Feel like the post-quarantine years are gonna keep on popping off. There’s just been so much market interest for anime, and the studios get more budget and advance their tech every year. Like the CG in Chainsaw man still has its iffy moments for me, but we’re starting to see a third studio approach Orange Ufotable tier with their CG character models which is pretty crazy to say And the originals keep on popping off
@@Amaling Indeed. Hopefully the anime industry would continue to thrive. I'm wishing all of the talented animators and directors are getting their money's worth.
I agree the csm anime somewhat fails to capture the mangas aesthetic, but it still has its own distinct aesthetic which is also very good. I believe theres a tradeoff, which is that I actually found myself caring about the characters a lot more. The manga does better at creating that gritty chaotic adrenaline pump, but the anime takes a bit more time with the characters and the "cleaner"aesthetic kinda brings them more to the forefront and puts more of a spotlight on their personality. All this to say that I think just bc its somewhat different from the manga I dont necessarily think its worse.
The main issue for me is that the aesthetic was a strong part of its identity so much so that changing it in the anime makes feel like its not csm. Slowing down a series that relies on being chaotic just doesn't work for me personally and their personalities are accented more in the manga cause of how over the top they are. I do agree with your last statement to a certain degree but the problem is when it changes its identity, that's when its an issue for me, especially when there was a possibility of truly highlighting the chaotic identity with an anime adaptation. This may be a hot take but i feel like this adaptation is further proof of mappas lack of ability to truly capture the identity of series. But in the end of the day if u do enjoy the adaptation, then thats good cause the point of entertainment is to be entertained
@@RamraiderEVO i would maintain that its still just a slight shift in "aesthetic". I don't find the differences significant enough to say the "identity" was changed, but even so, the argument is the same. If u like the new identity, its not a problem, so it all comes down to opinion. Its an adaptation after all, theres something to be said about adaptation being an artform in itself that allows u to explore a story in a different way, not just make a carbon copy in a different medium. As for me, i always found the csm manga very fun and exciting, but it left me pretty emotionally indifferent. With the anime's approach tho, i think it will really pay off in later seasons when a lot of the stronger more emotional character moments happen, and while i can concede its maybe less exciting than it would've been had it gotten the cracked out trigger style adaptation i know a lot of ppl wanted, its still a VERY exciting anime all things considered, and i think the tradeoff overall was worth it. I respect ur opinion tho.
Personally, I believe that the style the chainsaw man anime was going for was to highlight Fujimoto sensei's strongest point in storytelling which is melodrama, which is evident in his recent works like Look Back and Goodbye Eri. It may seem like Mappa failed in capturing the chaoticness of chainsaw man but personally, I believe they captured the melancholy of the whole story perfectly with its cinematic approach, which I think is the core essence of chainsaw man.
agree so much, the adaptation focused on the sense of realism that the manga has (the character interactions, dialogue, portrayal of deep themes and ideas), but at the same time the comedy suffers, the goofy and quirky comedy is lost in translation, at the same time the grittiness and messiness of the series is kind of lost as well because of the realism focus
The problem with shows like Call of the Night and Chainsaw Man is that you really can't capture their manga's vibe and aesthetic in anime form so they created their own unique vibe and aesthetic. I love both Call of the Night and Chainsaw Man as mangas and anime. As a manga reader, so far, Chainsaw Man has really surprised me with the level of detail, compositing and character acting during the character centered scenes. It shows that the people working on the show understand that it's not just another battle shonen where the fights are the most entertaining and important thing. Yes, the fights are bat shit crazy, even more so later in the series, but, in my opinion, the characters and how they're written vastly outshine the action.
