I always wonder if the employees would enjoy that, personally whilst working in customer service, if someone uses my name I would feel uncomfortable. But retail wasn’t a luxurious job, so maybe it’s different for them then for me. Although I get it, and it comes across as being nice and personal and showing more gratitude, would people prefer that detachment, or does it make the job feel easier as it’s not only just a job, it’s personal.
When my parents and I immigrated from Taiwan to Canada in 1992, I accompanied them on the VIA train from Vancouver to Toronto in 1996. We took the sleeper class. The three-day and three-night journey made us unforgettable, and the beautiful scenery along the way. The delicious food is constantly being served and then I have the opportunity to listen to my father's experience of fighting the Japanese in China during the world war ll. Such a thrilling experience was very peculiar through him. Then I knew how he survived. This video reminds me of my father. Although he passed away in 2010, l still miss him so much. You are a lucky man to take trips with your dad. The experience of having your dad with you is far more valuable than the luxury train experience. I wish I had similar experiences. I wish you both many more happy father-son trips together.
Had to stop the video for a while after you passed through Lynton.....As an Australian, destroyed towns are something Ive seen far too often in my 53 years, for us the risk of bush fire is a normal part of our summers as is extreme heat......but my heart breaks for people who had such little warning and so little foreknowledge of what extreme temperatures can do. Im so very glad that most of the town managed to evacuate, as long as those you love are by your side, you can survive anything. I hope this beautiful little town rebuilds as so many little Aussie towns have over the years. May they come back stronger and more resilient and more in love with the gorgeous location that they are privileged to call home. As always Mike, your videos manage to take your viewers to the heart, not just the fun stuff but also the more serious side of life but all with grace and humour.
@@canadafirstdog9051 What absolute rubbish. You have zero idea about the nazis if you seriously think that the Australian govt is anything like that. Grow up
My dad passed almost 6 years ago and seeing stories like this bring back so many memories. He was always my traveling companion. My "plus one". He and I did things together that no one else in my life would do, like going to the opera or the symphony. You're very smart to realize time is fleeting and you should seize every moment possible with those you love. I envy you. More than I can say. You're a lucky man. Be well!
I had a smile on my face during that whole outside scene with that little "race" hahaha. Watching you having fun like that is next best thing to experiencing it personally. The chances of me going is very slim, not likely at all, but seeing other people enjoying it makes me just as happy. I could feel your elation. Thank you for sharing this special experience.
I love that you travel with your parents. Adult children seem to forget the value of spending time with their parents. It's priceless. Especially adventures like this. It looked like such fun.
I hope they're gonna give you something for making this video - you did what years and years of their ads couldn't do and excite me enough to want to book a trip on this train! Well well done on this video!!
We did this iconic train trip with my sister and brother in law ten years ago for our 40th wedding anniversary! They gifted us with an unforgettable experience! The service and especially the meals and snacks were top notch! They served us on the day of our anniversary the most delicious wine I have ever tasted! Your vlog brought back so many wonderful memories of that special time in our lives! Thank you!
We live in a time where everything is about speed. How to get from A to B in the quickest, shortest way possible. Which is very sad. This train trip looks amazing, i really wish there was a lot more like this in the world. It's like a cruiseship on land, a place where you get to experience all sorts of amazing views and even get to talk to new people. We need more of this sort of thing in the world.
I was smiling non-stop with a lump in my throat throughout the video. You and your dad’s positive outlook and friendliness is something to admire. This is now on my bucket list!
Oh what a cherished memory with your father!! What an amazing gift!! My dad passed before his 71st birthday this would have been amazingly awesome to do with my dad
I worked for Amtrak 9+ years. I loved train travel and took advantage quite often. I have always wanted to go on the Rocky Mountaineer. I haven’t had the chance yet, but I am not giving up on it! Happy Birthday to your dad! You are so blessed to still have him. This video rated Excellent!
The best part was the conversations between you and your dad. I lost my dad when I was 17 but I am sure he would have loved to do something like this with me. God bless!
For those who aren't local, there was massive flooding near Vancouver which washed out tracks on all rail lines. I believe they were scheduled to re-open today.
Loved how this video was put together! So much energy and really showcased how cool this experience is. So much so that I want to do this really bad now haha
Your such a kind and enthusiastic person. I know plenty of people who wouldn’t even dare to eat lunch with total strangers like that- seriously, you have a big heart. It’s very, very sweet of you to share the experience with your father and others around you.
What an awesome trip with your dad. I'm in my 70's. My mom grew up in a Ukrainian town, Wostek Alberta. Her family moved to Vancouver, After the war, she met my father an American. They married & lived in St Louis Mo. My father was an Inspector for the Pullman Co which was the sleeping car company. Every summer, my mom, brother & I traveled to Edmonton, Alberta where my grandparents lived. From St Louis we went to Chicago, then Minneapolis/St Paul. then to Winnipeg where we boarded the CN. We traveled across Canada to Edmonton. I loved it. This trip on the Rocky Mountaineer is amazing & brought back a lot of memories. Much more luxurious than the CN in the 50's & 60's.
The fact that they tie meals in with surroundings is actually so incredible. That’s super cool and that in itself makes me really want to experience this.
Loved your dads comment about being in the picture. Have lived in Lakewood, Colorado for the better part of 50 years, about 5 miles from the Red Rocks Amphitheater. You used to be able to drive over the hogback, now Dinosaur Ridge, and at the top the entire park would come into view and it was like an amazing postcard. That was our feeling, that we were driving into the postcard. Keep making memories.
My mom made the trip back in 1959 when she lived in Vancouver for a year, working as a nurse. When we were in Banff in 1996, still the band was playing on the station and it brought tears to her eyes to see that after all those years. Can't wait to experience it for myself some day.
The way your surprised gift is for dad I really appreciate and your energy and speech is too good such a nice gift for your dad. God bless your dad. He is lucky that he has like this son. Thank you very much.🙏👍🏼
One of the best experiences you will ever have on a train. We did the journey a year or so ago from Jasper to Vancouver and there are two things I would advise. Go gold class as the views are so much better and you have a proper restaurant. The 2nd thing is don’t wait book it now, as if the logging laws remain the same, the tees will grow so much near the track that there will be no view from the viewing platform and a restricted view from upstairs. Still a fantastic experience.
This trip was everything! Thanks for taking us along. I am so thrilled that you were able to spend this time in this way with your Dad. My dad would have loved a trip like this.
That is so nice that you leveraged your work you've done on TH-cam to give your dad such a great trip. It's also nice to see the trip from the PoV of two different generations as well. Everyone wins.
What a wonderful vlog. The joy on your dad's face and his enthusiasm were an absolute pleasure to watch. The views were gorgeous and you gave so much fantastic information. Thank you. I hope you and your dad indeed had a fantastic voyage.
Gosh... What an absolutely wonderful train experience... It looks phenomenal! But, as highlighted, the fact you are doing this with your dad... Absolutely love this. I lost my dad just over 2 years ago, and if I am honest, I may have cried once or twice through this, seeing the beautiful relationship you have with your dad, and wishing I could have just one more day with mine. So much I wanted to do with him, things just like this, but never got the time when he retired. Make the absolute most of time with family, just like this video. Thank you ❤️
