinuteAxe I guess my comment stems from the fact that I was taught to be an effective communicator I should be as brief as possible. BTW the video is great.
Hey M CD. Thanks for checking out the video. I have to tell you, this is one of the first videos I did and all of a sudden a year later I've gotten 50,000 views in the last three days. And I've gotten quite a few comments about talking to much (or shutting up. :). I'm sure most of the people that write negative stuff are nice, they just forget that there's a real person at the other end of the comment. I guess I should have titled it 'A Brief History of the 12 String'. I think then people wouldn't be so antsy for me to 'get to the darn riff'. To boot, I didn't even play it well. For me, it wasn’t the talk, per se, it was the anticipation. So, maybe just a reveal earlier in the vid. Otherwise, well-researched, informative, and interesting.
I had a 12 string Alvarez in 1975. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. I lived in an apartment off base. One day when I was on duty, someone broke into my apartment and stole it and my 13 B&W tv. I was making less than 400 dollars a month so it never got replaced unfortunately. I loved that guitar. It was so easy to play.

@@8MinuteAxe I bought an Echo Ranger 12 back in about 1980, figured out how to play chords, and went on to play in a church group. I fitted a pickup into it by pulling the strap button off and replacing it with a 1/4inch socket, then stuck the pickup under the bridge inside. It needs a pre-amp, but it works pretty well, only picking up the strings and no ambient noise at all. Haven't played it in decades, my fingers aren't quite as nimble as they used to be.
So many great 12 string songs! For me, the most iconic 12 string tune is Steve Howe's "Sketches in the Sun". Obviously, this was long after the Byrds, but it's the tune that always makes me admire the 12 string.

I knew mr tambourine man used a 12S, but I thought for sure it was Boston's More Than A Feeling that gave life to that style of guitar. I was even going to mention Bon Jovi's Dead or Alive, but that's already mid 80's. Thanks for that little history lesson, I enjoyed it.
And You and I is my favorite Yes songs and one of the best songs ever. I'm working on a cover of it for the channel. Stay tuned. Keith Potger was the 12 player. A Maton guitar (Australian brand made well known by Tommy Emmanuel, though Keef Richards has some). His intro to I'll Never Find Another You is a Beauty for 12s. NO issue with your Byrds choice though. I was listening from Australia in 1968 though.
Hey Jock. This was one of the first videos I ever did and was solely based on an interview I read with Dick Burke, the guy who designed the Ric12. I did a much better video with a lot more playing including featuring the I'll Never riff! THE SONG THAT MADE THE 12 STRING FAMOUS th-cam.com/video/SfvYO9oPEv4/w-d-xo.html. Hey Demetria. I've done over 60 12 string videos. I have tons of lessons. Steve Goodman played 12 string - after being diagnosed and told that he had a chronic leukemia, he took the train down to New Orleans to meet his future wife and her parents. On the way he wrote "City Of New Orleans" (covered by Arlo Guthrie) - and performed it on a 12 string later in concert. Now there was a real guitarist - someone who mastered the instrument and didn't just strum it.
Hey Jim. You obviously know your stuff. You're only about the 3rd or 4th person to mention Steve. He was an incredible player and unfortunately never got the acclaim he deserved. It was solely based on an interview I read with Dick Burke, the guy who designed the Ric 12. It was one of the first videos I ever made and it's not very good. I've made about 60 12 string videos since and I'm currently working on a video specifically about Blind Willie and Leadbelly and their use of the 12 string. Hey David. Your comment came through twice. I'm sending the same response just in case you didn't get the other one. :) Hey David. You are 100% correct. I even play one 12 string right handed and one left handed in the video ( a la the Rooftop Singers and handle the female vox!). Please get back to me and let me know what you think. Agree. Even b4 I watched the video, I thought either 'Walk RIght In' or 'Mr. T-Man'. When I heard that rich sound of the 12-string on 'Walk Right In', as a 12 year old, I wanted to play guitar. The solo in it is remarkable too.
Between the whole Hard Days Night album and the resultant rise of The Byrds I think that handles the all-time impetus for ELECTRIC 12-string. I got into acoustic 12-string because of David Bowie but they’re always cool to me. I always found Blind Willie McTell’s playing awesome, I wish I could fingerpick on doubled strings like that.