I wholeheartedly agree. It feels like they know the anime can never be EXACTLY how you'd imagine it in the manga, so it takes the weaknesses of adaptation, and pushes more onto it to iron it out. It's like instead of trying to "fix" or "cover up" the inevitably of the cons that come with adapting it, they give us pros that can only come with it as an anime. Like the voice acting, the fight scenes, body language, and other stuff like that, that can only be in the anime. And all of this I believe is from the people who make this, understand this and *ACTUALLY GIVE A FUCK* 🥳🍾🎉✨️
Yeah and in particular trying to emulate Fujimoto's "lots of lines" style would be really, really difficult in Animation, because, like, you need to draw every line in every frame. There were some scenes in AOT season 4 (part two) where they actually did that in, like, one fight scene and it looked pretty cool, but obviously you can't keep it up. It would be cool to see CSM done in a mob psycho style style but what Mappa is doing is fine. Also with Yofukashi no Uta - the problem is always that what one person takes away as the style of the manga can be totally different for another person. Like I saw the Anime first, then read the Manga, and the Manga seemed to fit really well with the vibe of the Anime. Also the vibe of the Anime was hype as hell.

Ayanokoji is one of the worst tropey characters I've ever come across in anime. I suffered through 5 episodes of the first season (which is usually my trial time for most series) ultimately deciding that none of the character are getting any better.
@@lazy_biscuits08 bro, I went through the first 11 episodes of the first season. I got so tired of it that I decided to drop it on the last episode. I was new to anime and usually completed every anime from start to finish. It was the first series that I dropped.
Agree with most takes apart from Lycoris Recoil, thought it didn’t have much substance and I didn’t really find it enjoyable. It’s funny because I thought you said you didn’t like it in the summer anime opening ranking or something.
Tbh it got carried mostly by Chisato charisma and the "yuri" and being very solid as far as animation goes, but if I get rid of my bias here is the most 7/10 show ever.
The lite novel for Classroom of the Elite is incredibly written. The anime adaption doesn’t do it justice unfortunately. Doesn’t help that some of the fan base are young teens trying to be smart.
This year has been absolutely bonkers man. So many great shows. I can't even name them all, but the one that I will name drop is Ya Boy Kongming. It was probably the most underrated anime of the entire year and it seems like most people didn't even know about it since it was on HiDive
I was nervous how the readaptation would turn out since the OG Urusei Yatsura is one of my favorite anime, but I'm honestly impressed by how well they've been adapting it so far. The casting has been pretty on point, and the removal of Ten was a great choice. I wish they had removed Ran, too, but I guess she's involved in too many arcs for that to make much sense.
@@thehomiedamian Hell yes, same here. They fixed some of the issues that the manga had and it was joy to watch. Wait does that also mean it's in top 6 and possible anime of the year? (Also is in my top 5 of the year.)

Chainsaw man the manga has this unhinged and crazy vibe to it, but in a good way. Mappa on the other side, pays attention to cinematic elements and they are doing a splendid job so far. I miss the comedy however, it doesn't go too well with the Anime's clean style.
it's funny to me that many people are missing the comedy. to me there were quite a few scenes that made me giggle while comedy animes usually aren't my humor at all. but i didn't read the manga so i cant compare
@@soulripper4423 The anime still has some funny moments, but these moments were hilarious in the manga. It's probably because it uses the manga medium to it's advantage.
