  • How to Simplify Your Life | A Monk's Guide
What do you do when life gets a bit too complicated and stressful? In this video, I use the wisdom of the Buddhist monk training to talk about intentional living and going back to the basics. Many times, we suffer because we lose focus of why we do the things that we do and also the original intent with the things in our daily lives. I hope this video gives you a starting point to looking at your own life and give you some ideas on how to go back to living with intention. #monks #minimalism #intentional

I've been focusing on eating with intention and doing nothing with intention. Or lack thereof? I mean I've been trying to not mindlessly do things in order to prevent myself from being alone with myself and the present moment. Which is harder than it used to be 😊

Oh I hear you loud and clear on this one! I am physically disabled ( not wheelchair bound) and the voice of my x-husband kept whispering, “you aren’t disabled. Go out and get a job like a decent American” ( he was a cop and very controlling and emotionally abusive). So I challenged myself and went back to school to become a paralegal (I was always interested in law and I couldn’t go back to being a nurse because of my physical limitations). I go my “dream job” in a DAs office and it ended up being my job from hell. I was miserable and depressed and my health got even worse. My personality did not jive with that environment. Needless to say I was fired ( cuz I refused to quit) . It was a hard blow but I took the time after to reflect on who I was at the job and why it didn’t work and then focused on what do I want to do . Long story but I took up painting and my current husband built me an art studio and now I enjoy every day. I actually go to bed looking forward to tomorrow.

One of your previous videos in which you touched on these topics changed my life. I changed my relationship with food, now eating three times per day when I'm working as my job is physical and I cycle 16 miles to and from work and then eating twice per day when I am off as I don't require more. I was obese and struggled daily now I feel healthier and fit. My car now moves once per week as I cycle to work. My wardrobe has two sets of work clothes, two sets of home clothes and I wear on rotation. All these things have simplified my life and made my mind much healthier in the process. I studied the original Buddhist texts for two years. I am endlessly blessed to have known Buddhas teachings. It helped me to have a conscious direction for my mind. But I do believe that Buddhism is harmful in a sense that it pushes the idea that life is simply suffering and that you should leave it (with the desires that sustain it). Now I'm not a Buddhist an not interested in it but using some tools Buddha gave me is such a blessing. My message is that LIFE IS NOT SUFFERING. Life is such a bliss and when you leave the ignorance you don't suffer. You don't have to be a monk for that. Just my two cents that came spontaneously. May you be happy. Yes you who read this.

I went through severe poverty in my childhood. So it is understood that such a life was without my will and guilt. It was a very difficult period that I barely survived. An easy life can make us sluggish, unmotivated, it can make us numb, but if we keep reality in our head, then it's okay to live comfortably, in the lull of civilization. For some, poverty brings enlightenment and frees them from the excess burden created by possessions, and for some it is just an additional burden that they should not carry. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I wish you success in finding all the grace you seek and spreading it to others.