I do not know how to play an instrument or read music, but after watching this video and seeing how well you broke each note down individually, I feel like I could pick up a guitar and play along with you! You did a great job!
Maybe this is a good time to find an instrument, a sound you like or catches your eye and ears give it a shot. Now with tabs, (tablature) you don't need to learn reading notes as it tells you which finger goes where. Maybe you'll think of your own song and you can entertain all of us or at least your family.
@@8MinuteAxe Do! If you haven't already - it's a fabulous song! I compare lead singer Beverly Bivens' performance on this song, to Judith Durham of the Seekers ( _Georgy Girl,_ _I'll Never Find Another You,_ _World of Our Own,_ _The Carnival Is Over,_ _Morningtown Ride,_ etc.). Their voices aren't exactly similar, but both are excellent and very strong, in a way that their singing sticks with you once you've heard it. As for the song, it was written by Sylvia Fricker of Canadian folk duo, Ian & Sylvia ( _Four Strong Winds,_ _Someday Soon,_ _Darcy Farrow,_ _Spanish Is a Lovin Tongue_ ). Ian Tyson is a top-flight songwriter, too, just BTW, having written much of I&S's repertoire. And I&S also recorded _You Were on My Mind;_ it's worth a listen for comparison with We Five's version. Fred
@@8MinuteAxe Check out the original by Ian and Sylvia, a Canadian duo, from one year earlier. Now that's a nice 12 string sound. Sylvia wrote that song before she married Ian.
The song that really got me into the 12 string was Wish You Were Here, I didn't know that that song was played on a 12 string but I just knew something sounded weird, like the sound was bigger than a normal guitar, then I looked it up and everything fell into place!
Only the intro part that sounds like a radio and the underlying rhythm throughout the song were recorded on a 12-string. A 1969 Martin D12-35 to be exact. It was a matter of necessity, not planned. The intro was originally recorded on a D35 6-string. They pulled the AM radio out of Gilmour's car, brought into the studio, and fed the recording through it. But, it sounded flat, so he switched to the 12-35. The reason being the fact that the low frequency sounds got muddied and lost when processed through the radio. The additional, fatter strings on the 12-string helped cut through. I've seen PF six times and Gilmour always played the primary acoustic part on a Martin D35, a Taylor 712CE ( th-cam.com/video/3j8mr-gcgoI/w-d-xo.html ), or his Gibson J-200, the underlying 12-string rhythm by another guitarist (pre-breakup - Snowy White). If you try playing the intro solo or main solo on a 12-string, it sounds way off with far too much bottom-end because of the extra, fatter E,A, and D strings. Interestingly enough, when I saw them in '77 for the "In the Flesh" tour at Anaheim Stadium, there was no acoustic. He played it on his Fender Strat "Blackie". Much of the reason the 6-string sounds bigger is the custom Pete Cornish pedal board Gilmour used. An electro-harmonix Electric Mistress pedal makes any guitar sound bigger due to the chorus effect.
This is probably the riff that made the "electric" 12-string famous, but the song that popularised the 12-string and introduced it to most folks was the Rooftop Singers' 1962 recording of Gus Cannon's "Walk Right In", recorded on twin Gibson B-45-12 strings.