This is the first year I watched anime seasonally every season, and it's fucking exhausting, but also a lot of fun. S-Tier: Call of the Night, Kaguya-sama s3, Bocchi the Rock, Teasing Master Takagi-san s3, The Demon Girl Next Door s2 A-Tier: My Dress Up Darling, Spy x Family, Ya Boy Kongming, Lycoris Recoil, Romantic Killer, Chainsaw Man, Do It Yourself, Akiba Maid War B-Tier: Fantasy Bishoujo, Slow Loop, Princess Connect Re:Dive s2, Love After World Domination, Deaimon, Uncle from Another World, Raven of the Inner Palace, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury C-Tier: Arifureta s2, Komi-san s2, I'm Quitting Heroing, The Executioner and Her Way of Life, Aharen-san, Trapped in a Dating Sim, Vermeil in Gold, My Step-Mom's Daughter is My Ex, I'm the Villainess So I'm Taming the Final Boss, Eminence in Shadow, Iruma-kun s3 (this hurts, and I am reasonably confident it's the arc, not the production, and the show will get better again) D-Tier: The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt, Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Dept, Date a Live IV, Tomodachi Game, Skeleton Knight, The Devil is a Part-Timer s2, Engage Kiss, Bibliophile Princess, Reincarnated as a Sword, Beast Tamer F-Tier: Leadale, Science Fell in Love s2 (season finale contender for worst episode of the year, ruins ENTIRE SERIES), Shikimori is Not Just a Cutie (didn't finish, but watched over half so I gave it a chance okay?) Unfinished Tier: Summertime Render Dropped Tier: A Couple of Cuckoos, Heroines Run the Show, Sabikui Bisco (might restart though), Shield Hero s2, Urusei Yatsura (in this case not a reflection of quality, was watching too many shows) Still Plan to Watch, Hopefully: Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Vanitas Part 2, Sasaki and Miyano, Birdie Wing, Shadows House s2, Mob Psycho 100 III, Healer Girl, Kotaro Lives at Home I do not usually watch idol or sports anime without a really strong reason fwiw. hate Attack on Titan and only ever saw first season, don't care for Demon Slayer, haven't seen any of Made in Abyss or Overlord or Bleach, fell off on My Hero Academia, lol. Pretty sure I haven't missed anything else of substance.
I remember you said bein uninterested in Lycoris Recoil because it looks like your typical buddy cops drama (which I can see). Glad you eventually change your mind. No show gave me anxiety like ep9 did Seriously A1 is eating bread and left no crumb this year and already have projects slated for 2023 too
Cuckoos being a B tier was literally so accurate. Like I want it to be higher because I love the characters but dear god did it fall off, still hoping for a s2 though because the manga gets really good
I don’t really understand how people think the manga for MHA goes down hill. All my favourite moments of the entire series are now literally all in the final arc. Like, the stars and traitor stuff is super short (around 3 eps, 5 max) and then it’s the final battle and really satisfying climax after climax…pause
idk i think csm pretty perfectly captures the manga. i read csm like 3 times completely before the anime released, ive now read it like 4-5 times more since the anime came out. i think the comedy is deadpan and blunt like the manga, the atmosphere is gritty, bloody, and dark. Neon colors would have looked so shit and been 100% worse. Shits not monogatari. i think people will start appreciating it more as it continues, i think because the anime is so different and experimental in how it presents an “adaptation” that it makes viewers uncomfortable because they expect anime adaptations to be 1:1 with everything the exact same when that wouldn’t have worked with how experimental and crazy fujimoto is with writing manga. It wouldn’t have translated well into animation if it captured what he was doing stylistically, since he did stuff that was specific to manga. The anime captures that essence and adds more to it. The emotional scenes have been especially more impactful. And the messiness of the fights has been perfectly accurate even if a one or two exact panels weren’t done EXACTLY like the manga
"I think people will start appreciating it more as it continues" At least for me, it has been the opposite. Started out LOVING it, but as it continued I kept finding flaws here and there. Not too bad on their own, but they start to add up. Still think it's a great anime though. Also, neon colors would've been AWESOME for certain fights. The early chaotic ones specifically. The later fights should be more dark in color like the anime has now.
“The chainsaw man anime doesn’t capture the aesthetics of that manga!” That’s the point. If you try and have an anime adaptation have the exact same feel of the manga you’ll fail. It’s just a different form of media.
We all know Made in Abyss will win best in music XD Made in Abyss Cyberpunk Chainsaw Man will probably be the chosen for anime of the year Made in abyss is carried by its story, characters, and music cyberpunk is carried by the character and "NETFLIX", and non-anime watchers Chainsaw Man is carried by weebs whom read about it and love it so much started a cult by spreading its name, like some LoveCraftian Deity
Genius prince is actually pretty funny, otome-game has shitty animation but is pretty accurate adaption, and the mc is funny. Loved golf girls too. Shikimori is pretty bad, but the episodes about the girl who didn't get to confess were really good
This year was awesome for anime, but F in the chat for the catastrophe that was Shield Hero s2. I'm not a big fan of it but i remember it being one of the most anticipated anime sequels before it came out.