50 years ago my friend and I went out west from Moncton NB to Banff. The most amazing trip I wish I could do it again. You are so blessed to share that with your dad is priceless.
This is so sweet! My dad loved trains..and he would've been 75 this month like your dad! I wish I could've taken a train trip with him before he passed away. Good for you taking your dad on this trip!
We are survivors of the 2018 Camp Fire near Paradise CA. When we heard about the fire in Lytton we really felt for them. It will be years before our community is rebuilt, possibly decades in our little rural community. I pray that Canada is better at supporting disaster survivors than our country is.
I’m thankful I took a Via Rail trip from Vancouver to Montreal back in 1978. It was a school trip. Very exciting to see the incredible geography of our country. Of course we did the whole thing in coach class and slept in our seats but we did get to enjoy the dining experience. I doubt we’ll ever do the Rocky Mountaineer though. Back in its very early days, my husband, at different times, was both the conductor and engineer. They used to deliver beautiful meals to the train crew, they could choose anything on the menu and it was delivered and presented as if they were guests. As he’s still an engineer nearing retirement, the last thing he wants to do is go on any kind of train holiday! I’m thrilled that you and your Dad got to truly enjoy this incredible experience together.
your comment, particuarly the part about your husband being an employee and still being treated like a guest, made me think starkly about how differently industries will treat their essential components (the people doing the work). I'm very happy to hear he was treated with respect.
@@EdwardMcClung the Rocky has its own engineers and conductors now but that wasn’t always the case. Depending on where the crew change happened it would’ve been either CP or CN employees. They definitely treated them very, very well and it was very much appreciated. Now the Rocky has their own train crews who are very likely retired (55+) with years of experience. They’re usually very professional, excellent at their craft and ultimately endeavour to give the smoothest, safest trip on the rails so everyone enjoys themselves. And I’m sure that the crew attending the passengers is equally professional and skilled in the highest quality of customer service. The scenery is magnificent and you’ll see things that the vast majority of people will never see. The wildlife is spectacular, untamed and in their natural environment. I don’t think you’d be unhappy if you took this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
We did this exact trip 4 years ago and your vlog brought back some beautiful memories. We went at the same time of year, and had some very hot weather around Kamloops, and also there was less water in the river. So sad to see the town of Lytton in that terrible state. Unfortunately this happens to some of our towns in Australia from time to time - devastating. I’m looking forward to your next instalment, and the beautiful mountains you would have seen the next day. Enjoy this special trip with your Dad, one day you will really treasure the memories you are making 🙂
Mike, my husband Dan and I are so glad you enjoyed this trip with your Dad. Our dads are both gone, and we wish we could take a trip like that with them. Enjoy the time with him as often as you can!
You’re blessed to be able to spend this time with your Dad. It’s awesome you show your appreciation. My dad raised my 4 brothers and me by himself. We lost him to cancer at the age of 53. He is still my hero and I miss our talks.
I really love that you took your dad. There’s something special about time spent with love ones. Love riding on trains. I would love to do this one day too.
I was so moved (to tears) seeing you spend such wonderful experiences with your father. I would love to have this experience with my son's. God bless you!
The train race was exhilarating! In fact this whole trip is. Interesting to see a modern luxury train when many are done up in a past era. Day trip only with hotels at night is a brilliant idea.
The Train started the fire in Lynton A wheel on a car was stuck and fire was shooting from it as the Train went though the town Yeah it was a dry summer and that didn't help But to blame (Climet Change) for something the Train did is dumb
Trains rock💪Mr grandfather spent his whole life as a station manager. He. Fought in WW1 and still came back to the rails. God bless the people that have become before us🙏🙏
The moment when you find it odd that someone asks the question "when did you take a train for the first time in your life" as if it's something like flying, that's when you realize how cool it is to live in a country where travelling by rail is such a trivial everyday thing...
I appreciate your comment. Not counting NYC & Boston (!) subways, I can count on one hand the times I have travelled by rail. Therefore, I recall parts of all of those trips: before our son was born, we travelled extensively by private train cars with a theatrical production throughout Scandinavia; 2 more trips with my son; and, 1 with him & his granddad. Because it was out of the ordinary for me, I recall rail travel in Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, London, the Netherlands, Paris, and, Munich - and, bicycles! There are very limited rail systems where I live now. I have no doubt the automobile industry discouraged the development of extensive rail service in the States. Someday, I think I’d like a rail trip through Bavaria & the Swiss Alps, and, on what’s left of The Orient Express.
That's so true. I take the train to work every morning and on the weekends I oftentimes do longer trips by train to visit family and friends. Of course those trips are way less nice, but it's just normal to take the train
Growing up in Florida, it's certainly a different experience when trains become so readily available. When I worked in Baltimore, I remember getting off of work early on 4th of July and just casually hopped on a train within an hour to go celebrate in Washington DC.
Even when you are not talking to your dad, I can see the happiness and love in your eyes and smile....he is a lucky man to have a son that enjoys his company as well as being so proud to be with him 😊
We took the via rail “Canadian” trip a few years back. Never thought we would love it as much as we did. Even though we live in Kamloops we boarded in Vancouver for the full experience. Sadly the Canadian does not stop and we missed most of the Rockies to nightfall. I think this would be a great trip to see all the highlights! That being said, sleeping on the train, in our sleeper room for two, was so much fun…. This is certainly on the bucket list, thanks!
There can be 1000s of videos on TH-cam about Rocky Mountaineer. But this video is the best and will remain the best. It has fun, it has action, it has comedy, it has emotions, it has adventure and it has everything. That's why this video will always be the best of yours too...
Your dad may take over your channel Mike, he is a natural 😉👍 You all were great together, and as a mother of 30 year old children, I know your time together was the greatest gift for him! I hope to travel from Texas to ride on the Mountaineer this summer. Thanks for the video.
I was thinking the same thing lol. His dad is so quick witted and has TONS of charisma. He's just fun to watch. He's 25 years older than me, and his mind is sharp as a tack
Did this trip in Gold Leaf a few years ago in the older cars. We spent 2 days in Vancouver, boarded the train for the 2 day trip & then spent 2 days in Banff & took a shuttle down to Calgary where we spent another 2 days before flying back home. The service & food on the Rocky Mountaineer were exemplary & the scenery was phenomenal. Seeing this video makes me want to do this trip again.
I am so moved that you spent the time with your father on his birthday. August 19th was my father’s birthday, but all I could do is say to my self, “Happy Birthday Papa, I love you”. My father passed away February 19, 2021. So spend more time with your family and your parents, because life is too short to live a busy life that you often would forget that there is more to live in life, even in such a short time. Love, Live and Laugh. Live life like there’s no tomorrow.., cheers, God bless and take care.
Absolutely Agree. Would loved to have been born in the 40 and 50s when air travel was a pleasure not like now. Air travel is just awful now except if you can afford 1st class.
I wish we saw that more in airlines as well, outside of first class or when the cabin crew really likes you you don't get it ever. But we have to blame us, the consumers. For too long people have chosen their flights with only one thing in mind: the price. If everyone starts to choose the better airline for a 6 hour flight again and pays a bit more, the market will adapt in no time.
Sometimes... we don't realize how important those moments with our parents are... Mom Dad i miss u, can't wait to see you... Blessed we are for these moments