Hey Jim. I agree with you 100%. This was one of the first videos I ever made and was based on an interview I read with Dick Burke, the guy who created the Ric 12 string. I recently did a much better history of the 12 string with a lot more playing including a full cover of Walk Right In called THE SONG THAT MADE THE 12 STRING FAMOUS th-cam.com/video/SfvYO9oPEv4/w-d-xo.html. I even played one of the 12 string parts left handed just like the original! ;) I do a ton of Beatles 12 string covers including LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS (I handle all of the harmony instruments on the 12) th-cam.com/video/vZdVOj1wSr8/w-d-xo.html. Please let me know what you think. Either way, thanks for watching this one. I appreciate your time and comment. Have a great day and take care. -Mark
My favorite 12-string riffs are "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Turn! Turn! Turn!," and "What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round." Roger McGuinn and Michael Nesmith both made me fall in love with the beautiful jangle jangle of the 12-string.
Hey Athena. You're gonna get 3 of the 4 riffs you mentioned and 20+ more in this much better video 25 FAMOUS 12 STRING RIFFS th-cam.com/video/8Eteg4fqQ-E/w-d-xo.html. Let me know what you think. Barry was great, he connected well with his audience. He told stories that made you laugh and connected you to the music. I think I have several of his Albums from the 70’s. Then he seemed to drop off the map.
Thomas. A lot of these guys made good careers for themselves. I was talking to another viewer yesterday about Jim Peterik (he wrote and sang Vehicle for Ides of March). I never knew that he was co founder of Survivor and wrote Eye of the Tiger as well as Hold on Loosely for 38 Special. I like to hear these things. Maybe it gives me hope that I still have one more chapter to write. LOL. Thanks so much for the follow up. I really appreciate you getting back to me. Have an amazing day. Take care! -Mark
Hey Thomas. The channel is starting to grow a little. I'm still doing everything 100% free but I finally have a couple of sponsors so I can give away some cool stuff. "Walk Right In" by the Rooftop Singers in the early '60s featured a trio, a woman, and two guys, all singing a folk song and the men each playing two 12 string guitars. This tune was very famous. The 12 string guitar was always liked by any who heard it, and it was used on many recordings.
Hey again John. I see that you caught my video on Walk Right In. I hoped you liked my rendition of it. I took some liberties with the solo but I feel like I paid homage to it well enough. Again, many thanks. Mark
Hey Michael. Absolutely, Walk Right In was the song that put the 12 string on the map. This was literally one of the first videos I ever did and I based it on an article I read with Dick Burke, the guy who created the Rick 12. He talked about how they went flying off the shelves after Mr. Tambourine Man and A Hard Day's Night came out. I recorded Walk Right In a couple of weeks ago and I'm doing it as part of a longer video. If you guys have a few and any of you are Beatles fans, I'm performing the entire Sgt Pepper album on the 12 string this year on my channel. I've already done A Day in the Life and I recently uploaded Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. The video for this one is pretty cool too. LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS COVER AND LESSON th-cam.com/video/vZdVOj1wSr8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. If you have a few, please check it out and let me know what you think. I just gave away 5 brand new 12 strings over the past three months and I have a nice Orangewood up for grabs this month. Either way, thanks for all of the great comments. I really appreciate your time and input. Please take care and be well. -Mark
The musician to really introduce the 12-string was Lead Belly in the 30s. He had a huge influence on music in the 60s and the musicians who were using 12s, like the Byrds and Beatles. “No Lead Belly, No Beatles” -George Harrison