What you said about the authors obsessing over their characters and it being not exclusive, i really felt that, ReZero's author is known for having a strong fetish over Emilia lol
Liked your video just because you are the first person I came across who said classroom of the elite is bad. @@beef_file4459 kiyotaka is a amazing character
Don’t worry bro millions will still enjoy it keep bitching on TH-cam
Yeah, watched 3 episodes and dropped it, cuz I couldn't stand it for whatever reason. Also cute girls shooting guns premise is too old
It's John Wick except cute anime girls. I didn't enjoy it either but the premise is neat.
Tbh it got carried mostly by Chisato charisma and the "yuri" and being very solid as far as animation goes, but if I get rid of my bias here is the most 7/10 show ever.
Your s tier rank is perfect 👍
Perhaps end the video with a visualisation of your rankings in an actual tier list to make it more clear. Great video!
The lite novel for Classroom of the Elite is incredibly written. The anime adaption doesn’t do it justice unfortunately. Doesn’t help that some of the fan base are young teens trying to be smart.
Aint no way my boy said I care about ARIFURETA LMAOOOOOO
I mean you're the only one I know who even watched it lmao 😂
I completely agree with the CSM take. Thought I was going crazy because some people have been saying the anime is better in every way.
Eughhhh Homie Dame Shoutout??? 🔥👀
This year has been absolutely bonkers man. So many great shows. I can't even name them all, but the one that I will name drop is Ya Boy Kongming. It was probably the most underrated anime of the entire year and it seems like most people didn't even know about it since it was on HiDive
Damian have you watched Jojo’s part 6 yet?
I was nervous how the readaptation would turn out since the OG Urusei Yatsura is one of my favorite anime, but I'm honestly impressed by how well they've been adapting it so far. The casting has been pretty on point, and the removal of Ten was a great choice. I wish they had removed Ran, too, but I guess she's involved in too many arcs for that to make much sense.
I love the clickbait thumbnail, really cool damian dude
You forgot to give summer time rending a rating, it’s so good and all. I assume an A tier right? Maybe S?
You right I did forget, yea I'd put it in S tier
@@thehomiedamian Hell yes, same here. They fixed some of the issues that the manga had and it was joy to watch. Wait does that also mean it's in top 6 and possible anime of the year?
(Also is in my top 5 of the year.)
@@thehomiedamian W placement! Definitely anime of the year contender that came out of left field!
Is this video privated? I can't seem to see it in your channel, only managed to get here cause of the notification.
Yea idk it's some kind of TH-cam bug, I'm tryna figure it out 🥲
@@thehomiedamian sorry to hear it man, hopefully it at least won't stay like that
19:10 But fujimoto is insane, if he worshipped Makima, we can't blame him 😳
Holy shit I can’t wait until next years video
But yeah I’d say my picks for anime of the year are: 1) Made in Abyss, 2) Kaguya-sama, 3) Bleach
I think the next season of Chainsaw Man will be a 10/10 though if it covers up to part 2
but did you watch bocchi the rock yet
Made in abyss detected opinion accepted
Just, with the sheer volume being produced I need to be more discriminating, definitely capping next couple of seasons at no more than ten shows.
