Great vid as usual. Bocchi was definitely one of my most hyped animes for this season since it was CloverWorks (CloverWorks has gone hard this year as you mentioned) and music. It blew all my expectations tho, never expected it to be my anime of the year.
just to clear it up almost nothing in the live performances is 3D or 3D assisted. A few of the shorter cuts that show all of them have some auto-inbetween work but even the instruments which are normally the 3D assets are all traditionally animated, there is plenty of cells and early animation cuts on sakugabooru.
Kita does actually sing much worse in the first performance in episode 8. There are many times where her singing is out of tune, sings ahead of the instruments and her voice cracks once as well. That was one of the reasons I really loved that episode, I could tell it was noticebly bad and was cringing where I meant to, all as a lead up to that hype Bocchi solo.
16:33 it was their first performance and basically nobody knew them. at that point there are no "vibes" because most of the people there arent there to hear them, hard to get people to overlook your mistakes when they dont even know ur music or u as an artist
So about the music performances, the way they've done them, is they have actual players perform them, this part falls a lot under Sony/Aniplex part, what they do is they give constant feedback and instructions and context on what is going on, making it so it flows more naturally, for the time they fuck up in ep 8, they did actually record again the song, you can even notice due to kita's voice being different and feel teh tension in it, they put a ton of care on it and for how they animated these, what they did is they rotoscoped them, but then process and draw over them manually, using stretch and squach and smearing so it looks more smoother at the time, there is also interviews in a sakuga blogsite where part of the staff and most involved people answer questions and give insights in how they operate, etc, its a really good read and plenty informative, so check that out too if you can

One thing that will always get me hooked in a comedy anime is if the face game is on point, and the face game in Bocchi the Rock is unparalleled. Mostly Bocchi, but occasionally one of the other band members. Like in the most recent episode Ryo's gobbling omurice and they made her look exceptionally silly doing it. Also, even though Bocchi gets the lion's share of focus, the other girls have a lot of depth. Ryo is Ryo, completely and totally a type of person, but every so often there's a new bit added to the Ryo experience, like the revelation that she's book dumb, or when she absolutely rocks a butler outfit. Kita's is that she responds to anxiety by throwing herself into everything, frequently courting disaster, and she's absolutely, completely faking her confidence to try to bluff her way through. And her relationship with Bocchi shows one of Bocchi's hidden strengths - while she lacks social confidence, she KNOWS she's got the guitar skills. When she focuses on that, rather than worrying about the crowd, her value to the band becomes apparent. Also Kita Aura has turned into a pretty funny running gag. And Nijika is the band leader, and in a lot of circumstances the sanest one, and the most practical, but it wears on her. She LOOKS like she'd be the outgoing type with a lot of friends, like Kita, but that's not true at all. And she's an interesting contrast to Bocchi, who is gloomy despite a supportive family, while Nijika has only had her sister. And she has to live with knowing her sister gave up on playing music for her sake. She seems strong, but she can only take so much. Which is why she sort of loses control on their first song, during the storm. That conversation at the end of that episode is actually what cemented Bocchi the Rock as anime of the year. At least 50% because Nijika literally said the title.

I can relate to Bocchi a lot with stuttering, autism, anxiety, introvertedness and messed up head/mental health issues (combined with the randomness of Ryo) and if i ever have to explain to someone what anxiety attacks are like i would show then the "Bocchi glitch" scene among others. Also Ryo is a goddess of Drip/Fashion
I like em all but Bocchi is the fav, she just like me fr. You didn't bring it up but man her solo intro to the second song was fire, and the references feel pretty inspired and unintrusive, and definitely funny in their own right (there's a friggin undertale reference in there that you'd have to have followed the trailers to get).

I actually like that they choose to make the wrong playing only slightly. Because if you make it too obvious it would be unrealistic. I think someone said that the music section is the most realistic section, contradicting the hyper-crazy jokes they make. Remember when Nijika said the high schooler can't tell the difference between good and bad performance? imagine you're the 1-2 guy who noticed that they are playing bad, or in this case, people who come only the band that they care about, so if you aren't performing well to make them interested, god knows who's willing to listen

That part where they "fucked up" their was funny as hell. My first gig our vocalist apparently tripped over my cable during the first song. I only noticed that I wasn't connected to the amp after our second song. Our drummer was also out of time with the kick because we just yanked him from the school marching band. Our first gig was basically our vocalist and lead guitarist who were great, a rhythm guitarist who hid his untuned, no pre-amp-having ass with baseless arrogance (his lack of shame boosted our confidence to keep playing though), an unplugged bassist who was a nervous wreck and a drummer who was, at least, enthusiastic. Now that's how you fuck up.
The fact that in both of Kessoku band's live performances they make mistakes is such a tight detail. Like every high school band I've watched or played with.
Lol when you said Kita's singing on the first ep 8 performance was perfect but in the clip you showed she literally rushed along the drums. Also as a drummer, drums going out of tempo affects the tempo for literally the whole band, and if you mess up badly you can cause the other people to mess up too. (yup I have messed up THAT badly)

I honestly don't understand the CloverWorks bashing. I'd argue that they are one of the better studios in the industry. Just because they produced a few subpar shows like season 2 of The Promised Neverland, that disappointed the fanbase, doesn't make the studio become immediately trash tier. Even the best studios will eventually produce and release a dud. Bunny Girl Senpai, Horimiya and Shadows House were incredible shows, and in just the past 12 months with My Dress Up Darling, Spy Family and Bocchi the Rock, their stock is definitely on the rise and should/will continue to rise. They're not at the level of Kyoto Animation, MAPPA or Studio Trigger, but to call them trash is just ignorant. The real trash tier studios are Maho Film, Liden Films or the whatever studio that Crunchyroll have attempted to assemble during their "Crunchyroll Originals" phase.