I love your explanation of telling everyone how to simplify living Nick. And I think the explanation of the intended purposes of things in life is beautiful.
I would love to share the following with you and others who might read this comment:
always think positive, have priorities, exercise is walking, cycling and running, rest when tired, listen to your body's signs, have a routine, put your spiritual life before the material world pleasures as you are only a human for about 100 years and a spiritual being forever, do what you love doing, share chores, personal hygiene, let bygones be bygones. It is a new day. Make sure your past doesn't haunt you in the present. Do not let your yesterday ruin your today. Always forgive. Don't hold grudges. Express gratitude. Life is given by God. So put your health first. Self care is very important.
Eat less, talk less, sleep less. Funnily, when you eat less, you naturally speak less. You want to preserve your energy. You also naturally sleep less. You sleep more when you eat more and you only speak a lot when your stomach is full. If you eat less, there will be fewer problems. Not to mention, when you eat less, you have to relieve yourself of waste less.
It is a proven fact that if you eat less, you are actually utilising your body and your organs less. The more you make your body work the faster the process of ageing will become.
Eat only 3 meals or 2. Never snack in between.
You should know what to eat and what not to eat.
When you eat, make sure a portion of your meal is green vegetables and green leaves. If you eat green vegetables, it will detoxify your liver. If you drink a lot of water, it will detoxify your kidneys.
When you do not eat the right food, you are actually putting your vital organs in jeopardy.
Some people cannot sleep unless their stomach is full. To go to sleep immediately after eating is literally a sin against your body.
Life is all about practice. When you are given knowledge, you need to put that knowledge into practice. If you don't do that, you will be lowering yourself in esteem, spirituality and character. According to great mystics of all religions, if you have knowledge and you don't practise it, it brings calamity upon you.
Whatever knowledge you have, you are bound to practise it. If you don't practise it, you put yourself in trouble.
n order to have a comfortable lifestyle, a peaceful lifestyle, you have to make sure that people around you are not hurt by you. Have a very healthy relationship with everybody, a relationship in which you have this principle law of give and take, forgive and forget. Support others when they need your support - and when you need their support, you don’t have to ask for it. It will come by itself.
Our happiness is not in keeping ourselves happy; rather, it is related to the happiness of other people as well.
You cannot afford to be reckless in your utterances. Speak gently. Because when you speak, what is hidden in your heart comes out through your words.
Do not discuss others. Whatever so-and-so is doing is none of my business. Why should I discuss anybody?
If you have a problem with somebody, then the right thing is to take the matter up with the concerned person.
IT is generally believed by everybody that elders are wiser. You become wise with age. Getting grey doesn't mean getting wiser but this is what people generally believe.
Accept the fact that you have made a mistake. The only way to rectify what you have done is not to repeat it. Say "I am sorry". Be determined not to do it again, but do not verbalise it. When you verbalise it, half of your determination will be gone.
    Dedicate your life to something.
There is probably much more. This is what I come up with for now. Much love. xx

good ! ... also : 1) live the present as is the only existing thing
      2) contemplate nature and yourself
      3) forgive yourself , dont be hard at yourself
      4) take weight off bad and good things... you are eternal !! nothing can change that ( unless you sell your soul ) , you will live on beyond everything...
      5) live in aligment
1 and 2 are most important and will bring happiness if understood correctly =) Being a master of those 2 , will make any moment special and memorable , stopping time , being present , breathing the moment , getting you high on your own drug, seeing gold in everything as King Salomon said =) =) =)

It seem like she was the only person in my life that I felt truly loved me, but I also realize that no one else is able to love us like our Mother. Regina sorry to hear you are feeling lonely sometimes. I know a lot people, but choose a simple quiet life. You need people who truly care and not fake people. My oldest friend and I don't talk everyday but we have some catching up sessions, but she is the kindest, most caring friend I have. There are lots of ways to make friends, but while you are making them, be clear as who you are and your boundaries. People think I have become a recluse but I am not, I just enjoy my space and quiet times. All the very best in finding genuine caring friends. ❤

Hello Regina, I have had great success making friends by volunteering. I have been a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Rotary Club and Read San Diego a literacy charity. Just smile and say hello to people and you will be surprised how that will break the ice and get a conversation going. I also made a pledge that if I’m invited somewhere I will go and finally I prayed and asked God to bring people into my life who respect and treat me well and whom I can learn from and guide me on the right path. Grief takes time to heal be gentle with yourself. 😉

Hi Ven. Nick. I have been following your videos for the past 2-3 years and I had followed your advise particularly on this topic (How to Simplify Your Life). I honestly felt happier and felt more contented in my life. But at the same time, I felt sad and depressed because of how people looked at me. When I went to the mall to get my watch fixed, the salesperson was ignoring me and looked at me as if I was a homeless person. It was spring at that time and I was wearing my hoodie and I layered it with a puffer jacket, sweatpants, and a cap. For some reason, I felt disrespected and degraded just because I wasn't stylish or conformed with society's way of clothing themselves especially if you're a lady. My question is, how can I balance intentionality with society's expectations? Thank you so much and I wish you the best.

I have managed to live rather simply, doing away with material stuff & confinement of societal norms (admittedly, sometimes I chose to loose myself and loose control for a bit). To be honest, the hardest part where I cannot establish intention is the relationship with myself.
