  • Edible fabric used in cake decorating for things such as wings for dragons, mermaid tails or draping on cakes. It is a lot lighter to work with than fondant and is more flexible as well. Today we are making bows as this trend has really picked up the last year. The idea is to have a large bow and drape the fabric over the sides covering the cake. It gives a very luxurious fabric effect.
This is usually dusted with pearl dust and a yellow tinged to the bow. Gives an 80's vibe but colour powders would work as well. This simple technique will wow your friends. Cake decorating for Beginners.

I just used water for this bow.
I have made more bows now and I made my own piping gel
it is just 1 tbsp water to 1tbsp gelatine.
heat 1 cup glucose syrup and add gelatine.
pour into jar to cool down completely.
there is corn-starch based recipes as well.
Attaching the centre is the hardest part. so the gel and skewers help hold it in place while it dries.
      Standing bow up
I also stabbed some skewers at the back to hold the middle part of the bow in place while it dried which took 1day in a humid climate.
if you want the bow to stand up I placed two skewers vertical on ends inside of the bow loops on the cake making sure they don't go above the bow. I also kept the acetate tubes in the bow loops for structure or you could use rolled up baking paper. Then attach the centre join.
I hoped this helped. ask more questions if you need.

Hi, I used water to stick the bow loops down and used skewers to hold it in place over night. The middle of the bow I made my own piping gel as glue.

    My fabric keeps on breaking

@@kellyshah1076 Hi, I made my fabric in the colder months. Is the room you are working hot. How thick is the fabric after you spread it out? I noticed when I made my fabric to thin it would break easier.
If it is the heat, after you spread it out place in the refrigerator to firm up. Then shape it and place it in the fridge to dry.