I took my family to Vancouver and your videos were so helpful in my being able to plan the days outings (eg. being able to buy a day pass for transit & taking the seabus to Longsdale Quay to have lunch!). My kids had the best day.
This is so incredibly awesome, on so many levels. I lost my Dad in 2002. Coming up on 20 years without him. I'd advise you to cherish all the time with your folks that you can, but it's obvious that you are already doing that. It's very touching to see you experience this together. All of that aside, I love the video for it's production quality, not to mention the freight train race which I've never seen anything like before. Very exciting and informative. Cheers!

I love watching train documentaries! I avoided the Rocky Mountain train like the plague and never looked to see what the excitement was about. I knew the first CEO, Mark Andrew from the Hyatt Regency Vancouver, where he started as a dishwasher at 15 years, in North Carolina. When he interviewed me for the Employment Manager position, and then offered me the job, I could not have been more impressed with this rising Star. After a while I noticed things. Differences in pay for the female management, expectation she not go home to her children, ever. Work work work or you are not as good as a man. A young man from Europe graduated from a famous chef's college. He had long tied back hair and was perfect for my team in the kitchen. We would offer him a sous chef position with opportunity to grow with the company. I adored this man's attitude and ambition, an knew he would be an asset to the Hyatt Regency Vancouver. Another great find of treasure, on my part. Mark said he must cut his hair short before hire. And wear a tie. Mark said I must always wear a skirt. And never argue lest I never get another HR job again. So, if you pardon me, I will just drop this here and say, Good luck Canada. May all of the Truth be shown to you with love of humanity. Not just the the image of man. It is no good if the insides are rotten. 🤕🤑🤐
The fact that you did this trip with your dad is far more valuable than the trip itself, I wish I was able to have a similar experience with my dad

