What a spectacular finale! So great to see our amazing onboard host Darren in there and the views through the Canadian Rockies were breathtaking! It was such a pleasure having you onboard and being able to celebrate your Dad's 75th birthday together on Rocky Mountaineer was truly special.

The Rocky Mountaineer was on my parents bucket list. However after my mom’s passing in 2013, I was still intent on taking my dad for his birthday. Unfortunately we lost him tragically in 2020. Still on my to-do list but sad that they never got to experience it. Life is short. So glad that you took your dad @DownieLive

Did you know that this route almost never happened? That’s right. It came about due to one person stubbornness.
At first the kicking horse pass was a 6 1/2% grade. East bound trains made it up but the problem was the westbound train. Only one out of every 3 trains made it down without a disaster derailing. It got bad enough that the Canadian government abandoned the project. However one guy brought the land and higher his own crew. He said why not go inside the mountain. And the spiral tunnels were built.
Here’s the hidden part of the story. Canada had given up on that pass and was routing it through usa. So to prove a route he tried to take a cargo train but was caught. I got to the point were it was delaying the trains big time so a challenge happened. He was given an oil train while another train without oil cars. First one to Vancouver wins and become the main line. To the engineer of the no oil train was behind the person. The oil train arrive just 3 minutes before the other train. There was a race back to calegry and yet this time the person was there 10 minutes ahead.

When my dad retired I took him to Europe to visit the homeland in Germany and the Netherlands. We spent 10 days traveling together. My father passed away in 2000. Our trip still is one of the best times I’ve ever had with my dad.I will remember our trip forever. Watching this trip on the train was wonderful to see his son and father traveling together.

In July and August 1981, my family travelled to Canada for a holiday of a lifetime, and we took the CP rail from Lake Louise to Vancouver, over the newly relaid tracks at Camloops. Back then, the train had barn door type doors, where the upper and lower halves could be opened separately, to allow for the upper half of the door to be open, to allow for unrestricted views out of the train; my dad, a life-long train nut - I mean enthusiast! - spent most of his two days on the train on that 'platform', taking photos, and enjoying the view. I have fond memories of the holiday, and I'm sure that you and your dad will have similar memories from the Rocky Mountaineer journey - thanks for the vid, it brought back some wonderful memories :)

I had never heard of the spiral tunnels, holy wow what a feat of genius engineering. I love the train, it's my favorite way to travel, and back in the early-mid 90s I took economy (I can only ever afford the cheap seats lol) from Stockton, California to New Orleans, Louisiana, via Chicago, Illinois because a more direct route was a hundred bucks more. It took something like 5 days. We went through the Rockies as well, and it was magical to see things no driver or plane passenger would ever see. Now the Rocky Mountaineer has become my dream train ride that I can in no way ever afford hahahaha

In about 1978, I took the Canadian Pacific (CP) passenger train from Toronto to Vancouver, stopping at the Banff station to stay a few nights at Chateau Lake Louise. This was before the Chateau added a couple wings and removed the staff cafeteria, which is where I spent a lot of my time. Back then a room on the back side of the Chateau was $65, luxury for someone making $8-$10/hr. Unfortunately, I don't believe you'll be able to follow the exact train route I took from Toronto to Banff since CP has terminated passenger service. The Rocky Mountaineer uses the CP rails so the ride from Banff to Vancouver, BC, is something I should have seen back then. Since I got a roomette, I was able to use the observation car at the end of the train with its wrap around windows. This also had the bar but we weren't allowed to play any kind of card game there so a couple of us played in my roomette, which was very tight. One of the train attendants let us stand between the cars while going through the part of the Rockies in this video. The train didn't have the kind of viewing area your train now has, we literally stood between two cars and the views were absolutely amazing. The first leg of my trip was boring, flat land which we did through the night. Once we came close to Calgary, we got to see the Canadian Rockies and the true adventure began. I don't remember the spiral tunnels but it was a long time ago. Right now they're having a 50% discount so "only" $825 one-way. I'm guessing my complete trip from Toronto-Banff and Banff-Vancouver was maybe $200 tops, meals extra?? I wouldn't mind taking this part of the trip again, this part of Canada is truly magnificent.
Downie, have a fun journey across Canada. There's so much to see.
disclaimer: I live across the border from Vancouver, BC, so it wouldn't be that difficult to get to the train station. I know what this part of the world looks like and I really enjoy it.

Watching both videos was truly lovely. The relationship with you and your dad is brilliant. Love how you two bounce off each other and your dads wise words are brilliant also. “Just keep doing it”. I’m sure Nike might be thinking something along those lines… lol
My wife and I love your videos. And I have to say thank you as it gives us both a first person idea of some brilliant places and things to do as we site in the U.K. waiting for the pandemic to be over.
Merry Christmas and please keep doing what your doing.
Happy birthday to your dad too.
    Many thanks
    James