Yes indeed, thank you-the very first song that truly brought the 12-string guitar, Electricrickenbacker or acoustic, into the public consciousness was the signature McGuinnism that was the opening riff of Mr. Tambourine Man (in which you play too many notes toward the end, go back and listen), and how its featured sound kept authoritatively jangling and cheerfully ringing throughout the song., giving it a unique signature sound that'd never before been experienced as the vital and upfront foundation of an entire song. It becomes a part of the musical muscle memory of whoever hears it. Before that, noone really knew about the 12-string directly, it was just another instrument (like, say, a zither) orchestrated into some songs' accompaniment.
Hey Kenny. I can't believe I missed your comment. I just wanted to say thanks and sorry for the delay. I hope you're well. Take care and enjoy the rest of your day. -Mark
Hey Mark, no problem. I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had enough time to look at my emails and messages either. I hope that all is well with you. I’m looking forward to your next video.
Before I click play I'd like to say that my nominee would be "Walk Right In" by the Rooftop Singers, because I'm old and it's the first time I encountered 12 string, and I know it was a big international hit, even making #1 way down South here in NZ! Edit: OK, fine, I'll give you The Byrds.

I remember watching "Hootenanny" tv show and that's where I first saw a 12 string. I had not even thought about playing a guitar at that time but was intrigued by the size of it. When I started playing and getting into music, I fell in love with Buffalo Springfield. it was then that I saw photos of Richie's bit 12 string Gibson and that's when I got hooked. Have had a 12 since 1971 and love them to this day forward.

The Rickenbacker reversed 12 string was what gave the Beatles middle career its distinctive sound. If I Needed Someone is the classic mid-Beatles sound. If anything was going to be famous in the 60s, it involved The Beatles. Surely, the intro to California Dreamin', The Byrds, or Mr Tambourine Man, are what made the acoustic 12 string famous in the sixties - then later a song like Give a Little Bit by Supertramp in the mid-70s reintroduced the acoustic 12 string into popular music.

The New Seekers "I'll Never Find Another You" is another example of some great 12-string guitar playing (in addition to most John Denver materials and the group America).

I agree with your choice, for me at least, having been born mid-1950s. But in the passing of years I find that arpeggio from "Turn! Turn! Turn!" also unforgettable. It still stops me in my tracks every time I hear it.

Well done, great classic riff. Hillman showed up at Guitar Town fest a few years back and with some other great players, did a short set of Byrds tunes, very great to hear live.
Hey again Dennis. That's awesome. I love Hillman's playing. A little off subject but I remember reading about how Brilliant 'Sweetheart/Rodeo' was and how disappointed I was when I finally found a copy at a garage sale in the 90s. I get it now but at the time it was hard to measure how much of a breakthrough album it was. To my 16 year old ears, it was just run of the mill country rock. I have an entirely new appreciation for it now! Have a great day and thanks again for your time. -Mark

Hey Mike. Absolutely Walk Right In was a huge hit and the fact that they used TWO 12 strings guitars was very notable. I recently read a great article about how they had to wait to record some of the promo films for the song because Gibson hadn't finished the lefty 12 string yet. This was one of my first videos and it was simply based on an interview I read with Rick 12 string creator Dick Burke who said that the Rick 12s went flying off the shelves after the Byrds released Mr. Tambourine Man. This is certainly not one of my best videos but all of a sudden it's received 200k views in the last week. I'd really appreciate it if you'd check out a newer video from the channel. Hey man. I LOVE the intro to Who's Behind the Door. I remember listening to it on a cassette that my brother and I had. 's. @@ChristopherSmith-bh4sz I think he's talking about "Hear My Train a comin acoustic." Guitar World magazine had a great transcription of it back in the 90s. Jimis 12 guitar is tuned 3 whole steps down . Theres another very similar version of Jimi playing this w/o video.
I bought a Mitchell 12 string after trying everyone GC had in their acoustic room and it sounded better than any other one, regardless of price. Headstock snobs won't agree I'm sure. The video is great and thoroughly enjoyed the history and the intro lesson. It sounds correct to me!
Hey Bryan. I just recorded this video with 10 different 12 string guitars and if you listen to the Mitchell on That's the Way it's hard to argue with you! th-cam.com/video/8Eteg4fqQ-E/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. Hey Michael. I couldn't agree with you more. This was one of the first videos I ever made and was based on an interview I read with Dick Burke, the guy who created the Ric 12 string. I recently did a much better history of the 12 string with a lot more playing including making a point to say that the first chord in AHDN is the defining moment. Also cover the Seekers and a full cover of Walk Right In called THE SONG THAT MADE THE 12 STRING FAMOUS th-cam.com/video/SfvYO9oPEv4/w-d-xo.html. @@8MinuteAxe Mark, I watched your work on Lucy in the Sky and was quite impressed. It's astounding how many influential sounds and techniques The Beatles inspired. I was around then and witnessed it. By the way, the Hard Days Night movie inspired David Crosby to form the Byrds. No Beatles, no Byrds. Take care and stay well!
Hey Michael. I really appreciate you taking time out of your day to follow up and watch another of my videos. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Know that I value your time and and I'm grateful for it. It's funny. Most of my close friends my entire life were always my age or younger. Things have changed over the past two years however. I've met several people on the channel who I would consider to be good friends, many others casual friends, and others more than aquantances. The majority of the people I talk to now are mostly 10 to 20 years older than me. That's the way to do it. I gain much more wisdom from you all. And I need it. LOL. The best thing about the community here is no egos. The core 200-300 that interacts regularly are all so supportive and I've connected many people with other people close to them geographically, or that strike me as very like minded. This whole adventure has been a ton of work but a lot of fun and I've learned so much more music history. I thought I was a music trivia savant but I'm getting the living oral history. It's different and so much better. Anyway, I'm rambling. Shoot me an email anytime at markaranalli@gmail.com. It sometimes takes a few days to catch up and get back to everybody but I return every single one. I tell everybody that if they email me and don't get a response within a week to please email me again and let me have it. LOL That keeps me honest. Have a great evening. Oh, one last thing. Don't worry, I don't sell anything. LOL. -Mark