For us in California, yhe most recent was the Paradise fire.
Unfortunately Lytton was also affected by recent flooding, as was a large portion of BC.

Nice dear
Yes...living thru you alls adventures....
I love that you travel with your parents. Adult children seem to forget the value of spending time with their parents. It's priceless. Especially adventures like this. It looked like such fun.
Your dad is so cool! The most 'un-doddery' 75 year old ever! What a great relationship you both have - treasure it. Loved the scenery too, thank you!
Yep
I hope they're gonna give you something for making this video - you did what years and years of their ads couldn't do and excite me enough to want to book a trip on this train! Well well done on this video!!
Wasn’t it excellent!!
It would be really cool, and I totally would do it, if it didn't also require an expensive 13 hour flight.
i didnt even know canada had a luxury train
We did this iconic train trip with my sister and brother in law ten years ago for our 40th wedding anniversary! They gifted us with an unforgettable experience! The service and especially the meals and snacks were top notch! They served us on the day of our anniversary the most delicious wine I have ever tasted! Your vlog brought back so many wonderful memories of that special time in our lives! Thank you!
That is awesome!
Your dad was lovely. Waving to people and saying hello to everyone. What a great guy.
We need more of this sort of thing in the world.
in Europe many travel by train and life is not a rush, and our air is cleaner

