How to Convert 2D to 3D Logo in Photoshop

- Learn how to convert 2D to 3D images in Photoshop. You can change your flat image into a 3D logo or icon. This photo effect also lets you change the colors and angles of the text and logo.
I used Photoshop CC for this tutorial. If you do not see the option "New 3D Extrusion from Selected Layer", then make sure you follow the steps in the beginning for the video. "Use Graphics Processor" should be turned on under Edit-Preferences-Performance. Also make sure you updated your Photoshop CC to the latest version.
If you are still having issues, then it's possible that your video card does not meet the minimum requirements to run 3D mode.
3D render time depends on your computer specs. It may take from 5 -20 minutes or even more depending on the quality you want.

Yes, in the 3D settings it allows you to choose different materials, reflections, etc. You can also add any photo or texture over the logo at the end. Place any texture photo above the logo, then right click on the texture photo layer, select Create Clipping Mask.

damn, been using Ps for 7 years and i used to create 3D stuff from scratch lmao. Time to learn about the 3D feature. Can you do complex 3D stuff too? Such as an Assault Rifle? Can you make the edges round? Let me know. Thanks

I believe if you go to Export tab in Photoshop, you will see this option.
Great tutorial! Just one question, what if logo has two levels of 3d? Imagine a logo with square background with number on it, I want to make that square background 3d but that number inside must be on top of that background and not flat on background.
That is an interesting idea. I am going to see if I can do that.

Yes, you can use CMYK. You can go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. Then select Colorize and make color adjustments there. If your original logo has more than one color or complex colors, then it may be a harder.
Can you you 3D render anything using this method? like not just logo but a car image or character?
I think it can add 3d to the general outline shape of the car or character, but not super detailed depth.

There are some bugs with the 3d mode and it seems to be changing colors for some people. I will try to fix it in another video tutorial.

When i create shape, it doesn't create a new layer.. keeps everything on the same layer as the background.. why?
If you want the shape to be on another layer, click the New Layer icon on the bottom right of the layer panel.
Once I create my 3D object, with the move and rotate tool selected, I am unable to orbit my 3D object, any reasons as to why? All help is appreciated.

looks like my laptop is not compatible for this. I tried following the steps in Preference > performance but it doesn't give me an option to checkmark graphics processor. will try this again once i have a better laptop..
Yeah, using the 3d mode uses a lot of workload on the computer.

Ok so the "New 3D Extrusion from Selected Layer" is found under the 3d tab at the top now.Adobe is phasing out the 3D options

They changed something in the update that seems to give it limited options.
I did logo already but i applied colour aslso I just want to add 3d effect but it's colour coming when I am try to this first when I am merging layer

I don't think photoshop is making updates to that feature so it may be buggy.
Iny Photoshop after right click I have no new extrude 3d option

Hey. Select the Background layer. Then click the "Lock" icon. Then try select Postcard.

Nope. It can be any size. If you use a larger size, it will take longer to render when using 3D mode.
what if i do not want the background? do I just render the 3d thing while hiding my background?
I am not too sure because the 3D mode is currently buggy.

Select the top layer. Then in the layer panel, bottom right, add a "Solid Color" adjustment layer Then input fc7c00. Change layer blending mode from "Normal" to "Color". Then right click on the Sold Color Fill layer in layer panel, then select "Create Clipping Mask". Let me know your progress.

Not a problem. You can try placing a transparent layer below the Background layer (Duplicate the Background layer, add a New layer between it, then hide or delete the bottom Background layer). Then you can use the Background Eraser Tool or Magic Eraser Tool to remove the background color. There also might be a way to make the background transparent when rendering the 3d shape more in the beginning, but I haven't checked that out yet.

Crazy some of the problems yall are having. My issue is that when I render my icon it displays the same icon inside it or on that layer like in the middle of my icon. Like if my icon was a face i am seeing two faces on inside each other. do you know the solution to this problem????

If you have a selection, you can go to Select > Modify > Smooth.
when I try to change the colour, it moves off the screen and distorts my work

It came with my Photoshop. I have the newest Photoshop CC version but I had that shape before that so I am not sure. You can always download custom shapes.

Yes that is correct. Creative Cloud has all different programs by Adobe and you will find Photoshop in it.
How do I export to an obj in a mapped state?

If you do not see "Merge Layers" at 2:35 , then select "Rasterize Layers" instead. Then right click on the 2 layers again, then select "Merge Layers".