My influence for my 12 string work with The Seekers was Pete Seeger and my riff etc on I'll Never Find Another You was channeling him I guess. My influence for my riff and solo in A World Of Our Own was James Burton. Walk Right In was part of the story too. Erik Darling (the 12 string guitarist in the Rooftop Singers) had earlier taken over from Pete Seeger in The Weavers. I tuned my 12 string down one tone to D standard. This was really because Judith Durham's comfort key was Bb. This meant that I could play in Bb using Cmajor chord shapes. That's why the riff on INFAY turned out the way it did.

Hey Vickie. Kottke is one of my biggest influences and one of my guitar heroes. I'm working on a full length 12 string doc and I'm hoping to land an interview with him for it. Nesmith finally gave in. (what a privilege ) Sadly that particular 12 string Gretsch of Nesmith's was stolen in the late 70's when he was on tour. No one has seen hide nor hair of it since.

Thanks for this interesting lesson. Along with the Byrds & others mentioned in comments, the Seekers always come to mind when considering the 12-string - I'll never find another you, Georgy Girl, etc.
Hey Tom. This was one of the first videos I ever did for the channel and I got the idea from an interview I read by the head designer at Rickenbacker who talked about how 12 strings went flying off the shelves after Mr T Man came out. Certainly, my history has HUGE gaps in it. Leadbelly was as important as anyone and was THE pioneer. I missed all the great songs by the Seekers. I also missed the Rooftop Singers song Walk Right In. Actually, the instrumental break on Walk Right In (Rooftop Singers, 1963) contains the riff that made acoustic 12 string famous. The riff that caught everyone's ear that made the 12 string electric famous was McGuinn's Turn Turn Turn riff, even though Mr. Tambourine Man was released earlier.

Their loss.
John Denver is awesome. I've been to the John Denver Sanctuary in Aspen. It's a wonderful spot.
I'm envious. lol
@@msoiseth3419 Me too!!
Goodnight Irene, about 1930? On record somewhere
Walk Right In by the Rooftop Singers was the song I'd choose.
Certainly in the U.K.,this was a big hit and introduced people to the sound of the 12 string.
Erik Darling, 12 string guitar; Bill Svanoe, vocals, guitar; Lynne Taylor, vocals. Definitely made a huge impression in 1962.
i agree
Yes!
Such an iconic and gorgeous riff. Can't imagine how it made the intended audience feel.
Hey Bruce. This was one of the first videos I ever made and there are many things I could have done better. Thankfully, as you say, at the core was McGuinn's brilliant riff. I love the 12 string What really got me was hearing Barry McGuire play it. Partly because of his work in the New Cristy minstrels and partly from his own tunes. I still have several of his albums. But of course who could forget Roger McGuinn there was so much great musician the 60’s. When Rock still had soul.