The fact that in Bocchi's mind she's able to hyper fixate on minor problems is COMPLETELY in line with her character. And as you noted, concert audiences might not even pick up on these things, or care. But Bocchi does. Because that's her character. Having a music background, and social anxiety myself, I felt like those aspects of the show were consistently handled incredibly well.

Bocchi the Rock is peak anime, if JoJo Stone Ocean Part wasn't released also this season, Bocchi would be my favorite. But it's still a very funny show, which is not afraid to get dark about real stuff at times. So to answer your question about Cloverworks(and A1 Picture), well they actually are a really good studio that actually capable of creating masterpieces BUT, Cloverworks just like their Big bro studio (A1 Picture) they also capable of creating garbage, so yeah when you realise an anime is being done by these two studio make sure you pay close attention to that anime because it can be a nine out of ten anime or a solid five out of ten anime. Oh yeah, Solo Leveling fans you guys better start praying for that upcoming adaptation because it A1 lol, tbh tho animation wise A1 can handle it but the writing on the other hand.....I know that Solo Leveling story is not that complicated but after being a fan of A1 for 10 year's+ now trust me when I say this, THEY CAN STILL FUCK IT UP! so yeah prepare for the worse folks..
Idk what you mean, A-1 has been producing bangers after bangers. 2 of the 3 best adaptations of all time imo are Love is war, Mushoku tensai and 86. 2/3 of them are made by A-1. Magi and sao has incredible animations. Lycoreco was pretty good. And A-1 is on their way to make Neir automata, Mashle and solo leveling, ezily 3 of the most hyped anime coming next year, all 3 made by A-1. I do not think there is a better studio than A-1 to adapt solo leveling.
Like I said animation is not something that you need to worry about when it comes to A1 because they're amazing at it, but the writing on the other hand is something that you need to worry about, Blue exorcist,Aldnoah Zero, Persona 5 anime and Fate Apocrypha is the prime example of this, those anime could've been a really great anime but because of the writing they just end up being just an ok anime, also one of the biggest rumor about the solo levelling adaptation is that the story is going to get rush, because in one of the leaked characters design the character is wearing an outfit that's not meant for the beginning of the story, so my point is keep your expectations low for the story/writing but you don't need to worry about the animation that it. Oh yeah one more thing Studio Bind did Mushouku Tensei not A1

So to answer your question about Cloverworks(and A1 Picture), well they actually are a really good studio that actually capable of creating masterpieces BUT, Cloverworks just like their Big bro studio (A1 Picture) they also capable of creating garbage, so yeah when you realise an anime is being done by these two studio make sure you pay close attention to that anime because it can be a nine out of ten anime or a solid five out of ten anime. Oh yeah, Solo Leveling fans you guys better start praying for that upcoming adaptation because it A1 lol, tbh tho animation wise A1 can handle it but the writing on the other hand.....I know that Solo Leveling story is not that complicated but after being a fan of A1 for 10 year's+ now trust me when I say this, THEY CAN STILL FUCK IT UP! so yeah prepare for the worse folks..
Idk what you mean, A-1 has been producing bangers after bangers. 2 of the 3 best adaptations of all time imo are Love is war, Mushoku tensai and 86. 2/3 of them are made by A-1. Magi and sao has incredible animations. Lycoreco was pretty good. And A-1 is on their way to make Neir automata, Mashle and solo leveling, ezily 3 of the most hyped anime coming next year, all 3 made by A-1. I do not think there is a better studio than A-1 to adapt solo leveling.
Like I said animation is not something that you need to worry about when it comes to A1 because they're amazing at it, but the writing on the other hand is something that you need to worry about, Blue exorcist,Aldnoah Zero, Persona 5 anime and Fate Apocrypha is the prime example of this, those anime could've been a really great anime but because of the writing they just end up being just an ok anime, also one of the biggest rumor about the solo levelling adaptation is that the story is going to get rush, because in one of the leaked characters design the character is wearing an outfit that's not meant for the beginning of the story, so my point is keep your expectations low for the story/writing but you don't need to worry about the animation that it. Oh yeah one more thing Studio Bind did Mushouku Tensei not A1

@@nanotsuki i would probably say that for cloverworks but not A-1. Tbf i would personally have Solo leveling animated by A-1 rather than ufotable or mappa or kyoani or anything else.Sure, all those studios have better animations, but a good adaptation is much more than that which A-1 shows.