S-Tier: Call of the Night, Kaguya-sama s3, Bocchi the Rock, Teasing Master Takagi-san s3, The Demon Girl Next Door s2
A-Tier: My Dress Up Darling, Spy x Family, Ya Boy Kongming, Lycoris Recoil, Romantic Killer, Chainsaw Man, Do It Yourself, Akiba Maid War
B-Tier: Fantasy Bishoujo, Slow Loop, Princess Connect Re:Dive s2, Love After World Domination, Deaimon, Uncle from Another World, Raven of the Inner Palace, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury
C-Tier: Arifureta s2, Komi-san s2, I'm Quitting Heroing, The Executioner and Her Way of Life, Aharen-san, Trapped in a Dating Sim, Vermeil in Gold, My Step-Mom's Daughter is My Ex, I'm the Villainess So I'm Taming the Final Boss, Eminence in Shadow, Iruma-kun s3 (this hurts, and I am reasonably confident it's the arc, not the production, and the show will get better again)
D-Tier: The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt, Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Dept, Date a Live IV, Tomodachi Game, Skeleton Knight, The Devil is a Part-Timer s2, Engage Kiss, Bibliophile Princess, Reincarnated as a Sword, Beast Tamer
F-Tier: Leadale, Science Fell in Love s2 (season finale contender for worst episode of the year, ruins ENTIRE SERIES), Shikimori is Not Just a Cutie (didn't finish, but watched over half so I gave it a chance okay?)
Unfinished Tier: Summertime Render
Dropped Tier: A Couple of Cuckoos, Heroines Run the Show, Sabikui Bisco (might restart though), Shield Hero s2, Urusei Yatsura (in this case not a reflection of quality, was watching too many shows)
Still Plan to Watch, Hopefully: Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Vanitas Part 2, Sasaki and Miyano, Birdie Wing, Shadows House s2, Mob Psycho 100 III, Healer Girl, Kotaro Lives at Home
I do not usually watch idol or sports anime without a really strong reason fwiw.
hate Attack on Titan and only ever saw first season, don't care for Demon Slayer, haven't seen any of Made in Abyss or Overlord or Bleach, fell off on My Hero Academia, lol. Pretty sure I haven't missed anything else of substance.
Didn't know that Damian was one of the 10 people who watch Kingdom
Bro I was gonna complain about all your choices on anime you think is bad. But honestly it just became hilarious after awhile. 😂
Damien grew up in the 80s, I thought he was like 19
I remember you said bein uninterested in Lycoris Recoil because it looks like your typical buddy cops drama (which I can see). Glad you eventually change your mind. No show gave me anxiety like ep9 did
Seriously A1 is eating bread and left no crumb this year and already have projects slated for 2023 too
i never said I was uninterested in it BECAUSE it felt like a buddy cop film. If anything that was a bonus.
@@thehomiedamian ah sorry, i must have remembered it wrongly then
I subscribed because I fucks with your commentarye
Cuckoos being a B tier was literally so accurate. Like I want it to be higher because I love the characters but dear god did it fall off, still hoping for a s2 though because the manga gets really good
Homie Damian
BOCCHISWEEP
You earned my like just by talking up made in abyss
finally someone who has the same opinion on classroom of the elite as me
last half of summertime render was difficult to watch ngl that shit reeked
I was kicked from the hero party so now I stream Overwatch
Damn Damian
I don’t really understand how people think the manga for MHA goes down hill. All my favourite moments of the entire series are now literally all in the final arc.
Like, the stars and traitor stuff is super short (around 3 eps, 5 max) and then it’s the final battle and really satisfying climax after climax…pause
Missed Do It Yourself, Yama no Susume S4 and Akiba Maid War.
you know what, if Fujimoto said that Judah from Fire Punch or Power or some shit was his girlfriend, i would say he's a genius, cuz he is
idk i think csm pretty perfectly captures the manga. i read csm like 3 times completely before the anime released, ive now read it like 4-5 times more since the anime came out. i think the comedy is deadpan and blunt like the manga, the atmosphere is gritty, bloody, and dark.
The later fights should be more dark in color like the anime has now.
top 5 2022 anime:
1. bleach tybw
2. blue lock
3. demon slayer s2/cote s2
4. aot s4 p2
5. mob s3/spy x s2
Top 5 anime I recently watched
also you should watch the tatami galaxy sequel if you haven’t 🙏
Yuuichi from tomodachi game should definitely be nominated as one of the best protagonist of the year
“The chainsaw man anime doesn’t capture the aesthetics of that manga!” That’s the point. If you try and have an anime adaptation have the exact same feel of the manga you’ll fail. It’s just a different form of media.