No doubt "Walk Right In" by the Rooftop Singers did it for me, two full years before "Hey Mr. Tambourine Man". It was an international hit. And it was more than an eight note riff. The entire song utilized the 12 string. It was the reason I bought my first one, and still play one today.

Those are the two songs I remember also. Responsible for my recognizing other 12 string songs that came later.

For me the first notable 12 string sound was the song "Walk right in, sit right down" by the Rooftop Singers in 1963.
Yes!
@@quickaura Exactly- '62?

Absolutely
Yes and that was out when the Beatles were still learning how to play in Hamburg.
I'd argue that "Turn, Turn, Turn" from the same awesome band was the first really popular use of the 12 string in the history of music.
Of cource ! loved that song ! :)
My vote for 12 string riff would be 1964 The Seekers "I Know I'll Never Find Another You."

Wow, that took me back. Not only that it took me forward. The eternal guitar utopia--a world of its own. It is "the strings". The strings. Wow.
But it sucks when you have to tune it. Not that bad now with a snark though.
So many great 12 string songs! For me, the most iconic 12 string tune is Steve Howe's "Sketches in the Sun". Obviously, this was long after the Byrds, but it's the tune that always makes me admire the 12 string.
"Walk Right In" by The Rooftop Singers 1963 was the song that made me want a 12-string.
Written by Gus Cannon of Cannon's Jug Stompers in the 1920s.

Hotel California by The Eagles got me started on a 12 String. I've had several,(Fender, handmade, etc.) but now I have a Takamine. The Takamine is the easiest and best sounding 12 String I have ever played.

Yes , I thought it was "Walk Right In" that came first .

Very iconic - first song I learned on the guitar!
“ You Were On My Mind” -1965( We Five )They were a San Francisco Bay Area folk group.
Not sure I know this one but I will check it out today. Thanks!! -Mark

I think a lot of people get into it that way
Only the intro part that sounds like a radio and the underlying rhythm throughout the song were recorded on a 12-string.
@@krkhns very cool, thanks for sharing!
Mark
I thought it was going to be “Walk Right In” which would have been three years earlier. That was my first 12-string song. Nice video
Hey Michael. Absolutely, Walk Right In was the song that put the 12 string on the map. This was literally one of the first videos I ever did and I based it on an article I read with Dick Burke, the guy who created the Rick 12.
You are so right, Mark! That is the first riff I think of when I think of the 12 string guitar. Great job! Love your videos. Please keep them coming.

@@8MinuteAxe . Again, stunning work mate, keep rocking👍👍
The first time I heard a 12 string was “Walk Right In” by the Rooftop Singers, 1963. It’s also the first riff I learned to play.
I agree with your choice, for me at least, having been born mid-1950s. But in the passing of years I find that arpeggio from "Turn! Turn! Turn!" also unforgettable. It still stops me in my tracks every time I hear it.
Hey BC. I couldn't agree with you more. So much so that when I did this review (which features a ton of classic electric 12 riffs, I chose that one to lead off the video!
-Mark

"Walk Right In" in 1961 did it for me with a 12 string solo.
Hey Mike. Absolutely Walk Right In was a huge hit and the fact that they used TWO 12 strings guitars was very notable. I recently read a great article about how they had to wait to record some of the promo films for the song because Gibson hadn't finished the lefty 12 string yet. The intro to Zebra's "Who's Behind the Door" may be the best 12 string riff, ever.
Hey man. I LOVE the intro to Who's Behind the Door. I remember listening to it on a cassette that my brother and I had. The 12 string that is the most influential is Harrison on a Hard Days Night. Also, Harrison's first chord on HDN is the most popular, too!
Hey Michael. I couldn't agree with you more. This was one of the first videos I ever made and was based on an interview I read with Dick Burke, the guy who created the Ric 12 string. @@8MinuteAxe Mark, I watched your work on Lucy in the Sky and was quite impressed. It's astounding how many influential sounds and techniques The Beatles inspired. I was around then and witnessed it. You guessed it. The ram wrote that he’d never find another EWE. (Sorry for the misfire above).🙁
Love the 12 string sooooo much. My brother has a Fender 12. We used to listen to Billy Strange for hours. ☮️ Peace 👍😎🌅