I was smiling non-stop with a lump in my throat throughout the video. You and your dad’s positive outlook and friendliness is something to admire. This is now on my bucket list!
I would love to do this trip again
Your dad is awesome! You could tell he truly enjoyed the trip with you. What a great memory for you both. 🥰
God bless!
So sorry.
I had such a huge smile on my face while you guys were "racing" the freight train. I love those unexpected moments of random fun when travelling.
That was the best gift which you had given to your father on his birthday. God bless you for taking care of your father at this age.
I like this guy. Taking his dad to a nice train ride. I love those kids who really care about their dad. Good job. Two thumbs up
For those who aren't local, there was massive flooding near Vancouver which washed out tracks on all rail lines. I believe they were scheduled to re-open today.
I was just wondering about that.
I was just about to ask. Thank you for the comment.

I love that you did this with your dad! You’re a great son and the trip looked really nice.
The fact that they tie meals in with surroundings is actually so incredible. That’s super cool and that in itself makes me really want to experience this.
They usually do this on flights too but it's less noticeable
Your dad sharing his story about his first train ride was so sweet! I loved everything about this video.
I love the energy of this channel. It’s borderline chaotic but calming somehow 😂
I love this comment! 😂😄👍🏼
This is a great way of saying "Entertaining", love it
The way your surprised gift is for dad I really appreciate and your energy and speech is too good such a nice gift for your dad.
Did gold class. Jasper, Banff were highlights. So want to go again.
It's TRUE more than journey. You made your dad happy. Very few take care of them. Your dad is very lucky to have son like you.
Riding the RM is a bucket list item for me. Love that train.

Well done
This is so sweet! My dad loved trains..and he would've been 75 this month like your dad! I wish I could've taken a train trip with him before he passed away. Good for you taking your dad on this trip!
You can tell you're both genuinely having the time of your lives. Thanks for bringing us along!
Your experiences with your dad constantly bring back memories with my dad who is no more. Thank you so much Downie. Much appreciated!
Sorry to hear that, but thanks for sharing, Marianne!
Did this trip in 2015 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have to agree, when travelling by train, the scenery and the train are what it’s all about
I was so moved (to tears) seeing you spend such wonderful experiences with your father. I would love to have this experience with my son's. God bless you!
Spending time with your dad is precious. You never get that time back.
What a wonderful birthday gift from a good son. And dad has the exact right spirit to *enjoy* the whole experience.
The train race was exhilarating! In fact this whole trip is. Interesting to see a modern luxury train when many are done up in a past era. Day trip only with hotels at night is a brilliant idea.
On the train race that was CN pulling a unit set going back to a G3 grain terminal in the prairies.
The Train started the fire in Lynton
A wheel on a car was stuck and fire was shooting from it as the Train went though the town
Yeah it was a dry summer and that didn't help But to blame (Climet Change) for something the Train did is dumb

It's so Heartwarming that you and your Dad had this time and experience together, wonderful memories to cherish and to have on video!
I love the relationship you have with your Dad. I can see where you got your friendly outgoing personality from. Very enjoyable to see!!
Yes, I basically learned to walk on a train!
That was absolutely a beautiful train trip. Your dad is blessed to have you as his son.
Even when you are not talking to your dad, I can see the happiness and love in your eyes and smile....he is a lucky man to have a son that enjoys his company as well as being so proud to be with him 😊

I’m definitely taking my dad on this when he turns 75. Such a good and fun idea
You dont have to wait till he's 75 !!!!.............................Erik
Don't wait that long. He'll enjoy it more if you do it sooner. You don't know what kind of health he'll be in when he's 75.
Man it makes me happy to see someone just hanging out with there dad and having a great time
Did this trip in Gold Leaf a few years ago in the older cars.
Love how Rocky Mountaineer treats the guests. I wish airlines treated passengers like that. Just wow. Loved the video and now I subscribed
It's Christmas time now and this is giving me all the Polar Express vibes. I love it 😭