High quality year. Each year I pray for more plot diversity outside of isekai. 2022 was again not my year. Maybe 2023.
???
Everyone just forgot that Ranking of kings four 2 was this year, the real AOTY
We all know Made in Abyss will win best in music
XD
Made in Abyss
Cyberpunk
Chainsaw Man
will probably be the chosen for anime of the year
Made in abyss is carried by its story, characters, and music
cyberpunk is carried by the character and "NETFLIX", and non-anime watchers
Chainsaw Man is carried by weebs whom read about it and love it so much started a cult by spreading its name, like some LoveCraftian Deity
Bro you forgot to rate Kotaro Lives Alone, that show slept on
7:18
so what tier is it? B or A or S
When stone ocean batch 2 and 3 reaction
Kaguya-sama S3 was definetly the best anime of this year
but still didn't get nominated for Crunchyroll AOTY award, instead we got AOT, Demonslayer, etc hahaha like, its a joke
@@FireDragg I don't even care about Crunchyroll awards anymore, they completely destroyed their image
I agree with your Top 5 for the year. You took me out with To Your Eternity though. D tier?! And More than a Married Couple got C?! C'mon... lol
Based, Lycoreco and Bocchi the Rock is fire
Genius prince is actually pretty funny, otome-game has shitty animation but is pretty accurate adaption, and the mc is funny.
Loved golf girls too.
Shikimori is pretty bad, but the episodes about the girl who didn't get to confess were really good
Ok so you didnt talked about Akiba Maid Sensou, and I just want to know whats your goddam problem man? Your going to LOVE that show
How old is this dude, grew up on anime in the 80s ?
I did not think Rebecca was in love with David at all in Edgerunners
This year was awesome for anime, but F in the chat for the catastrophe that was Shield Hero s2. I'm not a big fan of it but i remember it being one of the most anticipated anime sequels before it came out.
Agree with your opinion on Call of the Nigh & CSM. fax
Internets busiest anime nerd
it is once again time to update my mal ratings in accordance with the objective truth
Heike monogatari didn't come out this year. It released last year but it aired on TV this year
surprised you havent gotten on renai flops yet think you'd have a lot to say abt it
I did not expect Bocchi the Rock to be that freakin' good. 10/10 show
14:59 why you clarifying as if anyone would disagree with that take😭 ln readers was tearing s2 apart when it was airing
Big W for calling people out on their weird outdated gendered relationship dynamics views
Yes someone who hates COTE! Most overrated series this year
The manga for To Your Eternity was much more thougtful than that the anime for sure
LN were most excited at the end they were most disappointed, anime kiyo edgy with funny animation
man gave uncle from another world and call of the night c and b tier.. im fuming
NAAAAAH To Your Eternity is heat bro it does not deserve a D-tier rating
Yesss COTE DOES deserve more hate.
That show sucks.
What you said about the authors obsessing over their characters and it being not exclusive, i really felt that, ReZero's author is known for having a strong fetish over Emilia lol
Liked your video just because you are the first person I came across who said classroom of the elite is bad. I watched it's first season 2yrs ago and I didn't like it at all and when season 2 got announced and saw the hype I went back and read the manga for season 1 then watched season 2 and still didn't like it. Rather I hated it more
I was thinkin to mysel dammn the first normal anime influencer untill i hear u watched that boy love shi😭😭
Eiko IS best girl and I am sad that not enough channels were covering Kongming, it was genuinely a great ride
LOl dude, it's the purest motivating factor for Rebecca, don't hate it. Unless you're a Rebecca simp LOL
Damian is the single REASON people watch Spy X Family
> EVERY anime of 2022
> Didn't even mention Fuuto PI
What no Akiba Maids war?!
My boi has a good taste in realizing the strength of Gundam: Witch from Mercury 👍