Seeker's song I'll never find another You has a 12 string riff that is kinda similar and it's in 1964
Hey Tim. Absolutely. The Seekers and the Rooftop Singers with Walk Right In had HUGE hits before the Byrds. Here's a cover I recently did of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS COVER AND LESSON th-cam.com/video/vZdVOj1wSr8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. I also try to be very interactive with the community that watches the channel. Here's a collab I did with a viewer on Ventura Highway VENTURA HIGHWAY (AMERICA) th-cam.com/video/amdfN3p_P4Y/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. The accompanying videos are much better too. I can't hear "12-string" without thinking "Rickenbacker" and McGuinn's jangling solo in the Byrd's "Feel A Whole Lot Better"
Hey racketman. I couldn't agree more. I use a Ric and 9 other 12 string guitars in this video 25 FAMOUS 12 STRING RIFFS th-cam.com/video/8Eteg4fqQ-E/w-d-xo.html. I appreciate your time and your comment. Take care and have a great day! -Mark
That's what I thought he was going to play! Awesome tune!
I'm going to do a better documentary that's more accurate and doesn't have so many misses. If you have a few minutes, I'd really appreciate it if you'd check out another video on my channel. My video making has gotten much better. Here's a cover of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds I recently did LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS COVER AND LESSON th-cam.com/video/vZdVOj1wSr8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. Couldn't help but post. I post on YT as Lee but I go by Tom.
Great Tom. Again, I really appreciate your time. Have a great evening. Time to tuck the kiddos in. :) -Mark
That's funny because I had The Searchers Needles and Pins (consecutive with The Seekers in alphabetical order in my collection).
@@bigneiltoo Searchers next to Seekers - well, that's logical!
Thank you for taking your time to figure the riff out and to produce the video. I really appreciate all of the information you provided. I hope that those unhappy with your production will one day acquire a bit more respect for the good faith efforts of one another; they may find it rewarding. 🙏🏼
Hey Peety. I thought I wrote back to you immediately when this comment came in (I remember it because I really appreciate you recognizing how much work it is to make a video) but I missed it. I truly apologize for the delay in saying THANK YOU. I can't tell you how much comments like these make the entire ride worth it. @@8MinuteAxe Very glad that you appreciated what I had to say. ‘Definitely will check out the links.
But.....it’ll be a while as I returned from the hospital today following. OPEN HEART SURGICAL REPLACEMENT OF MY ENLARGED ASCENDING AORTA ANEURYSM. I’m doing very well with my Dacron tube repair.
Cheers!
Peety. I wish you the best in your recovery. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Take it easy and be well. Mark
I was wondering where he was going to end up. The first time I ever even heard of a 12 string was Walk Right In.
Hey Dennis. Gordon Lightfoot, one of the most prolific writers used a twelve string since the late 50's.
Hey Gary. Great point. I'm a huge Gordo fan and I'm actually working on a cover of 'The Wreck' right now. Unfortunately, it got delayed as the guy that I had slated to play the pedal steel has been working a lot again and I'm waiting for him to lay down his part. I do a ton of Beatles 12 string covers including LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS (I handle all of the harmony instruments on the 12) th-cam.com/video/vZdVOj1wSr8/w-d-xo.html. Please let me know what you think. I also give away a brand new 12 string every month on the channel. Either way, thanks for watching this one. I appreciate your time and comment.
