This video delves into refinishing tile flooring in an unconventional way. Why demo out the old tile and spend a considerable amount more on new tile when you can just paint over the existing. This comment made my day :) This was the very first BYOT video and every time I watch this video I cringe but so worth keeping it up because its important to see where you started so you know how much you've truly progressed. Today the BYOT TH-cam channel hit 100,000,000 views and it all started with this video. Crazy to think about how far this channel has come since 2016. Thanks so much for the support and so glad you left this comment.

    Your floor is a slate (stone) and you should strip off the poly coating that usually is found on Slate.This is stone not asbestos. Because this kind of coating can be easily scratched and slate is soft it will easily scratch regardless of the coating you have applied.

      Thanks Donald. The paint I used is very durable and I haven't noticed any scratching and this was applied by my front door so there is heavy traffic. It does get dirty though which you can clean with some light scrubbing. No harsh chemicals though because that could take the paint off.

    Looks good but there could be added steps but This is just my opinion/s so bare with me.
    1. Add lighter grey to highlight the tiles so you get a two tone effect with just the tiles.
    2. Covering the grout with tape or painting the grout a diff color maybe

    If you buff the floor, can the paint be removed and returned to relatively to what the tile looked like originally? Or once it's done there's no going back? We have hideous flooring in our townhouse, and we are allowed to do anything as long as if the owner doesn't like upon moving out she can have it returned to how it was prior...

    • @BYOTools
      @BYOTools  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once the paint is on its ON for good. I would say ask the owner of you can paint it and see what they say. If the tile is that ugly them the paint is for sure an improvement and less work for the owner since they don't have to rip it out.

    You have given me hope. Our house has three different tile styles and colors: a)terra cotta pinks and rusts set in harlequin pattern, b)modern ceramic white, and c)ceramic, grey, that looks like wood slats. Makes me cringe. Can't afford to tear it out and start over and hate wall to wall carpet. If I can paint everything grey to 'match' the wood looking tiles, maybe I can live with it. Thanks for the idea. • @BYOTools

      Hi Laura. The paint I used was for exterior patio use so if it can handle that then it should be able to handle an interior bathroom without needing a sealer. Try it out without a sealer and if you do need a sealer after a while then you can paint the floor again with another coat and then apply a sealer.

      Any coating over a ceramic or porcelain will not last and look ghetto, The bond is just not a good one, easily scratched and will peel off. Tile is so affordable now days. just jack it out and install what you really want. There's so much variety as well from porcelain wood look planks to any texture and color you could dream up.

    Please do not paint over slate floors. Slate floors at entrances were THE thing in the '50's, 60's and '70;'s. Why would you take that vintage bit out of the house by turning a slate foyer into a mechanics garage floor that screams "rip me up and start over"? It is horrifying. You CLEAN slate and refinish it - high gloss or natural. You don't paint it! Spare me. What's next? Chalk painting the marble mantels?

    Just repainted a tile floor in the entryway and the bathroom because it had chipped from about 6 months ago and this time we applied a sealer. Some spots look great and some spots look like they have a white film now. I’m thinking the sealer was to heavy in those spots. Any ideas on how to fix it? and if a photo would help show you what it looks like let me know.

    Great idea, we have an old bathroom in the house that needs a quick facelift. Question? in addition to the floor, how would it hold up on ceramic tile in the bathtub/shower stall? is it waterproof and how do you keep it clean? thanks

  • @NTRaciaLuv

    for a project like this, if I still want to see the grout lines after I paint over my tiles do I chip off the existing grout and re-grout the whole thing? thanks for making this video, I find this and a few others that I watched very helpful and informative!

      You could do that or you could paint everything and then go back and paint just the grout lines. I would suggest re-grouting though.

    This is one of the best first videos I've ever seen, great job. I also think this tile painting is a great job, I appreciate you showed step by step and explained why. Is there a similar method for concrete? I'm pretty sure it's concrete under the wall-to-wall carpet I want to pull out of my house. Many thanks!

    • @BYOTools
      @BYOTools  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great to hear and yes you can definitely apply a coating to a concrete subfloor but you need to make sure to get a moisture reader and check to make sure you don't have too much moisture in the slab. I also would use a paint that is more durable. Maybe a two part epoxy mixture that you can add coloring to. I might have to do a video on that one coming up :) Thanks for watching.

    • @mssixty3426
      @mssixty3426 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BYOTools Many thanks for your reply. It's hard to imagine there's much moisture left in my slab foundation house built in 1960 in the desert Southwest U.S. 😄 but that sounds like a wise thing to do. I'd hate to do all that work to have it peel off or discolor. I've seen some beautiful outdoor colored and artistic concrete work on patios, but I don't know if it was done when the concrete was poured, or if it was done later.
      I look forward to more videos from you. Cheers!

    I continue to be amazed on how many people use a BRUSH for the entire job...instead of a ROLLER (with a brush to cut). Not only will you get the job completed quicker...but it will give you a better final finish!!

    • @BYOTools
      @BYOTools  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good suggestion D and I use plenty of rollers but the paint brush actually worked much better on this tile then a roller. Don’t really know why and I don’t paint tile very often but that was the case on this project. Also, not going to save much time on a project of this size with a roller but I get your point. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed most of the video.

    what about if the tile is already NON gloss -ROUGH surface?i have tiles where iam renting that are in terrible condition,teh surface is not smooth,full of small little holes,plus it always spits off dust..when i mop...its so rough that even my mop sort of get worn out!
    do i still sand down?can you not use the roller to paint the paint on?rather than brush? how do u clean it?by the video was gr8!

    • @BYOTools
      @BYOTools  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked the video. I would say that even if the tile is rough you still want to sand it slightly since you still want to get some of the grim and dirt off of the tile if it's old. No you don't have to worry about using a roller. A brush is just fine if you use the same paint I did because is self leveling. Also if you paint the tile those small hole should fill up with paint. Just might take a little longer to dry. Hope this helps :)

    Loved the video, but I did notice after sanding you ONLY vacuumed the tiles. If ANY dust particles are left over from sanding, it could actually cause the paint to chip off in the future. After sanding and vacuuming I would HIGHLY recommend wiping the tiles down with a slightly damp rag, in order to pick up the rest of the dust particles. I hope this helps others who plan on doing this as well. I wasn't sure what paint to use for my diy project, but you totally helped me out. Thank you!
